It's been a while since I've been back here, but I was craving some good Laotian food. I brought my brother, who was visiting from Houston, to give it a try and it did not disappoint. Everything was delicious! The laab sen was full of flavor with just the right amount of spice--it honestly made me miss Houston so much. The papaya salad was perfectly made and had a great spicy kick. The pad see ew was nicely cooked with wonderful flavor, and the khao poon was rich, comforting, and absolutely delicious. TL;DR: Decent but not nearly as good as the reviews have made it out to be. If you want to get Lao, Thai, or Vietnamese food like the kinds offered here, get it somewhere that prides itself on it. For dishes similar to Lao cuisine, I'd recommend Spicy One in Overland Park. Thai, I'd always recommend making the trek out to Waldo Thai (it's worth it) and for Vietnamese, I'd recommend Pho Saigon in Overland Park or Pho Lan in downtown KC. When I first heard about this place, I couldn't believe this little market had flown under my radar in Olathe for so long and had to try it. My group and I got the Pad Kra Prao (stir-fried beef and peppers) with a fried egg and the Khao Poon (rice noodles in curry with bean sprouts and mint). It was a joy to see these traditional dishes on a menu, but neither were exactly what I'd hoped for. Khao Poon is supposed to be rich and multilayered, but it was rather one-dimensional and tasted mostly like peanuts. The Pad Kra Prao was better and the spices came through well, perhaps a little too well on the black pepper. Overall, the food was good for one visit but after the Yelp reviews on this spot, I was hoping for more. If you do decide to try Asian Food Market, keep in mind that the food court can seem deserted upon first glance since no one staffs it and few people eat here, but one of the checkout clerks can provide menus and utensils. read more

The food is good, service is really bad and the groceries are so-so. I walked in and was the only customer, thought they would be attentive but instead the lady asked me pho? Pho? I said no I wanted to see the menu, but she'd kept pushing "pho? Pho?" And assumed that's what I wanted. I waited for a menu but instead she went to the back and ordered me a pho, when it came out I told her I wanted to order from the menu. She got mad and after she took my order ranted about me to her worker. Weird experience but not a big deal, whoever reads this just be careful of the "angry-assuming lady" and her rants. The cafe inside this Asian market serves Lao and Thai food, with seating in the front of the building, the market in the middle, and the kitchen in the back. I tried the chicken pho ($7.95). It was served with a smile about eight minutes after I ordered at the front, and came in a large 8" bowl with a plate full of fresh veggies and sprouts. The fair amount of chicken was white and premium. I added some sriracha for a good amount of heat, and a delicious dish. The dining area was spartan, but clean, with a TV, and a good variety of condiments on each table including sriracha, hoisin sauce, fish sauce, beef flavored paste, and white pepper. The service was super friendly, laid back, cheerful, and helpful. There was also a descriptive picture menu available for those not familiar with Lao and Thai foods. Excellent! read more

I've been visiting Kansas couple times but it's so hard to find a good restaurant here . I finally found the place for my go to ! Their pho, kao poon and egg rolls are a must haves ! The kao poon taste just like what Hmong pekple would make. The broth is a little bit too little for both of the kao poob or pho But overall, I'm still okay with it. The pho taste like Vietnamese pho . They also have the beef paste for you to put it on too , which is a plus because beef paste are expensive and not a lot of restaurants will do this ! Egg rolls is also great ! Some are super plain at other restaurants but this is a pretty good egg roll ! I will be going back to try their kaopiaj, phad see ew , and phad Thai ! To start, this was the most inexpensive pho I've had in the suburbs. As soon as it was brought to my table, I could smell the aromas in the soup. It had a few more levels and flavors than a typical pho I've had here. When I stopped in there wasn't anyone around the restaurant seating area, so I asked the gentleman sitting at the grocery register if food was being served that day. He looked at me and didn't respond - I wasn't sure if it was a language barrier or if he hadn't heard me so I repeated myself in Vietnamese. In an annoyed tone, he said yes there's food at the restaurant and pointed to the seating area. So I sat myself and waited (in view of him), and no one came to help. He didn't call anyone to help, nor did he say anything to me if I was doing something wrong. After 10 minutes of waiting, I saw that another family brought their food from the back and seated themselves to eat. I walked back to see if maybe there was a place to order in the back, but I didn't see anything. Anyway, no signs giving direction, rude service, and I ended up leaving because it was so awkward. He knows my order by heart bc I've been here so many times. As soon as I wAlk in he says "same?" With a huge smile on his face. His brother, mom and wife also help with the business and everyone is very very friendly. I've tried their pho and dumplings soup. Their broth is absolutely delicious. Their toppings plate is usually very generous and I LOVE that they give you lettuce to put in your pho. Asian Food Market is the only place I've ever been given that for my pho. I also always order their hot tea. Jasmine tea is their best hot tea! I love it. All the food there is very inexpensive $8.95 for a huge bowl of pho! Stopped by the Asian Food Market, which is near the intersection of I-35 and Santa Fe in Olathe (SW quadrant). Based on some of the glowing reviews here, I thought I'd check out their pho. The restaurant portion of the establishment is in the front 15% of the building. When I arrived, this part of the store was a bit cluttered with boxes and it wasn't clear whether it was operational. The nice guy at the counter assured me that it was. He was extra friendly and welcoming and walked me through the menu. As per my plan, I got the beef pho (had both strips and chunks of beef). The star of the show, of course, was the broth. I found it to be very flavorful. There was a slight cloudiness to it as others have commented upon. I probably would not have noticed had I not read the reviews here in advance. It's not clear to me whether this is undesirable, but it didn't lessen my enjoyment at all. I am by no means a connoisseur, but it stacked up pretty well to other phos that I've tasted. Their menu is a bit pan-Asian, and included the Chinese-American classic appetizer crab Rangoon. I'll order this pretty much everywhere I see it. This version was pretty mainstream- I liked it. If 1/2 stars were allowed, I would probably give Asian Food Market 3.5 stars - mainly due to the disarray in the dining area. I bumped it up to 4 stars due to the friendliness of the staff rather than rounding down. But overall, it's a cool place. read more

My grandparents receive food stamps. They tried to use it here and the owners charged them tax although any groceries bought with food stamps should be tax exempt. When they asked the owner about it, she said she gave them a discount on other foods so that this could offset the tax they were charged. My grandparents aren't confrontational and there was a language barrier so they didn't press the issue any further. Something didn't sit right with me whenever they told me this story. The previous owner John was always so helpful. The wife of the the new owners is friendly, her husband not so much. You'll be lucky if you get a half smile and an acknowledgement from him. If you're ordering Lao food from the menu, just realize the new owners are Vietnamese so you're not getting authentic unless the kitchen lady that is Lao is there. They tried to keep the pho a little bit on the Lao side so note the difference. Viet pho is clear and Lao pho will always be on the darker side. I'm Lao my husband is Viet and we both prefer Lao Pho. besides the service, price is a bit on the higher side. The food is made fresh and depending on the day. You'll get some decent food. This is the most authentic Laotion food I've found so far in the metro area. The pho is delicious, eggrolls are properly fried and not overly greasy, the papaya salad is spicy, salty, sour, and sweet (get it if you want a party in your mouth), the lard na is so good, the laap(minced beef or chicken salad) is refreshing as a lettuce wrap and sticky rice. I could go on but I'm sure you get the idea by now. This is primarily a grocery store and secondary, a restaurant. You'll have to let the owner know that you're there for a meal and kind of fend for yourself when looking for a place to sit and a menu. Someone will come and get your order but don't get offended if you are expecting prompt attention. I feel like it just adds another authenticity to this mom and pop shop. I have gotten both carry out and eaten food dine-in at this place. Almost everything my boys or I have ordered has been pretty darn good. Some of our favorite dishes from here is their Pho, papaya salad, chicken laab, soft spring rolls, and the fried spring rolls. The only thing that would be a nice improvement would be if the pho had a little more beef in it because it's pretty skimpy. Terrible service! While the wife is a nice person, always smiling and happily greets customers, the husband on the other hand, can't be bothered to say a simple "hello" as he's too busy on his phone. You ask for help and he looks at you as though you are a complete idiot. He also jacks up the prices as he rings you up, and then when questioned as to why the price differs from what is posted, he makes excuses as to why the price of an item is "marked up"...conveniently, the "new" price isn't posted, but is applied at the time of cashing out...he's a thief friends! Beware as he scans your items....he WILL jack up the price or "by mistake", double charge! I was always a loyal customer but I will not be supporting this business moving forward. Pho in Johnson county!!!!! It's about time. And it's not just the Bánh mì that has me hyped up. Asian Food Market is sort of one of those jack of all trades places. The market's been around for a few years, but the owner's two sisters moved back to KC from Vegas after co-operating a Vietnamese resturant with some Viet folks. So the resturant portion sits in the back of the market. The owners are Laotian, but they also serve Vietnamese and Thai dishes. Also refreshing are the prices of the food. $5.99 for Pad Thai or spicy mint chicken. $2.99 for three harpoon-long Goi Cuon. $7.99 for a while fried tilapia. My 5 stars though are more of a combinationof the food and the freshness of the produce. Everything from plantains to ultra-fresh bok choy, they have a nice variety of veggies. I also like that my favorite brans of Chinese jasmine tea is also available (Saving me a trip to City Market) The Bánh mì (A.K.A. Vietnamese Sandwich) is amazing. The French Bread they use is not to my standard, but it's not their fault I grew up eating it in New Orleans. The ingredients used though are top notch, and I couldn't ask for anything better. The Pho I would cautiously give a 4 our of 5. The broth is a bit on the cloudy side. Well... it's certainly better than NOT having an Asian market in Olathe. I'll be honest, my knowledge of the market side of Asian markets is pretty limited. When I go for the market there is usually a specific one or two Asian ingredients that I need for a dish. I believe this place will do the trick for most. For seafood or produce, I'll probably hit 888 in O.P. I was very pleased to see they had a ton of fresh Chinese broccoli (kai lan) in the cooler when I went. I just discovered this stuff recently, its awesome! Put it in a stir-fry, roast it with some garlic, saute it up with some butter and finish with white wine; its good with any dinner. Try some! The hot food. This is what will likely bring me back. Not because it's the best authentic Asian cooking in town, but because its the only authentic Asian cooking in town, Olathe at least. The Pho is good, not great. The broth, as Kev mentions is rather cloudy, not that its bad, just never seen Pho this cloudy before. The banh mi, is average at best. Not alot on it, rather skimpy on the ingredients. Instead of the usual identifiable bits of meat I'm used to on a banh mi, the one here was filled with sliced mystery meat jello. While this may be more authentic, it's on the fringe of what I will put in my mouth. Fair warning, better to just eat the sandwich, don't look inside. The condiment tray on the tables impressed me. No, I didn't enjoy the fact that everything on the tray was sticky or that they looked like they had been sitting there for years; I liked the taste. Fish sauce, siracha, jalapeno vinegar maybe, crushed red pepper, other stuff. But my favorite and instant addiction; fried garlic in oil! This stuff is righteous! Once I found it I spooned it into my pho and all over my sandwich. I could eat this on anything! Best in the metro; no. Best in Olathe, yes, but by default. read more

Omgawd!!! I love this place. Coming from Hawaii this is heaven to me. Everywhere you go there's some type of Asian store there. Moving to kansas this was the 1st Asian store I went into..... I fell in LOVE!!! They got noodles for daysssss. They have everything you need to cook anything asian. They also got this restaurant in side I'm in love with there beef pho. I had a favorite Vietnamese restaurant back in Hawaii and I thought I would never find anything close to how good it was. BUT this place right here hits the right spot. Discovered this market on my way to my car dealership. I didn't know Olathe had an Asian market -- for a town with such a white-bread reputation it's surprisingly diverse, after all! The Asian Food Market is fairly good sized and is pretty well-stocked, with the merchandise leaning strongly to Southeast Asian goods and brands, so if you're looking for Thai or Vietnamese ingredients, or even Filipino or Indonesian, you're likely to find what you're searching for. Like so many ethnic markets, things seem to be a bit jumbled and you have to kind of figure out the shelving system on your own, but the owners and staff are friendly and can help you find specific things. Didn't try the café, but after reading some of the other reviews I'll go back and check it out. According to one of the other reviews the owners are Laotian, so that might explain why the pho and banh mi aren't exactly the same as at some other places -- they may be serving the Laotian versions of these popular dishes. In any case, you can't have too many options for unusual ingredients if you're an adventurous cook or eater, so I'm happy to add this to my list of sources for yummy things that aren't available at the average supermarket! read more

If you're ever looking to kill two birds with one stone, you can definitely get that done here. Shop and eat all at one spot. They usually receive their shipment of fresh produce on Tuesdays. Depending on the season will determine the variety of exotic fruits you can get. You can also find a lot of your asian ingredients needed. I would say they are comparable in pride to their competition. We usually also dine here. And to much surprise their food is great! I would highly recommend their Lard Nah. Which I can say is probably one of the best in town. Hard to believe that a mom and pop shop would have that to offer. Do caution, don't expect quick service. Due to them being family owned and ran, service is kind of dependent on how many family members are actually working that day. read more

After reading some of the reviews on Yelp, I decided to stop by for a quick lunch and I am glad I did. Since one review said the owners were Lao, I opted for some Lao dishes and ordered Laab Moo (minced pork salad) and sticky rice. I will say that the food was amazing. The laab was perfectly seasoned and not overly sauced like some places. They incorporated a lot of fresh mint and basil and even served the dish with fresh raw veggies (cabbage, cucumber, and string bean). They also have khaopoon on their menu which I have yet to try. The grocery section is typical of most Asian markets in the metro and leans more on the Southeast Asian side. Definitely worth a visit. read more

So I went there today to buy some grocery stuff and when I went home I realized one of the frozen goods is charged different than what's in the tag. When I tried some snacks I noticed they smell and taste old. So ai went back kn the afternoon and trying to return and told them about the receipt. The lady who I know she is new owner. Was being hysterical. She was like "I can't do the return there is no expiration in the bag. And I was like, seriously it's my fault then. Then they don't have to sell it if they can't guarantee their food is fresh. She said next time I need to try it first. Like what?! Eat all the stuff I bought in front of her!? She doss sounds serious!? Then she said the tag is wrong and it is not right. So I said ok but just return the money for the 2 bags of snacks I got who I told her not new and taste old. She wasn't happy she gave me the money back but she said it again, next time you make sure....blah blah! And I told her next time, you make sure your item are new before you sell them!!!! Love this store! I have celiac disease and this is the cheapest place for me to buy items I can eat. They have noodles for everything- rice noodles of every size & thickness, as well as rice papers and every kind of ramen noodle you can imagine. Rice flour is super cheap..$1.19 lb. I went in just before Christmas to buy my son everything needed so he could make sushi at home. They were super helpful and got me everything I needed! They have been helpful and willing to order gluten free soy sauce and other sauces as well. I've not eaten there but there are always people in the restaurant side when I go. This location is much better than the crowded location across the street. Its feels more open and you can find the products you need better. We actually were there for dinner since it had a built in restaurant. I have known the owner for several years since we lived in Olathe. I was in need of some Laotian food. I got the beef Lappe and papaya salad with sticky. I felt like I was in heaven. The two dishes tastes like when momma made them. The rest of my family got crab Rangoon and Pho. I finally found a restaurant that serves authentic Laotian food! I grew up eating Laotian, Thai, and Vietnamese dishes and because of that, I'm very particular in Authenthic Laos, Thai, and or Vietnam dishes. Their Laab is on point and I love their Banh Cuon. Surprisingly, Banh Cuon is a vietnamese dish that isn't served in any vietnamese restaurants in the Kansas City area. I've been searching high and low for a restaurant such as this. Granted there isn't much to look at, the place is passably clean, but the food is great! The price is very fair. It's a hidden gem in the Kansas City area.
