I heard about this Asian market from a friend (she transplanted from Japan to Kansas over a decade ago and has been a font of information on great Asian restaurants and stores). Anyway, she told me about Oriental Market Place. Originally it focused on Korean and Japanese items, it was bought out recently and has apparently expanded. Still, when I went in. I saw a lot of Japanese items. They also had a freezer section for frozen meats (Kalbi-style cut short ribs, oxtail, fish, pork, etc). There was mochi. There was a woman making sushi that smelled like home, so I bought a roll. They have a small selection of produce, a lot of canned and packaged things. They even have a back section with some small cooking appliances and dishes that reminded me of Shirokiya (Japanese store in Hawaii) in the old days. They didn't have the long squash I was looking for but overall the selection was great and the market seemed organized and well tended. The cashier was very nice too. One important note, if you decide to check this place out. Save your sanity, park in the lot along Metcalf on the opposite side of the complex and walk. That side was mostly empty. The parking right in front of the market crowded and tight. The way into a row is the same way out. Stalls go right up to the border of the property and people don't look before driving. read more

Starting to love this store as I keep visiting it more frequently. I love the Korean and Japanese selections. You can buy freshly made pancakes, banchan, fish balls, sliced meat, and fresh gimbap. I love their fresh selection of produces too, it's more decent in price and quality then the big Asian Supermarkets. I would recommend to come here on a weekday vs weekend. It's get jam packed here quite often during busy hours. However, if you just know what you want, it's easy to get in and out. The store is bigger than it looks on the outside. I've been here a few times over the past couple years. Good selection and variety. The cashiers I've interacted with are friendly. The store is a bit dull but overall clean and comfortable. The only issue- my boyfriend and I purchased about $70 worth of random snacks and drinks. We got home and saw about 90% of our items were expired by a year or a year and a half. I really love this grocery store. I've visited a few in the area and this is the one I keep going back to. I love the selection of Korean ingredients. You can buy freshly made banchan, sliced meat for grilling or hot pot, and there's a lady that makes kimbap on site. What I love the most is the selection of fresh groceries at the best price point compared to other big Asian groceries. If you love mushrooms, come here.. there is a wide variety for you to choose from. They are lacking in some key Vietnamese brands that I normally use but I don't really mind. There are some alternatives they offer that work just fine. This place is sort of a maze and tight to maneuver around. I recommend going on a weekday at any time. Again, I don't need to repeat but don't expect Assi-Mart, H-Mart, or 99 Ranch. Instead this little grocery has jammed packed appliances, tea pots, and sushi ware which seemed to be alot nicer over the 888 Supermarket's Daiso quality dishes and cups. I found some cute zebra scissors that I got for my son along side with alligator comb. This is my favorite Asian grocery store in Kansas and love visiting here. The store has a huge selection considering how small it is and usually has my favorite Korean pancakes - which I did not see any last time I visited. The prices are very reasonable and they have a discount/rewards card you can get. The staff is always efficient and usually pretty friendly. I like this store a lot too because you can sometimes get fresh-ish bakery items too. They usually get new stuff in frequently and it is not just the same ole stuff every time you go. I've always going here for specific Asian ingredients, especially Korean focused. This is a Korean Asian market that always has the item I'm looking for. Even sometimes when the specific produce I need at the other Asian markets are sold out, I can still find it here most of the time. Whenever I need kimchi, gochujang, or produce, I go here. In the back, there's a lady who rolls kimbap (gimbap) and I always grab one for a lil snack for the day. There are more Korean items compared to other types of Asian backgrounds, But there are still products from other cultures that can be purchased here. Some of the stand out things that they have that other markets don't always do- a bonchon "deli" counter where they have 5-10 different varieties of small side dishes like squid, raw crab, perilla and sesame leaves. Instead of your usual kimchee, kimchi cucumber, and daikon varieties, they have more exotic options. We purchased some kim bop which was very delicious. Be mindful of the cashiers charging you stuff that you never bought. This happened to us when we got home for Serrano chili, which we never bought and happened to be the first thing that was charged. My favorite asian grocery store in the area. They always have a nice selection of fresh asian leafy greens, seasonal veggies and fruits as well as a generous selection of dried goods. Lots of well known Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Viet, Thai, and Taiwanese brands. There's also always lunar holiday appropriate stuff too ( like fall "harvest" snacks and sweets ) And kimchi, so much yummy kimchi. They stock 4( ish ) brands of kimchi ( all imported...) and over half-a-dozen varieties. *** Tip*** the Korean brand ( usa made ) tofu they stock is the best tofu in town both flavor and cost wise. The tofu is all organic and minimally processed ( per ingredients list ) and retains that soybean flavor that you normally only get with homemade tofu. Super silken, silken, soft ( or firm ) and firm ( aka super firm ) varieties are usually always in stock. read more

Today was my first time at this supermarket. I stopped by after picking up some bread from Tous les Jours in the hopes of finding some ingredients that I couldn't get at 888 Int'l. The store was a lot bigger inside than it looked from the outside. Although I didn't wander around for too long since I was in a hurry, I did notice that their prices seemed really affordable compared to 888 Int'l, and their produce more fresh, although there was a smaller selection to choose from. I came looking for okra, shallots, beef ribeye, catfish steaks, pate, and french bread. I was able to find the first three, but not the last three. However, I did end up leaving with an extra item: Strawberry flavored Kit Kats for my coworkers. read more

This place has great selection. Super cramped. Don't get stuck here, in an earthquake. I don't know if it's because of my color or if it's because I'm a woman, but I really felt like the younger male Korean owner was following me. I was merely asking several associates about their products, in various languages, since they're multi-ethnic, but I wasn't bothering anyone, nor asking long questions. All the products interested me, so I looked at everything. Needless to say, I felt very uncomfortable by him. I was a paying customer, after all. I may have to just continue to go to Pan-Asia, at this point.....(((sighs))) I was hoping to be closer to more Asian-Fusion grocery shops, guess not. :'( read more

I like this place. It's my go-to for grabbing a tin of Thai red curry, or a bag of pre-prepared Korean soup (seriously those bags of Korean meals in the open fridge directly to the left front when you walk in are AWESOME when you're feeling lazy...especially the Budae Jjigae, which is like Korean bean and weenie soup). It's much quicker than trying to run in and out of 888! I've definitely run across some not super friendly employees, but the owner (and really the whole family that runs it, and works there) is awesome and incredibly helpful. If you've never had kimchi I def recommend getting it from here. They do pretty brisk business, so their jars are always fresh. read more

I stopped here to pick up some groceries this afternoon and I was pleasantly surprised at the size of this market. There is a free loyalty program called Bonus Card that gives 5% off purchases over $10. Once you earn $10 in bonuses, you get some sort of reward. I think I should have paid more attention, but rewards "for free" are great (different from paying for a membership to get 5% off like at International Marketplace in Vegas). The store is divided into 3 sections. Upon entering on the right, there are mainly teas, refrigerated goods, desserts, and drinks. Some banchan was for sale including what looked like house-made kimchi. I saw a lot of Japanese ingredients in the store, which was great considering it is primarily a Korean market. For the first time, I found sudachi juice! In the middle section of the store was a huge number of aisles featuring noodles, sauces, oils, dry goods, spices, sauces, furikake and snacks. These were organized primarily by country. There was a Filipino section, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Also, there were several frozen cases in this area, including lots of seafood, dumplings, and sweets. This section also had fresh produce. The final section to the left had kitchenware. There was a significant number of Asian-style serveware, cookware, and kitchen tools. I think I had most of the tools. There were clay pots, bento boxes, and everything else you could imagine. The cashier was very friendly and seemed to recognize some regular customers. I was able to find mentaiko here which is awesome, along with thinly shredded strips of fried tofu in the frozen section. This is a great place to get Asian ingredients. read more

Went on a hunt for mochi a few years ago after my husband decided it was his favorite food. Buying them one at a time at the sushi restaurants was becoming expensive. I finally found mochi here. Great flavor selection. I get a little sad when they run out of my favorite brand and they won't tell me when a new shipment will come in... they just tell me to try something else. I've made a lot of trips to this store since then. I've found a lot of other food here as well - quail eggs for example. I stopped looking for these a long time ago. I had just given up. There they were - just when I least expected it. Bought some zodiac themed teacups here for a few birthdays. They have a wonderful assortment of dishes and cookware. Their candy selection is very exciting. I like to wander the aisles and look at everything. The location is kinda hidden -- it's close to Jose Peppers, but not in the same section of shops. This trip, we stocked up on some Asian staples: Noodles (udon, soba, ramen, etc) Owl Milk Tea sachets (AWESOME!!! $5.50 for 12 sachets) Mochi ice cream Gyoza (frozen) Curry and I'm thrilled to see a great selection of Filipino jarred fruit - for when we need Filipino Fruit Salad. I told him to "Give it back." He rudely passive-aggressively handed me my money, and one of the coins fell out of my hand. All because I said, "Did you count it?" ... I had to recount it for him... Business owner, if you are reading this. You be dam keep close eyes on your cashiers when it comes to cash. Always recount customers' money. What would happen if a customer lied and turns out the amount wasn't enough to pay for the items? You will lose money. And don't be asking customers how much money they were giving when it's quick math. That's lazy and unprofessional. read more

The vegetable always good and fresh, good variety & choice of frozen seafood, bagged or boxed raw or dry noodle package, fresh make Bimbab on site & ready to eat Jap Chae in container from Cafe Vie. FYI: Tous Les Jours --- bakery store few steps away from Oriental Supermarket --- Also owned by this successful owner. Has everything I need. Very clean and well-organized and the very nice staff is always happy to help me find anything. I come mostly for the Korean groceries (rice, kimchi, bulgogi meat, dumplings, etc.) but we're pretty multicultural in our tastes and also buy our Thai curry paste and pad thai and Chinese ingredients here too. The produce is also good--the skinny purple eggplants that are much tastier and never bitter, bok choy at 1/3 the price of the regular grocery store, sprouts and other specialties. Great tofu selection, mochi and prepared foods area. Oh and I love the expanded housewares department. Bento boxes for my kids' lunches, cool strainers and bowls and sushi rollers and lots of other ingenious and useful kitchen stuff that's super cheap. Like Pryde's at 1/4 the price! read more

This place gets five stars because I now have something to compare it to since 888 has opened up. After five or six visits to 888, I have deemed that Oriental Supermarket is more than adequate for what I am shopping for. Though the variety may be slightly lacking here compared to 888 (in terms of different Asian countries) I am typically looking for certain Korean brands, and I find them all here. Maybe it's because I've been coming here for years, but I find this store much less confusing than 888. I also find it easier to ask questions here. I appreciate their prepared Korean banchan varieties and that they have a reward card (not advertised, you have to ask for this) which gives you 10% of your purchase back in store credit. No, this is not your big city Asian grocer, but it'll do for the small population of Asians (and non-Asians) looking to find familiar goods. read more

This is predominantly a Korean market, but they carry groceries from other East and Southeast Asian cuisines. The produce is cheap and you can find things here that you can't easily get at conventional grocers, things like bamboo and burdock root. They also have a large canned good section with lots of fruits and the gluten meats that are really hard to find in the U.S. It's a bit hit or miss on what is in stock, and you need to watch the quality. We mostly shop here for the Japanese groceries, which are decidedly more expensive than at Asian markets in the Chicago area, but the prices are pretty equal with 888, the major KC area competitor of Oriental Supermarket. You can find Japanese standards such as yaki soba noodles, Okonomiyaki sauce, furikake, bonito, mayo, and various staples like Japanese brands of soy sauce, miso pastes, jagaimo powder, nori, broths, and tempura batter. The frozen section has a nice offering of gyoza, and a few varieties of shumai. In season you can find nabe broth and various deserts. The tea and seaweed section is good, and the kimchi section is fantastic. They sell bulk rice and a limited offering of prepared foods at the front of the store. The back of the store has a selection of dishes, kitchen wares and other household goods. If you shop here frequently, or if you spend a good deal of money here, be sure to ask for a VIP bonus card. You can get 5% cash back after you spend a certain amount. They aren't forthcoming with the cards, but it's a pretty good deal. read more
