I brought in my first "grown up" piece of art - a 1940-50s oil paint on paper modernist abstract painting by Bay Area painter Calvin Anderson - the piece held a lot of meaning to me because it was my first foray into the medium, but I no idea what to do with it--or how to preserve the piece itself. Micah did. What I walked out with was perfection. The frame and woodwork is so stunning, but doesn't overpower the abstract piece itself. Another piece was an AP from a graffiti artist's UFO, which was a departure from my usual style but incredibly intriguing. Micah knew I was hesitant about how to bring that piece to life while also not feel foreign to me or my personal style. He blended my style with a subtle, yet super interesting mounting and frame material. I walk by it every day and don't see a piece I wouldnt normally own, I walk by it and love it because while it is still art that I normally wouldn't own--I can't imagine my home without. Lastly, an archive print of a very sentimental black and white photo of The Beastie Boys from a 90s Spin Magazine cover shoot brought me to tears when revealed in their studio. Good tears - ha. I have used a number of framing folks before, and when I went to go re-visit one of them (who has since closed for business) was pointed to Micah and the folks at Orion. Got the same recommendation from a number of fine art friends, so glad I listened to their recommendation. I brought in some incredibly cool large photographic prints and got excellent collaboration in finding a good frame, selecting a good matting color and width, and communicative during the framing process. I was thankfully not in a rush, so asked them to take their time. The price was above what I had hoped for, but when I received my final product, totally understood the value provided. I came here to get one piece of artwork fixed - which was a floating glass frame (40x60). The art had fallen off of the floating frame and I was in dire need of a good framer. I'm a San Francisco-based photographer. I got a large piece (40x40 inches) accepted in a show at a gallery in Palo Alto. The photo was printed and mounted, but not yet framed. Orion is a very special place. When I read that they provide customized framing services, I decided to ask what could be done to help determine the provenance of a painting. To view the back of the canvas meant separating the oil painting from the frame to which it was nailed. Micah said he could do the work right then without harming the painting. He removed the many nails so I could see the back of the canvas, then, after checking with me, went above and beyond by substituting screws for the nails when putting it back together. That way the frame could be more easily removed in the future. Everything looked as it had when I brought the painting in, only cleaner and more safely wrapped. I am in awe of his skill and feel very lucky that I stumbled into such an exceptional framing shop. read more

I chose Orion because the shop was in my neighborhood but quickly realized Micah and his team were the right people for the job. I had an idea for the arrangement of the first three rows, but Micah helped concept the bottom and did a fantastic job mounting them in a shadowbox.
