We've had delicious lunches here at Osaki until just recently. I had the miso soup, but it had no miso ingredients. This is a soup I make at home. Kombu was not used to make the dashi broth. Bonito flakes were not used to infuse more flavor. No red and white miso paste. No tofu cubes. A miserly portion of scallions. They offered seaweed, but I'm not a fan and declined. I was unable to identify the base of the soup they served but it had no resemblance in any way to miso. Please folks, the recipe is so simple. All above ingredients are available on Amazon. You appear to have nori and fresh fish, so why not the other things? Food Network's Alton Brown has a decent recipe. Please look at it and make this an honest Japanese restaurant. BTW, French Onion and Miso Soups as you all may know, do not work well together, especially when one of them isn't miso. read more

Sat down right away but waited forever to get a server at our table. Only one server who ran around doing everything. She did wait on to go orders before actual clientele in the restaurant. Which I think is strange. I am ordered a sashimi bento box. It included a salad and miso soup. All fresh and delicious. Husband ordered a sashimi dinner which came with soup or salad. All fresh fish. Soooo good. I was not expecting this quality in the middle of nowhere Kansas. My expectations were pretty low going in, but I was SO mistaken. The Kani salad was delicious, and it had a good amount of grab to spinach. We tried several rolls, they were all tasty and well out together, I am always happy when I actually get some fillings to go with all that sushi rice. For a small town like Hays, Kansas, I am rather surprised that there is an excellent sushi place. I've done here a few times. Overall, and quite pleased to the menu and the selections. Went here yesterday for the first time for lunch. It was one of the few options open on Christmas. Since we were in the middle of Kansas I did not want to trust having any raw fish dishes. Opted for the Super Crunch Roll which has crab and shrimp. Not sure what is in their sauce but it was really tasty. It comes wrapped in a pink soy wrapper rather that seaweed which was great! Husband had shrimp udon - the udon noodles were really overcooked and mushy. The restaurant itself is unimpressive from the outside, old building. Inside the decor is not very exciting either. It is rather plain and everything looks old. They have an extensive menu but don't clean them apparently as the pages were stuck together which always makes me wonder about overall cleanliness. Table had old greasy fingerprints. As another reviewer said, the waitress was nice, but she seemed to be just one person doing everything so it was rather slow. read more

Food is decent not the freshest. Service is not great 2/10. Had to wait 20 minutes for an appetizer and 30 Minutes for the main course just to find out it was sushi instead of the sashimi I ordered. The roll was just ok, rice tasted old. Unfortunately won't be coming back to this place. read more

The guy making the sushi was a better waiter than our actual waitress. Went without drinks in the somewhat uncomfortably warm restaurant for a very long time. In fact it took a while for our waitress to even come ask for our drinks after we arrived. Terrible service the whole night and they weren't even that busy. We could hear other tables complaining, too. Food was okay but not excellent and on top of the terrible service it just wasn't worth it. I was pleasantly surprised by this new restaurant. I am a loyal Sake2me fan, but I decided to give this place a shot. I'm still a sake2me customer, but I will definitely be coming back on occasion. I ate here one time because I didn't want to wait a half hour for Sake2Me to open for their dinner service. I wish I would have waited or just skipped dinner and kept on driving. I ordered their special that was on the board which said it was topped with snow crab and I think it had salmon or tuna on the inside. It was a $14 roll so I was very surprised that after my almost half hour wait for my one roll, it came out topped with sheets of imitation crab. I was utterly disappointed. I asked the server about it and she went to go ask the chef. She came back and told me that they were out of snow crab so just used the "next best thing". No, if you are out of the main ingredient your roll is named for, the first course of action would be to have your server inform your customer and ask if they want something else. Especially for the price I paid, the roll was not worth it and was bland. I would have happily ordered another item if I had just been informed that they did not actually have any snow crab. Next time I will definitely just wait for Sake2Me to open. read more

Instead of shrimp pad thi we got chicken and instead of kids shrimp hibachi we got steak and asked for fried rice in our teriyaki chicken and got steam rice. Paid extra for shrimp and fried rice with our meals and were so dissatisfied when we were on the road and realized how messed up our order was. The chicken teriyaki was bland and the pad thi was over cooked. Our daughter didn't even touch her food because it was steak and not shrimp. I would skip this place and head to Rib Crib where they have great food and service. I just wish we could get our money back from this horrible food. read more

Sushi is good, not a wide selection or any of the higher-end cuts, but good. I go there often and haven't been disappointed. Last visit on my birthday was fantastic. Seaweed salad was very good, Kirin was cold, and the sushi was great. I'm not a fan of "sushi rolls" but the Spider Roll & Spicy Hamachi Roll are very tasty. I really wish they would carry some of the 'good stuff' (toro, bluefin, Kobe beef, fatty salmon, etc) but the customers in Hays couldn't afford or appreciate them. We use to love this place but it has gone downhill terribly. The last few times we get our meals 10 minutes before our kids. We would rather our kids get there meal first then us. Our young waitress tonight gave us our drinks and said she'd be back to get our order, we had our menus put at the edge of the table when she brought drinks back, hinting at that we ready. With so many "Japanese" restaurants coming to town, I had to try out this new edition. Pros: It has a really wide menu to choose from with some authentically Japanese items. Cons: The flavor seemed a little bland. For my meal I ordered some gyoza, tamago (egg) nigiri zushi, and the chicken and yakiniku hibachi entree. The gyoza was okay, a little under cooked for my taste. The chicken and yakiniku was bland. I would probably never order it again. The highlights of my meal were the vegetables that came with it and the tamago sushi. I'm not a huge fan of sushi, with only about four types that I like, so I get a little excited when I see reasonably priced tamago nigiri on a menu. Although the presentation was not what I was used to (it was actually rather awesome looking), the flavor was really good. For the meal itself, I probably would only give three stars. However, I barely tried anything from the menu and think that the wide variety available was great. If you have time and money, check the place out and experiment. read more

Osaki sushi rolls are pretty good for a person who is trying sushi for the first time. There isn't a wide selection but enough to satisfy one's needs and be pleased with their food. They have good sushi rolls that are made fresh to your order and you can definitely tell it's fresh when you eat it. Their rolls are very cheap, such as the California roll which is $3, and you get a very good amount of food at high quality. Depending on what type of roll you order, the time it takes for them to make it varies- California rolls take about five minutes to make. Osaki is definitely a good try if you are interested in having an inexpensive meal at a fairly high quality. read more
