Ever heard the saying better late than never? I am an ex long time customer that left on good terms. Now that I am Yelping a lot I wanted to give my overall review about my time with Otay Self storage. i will give the pros and cons and also some tips :) Hopefully the names are accurate its been a while. I was a customer for about 7-8 years. I signed my first lease when this was half the size and the 2nd half was all dirt. The manager at the time I think her name was Lydia was very nice and half the reason why i went with this location. The other half of my decision was location. If your looking for the closest storage unit near the border, this is it. You can walk to here in a good 10-15 mins fromn the border. I had a large prime storage unit right in front. I kept my SUV and several belongings in there. Since Lydia, I believe the next manager was Luis? and then Humberto. They were also very nice and i was sad to see Luis go, he was awesome. Here are the Pro's about this place - Extremely secure, never had anything stolen nor heard of anything being taken from this lot. They have several camera and overnight roaming security. It's so secure that if a cat gets in, it can set off the sensors. I've been there in the early am before they opened when security would come by and do a check for motion sensors. Both times it was a cat running around :) See my pic of one of the cat burglars :) Location - everyone says location is key -it is located in a corner sort of (It used to be a closed off road years ago, but since have opened it up to traffic. It is very close to the border. Staff - Turnover wasn't a big issue when I was there, they had mostly the same staff with just a few manager changes. All extremely friendly, even to the point when they were ready to close, I would call them from the freeway and they would stay open a few extra mins for me. Units - the units themselves were in great shape. Early arrival- Most employees were early arrivals in the morning, that helps people that need to go to work on time. Giveaways -people are always giving free stuff away to each other. I had several storage neighbors that gave me excess stuff they weren't using and also when they are moving out. I returned the favor and gave away furniture and some electronics when I moved out. Cons: Very few: Rodents, sorry its Otay and there are lots of open fields out here. That's a fact of life and nature, nothing Otay Storage has done wrong. The units themselves can get dusty and dirty over time, please keep that in mind when storing valuables. Cars can sometimes block your unit, it can be a pain to find them and tell them to move. Especially when you under time restraints. This applies to outdoor units. They had free Wi-Fi then it got abused so they took it away. Not sure if it's back on again. Tips: Get a ground level unit, it can get extremely hot in these units during the summer and the last thing you want to do is go with an upstairs storage unit. Buy covers for your mattress and valuables, it can get dusty and should keep the little rodents out. Overall treat the employees with respect and that is what you will get right back. I loved my time here and I was sad to go. if I ever need a unit again you got my business! read more

We've had our unit for a few months that is used as excess for business needs. We haven't had any issues except with other tenants occassionally blocking our unit when we need to get into it. Otherwise, it was easy to set up auto payments and the staff was helpful when we needed paperwork. No concerns. read more

The service is horrible! I have been paying my rent on time in full for 13 years, and the management has always been less than appreciative, but yesterday takes the cake. I went by the office to provide the proof of insurance they require, and in the pouring rain at 8:59 I was able to communicate thru the glass door that I had my insurance doc. She opened the door, and I handed it to her, she took it and began to slip back inside, when I asked her to make a copy of it, as they have always done in the past. She said I would have to wait until they open at 9AM, and went inside leaving me in the rain to await her return a minute or so later. Why???? It wasn't because she had to do something in order to open, she didn't have enough time do anything. It was not only rude, it was inefficient! She walked away from the door, and walked back to let me a little after nine. It appears that someone gave her a little authority, and she was determined to use it, no matter what it cost the business, or how much discomfort and inconvenience it caused the customer....why??? 13years!!! read more

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THIS STORAGE PLACE. They say they offer forklift service. They just want to trick you into renting with them. Once you rented, and when you request the use of the forklift to move or load something, that's when you find out it's only a courtesy to unload whatever you brought and put it in the storage unit you rented, and from there you are at your own risk. I rented two units in April. I had to rent one forklift and pay $1,283.09 to get out of that hell. Because once you're there, they have tons of rules that you find out when you ask about something. Everything is denied until the manager arrives at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m., or whenever she feels like it. When I grabbed my storage units, the manager's name was Isaac. Great customer service, attentive and friendly. For his right attitude I rent in this place. The new manager, Denise Alarcon, who just arrived in July, is totally arrogant. It seems like you give them a little bit of power and they'll retreat. I also tried corporate at 858-453-0888 ext. 103 and spoke to Yady, only to receive another slap in the face. Unfortunately, this is a Hispanic-dominated area, and there are Hispanics who don't want to help other Hispanics, like Denise Alarcon and her team at Otay Crossing Self Storage. read more

If I could give a 0 star I would !!! This storage facility is very unprofessional and rude; promises were made and not completed. This facility is operates to just get you in the door to get your money. Manager Jesus is rude and disrespectful! Would never recommend to anyone. Not to mention they then try to save their reputation by saying they are "making changes in how they do business and in result bad reviews are being posted" it is understandable that changes are made but when changes are made notices are sent out making their customers aware of new management and or new changes, yet this was not done therefore business at this storage facility Is not being handled professionally. read more

I am so glad I found this Gem!!! They have been a life saver!!! I found them doing a Google maps search. When I called I spoke with the Manager Umberto, he was professional without being pushy, and really went the extra mile. There was no run around, they explained everything upfront. I was expecting some hidden fees and I read the contract with eagle eyes. There were none! They really did an awesome Job! I was given a tour. They explained their policy's, I reserved my unit for 25.00 and they added it to my payment when I went in today. Very pleased. The Positives! 1. WAY LOWER price than expected for my 71/2 X 10 X 12 (looks more like 10.5 in height). I rented a second floor storage unit, they have a big service elevator! 2 .They gave me a free, first haul (only needed 1) 16 Ft. Truck for my move!!! 2. Security check twice a day on the Units, locks, and surroundings. 3. Place was clean! They have monthly pest control because you never know what people are bringing in their storage unit. 4. They have push carts to use for free to push your stuff in from the moving van. My Back thanks them soooo much!!! They also have a forklift for pallets/items. 5. Public Bathroom. Trash Bin was centrally located. Negatives- Pretty much NONE! 1. Sometimes it's a busy place! They have a good amount of international business storage. With the good prices and service I understand this and moved on a holiday (for Mexico) so it felt like I had the place to myself! 2. Watch out for big Trucks near the entrance. They may not give you the right of way. - This is not Otay SS fault but wanted to mention that to you. I really don't have anything bad to say about them and I was very impressed with what they did for me and how friendly the staff was!!! They are near the last U.S. exit before the border so make sure you don't enter Mexico by accident unless you want some awesome Tacos before you come back across with your stuff. They Have BIG units all the way down to small units. I don't feel like I am Hooking them up with this review. They earned it!!!! read more

Great facility they have forklift and will unload truckloads for free. I just wish they had longer weekend hours so if you have a long day at swapmeet you dont get locked out. They give first responders a 5% discount. Staff is very friendly. One of few storage places that can take a 53 foot truck and trailer. read more

I'm really getting tired of this place always hearing my wife complain about the service the hour's they are open. My wife got locked out of her unit, she found one of the workers ridding by and asked if they could break the lock for her, the employee (Ismael) said that would cost 50 dollars cash, so she agreed to the service which I thought was overpriced cause we had other units before at other facilities and they would not charge for this. Not only was it overpriced but his attitude towards her was very rude, that's not very professional, so after this incident she will be looking for another storage place more local to us. read more

I left my key inside my car. we had only 10 minutes before closing. Ismael ( skinny mex with glasses) didnt want to help me... He charged me $50 cash only to cut my lock in 5 seconds. He was straight faced...Rude. And he is main staff here. Other nearby storages open your lock for free. I know because we switch, same space size, cheaper, and not hussling there. I dont recommed this place because if you forget your key one day and its an emergancy its $50 cash. And he even treathen me if I would of opened it myself!... read more
