I heard about this Asian market from a friend (she transplanted from Japan to Kansas over a decade ago and has been a font of information on great Asian restaurants and stores). Anyway, she told me about Oriental Market Place. Originally it focused on Korean and Japanese items, it was bought out recently and has apparently expanded. Still, when I went in. I saw a lot of Japanese items. They also had a freezer section for frozen meats (Kalbi-style cut short ribs, oxtail, fish, pork, etc). There was mochi. There was a woman making sushi that smelled like home, so I bought a roll. They have a small selection of produce, a lot of canned and packaged things. They even have a back section with some small cooking appliances and dishes that reminded me of Shirokiya (Japanese store in Hawaii) in the old days. They didn't have the long squash I was looking for but overall the selection was great and the market seemed organized and well tended. The cashier was very nice too. One important note, if you decide to check this place out. Save your sanity, park in the lot along Metcalf on the opposite side of the complex and walk. That side was mostly empty. The parking right in front of the market crowded and tight. The way into a row is the same way out. Stalls go right up to the border of the property and people don't look before driving.

Again, I don't need to repeat but don't expect Assi-Mart, H-Mart, or 99 Ranch. Instead this little grocery has jammed packed appliances, tea pots, and sushi ware which seemed to be alot nicer over the 888 Supermarket's Daiso quality dishes and cups. I found some cute zebra scissors that I got for my son along side with alligator comb. There were some other things like sink strainer that I can never find except rare occasion at Home Goods.

Great supermarket! There are a lot of good options from veggies to noodles. They make fresh gimbap/Kimbap. Great service.

My Grandparents loved natural food. They were Farmers in Kentucky; my Grandfather had 2 gardens. 1 For his family and 1. for Farmer's MKT.

This Overland Park Asian Grocery store is better than Walmart. Be a promotor of small family businesses. This is how China gets ahead. All the little tent stores in Seoul, Korea; where I once lived.

I like this place but their beef short ribs are disappointing. Very expensive but look at the pic. I don't know if some pieces are even short ribs.

Definitely a plus if you love Korean precut beef and to go marinade sauce!!

I have to travelling out of Kansas City to find a Korean supermarket. Great places for oriental food to start cooking at home! Definitely, they do offer fresh prep meats!!

Their selection of beef. Across from the beef, there's also a case with pork and lamb.

Ask the Community - Oriental Supermarket

Do they sell packaged Onigiri like they do in Japanese 7-11s?

No, this is a Korean-owned establishment. What they have beyond truly manufactured foods is chiefly Korean fare e.g. gimbap rather than sushi rolls.

Does this place have ramune if so what flavors?

Yes, Oriental Supermarket does have ramune. Right now, it has original, strawberry, grape, and matcha flavors.

Is the Korean Gifts and Video place still there? Looking for KPOP merchandise. Would like to know before I travel to Overland Park.

Yup, like 2 or 3 doors to the left of the grocery store.

    Do they have beauty products?

I didn't see any, but the gift shop to the left of the supermarket entrance does have a few beauty products: Oriental Gifts/Korean Gifts and Video.

I have been trying to figure out which grocery store had those fruit shaped cakes. I walked into World Fresh Market. The front of the produce reminded me of City Market. Beyond the produce, not a regular store. This grocery store has the prettiest cakes I've ever seen. There's flan larger than a regular cake. There's bags of iced cookies. Breads of all types. Oh, they also have tacos plus a Mexican restaurant attached. The bakery winds around to the middle of the store. Those fruit shaped cakes? Right there. So cute and looking yummy. I can't say enough about the bakery. I bought little fruit shaped watermelon fruit cakes. I also bought pistachio filled croissants. This is absolutely my favorite store. I'll be back cause I'm in this area often. But seriously, stop by the bakery and get a mousse cake if you want to be the favorite at a potluck.

Unfortunately that's not what happened and I was too hungry to say anything. I had the falafel bowl. The dude just piled up whatever was in the bins & threw them in the bowl with some kind of awkward semi organized manner, while *completely* ignoring the hummus and the garlic sauce. I swore he put the hummus in first, but at the end I asked him if there was Hummus in my falafel bowl- and the answer was no. As in NO HUMMUS IN A FALAFEL BOWL. I also wanted garlic sauce and he refused to put it into MY food only on the side like some kind of lame afterthought for the flavor impaired. My buddy got the shawarma wrap, which looked more like a taquito. They put french fries in the shawarma wrap, along with a little bit of shawarma- and not much else. The advertise price was $9.99 but when we got to the register the price became $11.99. when we brought it to their attention that his shawarma wrap was not actually what they charged us - which they called a "viral ribeye shawarma" they try to tell us the extra $2 was for the nine french fries they added to the package. I GET that were in Kansas, and there's not too many folks that even know what a falafel or shawarma is- but these guys who spoke the language of these regions so they certainly do, or I guess I should say- they used to know what it was. I am quite disappointed by what they've become, I hope they understand this- but I probably won't find myself willing to give it another shot for a while.

Then I saw this quaint Asian store and knew I had to stop. Crossing over the threshold into this store takes you into another world. It is a world filled with new smells, bright colors and unusual items and I loved every minute of this experience. I know absolutely nothing about Asian food or grocery stores. Seriously NOTHING so this is a new adventure for me. There was one worker behind the register and I discovered this is a family store. The father owns two stores- one in Topeka and one in Overland Park. The son runs this store and he could not have been more helpful. He took the time to help me find my items and he explained how of the ingredients could be used. I had a million questions and he did not bat an eye. He was helpful, patient and kind. One thing I noticed is that the son/owner knew most of his customers by name. There seemed to be bevy of repeat customers because they were all familiar with each other. He even remembered what they had purchased on their last trip to the store. There were plenty of dry goods. This store had everything from sweets to plantain chips. Such a wide variety. They !so had a well stocked frozen section, too. They had plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, too. The produce was in the cooler and it all looked very fresh. The prices seemed very reasonable considering that most of the items had to be shipped long distances and this is a small store. I was not unhappy with the prices at all. There was plenty of parking in a big lot outside. This store is in a busy strip mall but parking does not seem to be an issue. There was also easy access to this store from the street. I do not often buy Indian food but if I ever need such products again, I know the exact store to shop. This store is amazing!
