    Assorted tempura appetizer
    Zeynep K.

At a Glance: Small, cozy spot for some good sushi! The long version: This place is the definition of "nothing too fancy". It's small, clean and has subtle decor. I would go here again, but I wouldn't call it my favourite sushi place. We were close by and it met our needs well. Started off with Yakitori (teriyaki chicken skewers), Harumaki (Japanese Spring Rolls) and an assorted tempura appetizer. Everything was delicious, fresh and well seasoned. No double frying, we were very happy with everything. Our mains were Sushi Diamond and Chirashi Don. Chirashi Don is chef's choice of sashimi. They obliged me and omitted some of my least favourite fish, and for that, I am grateful. Everything was delicious! The mains came with a light miso soup and small simply dressed salad, which were both good. The fish was fresh and I believe that the price was fair. Service was also good, took a bit for them to come and take our orders, but negligible with the quality of the rest of their service. Overall, if you're in Newmarket, sushi at Otaru is a good choice!

Newmarket Roll is almost all rice. Can you see any fish in it?

Craving some sushi I fired up yelp and found a place I had not tried. I phoned to make sure there was no lineup, and was pleased to hear I could get right in. So I went right over. I ordered Sushi Crystal as a sampler off of their large menu. The miso soup was pretty good, a bit more subtle than I prefer, but it all vanished anyway. The salad was simple, just lettuce and dressing. I suppose it takes a lot of skill to slice sushi that thin. I mean so paper thin that I couldn't take a photo because my camera couldn't find a point to focus on. The token "crab stick" was also unusually chewy. I suspect the value of the protein on the plate was about $1. I also ordered the Newmarket Roll, since a sushi combo is never enough. It was about 98% rice and tobiko, with a hint of something non-rice in the middle. I didn't get through half of it. The place is nice and cozy, not divey but not poser either. Just comfortable. Service was good. But I find myself seeing far better value in the packaged sushi at the kiosk at Upper Canada Mall. This place could be great if they amp up the portions to a realistic size. But as it sits I won't try again until someone tells me there is more than a suggestion of fish.

I wanted to try this place since it opened. I ordered the spicy maki set $13.50. (Spicy salmon, spicy tuna and spicy California roll) The taste of the sushi was good. Good ratio of spicy sauce, salmon, and tempura bits. The only downside is the fact that the rolls looked small. It was more like mini rolls than full sized rolls with a decent amount of rice and fish. I guess by getting 8 pieces of each roll, it makes up for the size? The taste of the food is a 4 star but the size is a 3. I really want to give this place higher stars cause the service was lovely and the food tasted good. I just expected more from the sizing of the rolls. Their lunch specials seem like a better deal - 2 rolls for 7.95 but I have a feeling the portions will be even smaller, given the price.

I usually only come here for lunch, since I go for all you can eat sushi for dinner. The service is really good and it's always really peaceful and quiet. I've only had their bento boxes and a few rolls. From what I've had, their bento boxes are pretty standard and aren't very special, but aren't bad at all. One of their rolls, which is in one of the pictures, is very pretty AND tastes amazing. They char the outside of the sushi roll which gives a unique taste to the sushi, which I enjoyed. Some people were complaining about the warm rice, but I got a roll that was supposed to be hot, so I must enjoy sushi with hot rice then. Though, if you're getting takeout on main st, sushi jun is probably the place for you. Otaru Sushi is definitely more for sitting in the restaurant than takeout.

Best sushi spot in Newmarket!! I've been here over 10 times, the food is amazing, service is great and has a great cozy atmosphere. I would totally recommend the Natsu box with short rib (comes with 5 pieces assorted vegetable tempura, 1 piece crab tempura, 1 piece shrimp tempura, 4 pieces california roll, 4 pieces deep fried spring roll).

A steaming pile of shrimp tempura.

It's a small place and I thought it might be good when I saw several Asian customers. The waitress was rather unenthusiastic. The menu was okay, but missing a few items that other AYCE spots I frequent offer (no Dim Sum for example). The food was average at best (and that's stretching it)... The price was higher than most other places... $41 per person was overpriced in my opinion. That evening both my wife and myself were quite sick... Mild cases of food poisoning. My wife much worse than myself. Obviously ill never go back.

Had the AYCE weekend lunch ($30). Amusingly, you have to accept terms of service. There's no…read moredescription for many of the rolls. The cooking is generally decent, though the chicken skewer was dry & the udon soup tasteless. The sushi is above average in that the rice is noticeably warm & there's not too much of it, but it falls apart easily & there's not that much fish either. The meal came with a complimentary beef tataki. The sauce was heavier than usual - a bit fruity & quite acidic. It was pretty good. They have unusual dishes like yam fries, spicy miso soup & potato croquettes. They have one of smallest portions for sesame chicken for AYCE sushis, but definitely the largest sushi pizza portion. Dessert was a mixed bag. The sundae was good with crispy cookie crumbs & chocolate sauce. However the fried banana was below average (too soft, with too much artificial banana flavour) & the ice cream had more ice crystals than average.

You can really tell they take pride in both the quality of the food and the presentation. What made our experience even better was our waitress, Sarah. She was so kind, welcoming, and attentive throughout our meal. She had such a warm personality and made us feel genuinely taken care of. Great customer service like hers makes all the difference. If you're looking for fresh sushi, generous portions, and outstanding service, I highly recommend Nigiriya. We'll definitely be coming back. Thank you, Sarah, for making our visit so enjoyable!

Food 3.5/5 Service 3/5…read moreAmbience 3.5/5 An attractive clean looking restaurant with dine-in and take-out. The restaurant has several menu items for sushi and Korean foods and offers a menu of lunch specials. We ordered: Takoyaki Lunch BBQ salmon Donburi Tonkatsu Curry I enjoyed the Takoyaki. The size of the pieces of octopus was decent. My partner enjoyed the Tonkatsu Curry. The curry sauce came in a separate bowl. The best part of the BBQ Salmon Donburi was the avocado, which they gave a generous serving of avocado. In the Donburi, I thought the sushi rice was underwhelming and bland. The BBQ salmon was over barbecued and sooo dry it could not be saved by the lime aioli and teriyaki sauces. Our friend who ordered the sushi really enjoyed their appetizer. Service: This is the first time I can recall that there is no complimentary green tea offered when dining in at a restaurant offering sushi or Korean food. We asked for water and our friend ordered a beer. At about 15 minutes later, the beer was served. After the food arrived, still no water. We asked for the water again, and four little Chinese tea cups of water (100ml) was served. I don't know if this is standard at this restaurant but it stood out as very unusual in my experience. Plenty of parking right outside the restaurant. The restaurant is at the end of a plaza. There was a sign at the door for a sushi platter special on Wednesdays $49 that looked promising. I wanted to like the restaurant more because the dining in area was very pleasant.
