Sake2Me Sushi & Seafood Grille was unfortunately a disappointing experience. I'm working in Kansas this weekend and had heard great things about this place, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the Kansas Roll, which sounded promising with the fried panko, but it ended up being very bland and lacked the flavor I expected. I also tried the shrimp stir fry bowl, which was extremely salty to the point that I could only eat a few bites. The shrimp themselves were very small--closer to salad shrimp than what you'd expect in a stir fry. The restaurant was completely packed when I walked in, which usually signals great food, so I was honestly expecting a much better experience. Even with fairly modest expectations, the dishes I ordered just didn't deliver. The one bright spot was the customer service--Holly at the register was very friendly and welcoming. My mother and I had heard some good things about this place from several people, but we were a bit skeptical about sushi this far west. Good lord, I've never been so disappointed and right at the same time! The server told us to sit ourselves, and we decided to choose a table. The table was disgusting and not clean. Several gnats were flying around the restaurant, one particularly interested in our table. My mother's water tasted disgusting, and my hot green tea was subpar at best because it was made with the same water, so you could still taste it. The food was awful. I got the spicy crab bowl, which was obviously an imitation and somehow had no flavor. I don't know how you managed that everything basically tasted the same to a point where it was inedible. I took maybe two bites, and then I couldn't stomach anymore without feeling like I was going to vomit. I've had better sushi when buying it from the store, which says something! In the long run, I think many people's perspectives on sushi quality need to be improved. read more

Once seated, service was slow and took forever to get our order in and for our food to arrive. The fried rice was OK. Seemed to be a bit lacking in flavor and spice. I had heard great things about this restaurant and was excited to try it. My daughter and I came here for dinner and left after splitting an appetizer and only 1 bite each of our food. It was bad. The name is a little deceiving as they only have rolls and rolls made into bowls in there, you can get limited sushi, but no salmon, no garlic tuna, no hamachi. The tuna and crab they use is a tuna or crab mix. I am not sure if it's even real crab. It didn't taste like it was. The water in the restaurant tastes bad as well, like it comes from old pipes. Its Sushi. In Kansas. Heck, western Kansas where there is only dirt and wind. I know what you are thinking, but somehow they pull it off. We have eaten here a dozen times, and we are always pleased. They do not cater well to Celiacs. My wife gets a Welcome to the Jungle bowl with no sauces. We bring our own GF soy sauce also. She does a Philly Rolls without issues also. First off their address is NOT at 700 Main St like it says on their website which led to us driving in circles. This must be a new address because the building looks completely different than the one in the pictures, it's not well lit (we passed it twice!) & there is no outdoor seating. As for the food we took a risk & got sushi rolls to go, including ones with fried ingredients that may not travel well. We also got fried pot stickers & I have to say everything traveled really well. The pot stickers were crispy & still somewhat hot, the firecracker roll with the bang bang shrimp on top were lukewarm but it still tasted great. I think the specialty rolls we had, the captain crunch roll & firecracker roll were my favorite and a little easier to eat. The California gold roll & the spicy crab roll were a little messy, not as tight & uniform as the specialty rolls. All in all everything was delicious & hit the spot! read more

My go to stop every time I'm in Hays. From the great staff, delicious beers, sake, and mules to the fantastic house specials it's my favorite place in Hays. We had three house rolls, one being my absolute favorite (The Jackass). I'm always make a point to stop in anytime I'm close MF will continue to do so. We ordered the Bang Bang Shrimp for an appetizer and it was very delicious. I literally had goosebumps all over my body when eating it. Sake2me also really seems to understand the importance of presentation. The Spider-Man roll looked like a work of art. I wanted so badly to give this place a good review because I'd heard good things...but I just can't do that. I ordered two sushi rolls for carry out - the FHSU roll (which was their special) and the Angry Shrimp roll. The FHSU was not good...the tempura shrimp had next to no flavor and if it wasn't for the eel sauce, I probably wouldn't have eaten it. The Angry Shrimp roll WAS NOTHING like the description. It was supposed to have a spicy tuna mixture, avocado and tempura shrimp wrapped in sky wrap and topped with steamed shrimp, fresh jalapeño, and siracha. I've attached a picture to show what I got instead...I did ask them to hold the jalapeños but they changed EVERYTHING about it. There is lettuce inside, an imitation crab mix, and cream cheese! There's also no steamed shrimp and no Siracha...I think that's a mayo sauce of some kind. I'll maybe give this place one more chance simply because my cashier, Bekka, was great. I stopped here on my drive to CO. For sushi in the Midwest the quality and price point is not bad. The sushi roll I got, Ninja Roll, was flavorful along with the mango Moscow mule that I had. I will say that as someone who has eaten fresh sushi in California and Hawaii, growing up in both places, I have a pretty darn good idea of what quality sushi tastes like. A huge downfall is that the rice did not taste seasoned. It just tasted like plain white sticky rice. Normally sushi rice is seasoned with a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar and salt. I got a roll that was a deep fried roll, and when I received it all the inner ingredients were hot, which is not normal for a deep fried roll. A deep fried roll is normally wrapped in a soy paper or light tempura batter and quickly deep fried just enough to make the outside crispy but the inner ingredients are usually still cold. Other than those things, flavor was there and portions were great for the price point. Super friendly staff. I would visit again when passing through. read more

I loved this so much last time, I had to come back. I knew what I wanted to eat, because I had thought about it since I came the first time. I wanted the lobster roll. I ordered the dumplings, they were tasty. The lobster roll was a huge disappointment. I probably should have known better. There's a reason lobster isn't normally deep fried. It turns into a rubbery, inedible hunk of chewy meat. It tasted like lobster, but I just couldn't eat it. It was so rubbery. There was all sorts of shredded crab on top that I had a really hard time finding the rest of the ingredients. The waitresses and sushi chef were super friendly. Would I go back? Yes!!! but I wont order that. I don't think the kitchen did anything wrong, I just think lobster should never be deep fried. Was suggested to me to try while in Hays on business. I was the only one in the restaurant for a while. Good beer selection and friendly service. I had to rate it a two because the sushi was disappointing at best. I ordered my fav spicy tuna roll and the only other roll that didn't seem heavy on tempora or frozen seafood like crab or shrimp. The spicy tuna had a great deal of filler in it, can't recall if it was cucumber or celery but was too much. The rainbow roll was colorful but the salmon was not cut properly and I had a large piece of fat/skin. It also did tasted "fishier" than I'm accustomed to w sushi. I can see how this place appeals to people that may not be familiar with sushi or may be afraid to try something traditional. Hands down, my favorite. Sushi place. EVER!! I started eating sushi about 6 years ago and I'm always either overwhelmed by the menu or disappointed in the quality at other places I've visited. Sake2me is by far the most delicious sushi place I have ever been too. Whenever I come back I have to go here to fill my sushi craving. Each roll is flavorful and presentation is well crafted. We are visiting Hays for a softball tournament and we had the rest of the evening off and wanted a nice dinner. This place had nice reviews so we decided we would give it a try. We walked in and told the hostess the number of people and she sent us to the waiting room. The waiting room was at least 95° and had one fan that did not work at all. We waited for 45 minutes in the smoking hot room and finally got seated. Only for the waitress to tell us that their fryer wasn't working and they couldn't make anything fried. We saw them having a staff meeting 20 minutes before we got seated and anyone with common sense would know that they were talking about their fryers being broken. Could they not have told us when they found out? We waited 45 minutes only to end up leaving and going to a different sushi place that actually had air conditioning. Don't waste your time here. We came in about 10 minutes before 2pm. Half the tables hadn't been cleaned off yet and it looked like a restaurant war zone. We drove off the beaten path to find this place because they had the highest reviews in this small town. Since they close at 2, we elected to just order food to go. The sushi prices were relatively high. $8.5 for a philly roll? A lot of the specialty rolls for over $12. One roll was $20. We're in Hayes Kansas people! It's highly unlikely fresh fish is being helicoptered in. We order the pad Thai and chicken stirfry. I elected not to take a photo because I was afraid it would break my camera on my phone. They both look like they were in a display case from a few days ago. The rice in my stirfry was like a block of plastic. The chicken was breaded and dry. The sauce tasted like it came from a can. Me and my wife swapped plates and I tried the pad Thai. There was so much sauce that it was like a pad Thai soup. I looked at her with compassion because she had pushed half of it down already. We arrived as the first customers for the day. We noticed the floor was dirty with crumbs of food and trash. The soy sauce container on our table had not been wiped down...there was sauce on the sides-pretty easy to notice when their dishware is all WHITE. There was no hot tea or iced tea to drink or Saki (which is bizarre since that's the namesake). They may be waiting for liquor license. Our options were water(no pellegrino or perrier) or Pepsi products. Our waitress couldn't tell us what the eel sauce had in it, the kitchen is closed so we couldn't order appetizers. No soups, either. The kitchen door was filthy, which we saw quite easily from the dining area. It took 42 minutes to get our first plate--mind you, we ate here during our lunch HOUR. The rolls were brought out 1 plate at a time. Some of the things on our plates were missing-they were training a girl. I would suggest not training through lunch time because of customer's time constraints. The sushi itself was good. The decor is very understated and elegant with classic blue walls and a nice amount of stainless and white finishes. Could be very romantic at night if they had candle light on the tables. It's a nice change from all the typical local Hays restaurants. I hope their facility gets cleaner and wait staff takes the time to get educated. Bottom line: There were three of is, we ordered 4 plates, it took 1hour and 15 minutes to be served all of our food, it cost $49 not including the tip. It was a nice ambience, good sushi, but sub-par customer care and an unclean environment. read more
