Not sure what the bad reviews are about. I have used them twice to remove trees from my yard. First in the front, then backyard. Both times they came out next day. Really good prices(I have price shopped). Super respectful, quick, and polite guys. They even took down a small tree that was an afterthought for me at no extra charge. There were 2 ongoing issues in my front yard. A leaking sprinkler system,whenever I watered even for short periods the lawn became soaked and an overgrown big tree. I came across Ortega Tree Service on yelp. With the many favorable reviews I gave them a call. After an on site estimate and a good reasonable price we agreed upon date and time for the work to be done. When the job was finished I could not be happier. It was done right! The problem leak is fixed with a new cutoff valve and rerouted PVC now it works like new that overgrown tree is trimmed and looks great. Its nice the lawn is not constantly soaked with watered wasted.I will definitely reach out to them for any other issues that I might have with trees or sprinklers. You can tell it's a family business because when I called they answered "hello" (I believe it's their home number, so don't let that throw you off). They came out the same day for a free estimate and were able to do the work two days later. We had them come out and trim bushes, pull weeds, and do a general yard clean-up. They spent a lot of time, were very thorough, and it was very fairly priced. The yard looks great! I'd definitely recommend them. read more

Our palm trees were just trimmed by Jorge from Ortega. This man is a pro and did an amazing job on all 4 trees. If you want a beautiful tree where the tree old bark is trimmed correctly and the clean look from a tree perfectionist hire Ortega. The other tree services I've used just cut the dead branches and seed pods and are in and out as fast as they can. They also use your recycle container and stack the cut branches on their truck. Very little cleanup in your yard it's the norm. Ortega carefully trims the trees taking time to do it right, they send another man or 2 to do ongoing cleanup and their truck has a branch shredder so they don't need your recycle can. After they do a final cleanup and when they leave your yard is as it was front the start and your palms are perfect. I found their rates to be in line with the others I have used and felt it was worth every cent. You won't be disappointed. read more

They just left our yard which looked like a jungle before they came. I called yesterday to get an estimate and got one that same afternoon! +1 star!! My parents are going on vacation so i asked them to do a one time clean up as soon as they can... and they came THE NEXT DAY! +1 star! A group of Ortega's men came around 7:30am and didn't finish until 6pm? So why did they take so long? No one cleaned up or touch the garden for ONE WHOLE YEAR at my house. Previously only the front lawn was taken care of. So they: unrooted ALL the weeds I have around 10 palm look-a-like trees they they clean, cut and sweat over. shaped 4/5 over ten feet tall trees shaped all the bushes trimmed all the crazy looking leaves on the walls. in the end, they hauled away ALL THE GARDEN WASTE. EVERYTHING!!+ 5million stars if i could. it would a really tiring job, but they really took their time and finished everything to the very last detail. I feel bad my parents are poor tippers:/ so i'm kind of making it up by giving them a review they deserve. oh yea, also asked them to come do our bi-weekly lawn service. read more

Called them last Friday to come out for a quote, they said they would be there Saturday at noon, never showed up, never called back.

We had Ortega Tree Service remove 3 Palms in our back yard and they did a good job. 4 months later we used them to remove one Palm tree in our front yard.... And it turned into a nightmare! They cut the tree and let the entire tree fall across our lawn. They broke the water line and tried fixing it and NEVER told us. When I got home that night and tried to make dinner I had very little water pressure and gritty dirt/mud was coming out of my faucet. I had to call them and ask what happened to our water! They made it like it was no big deal.... "We broke the water line, but we fixed it." A phone call when they broke the line would have been nice, so a plumber could have fixed it from the beginning! In the end we had to have both JCSD and a plumber come fix everything! JCSD had to replace everything within the water meter box because it was broken. The plumber said Ortega Tree Service caused more damage trying to fix the line because they didn't know what they were doing! When they replaced the water line dirt and rocks that got into the line and ruined the water pressure regulator and valve. Their error and oversight ended up leaving us without water for 2 days and cost us almost $500 in parts and repairs! Now Ortega Tree Service isn't returning our calls! Save yourself the headache.... Use another tree service! read more

DON'T BOTHER CALLING FOR A QUOTE Just like several of the other reviewers, they were a no-show. I guess the landscaping industry must be booming. Here's how it went: -I called to setup my free estimate (phone was answered with just a "hello". I think it's their home phone). I scheduled an appt for Saturday at 10am and supplied all my info. -Saturday, before 9am they called to confirm appt, unfortunately waking up everyone including my 4 month old. -10am and no one showed. At 10:30am I called both their land line (owner's brother answered and had no idea where his brother was) AND left a message on the owner's cell phone. -11am we had things to do and left. Got a text from the owner at noon asking if he could come to our house at 12:30. I told him no and haven't heard back since. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME read more

Just found out that he charged my Grandmother $1800 to have the plants in our front/backyard trimmed and also have some woodchips put in. I looked up the price he charged us last year and it only $350. This is an obvious case of elder abuse and I couldn't be more furious. read more

I called about 10 different tree services. They were the only one that answered. The others called back 4 hours or more later. They got the job because they were on the ball. They were able to give me a quote from pictures I sent as a text message. They stuck to the price they quoted. They did a good job of cleaning up. They were polite and professional. They were careful about cutting the trees and keeping the dropped branches from breaking anything or landing in the neighbor's yard. read more

Plus, he hung up on me when I was trying to ask him if he had my address. If he didn't want my business then he just could have told me so. We've had the Ortega's do irrigation work in the past, backyard sprinkler system. Quote was reasonable and the installation works. Unfortunately it was installed very shallow and we sporadically hit shallow pipes when digging to place plants in the planter areas. Very humble and nice to work with on this project. Figured I should have been more specific on depth of pipe. Fast forward to 2014... finally working on the front yard landscaping. Current status was: no irrigation, dead grass, and weeds everywhere. First step: take out weeds and roto-till. Easy enough job, we figured we couldn't go wrong with the Ortega's, we might even have them do the irrigation again with some additional direction and oversight. We received an estimate comparable to others and figured we'd proceed with them. I thought was very clear in defining the scope: take out an old brick planter, the bad grass/weeds, and roto-till. Unfortunately all they did was take out the planter and roto-till. 10 days later and the weeds are clearly sprouting out from under the roto-tilled soil. I called Mr. Ortega and he said that's how the work is done and that we'd need to use Round-up to kill things off. I said that it was not what was discussed or expected and he said I should rely on someone else for future work. Final thoughts: The Ortega's come across as humble and nice, but require oversight to ensure they perform work correctly. Good luck if you use them without oversight. read more
