Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha was founded in 1926 by Asher Peter and a group of local civic…read moreleaders during Florida's land boom years. The cemetery was designed as an inclusive, non-denominational resting place, reflecting Gotha's origins as a community settled by German freethinkers who valued independence and intellectual openness. Nearly a century later, Woodlawn continues to serve the community through traditions such as Easter sunrise services and programs like the Homeless Veterans Burial Program. In 1976, Woodlawn became the first cemetery in Florida to establish an on site funeral home. Over the decades, it has grown into a majestic memorial park and one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever visited. The landscaped, park like grounds feature gardens, fountains, a peaceful lake, and striking works of memorial art. One of the cemetery's most impressive features is its mausoleum, adorned with a breathtaking Life of Christ mosaic made from 11 million pieces of glass crafted in Italy. Woodlawn is also home to a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell, commissioned from France's Paccard Bell Foundry in 1972 in preparation for the nation's Bicentennial. It is one of only four Liberty Bell replicas in Florida. In 2008, the cemetery expanded with the opening of Arbor Estates, which offers a more natural setting with waterfalls and streams for both traditional and cremation burials. Woodlawn may be most famous for being the final resting place of PBS painter Bob Ross, who died on July 4, 1995. Several other notable figures buried here include Dave "Lonesome Dave" Peverett, lead singer and founding member of the rock band Foghat; Major League Baseball pitcher Tim Crews; All-Star pitcher Mike Cuellar; and T. Vincent Quinn, a former U.S. Representative from New York. During my visit to Woodlawn, I discovered much more than the graves and monuments. There was nature, art, history, architecture, and some unique memorials. This cemetery is more than just a final resting place, it has become a destination in its own right, drawing visitors who come to discover the stories, people, and history of Central Florida.

This is not an easy thing to do and Gabriel and Loomis gave us the best possible experience. ( I recently lost a brother in another state, and how we were treated by Loomis was far above what we experienced in Pennsylvania.). it is a comfort knowing that such a caring business is here to help persons at one of the most difficult times of their lives.

The social worker gave me a list of funeral service vendors in that area. I called around and the prices and approaches were all over the place. A high quote with a discount for being in hospice? Ugh. I looked on Yelp and saw a recommendation by a friend that she thought Loomis was a professional and thoughtful organization. I could not have asked for better service and fee prices. - They were helpful and explained their fee and costs for death certificates over the phone. When my husband later died in the middle of the night, they responded quickly - Cremation fees were much less than those quoted by others on the list furnished by hospice. - They did not try to up sell, they even suggested I might want to complete the request via the web and conveniently pay at the same time if I did not feel like driving over there. - I am having a funeral service in another state. They were so kind and respectful on the phone and in person. - They provided the paperwork and documents I will need to have my husband interred in another state. - They had a catalog of urns and the prices were very reasonable and I know this as I had shopped around. Their location in Apopka seems small but most of the staff I spoke to were young and caring. In a time when I was stressed this was the easiest decision.
