How is this place not closed? With the lack of diligence of this vet? overcharged me for everything more than the U.S!!! And the worse thing he didn't help my pet he gave a poor recommendation and he lacks to asses appropriately. read more

We took our dog here for some teeth to be pulled. It was a lot cheaper crossing the border to have this procedure done. The place was clean and the doctor was very nice and thorough. They took good care of our dog and he's doing great! read more

We took our golden doodle down there for a routine neutering that ended up being anything but routine, more of a nightmare. Besides trying to charge us for as many other things as he could, he completely botched the surgery. We got a call from him after it saying that our dog was a "bleeder", suggesting he has some sort of bleed clot issue. When we picked up Mookie, he seems ok. The after care seemed like much more than other times I've gotten pets spayed/neutered. Lots of cleaning intructions. The next morning we wake up to a blood all over our carpets. Mookie was bleeding out of his sutures and his scrotum was swollen with blood. We called Dr Lopez and he said he'd be too busy to see us that day and that we should take him to an emergency vet as soon as we could. Also tried to blame us by saying we should have gotten a blood test he suggested before the surgery. The blood test was just to make sure the dog is strong enough to handle the anesthesia, and in no way would have help his butcher job on Mookie. The emergency vet had to open him back up to find that Dr. Lopez took the testicles out but didn't close the veins or the abdomen! Just stitched up Mookie's skin. I wonder why he was such a "bleeder"? Maybe because you never closed the wound! They said he had a hematoma the size of a papaya and had to drain the scrotum from all the blood accumulating from the open wound. Overall a nightmare experience and had to pay 10x what we should have payed because of his negligence. We emailed him with what the real Vets found and asked for a refund, which was pennies compared to what we had to pay. He never replied. Please avoid this Vet at all costs. read more

We decided to take the drive down to Mesa de Otay to see the vet because he was highly recommended by two friends who drive over 3 hours for their dogs. I am so happy we took our little Maggie here. She is a 5 year old pug who had a severe UTI, ear infection and hot spot on her face. Dr. had to sedate her to be able to cure her ear infection and hot spot. He did blood work and an x-ray to make sure it was not kidney stones or cancer. He sent us home with a few medications for Maggie. The vet tech was very good at explaining how to clean her wound and ears and give her medication. Highly recommend the drive here. read more

I am writing this review with a heavy heart. I brought my 12.5 year old dog down to get cataract surgery in April of 2023. Since cataract surgery in California is very expensive, I searched to see if there was a vet down in Tijuana who could perform this surgery for less. I found Otay Vet Clinic on the internet and e-mailed them to see what the price was and the steps to get it done for my dog. Dr. Lopez did say that he was not a veterinarian ophthalmologist but gave the impression that he had done cataract surgery on dogs frequently. We dropped him off on April 23rd to get his eyes tested to make sure he was a candidate for the surgery. Dr. Lopez took a blood test and showed us the result and assured us that our dog was a candidate for the surgery. We also opted to have the intraocular lenses inserted in his eyes to give him better vision for his short sightedness. He was planned to have the surgery on April 24 (next day) and would not be released back to us until afternoon of that day. We booked a hotel in Otay and stayed overnight. The next day at around 1:00 pm, I called the clinic to see if the surgery went well and if Bruno was ready to be picked up later on in the day. Dr. Lopez stated that the surgery went well but that we would have to pick my dog up a few hours later since he had to be cleaned up first before going home. We paid him a total of close to $4000 in cash since he said he did not accept credit cards or PayPal. We managed to pick him up later on that afternoon but was told that we needed to have him wear a cone for the next 3-4 weeks. The cone was not included in the price of the surgery so we purchased one from the clinic for $25. We brought him back home but when he walked around, he still kept on bumping into the walls but we thought it was because he was not used to the cone. I diligently applied one eye drop every 3 hours (even setting up my alarm at night) and the others every 6 hours for a week. The next week was easier since the eye drops were lengthened to every 6 hours and every 8 hours. By the end of the first week, we took him back down for a check-up and found out that his left eye had developed corneal ulcers. Dr. Lopez then put him on one additional eye drop which we applied for the next 3 weeks. We were out of town on a trip for the next 2 weeks after that but had someone watch our dog and apply the medication as instructed. When we came back, we noticed that his right eye was now cloudy and bulging out and he had lost a lot of weight. Also, the cone was now off but he was still walking into walls. We sent Dr. Lopez pictures of his right eye and he instructed us to come down as it looked like there were complications. We however could not since I had gotten shingles and was in a lot of pain. Dr. Lopez then proceeded to tell us that our dog needed to be on steroids to bring the swelling down. I gave him steroids for 2 weeks with no improvement so I finally took him to a vet ophthalmologist here in Los Angeles. The VO took a look at both my dog's eyes and said that he has glaucoma in his right eye (that is why it is cloudy and bulging out). In his left eye, his pupil is misaligned and is now under his eyelid. Therefore he cannot even see out of his left eye that does not have glaucoma. In addition, the vet also said that she did not see any interocular lenses in either eyes (that I paid Dr. Lopez for). The VO also mentioned that the surgery did not look like it was done correctly. My dog has not been the same since his cataract surgery. He has lost a lot of weight and for 3 months after, he was lethargic and would not eat. I wish I did not have him do the cataract surgery. I believe that Dr. Lopez does not have the experience nor the equipment to do cataract surgeries on dogs. I am out nearly $4000 (for the surgery, 2 intraolcular lenses, medication, eyedrops, hotel stays...etc) and my dog is still blind. I am so upset at Dr. Lopez for advertising that he is capable of doing cataract surgeries on dogs when obviously he is not. I would recommend you save your money instead of wasting it - I know of one other cataract surgery he performed on another dog and this dog also went blind. I was so desperate to give my dog the gift of sight in his last years but it did not go as planned. The surgery was so botched up there is no way to help my dog get his eyesight back now. I am so upset at myself for having put him through this!!!!! On top of that, I know why he only accepted cash as we now have no recourse on getting our money back!! read more

This was my experience with Dr. Gilberto Lopez of the Otay Vet veterinary: we took our dog for surgery, had lab tests done, and although our dog had an underlying condition and was at risk for this type of surgery, Dr. Lopez recommended the procedure and suggested that there shouldn't be any complications. Even with underlying conditions, our dog was as healthy as she could be; she was not in pain, was eating well, and her energy levels were as usual, so we decided to follow his professional advice. The surgery was done in the morning and we received our pet back in the afternoon. At this point she had trouble breathing, was coughing constantly, and her health was deteriorating. Again, this was a healthy dog who was running around and playing the day before. After calling him, he explained his procedures during surgery and suggested giving the dog medication which he did not previously indicate, once again assuring that there shouldn't be complications based on the lab results. That evening, my dog's health was getting worse and she was beginning to agonize. We needed to call Dr. Lopez again for further advice but he would not pick up the phone. We went back to the clinic hoping we could contact him again but he was not picking up. Within minutes, our dog died while waiting outside his clinic and didn't hear back from him until the next day. After knowing that his patient had post-surgery complications that same day, it seems that Dr. Lopez had no intention of following up and showed no sense of moral or professional accountability. Maybe it is our fault that we chose to trust and rely on the expertise of Dr. Lopez, who could not tell us the cause of death, but one thing is for sure, our pet did not have to die this way. Had we not been led to pursue this procedure, our dog would have been alive today. Due to his lack of accountability I cannot recommend Dr. Gilberto Lopez. read more

Dr Gilbert Lopez maintains a clean professional clinic just across the border at Otay. He is extremely well credentialed and I was referred to him through long time members of the animal industry here in San Diego. I could not be more pleased with his compassionate care and services. My three dogs and especially my aging poodle have been cared for like they were his own. Dr Lopez is like that. He is a member of the Veterinary Orthopedic Society also specializes in the latest innovations including stem cell therapy.. His rates are also extremely reasonable from what you usually find making it well worth the drive effort. You can also call for an an appt and get a special medical pass which really shortens the border time.. read more
