I started out with Dr. Walters and Dr. Tacy in 1983. Dr. Walters was bought out by Dr. Ken Shimizu. I had to get braces a second time during eleventh grade because I had lockjaw. I remember Dr. Ken Shimizu saying he graduated from UC Berkeley as an engineering major but switched to orthodontics. During high school, every student from Fremont, Homestead, Wilcox, and Santa Clara high schools came to Dr. Tacy and Shimizu as it was the only reputable orthodontics practice. You could see every students' before and after Polaroid pictures in their albums in the lobby. My classmate from elementary school, Pamela K., worked the front desk for years. In 1997, my bottom retainer snapped and broke, and Dr. Ken Shimizu told me to stop wearing my retainers. He didn't make a new bottom retainer for me because he said I didn't need it. Wrong! I had to get braces a third time on only my bottom teeth last year because during your 30s, 40s, and 50s, your bottom teeth will shift. My top teeth looked great because I wore the same metal retainer since 1990. My youngest brother was given the same wrong advice by Dr. Ken Shimizu during the aughts, and his bottom teeth also shifted. He had to get orthodontics a second time four years ago. Because my youngest brother and I weren't happy with the bad advice from Dr. Ken Shimizu, I got braces from an orthodontist in Texas while my youngest brother got invisalign from another orthodontist in the Bay Area. Don't listen to Dr. Ken Shimizu when he tells you to stop wearing your retainer! It's bad advice and you'll end up spending a lot of money again! read more

Long overdue review for our favorite orthodontist office! We've been going to Dr. Shimizu for many years, starting with our daughter (now in college) and next with her younger brother. We started with Dr. Ken who is amazing - love talking to him as it's like chatting with your favorite uncle! Then when his son Dr. Kevin joined the practice, we were a little nervous but those fears were quickly put to rest as Dr. Kevin is equally skillful and easy to talk with! The practice is very modern and clean, and the entire office staff is top notch, so friendly and genuinely nice and helpful. They also have lots of goodies to make it fun to come to the office, from treats like ice cream in the summer for the kids, or the coffee bar for adults, and of course a visit to the annual free summer picnic at Saratoga Springs! They also have occasional drawings like the bike drawing, where you earn raffle tickets for having clean teeth! We did Invisalign with our daughter and traditional braces with our son and both were great. Highly recommend! We've referred a number of friends here as well! read more

I've been a patient at Shimizu Orthodontics for about a year, using their Invisalign service. For the first nine months, I was diligent about wearing my aligners for the full 22 hours a day, and by that point my teeth were already about 99% corrected. Over the final three months, I'll admit I wasn't as consistent - mostly nights only - but the end result was still fantastic. Both my top and bottom teeth are beautifully aligned, and I​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ couldn't be happier. I just finished my treatment at Shimizu and I'm so impressed. The office operations is streamlined and efficient. I had a consultation at another orthodontist and they had estimated that my treatment would take 2 years of invisialign or 1 year of regular braces. I finished Invisalign treatment at Shimizu within 2.5 months as estimated by Dr. Shimizu. Not only that, they worked w my insurance to make sure I had the best coverage (the other ortho quoted me for 5x the cost and said my insurance wouldn't cover it). For some context, my case was considered a "touch up" since I had braces before as a child (I had stopped wearing retainers about 10 years ago and my bottom teeth shifted). read more

Dr. Shimizu is attentive, gentle, meticulous, patient and friendly. I know because my friend is an oral surgeon in the area and he won't name the bad ones but told me that we'd be in good hands here. I cannot say how happy I am after visiting Dr. Shimizu last Friday. For the first time I felt the Dr. was telling me the truth and not trying to dip his hand into my Bank Acct! (He actually said...if you have nothing better to do, than I will take your money) his like Yoda!!!! So sweet, humble and knowledgeable!!! So I went in for an Invisalign consult - a sweet lady takes some pics of my teeth with a digital camera, asks me some questions, and then calls in the Doc. The Doc reviewed everything and told me...."are you sure you really want to go through this again. Its not necessary you can just go the following , etc....." All I ended up needing was a retainer and I was happy the Doc gave me a "clear pic," rather than trying to tell me he'll do some magic and correct my lil problems. THANKS Doc your awesome!!! Dr. Shimizu is the best orthodontist! Along with his team of wonderful assistants my teeth 12 YEARS later are still perfect! As a 9 year old back in 2002 I was not thinking of braces at all. But I had no choice as my parents dragged me to get them put on. I had pretty messed up teeth because my baby teeth never voluntarily fell out; I had to get one surgically removed & as a result I had crowding and then crooked teeth. I had braces for 9 months to help with the overcrowding & then in 9th grade I would get braces again. In 9th grade as a freshman in high school I was like oh goodness no, so embarrassing! But I'd rather get it over with as soon as possible. 9 months later I had perfect beautiful teeth! Only 18 months total of braces & my teeth are exactly the way I want them to be! I see so many people get braces and then NOT wear their retainers because they are "not cool" or they are "ugly & inconvenient". But honestly, in today's society, having straight white teeth is important when making friends, getting a job, & looking presentable. Having braces is not too fun but at a young age I'd recommend it. Braces are a very good investment; but only if you choose to wear that $300 retainer EVERYDAY! I'm glad I chose (glad my parents chose) Dr. Shimizu as my orthodontist. read more
