I was pretty surprised by how steep the pricing was, though I'm glad the proceeds go back to the community in some form (6 oysters for $20). I was a bit disappointed by the quality of some of the oysters we got for that pricing, as there were some that were pretty small, flat and not as high quality. The other seafood options were good, and I really enjoyed a fried coconut shrimp kebab that was $25. Overall, it's a nice festival vibe and well managed, just pricey and some of the food quality around the star oyster was not quite up to expectations! Yet the county has a rich history in farming and agriculture from the late 1600s up into the 1970s. The small farms in north Jersey do more than just provide fruits and vegetables for our tables. They are open-air classrooms to our agricultural past, places to buy fresh produce and baked goods to support local family farm stores, and places for interesting special events and outings for families. Being the first Saturday after Labor Day, my partner and I got a head start on the apple cider donuts made fresh daily, just oozing with apple cidery goodness and never hot. Since 1973, located on Airmont Avenue in Mahwah, Secor Farms is a reminder of Bergen County's rural past and one of the last farms left in the area, passed down through three generations. Upon arrival in the afternoon, parking was not an issue with only a handful of vehicles. However, the farm comes alive starting Sept 15 with a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin picking, and a petting zoo where reservations are required, with all sorts of activities. Their outside garden centers had pumpkins, gourds, fall decorations, and mums for purchase. We went inside their marketplace full of produce and managed to get a bag of mixed apple cider donuts and a quart of apple cider. These baked donuts have the sweet tartness of apple cider with a coating of cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. They were soft, moist, tender, and tastefully delicious. The price was reasonable. The staff was friendly. We can recommend this place.

The days it is open a wonderful farmer's market operates inside. Everyone who works here is wonderful and explains the CSA they offer, as well as what is available to those who want to shop here and there. All of their fruits and veggies looked delicious and fresh! I ended up buying some potatoes and carrots. They seemed to be a busy place for their CSA members and while I cannot afford that membership right now, it is something I will absolutely keep in mind for the future. Prices are fair, you can walk the fields, if you have the CSA you can pick your own berries. A wonderful spot if you want fresh produce and want to know exactly where it's coming from.

Shame on our Nassau county legislators for holding up their contract. Farming is a challenge here due to weather, blight, bugs - yet through it all Caroline and Dan have been able to provide for all of us who want better than what we are being offered in the supermarkets. They certainly don't do it for the money. If anyone is free on a Saturday go check out the tin house, tour the farm, enjoy the beauty that they have created (just in case the worst thing happens and Nassau county lets this farm go fallow).
