I hate to have to leave this review after finding out that the original owner has passed away, but for those looking to satisfy their craving of traditional Chinese food should pass on the Oriental hut. Years ago this place used to be a great experience as a teen my family would come here, and it would be a self-serve buffet of traditional take away Chinese dishes. There was soft serve ice cream for dessert. Sadly, now it is drive-through only with only a few entrées to select from. We ordered fried rice, sweet-and-sour shrimp, and one of the specials. The fried rice is what's pictured above and I have to say that this was not the fried rice that I'm used to. It had no flavoring of sesame oil. It had no green onions or carrots. It literally just had scrambled egg in with plain rice. This is a fundamental Chinese Takeaway dish that is easy to make; so I was shocked they got it so wrong. sadly our other dishes lacked in flavor and in quality so we'll have to say goodbye to the spot. read more

Food, service and quality ....over priced sad excuse for Chinese food ....would not go again if you paid me

I am pretty consistently driving east and west on highway 60, heading back and forth from Tennessee to Springfield, and I am always looking for good places to stop and eat on this restaurant barren drive and I found one today! The best way I know to put this is I have had wayyyy worse Asian buffets than this one. I stopped in on a Friday night and the place was jam packed which was a good sign. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to pay before or after I ate so I found a table and got a plate then the waitress kindly informed me that you pay before you eat, who knew haha! (It was so packed I couldn't have even gotten to the counter to ask without a hefty wait) so long story short, pay first, eat later. So on to the food. I like to think of myself as somewhat of a Chinese food connoisseur and I truly liked both the cashew and sweet and sour sauce, which at a buffet is rare for me, but they were delightful. The egg roll was good but I thought the crabrangoon was lacking in size and consistency. They did have something I have never seen on an Asian buffet before and that was Kimchi. It made for a great pallet cleanser while switching between the variations of chicken. The fried rice was alright but I liked the steamed better (it has just the right amount of vegetables in it) I finished off my meal with a little bowl of chocolate soft serve ice cream which is almost a must at an American Asian buffet. The Oriental Hut has been in Mountain Grove for many years, and has outlived many other restaurants that have had to close their doors. The people are friendly. The food is good and reasonably priced. There's a salad bar that comes with the buffet. Both have yummy selections, although you might have to wait a bit for a buffet refill because the place gets swamped with diners at meal times. It's not a big restaurant so the buffet isn't stocked with several dozen entrees like some of the huge big city restaurants. I'm posting a review because somebody apparently thought the Oriental Hut is a Chinese restaurant and gave the restaurant a low rating. It's NOT a Chinese restaurant. It's a Chinese-American restaurant. Having dined in real Chinese Restaurants I can safely say there ls a BIG difference. I like both Chinese and Chinese-American. I'm not easy to impress, but I think it's a great little place if you're hungry and in the mood for Chinese-American food. Or if you just want a good salad. You can get a quick meal or you can linger for a while. read more

me and my family stopped there to eat. I will never go back. the food was cold. the food was not good at all. the service was bad. my 15 year old took one bite and could not eat anymore due how bad the food was. so I asked for management. when she came to the table she was rude before I even said anything. when I asked if I could get a refund for my 15 year old. she said nope as far as I am concerned she ate her plate of food. now keep in mind there where 5 of us and I only asked her for a refund for my 15 year old. because all us but her tried a bite of a few thangs. never again. needless to say we went down the road to taco bell. sad just sad. read more

Single meals were over priced. The buffet did not have a big variety. The white steamed rice was over cooked, the cashew sauce needs improvement but the staff was friendly overall so that's the only positive input here. Nice efforts on the Chinese Mountain Grove. read more

I'm editing this review due to finding out some new information, namely that they actually do use *milk* in their soup. YUCK. I always wondered how they got it to look cloudy.... I liked the soup before finding out about the milk, and now I feel sort of like I've been defrauded all these years. Oriental restaurants are NOT supposed to add milk to soup, and I trusted that I was not involuntarily consuming something that normally I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Aside from the soup, the food is acceptable. Variety of dishes is good, but nothing beats a good milk-free soup to whet the appetite. read more

If I could leave this without a star I would. I went and ask for house fried rice when I returned to my room it was just plain rice when I called they said that was fried rice. Hell fried rice has vegetables, chicken, beef or pork in it. I also wasted egg drop soup no way the put condensed milk in their egg drop soup if you want real Oriental food don't go here. They have no idea what they are doing. read more

Waiting for open for 30 min. Once inside learned they only take cash or check. It's 2016, I always have to wonder the reasons why places don't take credit or debit cards. I suppose it's nice to know some places are still old school but for me and my family it equals "if you don't take card, you'll never have our business" I'd like to write about how good the food was but I left as they did not accept the form of payment I use. We stopped here for dinner on our way through on a road trip. The food was good (my wife and daughter LOVED the zucchini bread), the service was friendly, but I'm sot so sure how "oriental" the cuisine is. It is easy to miss along the road, and they don't take cards, though we were told that they would have accepted an out-of-state check. All in all, ok. read more

Passing by Mountain Grove, MO craving for hot food and found this place on internet. This surely is a pleasant surprise in this lovely little town! Food on the buffet line was fresh, ample choices (especially considering the low price they charge) and very tasty! The restaurant ambience is pleasant, lots of big windows, and this place is exceptionally clean. Staff is courteous and helpful, constantly bussing our table. My favorite is their stir fried beef steaks with yellow and green onion, tender and very flavorful. Also their fried chicken pieces, they are nicely marinated, juicy inside, crispy outside. Their stir fried vegetables with chicken also very nice, full of yummy variety of fresh vegetables including water chestnuts, yum! Overall, a very satisfying meal. I'm dining with some native Chinese at this place and they all approve the quality of the food, if that might also mean something. read more
