I remember Dr. Ken Shimizu saying he graduated from UC Berkeley as an engineering major but switched to orthodontics. During high school, every student from Fremont, Homestead, Wilcox, and Santa Clara high schools came to Dr. Tacy and Shimizu as it was the only reputable orthodontics practice. You could see every students' before and after Polaroid pictures in their albums in the lobby. My classmate from elementary school, Pamela K., worked the front desk for years. In 1997, my bottom retainer snapped and broke, and Dr. Ken Shimizu told me to stop wearing my retainers. He didn't make a new bottom retainer for me because he said I didn't need it. Wrong! I had to get braces a third time on only my bottom teeth last year because during your 30s, 40s, and 50s, your bottom teeth will shift. My top teeth looked great because I wore the same metal retainer since 1990. My youngest brother was given the same wrong advice by Dr. Ken Shimizu during the aughts, and his bottom teeth also shifted. He had to get orthodontics a second time four years ago. Because my youngest brother and I weren't happy with the bad advice from Dr. Ken Shimizu, I got braces from an orthodontist in Texas while my youngest brother got invisalign from another orthodontist in the Bay Area. Don't listen to Dr. Ken Shimizu when he tells you to stop wearing your retainer! It's bad advice and you'll end up spending a lot of money again!

Long overdue review for our favorite orthodontist office!…read more We've been going to Dr. Shimizu for many years, starting with our daughter (now in college) and next with her younger brother. We started with Dr. Ken who is amazing - love talking to him as it's like chatting with your favorite uncle! Then when his son Dr. Kevin joined the practice, we were a little nervous but those fears were quickly put to rest as Dr. Kevin is equally skillful and easy to talk with! The practice is very modern and clean, and the entire office staff is top notch, so friendly and genuinely nice and helpful. They also have lots of goodies to make it fun to come to the office, from treats like ice cream in the summer for the kids, or the coffee bar for adults, and of course a visit to the annual free summer picnic at Saratoga Springs! They also have occasional drawings like the bike drawing, where you earn raffle tickets for having clean teeth! We did Invisalign with our daughter and traditional braces with our son and both were great. Highly recommend! We've referred a number of friends here as well!

At our old dental office, only morning appointments were available and it was super inconvenient for working parents. Neither of my children has had a cavity ever in their life but they performed x-rays mid year for my son that were not covered by insurance and we would have opted out. His dad had declined this in the past when it was outside of coverage yet they did not disclose this time. Most commonly insurance covers X-rays one time per year, anything this basic that is clearly out of coverage should be clearly stated to the patient at the time. It's an x-ray grift on working families and they lost two patients for $105. Beware about the unnecessary X-rays every visit if u decide to use these scammers make sure you are informed of your coverage they will not tell you.

TWO start for "Could've been better" because it used to be better :( Luxe dental was the best choice 7 years ago with Delta in-network coverage. Dr. I was very attentive and willing to explain all the details before, during and after the procedure. He also proactively helps me to arrange visits properly to save some money with insurance. Excellent experience overall. A few years ago, Luxe dental left Delta Dental which causes some inconveniences but I was convinced that the out-of-pocket payments are not increased. And I decide to stay with Luxe dental for the good services from Dr. I Last year, Dr.I recommended a whitening procedure to me and explained the cost with insurance extensively. Everything works as expected and I am very impressed. This year, I was silently switched to another doctor (not Lans I or Sandy Huang), who performs fine services but without all the "extras" from Dr. I. AND TODAY, I was surprised by the 700+ bill as all my $2000 allowance are used. After some investigation, I found out that Delta has 500 less allowance for out of network providers($2500 vs $2000). The process of root canal+crown would easily drain the yearly allowance for many insurance plans and I was told nothing before seeing the bill. This should be the responsibility of the office stuff but I think Dr.I may also warns me about the issue. Anyway, it is still my fault to not plan everything properly and it is also my issue to trust Luxe dental after many years of good experiences. It is still a convenient place for routine services but please be cautious about everything else.
