I thought this misfortune would end at the door, yet when Melissa Altman RN then met me for my appointment and was also not wearing one at all, she told me I could take mine off if it made me feel comfortable which obviously it did not and she didn't put on a mask to meet my comfort level displayed. AVOID THIS PLACE (at least until they clean up their act)…read more I'm a big fan of a smart, integrative, multi-disciplinary healthcare model. I work as a nutritionist & personal trainer myself (and actually used to work in integrative medicine when I lived in San Diego), so when I found out that Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine was an integrative practice and was in network for me, I made an appointment, despite the fact that it's located in Summerville and I live in the Mt Pleasant area. Short backstory: I was diagnosed with a joint-related autoimmune condition at age 27 (which is what prompted my foray into a career in nutrition & corrective exercise), and was looking forward to taking the next step in my healing journey by working with ACPM. My experience with them was anything but therapeutic. I had no major problems with the initial consultation. I spent about 90-120 minutes talking with 2-3 different staff- a case manager (Reese I think) who has since left the practice, a nurse practitioner & a chiropractor. They asked me several health related questions, put me thru a short posture & movement screening & took X rays. They also briefly explained some of their services. I was scheduled for a follow up appt to review findings two days later. I again make the 35 minute drive to Summerville two days later for the review of findings session (I should note that they had a clinic in Mt Pleasant listed on my BCBS in network database, but they'd just closed it when I first called them). The case manager Reese (who just started working there when I visited in March but apparently now is gone 2 months later) showed me my X rays and then she & a female chiropractor tried to sell me on a several thousand dollar out of pocket package consisting mainly of chiropractic but also some physical therapy and possible joint injections. It was presented as an "either do this whole thing or buh bye" choice. I was frustrated as I was interested in doing some PT & possible joint injections (most of which my insurance covered) but the chiropractic was just too expensive for me (chiro isn't covered on my BCBS plan). Frustrated at a lack of options, I asked for a copy of the X rays, which I received for $10, and left. Then 2 weeks later coronavirus hits and the clinic temporarily closes. I find a physical therapist in Mt Pleasant to work with and begin receiving care there. I try to share the X rays from Atlantic Coast with my new PT but the files are unreadable. I send 3-4 messages to ACPM over the course of a month and finally receive a convoluted response saying that they can't help me with the X ray files. I WORKED AS A CLINIC MANAGER AT AN INTEGRATIVE CLINIC. IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO CHANGE THE FILE TYPE FOR THE CLIENT'S BENEFIT! There's more frustration to the story too but I'm tired of retelling this experience (in short, I spoke with a Sara and a Sandy on the phone, trying to get a physician's referral from ACPM so I could continue working with my local physical therapist, and they said because I'm not a PAYING CLIENT I can't receive a referral!?). In short- nice building, nice concept, horrible execution, seemingly high staff turnover and a VERY sales-y culture with questionable billing practices. I was takien into a room to discuss the responses to the questions on the paperwork. How long, when did it start, what have you done, do you have this.... This is where the "free consultation" ends. I was then told someone will come in and perform an assessment and that will be billed to my insurance company. So the "free consult" is reading your paperwork. I don't know if their services are good or not, but was turned off with what they believe is a free consultation. I gave two stars because the place was very clean and inviting.
