Visiting from California I was surprised and excited to see a restaurant much like where I eat daily. They have several options even if you aren't vegan or gluten free. I had the toast with avocado and salmon and the kick ass coffee. It was great! I think this is much needed in Central NY and happy to see more variety than pasta and pizza to eat. I've never had a successful experience ordering for pickup here. Food is great, but food is never done on time. Staff is evasive and doesn't offer any updates when this happens. Staff is consistently unfriendly in general - even when asking for things like the bathroom code they act annoyed. When Original Grain came to Syracuse I was so excited. This city is missing healthier casual food restaurants. Original Grain, you did. It disappoint. Everything I have had their is fresh, super healthy food. They also do an excellent job of making everything look beautiful! My go to dish would have to be the Mexi-cali gain bowl. That carrot ginger dressing is to die for!! The staff is always friendly and willing to help you out with what some of heir favorite dishes are. Original Grain is the new spot to eat real, whole food in a hip, urban setting. The new restaurant in the heart of downtown Syracuse is the perfect place for a health conscious customer to check out! I definitely did not expect to find such a trendy dining experience in Armory Square, but I was pleasantly surprised as soon as I walked in. The vibe is super cool and definitely encompasses the "Cali vibes. NY Fresh" brand they are going for. The menu offers a range of healthy options including: acai bowls, toasts, smoothies, salads, grain bowls, noodle bowls and nori wraps. I was craving something savory so I asked the cashier for some help ordering. He was willing to recommend several options, showing great customer service. With his help I landed on the "Egg Man" toast--prosciutto, smashed avocado, egg, chia seeds, microgreens and ponzu dressing on multigrain toast. I absolutely loved the color and taste of the dish, but I was disappointed by the size and wish there were two pieces instead of one. In my opinion, $7.00 for one piece of avocado toast is a little steep. Although they love to play loud music, they need to turn it down a few notches. Overall, I give Original Grain a 4/5 on the scale because the food was great, but definitely overpriced. The only complain I have is that they missed the boat when it comes to environmental concerns. Their dressings are especially good I think Hip & Instagrammable atmosphere (if that's important to you) Cons: Pricey. Expect to pay around $15 for a salad or grain bowl Staff is more concerned with looking cool than customer service. On several occasions I have waited for too long at the counter for someone to help me. I've also had a cashier take several phone orders right in front of me rather than ringing me up or leave me in the middle of my transaction without a word. They always seem like they are working multiple stations at once so they are overwhelmed The counter ordering system is a mess. Other reviewers have mentioned this. Their music is so loud and sometimes vulgar, which is a turn off for me. If I had kids I probably wouldn't be happy about it either Their bowls are packed to the brim, which sounds like a pro, but makes them messy and hard to eat. You don't have room to mix the ingredients so the bottom ends up being plain lettuce or grains once you eat through the toppings. If they got bigger bowls but gave the same amount of food it would make everything so much easier to eat. My new favorite place to eat. They have healthy choices that are interesting and tasty! A lot of complaints on here about how the ordering line is set up, but it is really not that confusing. They have different sections for each type of food, (sandwiches, smoothies, bowls, noodles, etc.) Even if I am standing at a section waiting to order I never wait long. Every staff member I have encountered is very friendly and I get my food quickly since I usually get it on the go. The food is amazing, like nothing else you will find in the Syracuse area. The entire idea of this restaurant is very creative. I would not recommend to picky eaters though, you have to be willing to try something new and healthy. read more

Customer service is terrible and the guy who owns this place likes to stand around and stare at customers who have been waiting minutes for someone to take their order, but not help them. Leaves a very bad taste in your mouth, even if the avocado toast is good. Service after placing your order takes a long time, and sometimes they clearly forget your order and fulfill orders inexplicably in reverse. Also I personally am not a fan of brown meat in my chicken bowl when it costs so much money. This place forgets it's in Syracuse and not in a good way. We went here for brunch on a Sunday morning. The food was good but I was disappointed they didn't have a specific brunch menu; they had a small menu that was posted at the register but hard to see that had a couple of brunch specials. My boyfriend ended up getting one of those specials- a croissant with bacon, avocado, kimchi, a spicy sauce and egg. He really liked it. I got the Egg Man which was okay, a little too much prosciutto in my opinion- and the toast with Reese's Puffs which was really good. Overall, the food was good and they had an expansive and unique menu- it's tough to find a good grain bowl around! But the tables were really sticky and we watched multiple people finish eating and leave while we were there, and the tables were never cleaned. So I felt really gross while eating, and we checked multiple tables looking for a not sticky place to sit, and couldn't find one. So that was gross. The music was also really loud and uncensored, so as a parent I can imagine wanting to stay away. The wait time was pretty long to sit at a sticky table and wait for our food, so I would come back for takeout maybe. I would call ahead for takeout because they took so long to make the food, we didn't even get our coffees for like 20 minutes. In the past I have had mixed reviews on the customer service...they can be crowded, busy and slow. But I happened in here yesterday for my chia seed pudding fix and witnessed something that makes them 5 star. I walked in after a disheveled, likely homeless man that watched get kicked out of the restaurant next door. He was in search of a coffee and had money to pay for it. The staff at OG treated him with respect, answering his questions, making sure he knew where everything was etc, even engaging him with conversation about the weather. Besides the amazing alternative rock playlist (shoutouts to the curator) the restaurant itself had everything for the health nut and food connoisseur. The CBR sandwich was really good! It was a large size too so I'd say it's almost worth the money in that regard. My antioxidant smoothie, on the other hand, was not great. I really want to like this place but they keep disappointing. Initially it's unclear where to order drinks v. food. The signage is confusing, plus, no one greets you. Prices are rather steep; I can typically live with this but then the food should be excellent every time and the overall experience should justify the price. I have gone 3 times now to give them the benefit of the doubt and while the food can be okay the customer service is awful! They are rude, they are slow. I once waited close to 10 minutes at the drink counter before anyone took my order; I was the only one in line. A gentleman who appeared to be a manager who was sitting in the customer section finally got up to take my order. It was awkward and he never acknowledged my wait. Instead he commented about how tired he was. I appreciate what they are trying to do here with the fresh food fusion menu, the laid back style, the hip decor but they need some guidance on restaurant logistics and etiquette. My husband and I went into Original Grain on a Sunday, and it was very busy. Apparently also understaffed. The smoothie line was super long and not moving. We waited for 15 minutes and made no progress, so although I really wanted a smoothie, we decided to go into a smaller line, where you order bowls, and we each got a bowl, and each grabbed a bottled drink. We realized that there was also a line where you could order sandwiches, and it hit me that their ordering process it really stupid. It should be like any other fast food place - Panera, Strong Hearts, or even Subway, where you order everything you want from one line, and then the various items are made while you wait. So on Sunday, we would have had wait in line to order smoothies, then go wait in line for bowls, then go wait in another line for sandwiches. THAT MAKES NO SENSE. You don't go to Dunkin' Donuts and stand in one line for a coffee, then another line for a muffin, and then yet another line for a breakfast sandwich! And what if you want coffee, and the coffee line is really long? Ya don't get a coffee.... just a muffin? The food was OK... I had a "Hail, MF Kale" bowl and my husband had the "Mexi-Cali." He said his was good, but I tasted it and it tasted like anything from Chipotle. My bowl had a little kale in it, and a pound of edamames. Another issue was the seating. Granted, the place was mobbed at that point, but the Salina Street Syracuse location is underprepared for a crowd either behind the counter or in the dining area. Every single spot was taken, and people were hovering menacingly with their food trays, and then pouncing on anyone who even sort of looked like they were going to make a move toward getting up. We ended up sitting on these little stools over by the garbage cans that were made out of milk crates with a wooden top to sit on... I tried to convince my husband to go back to the car to eat, but he didn't want to. So that was fun. I probably won't return, but my husband wants me to give it another chance sometime when it won't be mobbed. But since we live about 20 miles away, I probably won't unless we're in Syracuse for some other reason... no special trips just for Original Grain. read more
