This is a hidden gem in Kansas City. I'm not big on sausages, but these were in a league of their own. Dare I say, best sausages in Kansas City? Outside the store on Saturdays til 2:30pm, Werner's serves sausages on a bun (bratwurst, knockwurst, Polish, Italian, cheddar bier and andouille) for $4.25 each. I love this place and there's not much else I want to say.. But I will. I don't care if it's a Saturday, Monday, whatever day it is I'll eat Werners if I can. You see the line, and you see the line go. The food is so quick you're in and out in a jiffy. If you really complain about a line HERE.. Maybe it isn't the place for you. I'll enjoy more food if you don't. All in all this weiner joint has been here forever and should always be here. No modifications needed. Solid market with some top-notch sausage-fests on Saturdays. You can see the smoke wafting down Johnson Drive as they grill out all kinds of their sausages, all at a couple bucks a pop on Saturday. If you take one thing away from this review it would be to check them out on these occasions. The rest of the market is okay, specializing in German and other European goodies that you're not likely to find at many other places. We tried some lebkuchen, a German cookie that we our family makes around the holidays. We wanted to compare cookies and let me just say we'll keep making these on our own. So much love for Werner's and their food. We love German food and building a German-inspired lunch and Werner's has us covered for the essentials. We typically pick up a variety of brats so we can build our own sampling. Some of our favorites are the classic, smoked cheddar, and knockwurst. An absolute necessity: the german potato salad. You CANNOT skip out on this. It's probably my favorite in the KC area, and we always buy the biggest container available (or two smaller ones) because it doesn't last in our household. Definitely worth going on Saturdays when they have the grill set up. Grab a bite to go, or you can sample some of the different brats. The person working the counter sent us out there once when we couldn't decide what we wanted. The gentleman working the grill basically gave us samples of everything he was grilling. So cool they let us do that and so helpful in deciding what we wanted. read more

I GET people liking this place because it's one of the only German places in the metro. I GET people like the speciality market and the products offered. I DONT get the lines and excitement for the sausage stand on the weekends. Grilled brats on a bun with mustard and half of Shawnee Mission lines up? I'm not really surprised given that we're talking about Johnson County, but what gives? Annoying grillmaster thinks he's on stage at the Improv, being a smart ass to customers and most absolutely eat it up. If he had a sense of humor to go along with his act it would help. I guess when 90% of your culinary life is spent inside a Chipotle/Panera/Starbucks...you need this sort of local flavor. The brats weren't particularly any better than what you can buy off a HyVee meat counter and throw on your grill. The store is nice and includes lots of unique products, but the weekend brat cookouts are overrated in a major way. read more

Excellent 'old-world' workmanship in their house made sausages! I've been around many meat markets both in North America and in Europe and this one ranks among the top-tier if you are looking for authentic, German/Eastern Europe meat preparations. On my most recent trip I found Portuguese sausage next to Polish, beside German, Italian, and Andouille (N'Orleans) you get the scope of potential! Not only those (although an expertise) but also cuts of meat and prepared meals. At lunch, they do a HUGE business with hand made sandwiches that people line up to take away to eat. But if you're pressed for time, there is ample eating area on a long table at the front of the store. Side dishes, soda and chips all yours for the selection! A great way to reconnect with pleasant childhood memories (if you accompanied your Mom to shop at such a place in past years--as I had) and make new ones. (I can't resist a pun here...) After reading a not-so-positive review, I was kind of hoping to be greeted by a grumpy old man. But alas, that was not the case today for lunch at Werner's. In fact, the staff was very pleasant. I was treated to a sample of the grilled sausage of the day (Andouille)... And it was fantastic! They earned 5 stars on the rich, well-seasoned and obviously-made-in-house sausage that was grilled perfectly. It had a kick to it, which makes sense for a Cajun-inspired sausage. The casing had a nice snap to it, and I asked them to dress it with sauerkraut and spicy mustard. It was an explosion of flavor. Can't wait to go back for a Saturday sampling of the wide variety of sausages! I'm very curious about the cheddar bierwurst and the polish varieties - but I'll try as many as I can. We saw them on food paradise and stopped in last Saturday. We were too late for the grilled lunch cart but the lady working wrapped up four of the beer cheddar wurst. As we were about to pay, she said we also have a Jalapeño version and my wife was like we should've got some. The lady wrapped a single one for free. I put them on my rotisserie this week with some good rolls and man they were good. Great snap, great flavor. I preferred the flavor in the non- jalapeño version. Overall great experience while we were there and after we got them home to try them. We had one leftover so this morning it went into weekend breakfast hash, delicious. read more

I have driven past here countless times and I saw a few reviews for it here on Yelp and it convinced me to stop in for a sandwich today. There are all sorts of options for sandwiches and I opted for the smoked turkey based on a recommendation for a fellow Yelper. My sandwich was awesome! At least two inches of smoked, pulled turkey piled high on whole wheat bread with onions, tomatoes, smoked chedder and spicy mustard. The best part? It was less than $4. Very friendly service as well. I've found my new sandwich spot during the week, definitely will be back to try all the other options. read more

This is an amazing shop with some of the finest ingredients that lend toward creating an authentic German meal or just adding some international flavor. But where this store won my heart is the fantastic sandwich counter in the back making some of the greatest of classic sandwiches and other items with a new twist. The price is always right for these monster sandwiches. They often have a sandwich of the day as well for those on a tighter budget. The service is quick and with a smile. Maybe I'm not diehard enough to do cold sauerkraut, and maybe I should have pursued this further, but the grumpy man was impatient with us newbies. And we were the only ones in there, on a Monday, at 12:30. Very unfriendly. I wanted to buy some brats and kielbasa but given the grumpy man and sorry sandwich, I lost my desire to spend any more money and time at Werner's. If you love sausage the way I do, this is the place for you! Handmade German, Italian , Polish and South American sausage, all in one place. The brats and polish sausages for me are the best I'b had. Also, the serve sandwiches from the small deli counter, and on nice weekends days they have a man grilling their sausages for you for lunch. They carry slow smoked pork chops that I like to bring home and then gently heat on the grill - heaven! Besides the sausages :) Werner's stocks a wide variety of authentic German items for your own cooking - from spaetzle to sauces and thin sliced rouladen meat. One of my German buddies and I were out in the area looking for a quick lunch when I told him that there was a German shop in Mission. Being that he does not show much emotion, I was totally shocked and scared when I saw him jumping up and down like a kid in a candy store. This is what Werner's will do to a grown man. Werner's is known for it's homemade sausage and whatnot. I personally use their polish sausage when I make rice and beans. It is also stupid delicious to have one right off the grill. But what really makes this place stand out from a bunch of wannabes in the area is Knackwurst Knack WHAT? Knackwurst is a German sausage that has the appearance of a Hot dog, but has a totally different flavor. If you have yet to try this stuff, you need to get off your consolate butt and get out to this place. Grab a few and grill them at home. Or even better you can go out on Saturday mornings and afternoon's where you will see one of the owners grilling street side selling everything from homemade brats to knacks and all else for $3. Please keep in mind that they sell an andoullie sausage that is fake and nothing like the real thing. Andoullie is traditionally a very coarse pork sausage seasoned with garlic, onions and a barrage of Cajun/Creole seasonings (See my review on Jacob's World Famous Andoullie later). Their interpretation of the sausage is polish sausage with a bunch of red pepper. I will say it is VERY delicious, however it is not an andoullie sausage. I once purchased one of their homemade brats and made it at home. It was totally disgusting. This was a total opposite experience than having the brat they grilled at the store. Which by the way, was finger licking good. So I'll get around to asking them what I did wrong and yada yada. But please try this place. And if you have a German friend, tell them about this place. You might see them jump up and down too! read more

Werner's makes delicious sausages. I particularly like the ones with potato in them, and the liverwurst. It's also a reliable source of my favorite cheese, bierkase, a smelly but nutty and lovely-tasting washed-rind variety. (Every single time I buy it the deli person has made their distaste of handling it plain and questioned whether I was sure this was the order I intended. I think if I was the manager I would discourage my employees from being all "ew gross" about a product I had for sale, but it hasn't felt like intentional rudeness. I choose to think it's funny.) Werner's is a very good source for german products, and most of the charcuterie and cheese seems german. They also sell various whole rye breads frozen. The scandinavian products are more limited, and mostly are canned. But hey, glad I have a place to buy canned fiskeboller when the craving strikes. read more

I grew up in Madison, WI where bratwursts are part of your typical diet. I could always tell which meat market or grocery store brats came from because each had their own taste and all of them were great. All homemade with natural casings, etc. I've been buying brats and other delicious items at Werner's for over twenty years. I think they're the best in KC. Try some! You won't be disappointed. There were only two "off-limits" things I truly craved when I was a vegan: my mom's tuna noodle casserole and liverwurst sandwiches from Werners. My first introduction to the little shop was during a field trip with my German class my sophomore year of high school. Ostensibly, we were going in to look around and expand our knowledge of German culture and cuisine, but in reality I think our teacher just wanted to have an excuse for us all to nosh on delicious, freshly-made sausage, bread, and cheese and say it had been for educational purposes. In any case, I was hooked. For a couple of years, I worked at a vet clinic nearby. At least once a week, I'd drive down and grab a sandwich from them on my lunch break, always opting for the liverwurst. I've been called a bad German for hating sauerkraut, but I feel that my love of liverwurst and Warsteiner trumps this small defect in my genetics. This is also the only place in town I can find prepackaged commercial spätzle, and although I've done it from scratch before, I typically don't have time to go through all that dough-making and noodle-pressing. Another item I can only find here: quark! There was a stretch of time in my late teens where I essentially lived on bagels and quark, and this was the only shop in town that carried it. In addition to their food selection, they also have a small section of quirky German- and Scandanavian-related gift items, so if you're looking for, say, a button that says "A grumpy German is a sour Kraut," this is the place to get it. read more

I grew up in the mission/Overland Park area. We have been going to Werner's as long as I can remember. This is the only place I will get andouille sausage. A while ago I was watching food network and Werner's actually got a mention on how good their sausages are. Not only do they have sausage and other meats but they also have foods from England and Germany and Switzerland. It's one of the only places I can find some cookies that I like from England. They also have different sauces and spreads from Europe. The owners are very sweet and are more than happy to help you find whatever you'd like. With Werner's, most people never make it past the grill outside on Saturdays, which is understandable. Certainly that was the way it was with me, despite growing up in Mission, for a long time. Eventually, though, I ventured in, and was pleasantly surprised. FIrst of all, their grilled sausages: outstanding. I can't say which one I love the best. The knackwurst is probably my least favorite--it's good, don't get me wrong, but they have better. It pains me to say because I used to teach in the Old Northeast (for those of you not from KC, it's an area east of Downtown that used to be the old Italian neighborhood), but I like their Italian sausage better than Scimeca's. (Please don't hate me, KC Italians...) The andouille is not completely authentic andouille, but it is excellent as well. I've only seen them grill chorizo once or twice, but if they are grilling it, order it, trust me. And, of course, their brats and cheese brats are excellent, but, you know, given that it's a German grocery store, they'd better be. Venturing inside, I've also come across their freezer case where they sell more limited-batch sausages--English bangers, Swedish potato sausages, Lithuanian somethingorothers... (Argh! Can't remember their name!) I had the Lithuanian whatevers, which are like potato sausages but with onion instead of potato. Very nice. Not as spicy as I like sausage, but very flavorful. I've used their uncooked andouille for shrimp and grits, and it came out beautifully, but just a word of caution, you definitely need to adjust the amount of cayenne you add if you use it.
