I think this place is great! Granted, I don't get anything too fancy, but everytime I get my nails done I walk away happy. I admit, I bite my nails. Very short. So short that most people laugh at my stubby little fingers when I walk in. I have acrylic tips put on so my fingers look normal but if they laugh, or condescend me on my short nails, I never go back. The ladies who work here have always been nice, and have never made me feel like I'm the biggest loser on the face of the earth because I bite my nails. It is, quite frankly, why I keep going back. They are reasonably priced for what you get, and are pretty much on par with other nail salons. They do have quite a few color options but the majority are bright and bold. I prefer more soft and natural, but I can get by. No complaints! read more

I am not a local. Not even from Boston or Massachusetts for that matter. But since moving to the area three years ago I have searched for a nail salon that has a large variety of gel polishes, inovation design ideas, and a pink and white gel option. I am a high paying customer, get my nails done every 3 weeks, and never leave less then a $20.00 dollar tip. So that's the backdrop. I came in on a rainy Monday as a walkin. One other eldery lady sat getting her nails done as I interacted with the owner explaining that I wanted a new set and pink and white gel. She immediately heads over to the price board and says, "Pink and white gel will be 50 dollars." and I replied with a happy, "No problem!" She sat me at her desk took one look at my nails and said, "For your length its an extra 5 dollars." Once again, "No problem! I know i like them long." She took another look, "For this shape (coffin shape) it's another 5 dollars." And again, "No problem." As an experienced nail salon customer I know that charging more for the coffin shape is far fetched, but hey if they blow my socks off I dont mind the cost at all. To cut things short, my nails are an awkward almond/round shape now. Bumpy and EXTREMELY thick acrylic. And to top it off when the polish was bubbling and noticably bumpy she picked at it and said you are good to go. I asked her to fix it, she sanded it off, and then, tried to make me go again. Embarrassment at this point because I never complain I asked, "Would you mind repolishing that one finger you just sanded?" After aurguing with me that the polish was "Still there." she put it on again and then with no massage, no lotion, no nothing she was done. Only after my usual $20.00 dollar tip did she finally smile and say, see you soon. Ha, your hilarious. I had 2 really great experiences here and one awful experience getting acrylic fills. Unfortunately my bad experience was so terrible that I may not go back. They probably won't want me after this review, but I'll give them a chance to fix this. During the great experiences, Alina did my nails and she was incredible. The shape, polish, and her customer service were all perfect. I cannot say enough good things about her. The two stars are for her only. Unfortunately the third time I went Alina was not available. The woman that did my nails hacked up my cuticles and kept burning and cutting me with the grinding tool. I twitched and pulled my hand back a few times, but she kept doing it. One of them was bleeding but they all stung badly when she sprayed them with what I assume is alcohol. I should have left then, but she had already started grinding, and I had the last appointment of the evening (i.e. nowhere else to go). She also tried to get away without shortening my nails. I don't typically have to ask for this, but she did shorten them after I asked her too. I did ask her to glue down some of the lifting I had, and she forgot to do that. I should have reminded her, but I got distracted by the painful grinding. Another annoyance was that she could not form the stiletto shape properly when I had called and specifically asked for someone who could. I asked her to do them exactly like what I had, and she did them round. I asked her to fix them and she made them somewhat better, but not what I has asked for. Lastly, because I was the last appointment of the night they rushed me out before my nails were completely dry, and now I have spots where the polish rubbed off. Service aside, this place is not very clean or updated. There are dents and scrapes on the walls and rips in all of the massage chairs. The waiting area is uncomfortable (it's like a box with a cushion on it) and the cushions are covered in polish stains and general grime. Despite the variety of polish on the cushions, their color selection isn't all that great. Really hope I don't get an infection from all of the cuts. read more

The easy listening for adults will help you sink into your chair. A regular pedicure is 25 $ and the deluxe is 35$. French is an extra 5$. A manipedi combo is 35$. Prices are reasonable, comprable to dowtown Boston places. I noticed them talking to customers ny name as they entered. The best part has to be the hot towels they wrap around your feet in the regular pedi, and the foot and calf massage....sigh a perfect treat for yourself and a little escape from your every day routine. Orchid is my go-to nail salon. Pedis last forever, and I'm hooked on their gel manis which are $25 and last over 2 weeks. The staff is friendly and outgoing, and the location is convenient. Most of the time you can get a walk in appointment, but if there's more than one in your party or it's a weekend, I'd suggest an appointment. Tips are cash only, but all services can be paid for with credit cards. Open Sundays too! read more

I love this place! I have been looking for a nail salon closer to home (Beverly) and this one is perfect. The shop is adorable and clean. The staff are friendly and attentive. They also speak very clear English so I don't have to feel bad not understanding what they're asking me or asking them to repeat over and over. I called in the morning, around 10am, to make an appointment for 2pm the same day and that was no problem. I arrived at around 1:30 and they were able to take me right away. I came in for the Delux pedicure. It lasted about 40 minutes and the girl who did it was awesome. ***before writing this review, I gave the salon a chance to fix the situation and they chose not to*** My technician was nice. Service was quick. Unfortunately, quality was very poor. About me: Visitor to the salon from out of state who religiously gets a gel mani and regular pedi every 2 1/2 weeks. Throughout the service I had to ask her to do very standard things: clean my cuticles, wipe the nail polish from my skin, remove air bubbles in the polish before putting them in the UV light. I even told her, that if she didn't take care of the edges it would peel. Well, within 2 days my nails were peeling. Gel, done right, should last at least 2 weeks. Before writing a bad review, I called and asked for a refund on JUST the gel mani. Being that I am out of state, I could not go in to request the service be redone. I said it would be an opportunity to turn around the poor job done and I was told "no, sorry." If you go here, do not go to the technician that sits directly next to the check-in stand. Orchid has become my go to for pedicures. The staff is super friendly and I've never had to wait longer than 10minutes as a walk-in. I love that they are open sundays and their deluxe pedicure is super relaxing. I don't know what other people are talking about re: the hot towels -- I've always had them used when I get a pedicure and the polish has always been well applied. I've also always been offered water and my pedicures have last up to two weeks. The only reason I had to change the polish is from nail growth. My only real complain is that sometimes moms come in here and let their children climb all over the place and scream. read more

I would love to rate this place 5 stars, I really, really would. I went on a Sunday afternoon with my future sister-in-law. We were getting our nails done for her Monday afternoon wedding, for the following day. We had appointments, but still had to wait for about 10 minutes, which was absolutely fine. The staff was friendly and the place is cute with seating in the windows. We picked our colors and waited. We were brought over to manicure tables where we sat side-by-side during our treatments. My manicurist was the owner and her daughter (Alina sp?) did my SIL's nails. Alina did an AMAZING job! She is SUCH a sweet girl and so incredibly talented. Her mother? Friendly, sure, but so obviously distracted, talking to others in the place and actually getting up from my manicure several times to deal with other customers. This ended up being a problem since we were getting gel manicures and timing is really everything with those. She literally slapped on color so haphazardly that it was THICK, clumpy, full of bubbles and looked like I let my 5 year old niece give me a manicure! Trying to be tactful and not wanting to rock the boat, I didn't say anything right away, but when half my thumb's polish peeled off onto a hand-towel after I rinsed my hands in the sink, it was time to say something. The owner was apologetic, had no idea why that happened, etc., and Alina was an angel. She whisked me off to her table after getting my SIL settled in a pedicure chair, and fixed my nails. They were immaculate. Exactly what you'd expect. We sat for a bit after my nails and SIL's pedi were done, as a flash-flooding thunderstorm hit out of nowhere and we had planned on walking back to our hotel. Alina realized our predicament and graciously offered us a ride up the street. She TRULY went above and beyond. My SIL has now gone back to see her, since she lives in Salem. Love this place! I just went here for the first time this morning. We called last night and were able to get appointments for six of us -- five for pedicures and one for a manicure. The salon is clean and inviting and doesn't smell nearly as strong as other salons I've visited. We signed in, picked out our polish colors, and were seated right away. The chairs are massage chairs you can control with a small remote. I sat next to a large fish tank. The pedicure included a calf massage and hot towel treatment. I never felt rushed. I spilled my coffee and was embarrassed and felt like a complete jerk about it but the woman doing my nails was incredibly nice and assured me it was no big deal. While the woman was doing my pedicure she asked me if I wanted an eyebrow wax. I usually don't like it when I'm offered other services because sometimes it makes me feel self-conscious but she offered so nicely I didn't mind. I'd actually been meaning to get my eyebrows done for a while and hadn't realized they offered that service. The eyebrow wax was only $10 and she did an amazing job! She was quick, gentle, and gave my eyebrows a nice shape. I have sensitive skin and usually after a wax my skin is red for the rest of the day but this time my skin didn't get red at all. I love Orchid! Normally I wouldn't step foot on Pickering's Wharf because of all the touristy hoo-ha, but after reading several extremely complimentary reviews about them, I booked mani/pedis ($35 for the combo!) for my mom and 4 sisters the day before my wedding in September. When I called to set up the appointment, I spoke to the owner, Hahn, who couldn't have possibly been any nicer. He was so thrilled I was bringing my family there for wedding nails...he congratulated me about 5 times and said "Bring champagne! Bring champagne!!!". Brother, you don't need to tell me twice! I showed up late to my own nail party with day-before-wedding-stress-tears in my eyes and I was soothed by my family, the booze, and the comforting atmosphere of Orchid salon the minute I walked in the door. Hahn was there with his wife Mini, who both hugged me and congratulated me (again!) on the impending vows. We were the only ones in the salon until about an hour into it, which was pretty nice! The girls doing the hands and feet were kind, efficient and thorough. I don't remember the specifics of the service, partly because I got myself good and drunk at 10am, but all of us were happy as clams with our nails. In the midst of innebriated story-telling, I smacked one of my not yet dry nails on a table and they graciously fixed my mess-up. Hahn chatted all of us up, asked us questions, told us stories, etc. He really was such a fantastic host, and bid us a fond farewell as we staggered out the door. I've been here a few times now. And honestly, this place is only good if you get the right person. Who I think is the owner always does a sloppy job. She doesn't do the normal manicure. No wash and lotion. And she did the gel powder awful. It broke later the same day. I only go here because it's cheap and near by. This place used to be very nice. It's gone down hill. First off it's Dirty!! We walked in and the hostess was munching down a corn on the cob and paused to ask us what we would like. I couldn't help but look around while getting my nails done; there were open chips and other food laying all around the corners of the salon. I then questioned the tools she was using and if they were even sanitized, which totally freaked me out. Also, I don't think you should have to dress up to work in a salon, but at least look presentable. I saw at least one woman in sweat pants. We are paying money to come here, you aren't at your sisters house doing her nails. Just very unprofessional. She was hasty and sloppy with my nails too. It just felt very rushed. Again, you are not doing your sisters nails at home. Upon leaving we paid and not even a thank you. For a $13 mani, we each left a $4 tip. Literally, not even a thank you. I would not go back. stumbled upon this gem when i could not remember the name of the salon i went to before a few times (Tells you how great it was). Orchid was able to fit in myself and two friends, last minute on a friday night. The staff was friendly, the price was very reasonable ($35 for a mani and pedi). And the owner came out and made sure he met all three of us and offered water. Only reason not five stars - you cannot tip with you credit card. which did result in a walk to the atm to (very carefully as to not chip) take out some cash for the lovely ladies working there. This place was fine. Fairly clean and the location is easy to walk to for anyone living near downtown Salem (warning: parking is limited). Why only 3 stars? It took me 2 hours to have a mani/pedi - and it wasn't because I had to wait a long time for an open seat. I had almost immediate service -- but my technician was so SLOW and not focused at all. He forgot to put on another layer of nail polish, so I had the first coat, second coat, top coat, - oh wait-, the forgot shimmer coat, and then another top coat. My nails were thick and took forever to dry. I arrived there at 6pm, but was the only one left at 8pm when I locked up the place with my technician (awkward). Tip is by cash only. They take cards otherwise. I may be back as it's so convenient to my home... but I'm hoping I have a different person next time! read more

I tried Orchid due to all the great reiews. I love it there. Hahn, the owner, and his wife Mini are great. The place is clean & bright, and the best part that you can have a conversation with your manicurist/pedicurist. All are friendly & outgoing. They do waxing as well. Prices are awesome, $10 for a mani, $33 for mani/pedi. Parking is tough. My manicure lasted for a good 4 or 5 days, which is more than from most places. My pedicure looked good for 3 weeks. I felt totally comfortable dozing while receiving my pedicure. My only complaint is that many of the OPI colors do not have names on them, so you may not be able to find the exact one you want. Other than that, I am really happy with Orchid. read more

This place is under new management and this was my first visit. It is a nice open, clean space and all of the stations, chairs and pedicure chairs are brand new. They have a very large fish tank with beautiful fish. There are several manicure stations and a comfortable waiting area. I went on a Sunday morning as a walk in and didn't have to wait. I was told that their busiest days are Friday and Sat. so it may be helpful to call ahead on those days. I got a french manicure from Hahn (the owner) for $15. It looks great! I recently moved to Salem and have been hoping to find a small nail spa. This is the one that I'll be going to! I had a good experience here and look forward to my weekly manicures with Hahn. Also, there was a woman sitting next to me that drives up from Saugus just to go there...that was a good sign. read more

Orchid is a fantastic nail spot right on Derby Wharf. The owners are darlings. They are so friendly and take the time to get to know you. The location is large, colorful and very clean. They also have a broad selection of OPI, ESSIE and Jessica colors. The colors are always current with the lines that are out too (at least for OPI)....And did I mention it is a STEAL! They do such a good job. I've been to a lot of the top spas in Boston and let me tell you - Orchid does just as good a job, if not better, for half the cost. Manis are $10 I believe. Standard mani/pedi is $35 and they really take their time. If you are going for a lil splurge, go for the Delux @ $45. Its well worth the investment. You get a little more TLC and also they do a eucalyptus or menthol mask on your feet and legs. Its wonderful! If you plan on a Saturday afternoon, call ahead, they do tend to get busy. read more

I was at a loss about what to do for manis/pedis before my wedding right near the Wharf, so I made an appointment here in advance for me and the bridal party. I happened to be up here last weekend finalizing some things and decided to pop in and treat myself to a mani/pedi and check them out. I was extremely surprised at how friendly and efficient the staff were (Sorry, but I'm still used to NYC where staff don't look at you at all and certainly don't talk to you). This was a nice change! The $35 mani/pedi was fabulous and relaxing. The staff offer bottled water to the customers which I also thought was a nice touch. I liked Mary so much, I asked her to take care of me for my wedding. Like someone else, I was told to bring champagne and any snacks we might like to have - which I thought was nice and goes a long way to setting the stage for the day. read more

I tried this salon based on other reviews and I was not disappointed. Both my husband and I went for pedicures. They had a nice selection of polish (for me, not him), wonderful massaging chairs with foot baths and the place looked really clean and well maintained. I was very impressed with the staff, the prices and by how long my feet looked good after the treatment. We were offered water and magazines and engaged in friendly chat by the people who worked on us, rather than wondering if they were talking smack about us while they speak in foreign languages to each other. (That's been my experience all too often!) Boys, don't be shy! Go get a pedi! My husband has feet like a Hobbit & has been avoiding going to the doctor to take care of an ingrown toenail. The woman who took care of him alleviated the problem for him with two snips and transformed his Frodo feet. Even his guy friends commented on the results. Truly fantastic. The polish did not last, four days later my pedicure Polish was peeling. I have to start off by saying that I have been spending years going from one salon to another trying to find a place that is both affordable, does a great job on nails, and where the people are friendly and actually talk to you. I think Orchid has all of these characteristics. It was only $33 for a mani + pedi and my nails came out all shiney and pretty and they didn't get nail polish all around my cuticles like a lot of places do. Also, the people who work there are super friendly and funny. And they didn't rush me out the door without my nails being fully dry - in fact, it was quite the opposite. They made sure my nails were dry enough and then they helped me put my socks and shoes back on and were very attentive to me. UNCLEAN Salon is easy to get to but there is a problem with cleanliness. When the nail technician asked me to go to the sink to wash my nails, I noticed that there was barely any disinfectant in the jar that had the nail brushes. I told the nail technician and she laughed and did not clean out the jar or add more disinfectant. No concern of hers. The nail brushes were not clean and old. Also, the bathroom was not clean, especially the sink. It is super important to make sure the nail brushes are disinfected from each customer. I don't think the Salem Board of Health would agree with their lack of cleanliness. read more

Stopped in as I was at the Wharf for other business. Decided to try them out for a regular manicure. Nails had been done a week ago with no cuticle issues. I will never go back again. Two cuts on my cuticles that were bleeding got a "oh, so sorry". Got another "so sorry " when she doused them with alcohol. I had to ask that she refile several nails that were not smooth, and then had to refile at home. Cream was applied quickly with no real massage. The polish was applied in a very haphazard way. I regret that I did not discuss this further, or, refuse to pay. I should add that for most of my service time there were no other customers so time was not an issue. Having moved to Salem from the city, I was worried about finding a quality nail salon that didn't overcharge and that provided a good quality service. I'm thrilled to have found Orchid Nails, on Pickering Wharf. The top thing anyone should look for is cleanliness, and Hahn keeps his salon in tip top shape. The pricing is ridiculously reasonable (we've all been saying that, so if Hahn is smart and reads these reviews, he may raise his $10 manicure to $11!) and the polish selection trendy (and new - there is nothing worse than an old, icky bottle of OPI!) I've also had waxing services - again, reasonably priced. Hahn's wife can do an immaculate bikini wax in under 5 minutes. Though not for the shy, it was the fastest, most thorough waxing I've had. Okay - so your eyes may tear up a bit, but hey - it's over in no time! The shop is open Sundays (but closed Mondays) which is a nice bonus. They do take walk-ins, but I like to call an hour or so ahead of time, just to make sure. They do accept credit cards - but tips must be paid in cash. read more

Based on the reviews I read I decided to give Orchid a try. My sister and I were warmly greeted as soon as I walked through the door. We both decided to go for the mani/ped combo for $35.00. Nini, one of the owners spend a considerable amount of time on me. The foot massage was subline. She asked if I wanted my brows waxed as well. SInce it was only going to be $10.00 and I was planning on doing them soon I let her do them. I am so glad I had her do them. I've had them done in the past but she created the best shape ever. Two stars because they're kind of nice but rush through the process. The shop isn't clean and I don't know where or if they sterilize the their tools. My hands were shoved a bowl of water that had nails floating around in it. I like my nails short and wanted a dark blue. I realize painting short nails can be a pain-ok, but use a tool with some acetone to remove the excess polish. Don't just smear it around with your nail. They were filed but not smoothly. I had to file them out when I got home. The lady used the buffer on my toes and dragged it across my skin and then used alcohol to wipe them off. That burned like hell! I asked for a snowflake-which they had on their color wheel! So, clearly I thought they could do it without issue. They look nothing like snowflakes. Maybe a drunken snowflake. She told me one nail was shorter so that is why it looks like it does. Umm, ok. There's a reason they're not that busy. read more

You get a massage chair... Magazines and water if you like. My go to gals are Mai and Alina who are both fantastic and give great attention to detail. They also provide gel on toes and fingers... Thank you fellow Yelpers, for guiding me on the right path to a wonderful pedicure experience at Orchid. Hoooray, they are walking distance away from my house and on Pickering Wharf, right near a real Yelp-er's delight of a hair salon, Fringe. So, get your hair done at Fringe, nails at Orchid, and then go have a martini at Finz. Need I say more? I would recommend making an appointment at Orchid, as they get pretty busy on weekend days. I got a pedicure and the guy who did the pedi was fantastic, very friendly and professional. My toes look gorgeous. Everyone in there seems to genuinely like what they do and really appreciate their clients. The salon is very nicely decorated and very clean. A must. Oh, yes, and since it's Salem I might warn you about parking. It can be very tight on Pickering Wharf so look for parking nearby (don't give up!) and plan to get there early. read more

Did not have a good experience. My friend and I went before the 4th of July. We had appointments for pedicures but waited FOREVER (in chairs, but still...). Everyone else was waited forever as well. One girl had an appointment but they didn't realize she had an appointment so they never took her and then she couldn't get her services done before a date. They just kept taking more walk-ins and letting people wait. My friend also got cut during her pedicure. Prob won't be back. read more

The best Spa Pedicure I've had in a long time! Splurge and go for it...$35...it's worth the extra money to get pampered. The massage chairs look brand new, they offer you water ; ) which is a nice touch too. The salon is very clean and tidy. The ladies are very friendly and go out of their way to take good care of you.
