Great place for a cheap sushi date! I love walking along Main St. Newmarket exploring the shops, and then walking into Otaru sushi for a nice lunch. Food 4.5/5 I've been here many times and even tried their takeout. Their rolls with the cucumber and rice paper are definitely worth a try, and their tempura is the best I've had in Newmarket for sure! I recommend the seafood dinner if you LOVE tempura like me, it's totally worth the cost, and it's still crispy if you get takeout :D Service 4/5 The service is good, not great. My boyfriend and I used to travel all over Ontario trying to find the best sushi place, and after stumbling upon this cozy little restaurant we've been hooked ever since. Otaru has the best of the best of everything - ramen, sushi, sashimi, even the salad is unbelievably good. We've never once been disappointed after several years of eating here, and the waitress has remembered us and our order since the second time we've visited. Highly, highly recommended to everyone - delicious, authentic Japanese food at an incredible price point. (P.S. The Newmarket Roll comes with 8 pieces... At a Glance: Small, cozy spot for some good sushi! The long version: This place is the definition of "nothing too fancy". It's small, clean and has subtle decor. I would go here again, but I wouldn't call it my favourite sushi place. We were close by and it met our needs well. Started off with Yakitori (teriyaki chicken skewers), Harumaki (Japanese Spring Rolls) and an assorted tempura appetizer. Everything was delicious, fresh and well seasoned. No double frying, we were very happy with everything. Our mains were Sushi Diamond and Chirashi Don. Chirashi Don is chef's choice of sashimi. They obliged me and omitted some of my least favourite fish, and for that, I am grateful. Everything was delicious! The mains came with a light miso soup and small simply dressed salad, which were both good. The fish was fresh and I believe that the price was fair. Service was also good, took a bit for them to come and take our orders, but negligible with the quality of the rest of their service. Overall, if you're in Newmarket, sushi at Otaru is a good choice! read more

Craving some sushi I fired up yelp and found a place I had not tried. I phoned to make sure there was no lineup, and was pleased to hear I could get right in. So I went right over. I ordered Sushi Crystal as a sampler off of their large menu. The miso soup was pretty good, a bit more subtle than I prefer, but it all vanished anyway. The salad was simple, just lettuce and dressing. I suppose it takes a lot of skill to slice sushi that thin. I mean so paper thin that I couldn't take a photo because my camera couldn't find a point to focus on. The token "crab stick" was also unusually chewy. I suspect the value of the protein on the plate was about $1. I also ordered the Newmarket Roll, since a sushi combo is never enough. It was about 98% rice and tobiko, with a hint of something non-rice in the middle. I didn't get through half of it. The place is nice and cozy, not divey but not poser either. Just comfortable. Service was good. But I find myself seeing far better value in the packaged sushi at the kiosk at Upper Canada Mall. This place could be great if they amp up the portions to a realistic size. But as it sits I won't try again until someone tells me there is more than a suggestion of fish. read more

I wanted to try this place since it opened. I ordered the spicy maki set $13.50. (Spicy salmon, spicy tuna and spicy California roll) The taste of the sushi was good. Good ratio of spicy sauce, salmon, and tempura bits. The only downside is the fact that the rolls looked small. It was more like mini rolls than full sized rolls with a decent amount of rice and fish. I guess by getting 8 pieces of each roll, it makes up for the size? The taste of the food is a 4 star but the size is a 3. I really want to give this place higher stars cause the service was lovely and the food tasted good. I just expected more from the sizing of the rolls. Their lunch specials seem like a better deal - 2 rolls for 7.95 but I have a feeling the portions will be even smaller, given the price. read more

I usually only come here for lunch, since I go for all you can eat sushi for dinner. The service is really good and it's always really peaceful and quiet. I've only had their bento boxes and a few rolls. From what I've had, their bento boxes are pretty standard and aren't very special, but aren't bad at all. One of their rolls, which is in one of the pictures, is very pretty AND tastes amazing. They char the outside of the sushi roll which gives a unique taste to the sushi, which I enjoyed. Some people were complaining about the warm rice, but I got a roll that was supposed to be hot, so I must enjoy sushi with hot rice then. Though, if you're getting takeout on main st, sushi jun is probably the place for you. Otaru Sushi is definitely more for sitting in the restaurant than takeout. read more

I have ordered take-out on 2 occasions from Otaru Sushi and was thoroughly pleased with the service and the quality of the food. My first order was the aki box which included teriyaki grilled chicken, tempura appetizer (mixed vegetables and shrimp), and 2 pieces each of California roll and sushi roll. My second order included a dynamite roll and beef tataki along with the tempura appetizer. Everything was fresh and hot and tasty. Service was very friendly and prompt. Well that was brutal. We've eaten here many times, and generally, it's been mediocre. The Miso soup is too sweet, the fish is on par with your typical AYCE place. Rice is frequently over seasoned. Basically, this is a mediocre sushi restaurant with mediocre decor, mediocre service etc. Its not awful, but you could do better without much effort. However, it's walking distance from our office so we eat here frequently. But here's where things get worse. I generally don't review places unless they're great, or they're awful, and Otaru just jumped the shark. I asked to substitute my spicy salmon roll with a salmon avocado roll due to a dietary restriction and they attempted to charge us for the substitution. It wasn't a big fee, but the items are the same price on the menu. I objected as I had spent hundreds of dollars here as a regular. They insisted on the fee. Well, you just lost a customer over it. Maybe if your sushi was spectacular I'd shut my mouth and suffer it, but given that I support you despite your food being utterly forgettable, I'm not open to being nickel and dimed by someone thst doesn't value my business. read more

This place has the best service I have ever had from asian restaurant. During our meal (around 30 mins) the waitress came over to fill up our tea for 3 times and she even asked if we need more tea after we paid the bill. The place is quiet and comfortable. I saw a random stranger came in to borrow washroom and she is welcomed with smiles. Cons: food portion is small but taste not bad. The layout is nice, clean, and spacious. The service is friendly and attentive, even taking the time to help my friend's young son. In fact, I would say the service was the highlight of he visit. Now for the food: The strength here would be the cooked foods. Not to say that the sushi is bad, I've just had better; and yes in Newmarket. The tempura had a lovely batter that was light and crispy without being greasy. The soft shell crab didn't have much of a crab flavour but it still managed to taste fresh if that makes any sense. Tuna and beef tataki were very tasty: nice and cool inside and a good sear on the outside. The hamachi collar wasn't totally cooked through and when we pointed it out, they were extremely apologetic. We ordered one of the large platters of sushi and sashimi which came with a good assortment of fish. For the most part it was your standard pieces of fish but there was a torched something in the mix that was outstanding and I could have eaten my weight in it. read more

Love their spicy ramen and takoyaki (fried sqiud balls) which are both amazingly delicious and many other items they have. Never ate in but ordered for delivery on the just eat app and they definitely do deliver on time. Probably dine there soon in the future. read more

This is our third time at Otaru and the service and food have been consistently excellent. We ordered Miso Ramen which was piping hot and the broth was delicious. Then we had yakitori, cucumber roll, asparagus roll, shiitake roll and spicy scallop roll which were just the right size and tasted great. The meals also came with salad that has the best dressing. Do not eat here! Rocks found in food!!! Very disappointed with my order. We ere told the order would arrive at 6:50pm, the order did not arrive until 7:40pm. The food that was supposed to be hot, shrimp, tempura, spring rolls, were all cold. The last bite of spring roll that we took before throwing it away had a rock in it! An actual rock! We called to let them know and got a very defensive response. We were very polite and asked for a refund as we were not satisfied. They told us we waited too long after the order was placed to request a refund (an hour). After arguing and actually driving back to the restaurant they gave us a partial refund of only the food that was supposed to be hot, and told us we ate too much of the food to refund the rest. Do not order from here, food was mediocre to begin with and with the rocks and poor attitude it is not worth it at all. read more
