If I could post less than 1 star I would. The entire dining experience was horrible. My dad was in town for a night and we both love chinese, we were starving and the restaurant was full (not a clue why). We ordered soup, which was bland n slimy. The spring rolls were inedible, they looked and tasted very old. The main courses were also very much below par, did not taste fresh, and the pork was some of the worst i have ever had. I'd have to say this is my favourite Chinese-Indonesian restaurant - partially because Chinese-Indonesian restaurants are something of a Dutch/Flemish specialty, so we don't really get them in UK, where I (notionally?) live. That semantic point aside, nonetheless of the set of Chinese-Indonesian restaurant I've tried in the Nederlands over 15 years or so as a regular visitor, I find this Amsterdam restaurant not far from Dam Square to have the best combination of ambiance (nicely decorated, linen tablecloths), menu (albeit there seem to be less Dim Sum options now than there used to be, with no Cha Siu Bao on my latest visit), service and pricing. Spicy prawns was average, definitely three star worthy. Chicken chop suey? Disgusting. Beyond gross. The portions were generous except when it came to the white rice, super stingy. This is a rave-review! Not outside of San Francisco have I had dim sum this perfectly steamed and freshly prepared. Not a freezer in sight! Sticky rice was just as sticky as it should be, the steamed prawn dumplings, Ha Kauw, were PERFECTION. A 5 min wait was worth the wait and a most lovely waitress, all smiles and service. I am embaressed to say I had THREE ice teas but they were made on real black tea with sugar, ice and lemon and I couldn't control myself! Turned out they were TWO euro a piece. A bargin! Please, for the love of God, don't come here. I live in Den Haag and I had friends visiting from the States, we were looking for good Thai food but we were so hungry that we thought that some dim sum would be just as fine. Were we wrong!! This restaurant sits on 3 stories of primo Amsterdam real estate, I assumed that the food would be good and frankly, wasn't expecting much from service. My friends were on a budget (backpacking) and we tried to keep it light considering how many snacks we anticipated trying out in the streets. We asked for tap water (perfectly potable in the Netherlands as in many European countries) and our hostess pushingly told us that a bottle of flat water would be enough for three people. I asked for a diet Coke and she went off to grab our drinks. This place is DEFINITELY taking glass bottles of water and refilling them with tap water, charging you 7,50 euros for it. The bottle had all kinds of scuff marks and signs of wash and wear. It was just infuriating. Their drink prices are nowhere on the menu. My diet Coke had its cap open, which leads me to assume that they do the same with their soft drinks, and keep a fountain in the back. 9,50 euros on liquids alone!! We placed an order of 2 dim sum and a noodle dish to share, and she replied very sternly and aggressively. "This is not enough food for three people. IT'S JUST NOT ENOUGH!!" We were so embarrassed by the way she yelled that we ordered an additional order of dim sum and hoped that it would be the end of it. I, personally, am very polite with servers, they handle my food and there's a great deal of respect that needs to be paid to people in that position. But I held back from any communication with her after she yelled at us. I assumed that we were just going to have to bite the bullet on this bill and just power through the lunch and count it as a loss. SOMEHOW THINGS GOT WORSE!! When our food arrived, we got our dim sum and noodle dish, a VERY OLD- looking sliced pork dish on the side. It looked like something that came with our noodles, and the server did not deliver this dish herself, so she supposedly had an excuse to have not seen it from the get-go. I avoided it entirely because it looked disgusting, but my friends ate and left most of it, that's how gross it looked. About 5 minutes later, a very pushy older server came by and tried to make room on our table for 3 more dim sum dishes, quite literally saying "Okay you ordered these shrimp rolls ladies!!" I decided to speak up because I knew that they were trying to hike up our bill and very sternly told them that we didn't order those and to take them away. The server comes by after we asked for the check and accusingly pointed at the pork dish and said "Did you order this with someone else??" and we replied that it came with the noodles. She was obviously setting herself up to justify us buying more food than we had initially ordered. My friend had to speak up in a very defensive manner to tell her that we didn't order it, nor were we going to pay for something that they clearly messed up on. She comes back with the check containing the pork dish that we did not order. We had to argue with her to get it off our bill. She continued to point to it and us throughout the whole process and discuss the matter with other employees. It was a very very embarrassing situation to be part of, but in the end we got our check back containing only the items we ordered. Having said all that, it was still sub-par food, the meat was ALL old, the flavors were lacking, the ambiance was horrid, the service was beyond unprofessional, and I wouldn't go there again if I was paid to. The service was mediocre, and everything on our table was dirty. The waiter came out with utensils, cups, and plates. There were unwashed food residue on some of them, and he literally scratched if off with his fingers in front of me as if that was normal. Table cloth had food stains from however long ago, and they didn't bother to change the cloth either. The taste of the food we ordered was no better than some Chinese fast food (In fact, I would prefer some Panda Express over the food we were served with at this restaurant, and I actually don't even like the usually greasy food at Panda Express) For obvious reasons, we will not come back. read more

I'm sort of picky when it comes to Chinese Food. Not that I'm an expert, but I tend to go where the Chinese populace in my city go. The food is always good. But after so many visits to Amsterdam and a close friends hunger, we decided to try this spot. It's always seemed iffy and flashy to me, but after realizing more than 50% of the customers where Asian, I knew I could trust the food here. I also use the same criteria for other Ethnic foods and Truck Stops. Truckers know where to eat. We flipped trough the menu and I was stunned by how many dishes I didn't know. They had my mouth watering in no time. I wish we had been here for Dim Sum. I had a triple meat dish and my friend had a beef dish. Neither of the names spring to mind but i have photos. We enjoyed a couple of appetizers and then our main dishes which we shared. Some veg on the side and we were both very happy. I will be back here for every trip in the future.The best Chinese I've had away from the Western part of the US. Almost as good as my favorite spot in Arizona. Don't be afraid of the area, you want go away disappointed if you eat here. read more

When you sit down you are greeted with about 6 different menus. Be sure to ask for the Dim Sum menu as this is what they are known for and they were great.
