Mary gave me the best Brazilian Blowout. I have been getting them for about 5 years and the last time I went to a different salon I walked out and my hair was already frizzy. Mary is very experienced (12 years doing Brazilian Blowouts), very knowledgable about hair, and wonderful to talk to. I have been using Groupons for blowouts to figure out who to go to regularly and I finally found someone I know I can trust with my hair! 10/10 recommend This salon is so cute too! They were in the process of downsizing when I went in, so everything was kinda all over the place and a little messy. However, even though it wasn't in all of it's glory, I still really enjoyed the vibe. The decor is 70's and the music matches -- so, I started to fall in love as soon as I walked in. I have been searching for a hair stylist since mine left a year ago. Last time I went to some lady that messed up my hair so I was determine to find the BEST one to cut my hair! After yelping around I found Chris and Matt from Orange. I called in to ask for either of them for today and Chris had an opening so I took that appointment. I came in, he looked at my hair and told me what I should do to it. I'm not that picky about my hair style, I just need it to look good and easy to maintain. and I dont want to use a lot of hair products in my hair or have it take forever to be done in the morning. I have tons of thick hair that has natural volume so I can't do a lot of the styles that I want...He paid attention to my hair and thats what I want out of my stylist! his price was reasonable for me. This just goes to show ya, you gotta try something before you make any assumptions. After reading some pretty beat reviews about this place I was really nervous about my appointment. Seeing as I bought a Groupon for the Brazilian Blowout, I didn't want to be treated any differently than if I hadn't bought it. Gah! For starters yes, the booking process is annoying. When I called to make my initial appointment I was irritated that someone had to take my # and call me back!? WTF? But I'm calling now? But the woman who called back was very nice and accommodating. I even had to reschedule once and they were totally cool. Sooo....I show up for my appointment and immediately I love the place. Totally rustic but sheik. After I checked in, Renee came walking around as cute as could be and took me back. After chit chatting for a few minutes "Have you ever had a Brazilian Blowout?" "You know how to make it last longer"...yada yada yada. We get started. I have to say that after having 4 of these done, this one was by far the BEST. Renee took her time, used two different flat irons (a baby one and a regular one, so she could get the lil whispies and my roots real good). She divided my hair into prolly 100 different sections. I was there over 2 hours (when usually I was walking out around the 1.5 hr mark). She even gave me a little bit of the masque to take home and use the first time I wash my hair. Lovely. True Story: When I realized that I hadn't put enough change in the meter outside...Renee not only used her own change but fed the meter for me!!! Heart. It's been 4 days and my hair is absolutely, unbelievably amazeballs!!! I've been at the pool (not swimming), sweating and being an overall crazy lady and my hair not only doesn't have one fly away, but ZERO kinks and it is just as straight now as it was 4 days ago. However, there comes a point when my golden tresses needed some trimming, and maybe some kind of deep conditioning treatment. A pirate must look her best. Since I do not get regular haircuts, I decided to try Orange after seeing Amy E.'s review a while back and the subsequent Yelp-hype. So does this salon make the cut? Pa-rum-pa-pum-pum. Hair stylist Mary Leyva cut my hair, and I am completely happy with the results. I took Mary some pictures of the type of cut I wanted and asked her opinion about the hairstyle. Mary really knows her stuff. After discussing the haircut, she cut it exactly the way we discussed, and she gave me some tips on how to style it as well. Mary being a proper Dallas gal - not from the suburbs, but real Dallas, was an added bonus, 'cause I love me some local girls. Mary's cuts cost $60.00, which pains a penny-pincher like myself, but I am so happy with the haircut and the stylist that I handed over my $60.00 + tip without flinching. I would like to note that when I called and booked the appointment, I was told that a cut from Mary would run $60. I called around to other salons (Regis and Toni and Guy) and their prices were similar. Haircuts for woman just cost a lot, that is just another social injustice we woman have to suffer. After reading all the wonderful reviews on Yelp, I decided this place sounds too awesome to not try it out. I'm so glad I did. This place IS awesome. I am usually a spur of the moment haircut kind of girl. I usually just decide one day to get my hair cut and drive around looking for the first place with an opening. It is only by sheer luck that I have never been severely damaged. This time, I decided that I was going to go to a REAL salon and spend more than $20 to get something different and professional. I sent an e-mail to request an appointment and let them know that what I really wanted was someone I can trust enough to say that I don't know what I want, but I want something different and awesome. Make it happen! They called and scheduled me with Monica. She was incredibly personable. She asks questions and gets to know you, but not in that phony annoying way that some stylists have. She suggested a cut that I wouldn't have thought of on my own, but that wasn't so out there that I would look like an experiment. I have gotten more compliments than I ever have on my hair. I don't give 5-star reviews lightly. Nor am I very lenient with those who cut and color my hair. No sir. I am not one of those fun waifs who can go traipsing into a salon (pick one, any one!), skip up to the nearest stylist and proclaim, "I need a new look. Run with it, baby!" The last time I did anything near to that, I received a haircut that would make Edward Scissorhands "creations" look like Betty Crocker. In light of that rigidity with all things coiffu-centric, here's why (and i have a LOT of experience switching salons) I have been going to Orange for over 3 years and why I will ALWAYS be loyal to Orange: Matthew - Cutter of hair, charismatic gabber of all things Britney and Lohan - he is a god among men. And he only charges $50 for a woman's haircut, which is below the industry standard in Dallas. Keep in mind that I have very, very thick, slightly wavy hair and it has been a Siddhartha-style journey to find enlightenment (and a good trim) at the hands of multifarious stylists over the years. Andrea - She wasn't voted by D Magazine as one of the best colorists for nothing. She is, in short, AMAZING. My hair is a strange permutation of red, blonde and brownish auburn, and to perfect this blend of color exactly how I like it is to achieve a feat as daunting as scaling Everest, navigating the Serengheti on a tricycle, or possibly telling a three-year-old there are no more Goldfish snacks left. And with all that talent, she is also priced very reasonably. I have paid anywhere (depending on whether I want a full highlight or simply a touch-up) from $70-110. Other things of greatness here: -Orange kitsch EVERYTHING. I feel like I'm in a giant bottle of Orangina when I come here. Or possibly an Andy Warhol painting. -Funny, intelligent, hipster stylists who obviously love their clients and love doing hair. -No ridiculous lead times for appointments. The furthest out I've ever had to schedule my appointment because of Matthew or Andrea's schedules was 1 week. Ever. Sometimes the service, prices and environment are so good, it troubles me. Did I miss something? Did I inadvertently sign away my first child? Are they borgs? Am I hallucinating? Every time, the same answer - the most novel idea, but also the simplest one: a stupendous salon. If you think I'm exaggerating, go see for yourself. Just don't tell anyone. I wouldn't want the word to get out. PS - I now live in Austin and I still consider them my stylists. I don't care if I move to Alaska - freight plane me in with some cargo. If you can see from my yelp profile, I don't really write a lot of reviews. I work in the salon/beauty industry myself, as a manager to boot. So I know what it feels like to have a simple misunderstanding end up costing you a bad review/a client that may never return when the situation could have been fixed. BUT I had to take a few mins to review Orange Salon. A few weeks ago, I was in desperate need for a cut and color. I wanted to support a small business, and this salon was close to my house, chic, and the prices seemed reasonable. I ended up not absolutely loving the results, even though the person I saw was SO sweet, and made my hair feel very healthy, after getting home to try and style it myself, it still just wasn't quite what I was looking for. I reached out to the owner, and even amongst the protests in Deep Ellum and all the other craziness going on in the world, she was SO understanding and she really seemed invested in making everyone who came into the salon happy. They brought me back in and NAILED my cut and color. GO TO THIS SALON! No matter who you see, I assure you they care and want you to be happy. After moving here from Atlanta, I'm happy to have found a small business to support and I know will really listen and give me the results I'm looking for when it comes to the funky styles I always want. The thing I hate most about moving is having to find a new salon AND a new hair guy/girl. Its a combo package and one isn't good enough alone. Okay, wait wait wait...back up. Actually what I hate most about moving is the packing, unpacking and of course the hard prison labor of the actual move. That said, once the move is complete... finding a new groovy land where cool shiny tresses are created.. is the next most painful endeavor. I had the same hair guy for 11 years before my first move and for two years I went through separation anxiety and consequent therapy. JK. Thank goodness I found Orange. AND Corey. The place is kitschy retro cool and Corey is awesome. After only my very first cut I felt as though I'd known him for years.. and I loved my hair. He is very fair and after one unsuccessful attempt at relaxing my daughter's Janis Joplin-like hair...i called him up and he offered attempt #2 for free. Cuz he's awesome like that. And I LOVE my color.. i told him he could do whatever he wanted with my hair as long as I didn't come out looking like like a soccer mom or a UK punker. First off, very few places on Yelp have a solid 5 star rating and the fact that over a dozen people have reviewed Orange and agreed says great things about this place...moreover, getting your hair cut is a big deal and a bad cut is something you have to live with for weeks/months until it grows back. Thus, if people weren't happy with their cuts you'd better believe there would be some critical reviews. With that being said, even though I've been in Dallas for almost a year I've been too scared to get my hair cut down here and have just held out for whenever I've been home to get it done. That wasn't going to work anymore, so I decided to give this place a try. After one visit I've already decided this is my new salon (Goodbye Maria, it was good while it lasted). The staff here are great and everyone there was really social/chatty with all the customers. I didn't know who to schedule an apt. with so they put me with Wolf. Matt is wonderful! I've been getting my hair cut by Matt for almost a year now and I always feel like a million bucks when I walk out the door. Two of my friends also go to Matt and always look gorgeous when he is finished with them! The salon has a very friendly, laid-back vibe. Someone always greets me when I walk in and offers a cold beverage while I wait. I haven't had color done there but definitely would trust my hair to these people if I ever decided to. I was one of the "cheap clients" (per Sara F.'s review of the stylists gossiping & complaining about groupon buyers) who purchased a Brazilian Blowout groupon. It's disapointing to know that they are treating potential future clients this way as had I been able to use my groupon & actually get a Brazilian Blowout with a good experience, I would have been a returning client who spends a significant amount of money on my hair on a regular basis. And I believe in taking care of your stylists with a great tip! I had hoped to be able to get in to see Linda, since I heard from other sylists that she was the best in Dallas for a BB & trained most other stylists at the salon I go to. I called the week the groupon activated (Oct 2010) and spoke to Linda, who told me they were taking names & #'s down & would call me next week... I got no phone call. Just moved from LA to Dallas, and had to find a good salon....looked at all the reviews on Yelp, and decided to go with Orange. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in and took a seat in an original Herman Miller armshell chair, and glanced over to the cutting stations- only to find George Nelson bubble lamps! Definitely NOT 50's "kitsch" as previously stated by a reviewer! Very cool environment. Monica did my cut, and I am VERY happy with the work she did. She took the time to really examine my hair, and talk about the right style for me. She was not an "in and out" stylist, instead she listened to what I wanted, and how I like my hair cut, and did an awesome job. Great salon, awesome hair cut- I'll definitely be back. read more

Nestled away in Deep Ellum, you would assume that this fashion-forward place would produce excellent hair stylists. Well, you're wrong. I came here in November to get my hair dyed. I was a reddish blond, and wanted my black hair back. A good colorist knows the difference between natural black and jet black, unfortunately the woman who serviced me did not and just slapped color on my head without asking any questions. I asked her not too dark black, but that is exactly what she gave me. The color already started to wash out in 2 days, even with color-saving shampoo. Now, I've dyed my hair a lot and know a crappy dye job when I see one. Dye does not start to wash out in 2 days alone, not even black. She wasn't a very experienced colorist. I can dye my own hair at home to black better than she could. She didn't even section my hair- just slapped on color. I personally hated my experience here. Even though they tried their best to satisfy me, the colorist who dyed my hair did way too much damage to be corrected. I will never visit this business again, and I felt really gypped once I left. You guys should really contact Tabitha and see if she'll come do an episode on your salon. Even though you think you're a great salon, lots of people on Yelp have been dissatisfied and contacting them and asking them to change their review in exchange for free services is pretty low to do. read more

Like Kathryn E - I too was out of a stylist after my move to Dallas - I was able to fit in hair appointments at home when I visited sometimes, but the last few months it didn't happen and my hair was showing it! I was leery of getting a new stylist - as most girls are - but when I saw the reviews for Orange I was excited to try them out. I booked Andrea for my color and she was AWESOME!! I told her what I was looking for and she made it happen. I booked Todd for my cut and he was also awesome! I was contemplating bangs and he suggested we "ease" into such a drastic change by just doing some face framing today and then see how I feel next time. It's perfect. It's different without being like CRAZY different (I have engagement pics next week and didn't want to have any thing drastic changed before them). The decor of Orange is SO cute! I have been going to Orange salon for over 5 years, and have consistently received professional and friendly service from Clarissa Baeza and Matthew Taylor. I have dark, naturally curly hair and Clarissa is able to provide the most natural looking highlights for dark hair. I always get compliments from family, friends, and strangers. After my color is done, Matthew is able to blow out my natural curls into a sleek, shiny, beautiful head of hair, I go from kinky curly to sumptuous straight without a flat-iron! I had my hair dyed here and the service was absolute TRASH. The dye that was placed on my head began to burn my scalp and i kept insisting for help. The owner response was "deal with it or wash it off" as i frantically looked for something to wipe it off. It was as if she didn't care that i was in pain, she was so nonchalant about it. She did not care what was happening to me and NO one helped me. The owner stayed put on her phone the entire time. No humanity in her person and she treats her staff like animals. If she can't be nice to her staff what makes one think she cares about her costumers. At the end i rinsed it out myself and walked out the salon WITH wet hair, no blow dry no towels. I just moved from LA, where I came from the best salon one could ask for, Hairroin. I came here based on Yelp reviews and because it seemed to have a similar feel to my last salon, with in-house training being a key selling point. I had Linda, and the quality of haircut I received was worse than a Supercuts. This review would have been one star, had she not had the sense to enlist the help of another stylist to finish my cut. It was not enough to save it, and I feel cheated. I may return and see one of the other stylists that you guys have recommended, but if they hired someone like that then how can I trust their judgement? Best hair salon I've ever visited. I was weary of spending more than $30 to have someone cut my hair until I came here and met Ashley P. Now there's no one else I trust with my golden locks. Seriously, I lost sleep this week at the thought of having another person trim my troubled mane. Orange is a well-run, friendly, and pleasant place to spend an hour or however long it takes to have your do done. Each time I walk in, I'm greeted by most of the employees and am offered water or soda. I've only dealt with Ashley, but she has, time and again, given me the highest quality cuts I've had. My wife also sees Ashley, who seems to be the only hair cutter/stylist who has deciphered the enigma that is the large bump on my skull (bike wreck, not extra brain as I'd initially thought) and the curly complexity that is my wife's flowing mop. We both are happy to pay the premium and keep coming back as we feel very much at home at Orange. Also, if you're in the market for some boutique hair products, these guys carry all sorts of nice stuff to keep your hair on high. Again, if in doubt, ask for Ashley P. Since I live in Deep Ellum and it's right next door to All Good Cafe...I walk by Orange a lot. The bright orange decor and friendly looking staff caught my eye. So I finally booked an appointment and I'm really glad I did. Orange is my new fav salon! After checking out their staff bios on their website, I decided that Ashley P. would be a great fit to take my fake blonde hair to a semi-natural brunette - not something just any colorist can handle. I must admit I was nervous to do color correction at a brand new salon, but everything turned out beautiful and she even had me come back for a free tone a few weeks later to make sure it was 100% what I wanted. I love my new color and don't miss the blonde at all! That chick knows what she's doing! All of the girls here are super sweet...no diva action going on, and the atmosphere is like you're hanging at your friends house. While some other salons try and rush you in and out, Orange takes the time to make sure you're happy. Plus, they don't make you blow dry your own hair - in fact, they don't make you work at all. ;) Something to note - if you're paying by credit card, just be aware they use those Square adapters on their iPhones....so make sure you have a check handy just in case they aren't working. read more

I bought a Groupon for a Brazillian Blowout and never even got to redeem it. I called 5-6 times and left 3-4 voicemails just to schedule an appointment. When I arrived at my appointment, I waited 30min in the salon before someone told me that I would have to reschedule b/c my stylist called in sick. They also offered me water and then 5 min later told me they were out of water. I wasted time (1 hour of travel, 30 min salon wait time) and money (parking and gas) on this experience and got nothing out of it. When I asked for a refund, they tried to reschedule me with a different stylist at a later time.But that would mean a bigger waste of time and gas money. I didn't reschedule. Don't waste your money. I just didn't feel right about leaving Renee behind to go and follow Monica. I went to Matthew, one of the owners and then returned to Renee for color. I am thrilled with what Matthew did with my hair. I especially like the time he spends to make it "just right"! As always, Renee is fabulous! They've down-sized the salon instead of adding more stylists. I think it is a great move, and I'm perfectly happy to keep returning to Matthew and Renee!! read more

Matt was very nice and personable. He did not do what I really wanted, though--actually, he talked me out of the pictures I'd brought in. Had I been to him before and gained that trust, I probably wouldn't have cared as much. But, the cut was cute enough, but for the price and Yelp reviews, I really thought it would be so much better. I got my hair cut here after hearing it was such a great place but alas...I am still on the look out for the perfect cut and stylist. A woman was walking out with a haircut SIMILAR but not EXACTLY what I wanted, the stylist gave me a similar cut that made me feel a bit cookie cutterish :( I'm really bad at confronting stylists because I feel vulnerable having my hair cut...plus once it's cut it's cut, so I tried to have a good time and reminded myself I can always get it re-cut in a month or two. I purchased a livingsocial voucher in april for a brazilian blowout for $119. it was impossible to get an appointment with tiffany in july. i called and texted tiffany a month ahead to get an appointment in september, and she never bothered to return my call. i then called the salon a week later, where they told me it was impossible to get an appointment with tiffany on the multiple days i was suggesting, even calling a month ahead. i pleaded with them, and they assigned me an appointment with mary. when i walked in, i was greeted by the front desk staff (actually located at back of store). that was fine, i was handed over a coke and a gown to wear, and the secretary took me back to wash my hair. she did not comment at all about what shampoo she was using. i then went and mary came in, and asked me if i knew what a brazilian blowout was. i told her i've never had one, but only have read about it. she told me that it's not a straightener, and is only a frizz-fighter. then, one of her first comments about my hair was that it was "massive." i have long (down to my elbows), thick, wavy hair. the whole brazilian blowout took about 45 minutes! i found this very surprising, since it normally takes an hour for me to just get a haircut, since my hair is so thick and long. to give an idea, a guy was getting his haircut next to me and we finished at the same time! the haircut part took about 10-15 minutes. mary refused to refer to the haircut as that though, she only asked how i wanted to "touch up" or "trim" my hair, even though the voucher clearly states a HAIRCUT. that was annoying. i was NOT given the BLOWOUT part of the brazilian- my hair was only generally blowdried to get out the wetness, and then it was CARELESSLY flat-ironed. when i got home, there was still wavy hair on the underside of my head! during the process, instead of explaining to me about the brazilian blowout, mary and her co-worker were ordering lunch (deciding and reading over my head amongst 7 different types of specialty pizzas), and mary was continuously complimenting another client's hair across from me. when i got up, i had flyaways sticking straight up on my head. she then said, "i'll put hairspray on it", and she proceeded to spray hair spray on my hair while i was standing up. i really wanted to buy the brazilian blowout products to use on my hair. i assumed mary would show me the options when checking out. when i was checking out, i gave her the voucher and tip, and all she said was "thank you" without making eye contact. she did not bother explaining the after-care of the brazilian, thank you, any other words, or even a good-bye. i quickly walked out the door, since clearly mary was not interested in acting professional or showing any interest in my brazilian blowout! overall, obviously i'd never go back to this salon. what makes me the most angry is the fact that i was not even given a proper brazilian blowout- my hair was only washed once when i walked in, i was NOT even given an actual blowout, and my hair was CARELESSLY flat-ironed, with waves left in!! i was basically treated as if i was coming in for a free service. they could care less about me or the procedure being done on me. if you want to go to a salon where no one cares about you or your hair, be given half of an actual brazilian blowout, and where it's impossible to get an appointment, then go here. otherwise, there are TONS of other superior salons in this area. read more

This is a sad review to write because I actually really really loved my hair. I'm just disappointed in their customer service. Problem 1: when I came to the salon, (which by the way, they are in the process of downsizing so don't let it throw you off) they didn't have my appointment. I booked it three weeks ago, and gave a follow up call two days earlier. This is upsetting to the client and stylist because they had to work me into their schedule meaning it was rushed. Problem 2: I got a groupon for a deep condition and blowout. I wanted my hair in curly waves. Shannon, my stylist, asked first whether I was a regular client or Groupon customer. After I told her I purchased the Groupon, she told me that she would charge 15 extra for the style I wanted. Why? This wasn't stated in the Groupon fine print, and a traditional blowout should include hot tools. Being in the chair with shampoo all over my hair, I grudgingly agreed to pay 15 extra of the 20 already spent. I asked her later why she was charging 15, and she said it's because she makes no money off the Groupon at all, and that was the only way. She proceeded to say "I would hope Groupon customers know we don't get paid whenever the gratuity comes around". Not only did she make me feel ashamed for buying a Groupon, but I was so incredibly upset that I had to pay extra for NO reason. Companies advertising on Groupon should understand that they are doing it more for advertising purposes, or at the LEAST include that there may be an extra charge in the fine print. I was disgusted that she also assumed Groupon customers will not tip. The sad thing is, this is exactly why I won't return. Although my hair was perfect, I cannot justify the lack in customer service. Shannon is a nice person with a lot of personality and a great stylist.
