I've only gone once, but I'll never go again. I went with a group of 7 graduate students from Cranbrook Academy of Art and once we got to the door 1 of the bouncers made a comment about 1 of the guys drop-crotch pants, then his fresh, black, timberlands. After the bouncer insulted our friend for a minute he decided that our friend wasn't fit for Orchids "fine" establishment. After, the bouncer made a point to apologize about the discriminatory nature of his job and that he was just an enforcer I made a point to say "no, we apologize for our brownness" he perked up and said "no, no, no, that's not what this is" as our group walked away. The rest of our group showed up 30 minutes later, 4 more graduate students. All white, and all dressed practically for studio work more or less. After seeing what they were wearing (3 of which were wearing something deemed inappropriate by Orchids standers) I asked them to go through the door as an experiment. All 4 got in without hesitation. One of the guys was wearing the same "work boots" black, older, dirty, off brand timberlands, as our black friend was. It was outrageous. This is 2016 and were still dealing with racial profiling and discrimination in Metro Detroit especially in a so called "inclusive city" such as Ferndale. We have already let the rest of the graduate program know that Orchid is terrible, has mediocre music, racist door men, and prejudice management. If you don't want to support an establishment that represents these things, do not go to Orchid. read more

Strangely enough I found this place while I was drinking coffee and meeting a study group at Java Hutt. Big groups of people kept walking by the window and not looping back around, so before going back to our cars we looked to see where people were gathering. I had actually heard about Orchid but I didn't realize it was right downtown... for some reason I thought it was further south than 9 mile. Anyways, we couldn't help but pop in to check it out and say hello. It was a Friday night and after class AND studying it was nice to have a drink and dance. Going to a nightclub with people from school you don't know very well is a very interesting experience. It was a lot more fun than I could have planned for... for the most part. Note: Parking must get difficult later in the evening because people pretty much slow rolled behind us trying to get our spot which was ackward. The streets went to empty to packed within an hour. I'd recommend either getting in a little early, driving with friends or getting dropped off. read more

My black friend was told by the manager of Orchid club in Ferndale that she couldn't sit on a stool next to me in the dj booth. She was doing NOTHING but observing, and didn't even HAVE a drink so no equipment could get spilled on. The week before we had white people in the booth...nothing was said to them. I was instructed nightly NOT to play GHETTO music because "we don't want an urban (black) crowd. White people request the same music you jerks. We just wanna dance. I played good music regardless of the race of the artist and was subsequently escorted out DURING my set by security PER THE racist manager Rikki. Show these racists how you feel with a review and don't give them your money. They are sister bars with Luna in royal oak. They also turned off their facebook reviews after NUMEROUS people OVER THE LAST YEAR told stories of how racist they are. It's not just one angry white dude. read more

So I wasn't a big fan of Orchid the first couple times I came in (like 2 years ago). We ended up at Orchid for 2 bachelorette parties then for a friends going away party. I think it was "Hip Hop Saturday" (or so it said on the tvs). There were so many people hip-hoppin' way too close to me that I couldn't really feel comfortable. We came back the first week the patio open this season and had SO much fun. The music was fun, the staff was super awesome, we had reservations so we got in for no charge for cover and we ended up staying late enough to realize that they give out free pizza at the end of the night. Who does that? I was kinda drunk and trying to order pizza to pay for which was kinda embarrassing, but they were so nice I forgot to be embarrassed haha. read more

The security guards are racist towards Indians. They let black and white ppl in but when Indian brown people come in they deny them on sight. The dress code has everything on it so they can just deny u if they feel like it. It has everything listed. My friends wore jeans with dress shoes and got denied. This is a racist place and the security guards denied people from coming in because the color of their skin. And they deny the $2 specials to brown people when they order drinks. Don't take my word. Orchid is the only place in the area of its kind! I loved the layout of the place, it is so open and has a great stage area to extend the dancing! The crowd is so unique. It seems like you can find at least one of every type of person in this place, which is one of the best things about it! The drink specials are phenomenal, and even off special the drinks are not priced too high considering it is a night club! Definitely my favorite place to spend a Friday or Saturday night! read more

So I heard about this place when I was at Luna and am glad I decided to check it out. It's definitely an interesting place. My friends and I arrived ended up arriving later than planned so we missed the $2 drinks till 11, but luckily there were still shot specials during certain songs the rest of the night. The ladies here were unpretentious and unique, the bathrooms were big and that free pizza smelled amazing (even though I somehow missed getting a piece). read more

Very selective security guards that don't allow Indian people specifically in. I was allowed in with athelitc outfit but my Indian friends who had dress pants on couldn't. The security admitted to his buddy that he doesn't like "curry people" in the club. Racist place. Unless you are white or black u are not allowed to get in. I have been here twice. I've had lots of fun each time. My friend and I got there way too early, so the crowd was pretty thin. It picked up eventually, and once people started dancing it became a very good night. Nice bartenders, always quick and dressed in cool outfits. The music is good, not repetitive. read more

The themed parties are so cute with the decorations and themed special drink menus. The 90s vs 00s parties are always a hit The staff is amazing, I love them all! Would highly recommend if you're looking to go out and have a great time and dance your booty off. Let's go!!! read more

Oh man... Fridays here are absolutely amazing. The bartenders are hilarious and adorable. I love the dance and the hip/hop pump up music.
