I ordered a thunderbolt hub recently from owc. It arrived poorly packed... loose product box inside shipping box. The thunderbolt hub did not work... it was intermittent-- particularly annoying when you are doing audio because it would discontinue the signal to the audio interface... which would make the speakers pop... damaging in too many ways to describe here. I contacted them... they asked me what troubleshooting I had done. this unit is intermittent... dont know how to troubleshoot that. They then proceeded to direct me to another product they carry which is like a sticky boot for the cable ... to secure it to the broken unit. "ClingOn" . I cant risk intermittent connections especially when recording audio with audio interfaces which are buss powered... so no, I just want to return the unit. They do not send a return shipping label. I am out $20 and a few hours of my time... terrible experience. At the very least: pack your items well, pay for returns when the items are not functioning. I will not use OWC again. buyer beware! read more

I have the OWC Aura for Mac Pro (2TB) which costs $1429 I have tried numerous times to not only contact OWC support about a problem I am experiencing with this product...it will not upgrade to OSX Mojave. I am getting this error when attempting to install... "macOS cannot be installed because the third party storage in your Mac is not compatible. Please contact the supplier directly for assistance." I did exactly that and contacted the supplier OWC 3 times and all 3 times was given different instructions on how to resolve this which none of them worked. Upon digging further I did find that they corrected this for their MacBook pro users. They actually created a firmware update that, in their words...."This firmware update removes that requirement and ensures your Mac will receive the appropriate EFI update as part of the system installation." I am sure they sold alot more MBP SSD's than the MP SSD Makes me think they don't see any benefit in developing a fix for their MP users because there are probably not nearly as many. And when i contacted them all three times they were quick to blame Apple, in other words, its out of our hands. But clearly the installer itself says to contact the supplier. OWC is at fault for this, it's their product and it should be made to work seamlessly with Apple products, not the other way around. They are selling these products because of Apple, not the other way around. They also instructed to me a "work around" that involved cloning Now, to clone my drive twice would require a substantial amount of time invested, the install of any mac os upgrade alone can take a few hours, what they are suggesting is that I spend lets say maybe 6-8 hours of time, cloning, installing, reinstalling, etc. when really OWC should be the ones to make sure that their products are compatible with all future releases of OSX it scares me that I would have to go to these lengths to "work around" a limitation that really is a defect of OWC's product in which they are charging good money for. I bought this drive to make my life better and easier, thats not what is happening now, this is a big headache. not only that, but what about the next release? what about the next 3 releases 2 years down the road? will I have to repeat the process again and spend the amount of time it will take me here and do another "work around"? thats like putting a band aid on the problem. I hope that OWC would care enough about their customers that they would address this issue directly and make their drives fully compatible and seamless with Apple updates moving forward. Very disappointed in OWC. They say that they have no control over any OS that Apple releases in the future. I understand that, as far as I know, nobody has control over that lol. I think thats just common sense, but what they do have control over their products and the firmware running on their products. This is exactly the attitude and information I was given as I reached out to OWC. Not our problem, we cant control what Apple does, instead of taking care of their customers and finding a solution that is convenient for them. The other thing, which is completely untrue that they told me is that "there is an EFI update that has to go on the board of the computer. That does have to be done using an Apple original drive." I was so excited because I do have the original Apple hard drive so I spent time removing the Aura SSD, reinstalling the original Apple SSD and updating to Mojave that way. It worked like a charm, flawless install. I was assured that this would "update" the board of the computer and then I could reinstall my Aura SSD and it would work from there. Unfortunately it did not work because the problem is not with Apple, the problem lies within the firmware of the Aura SSD. My suggestion and warning to you....do NOT buy any of their hard drives as they will become incompatible and will become useless. You have been warned. read more

I purchased one of their docks last Christmas, the miniport loses connection from time to time and you can't fix it by simply unplugging the miniport cable, I have to unplug the whole dock and replug it to make it work. And I am a photographer, the USB port in the dock doesn't support CF card reader. My card reader works perfectly with my previous MacBook, so apparently, there is something wrong with the USB port as well. I tried to post a review of the product two weeks ago, but it sank into the ocean... I gave it a one star, but until today, it has not been listed on their site and everything is still 5 stars. The biggest problem with them is that they filtered out all the negative comments regarding their products, the ones that don't work, have flaws, so you will never find out which product is really worth the money. In their review process, their staff will all review all your comments beforehand, if they find out your comment is negative, they won't bother publishing it, so on their site, it is always 4-5 stars with no major problems encountered at all. This is such a deceit behaviour from a merchant. You better off going to BH or other online stores. read more

Order has been a total disaster. Conflicting emails (one says shipped and two other say out of stock), tried calling customer service twice and was on hold for more than 15 minutes each time when I finally gave up. Tried chat and first time it just took me back to support page. One email said that serial number would be provided when Item shipped. When finally got through on chat, they confirmed that item had been sent and that said I had been provided with email with the serial number (which I had not. I have checked email including spam/junk several times a day). Got a serial number but it did not work. This 5 star did not come easy but I believe is the accurate representation all things considered... I called OWC the day after my screen had fallen off- 3 months after I installed my new HD with OWC parts, using OWC videos on their website etc I was told I'd receive an email where I could send in pictures to have them review it and make sure the damage would be covered. I didn't get the email so I called back, while on hold, I logged online to their chat, and while already in a panic, had a pretty lousy interaction with their support agent. She expressed that she was busy, and so I waited about an hour before she hung up the chat. All I asked for was for her to email me that template I was supposed to get earlier. I followed up on the phone again to the third agent and continued to escalate until I reached the Director of customer service, and ultimately the CEO himself. I escalated because I was told OWC would NOT cover the screen repair, which I found to be crazy since nobody could really be sure how or why the screen fell off, but also I was escalation because it took so much effort just to get that verdict- specifically I had been essentially ghosted by 3 of the employees who never called back or emailed back...one of whom actually hung up on me for just asking her to email me. But, I'm writing this review 2 months after the incident, and while at the time I was furious that while I was paniced about my computer, these "customer service" agents didnt even care enough to call back, or follow up on their own word. All i knew was I had a major project near the finish line and now I was at the mercy of OWC to help me get the computer going again, or spend $1000 at apple. So why 5 stars? While it was stressful at the time, the CEO and the director of customer service got together and decided to help me out anyway, despite their team deciding my damage was due to my own installation error (we can debate that but its moot). Ultimately, I think these actions of the CEO/Director of CS show how far the company is willing to go to demonstrate that they do in fact care, and I cant fault a company for not executing perfect communication during COVID, theyre all figuring it out. DO NOT SHOP HERE! They sell COUNTERFEIT APPLE products. The sell FAKE Magsafe Macbook chargers as "Apple Genuine 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter" and others. Mine died after a few months, that's when I discovered it was a fake. The fake from OWC weighs 193 grams, the real Apple product weighs 260 grams and is made of a solid feeling case, the fake one will flex with pressure from my fingers. Same UL code! The type on the OWC looks like a bad photocopy up close. Very dangerous. They are aware of it, and have been for years it seems. Against my better judgment ($100 cheaper was a big incentive), I decided to buy a white homepod from MacSales/OWC. Upon opening the box the homepod had several majorly discolored spots which while hard to see in photos are very obvious in person. I contacted their customer service and was offered a replacement homepod but it would cost me a 25% restocking fee OR they could give me a refund. A 25% restocking fee for something which is their fault? No thanks. I'll take my money and buy it elsewhere where I won't get a discolored product. Since 1985, I've owned many, many Apple products. And I've ordered nearly all of my upgrades and replacement hard drives, etc from Other World Computing. They have earned my trust, as I have always gotten plenty of value from their products and service. I've also been grateful for their helpful installation videos. They've enabled me to install all the memory, hard drives, PCI cards, etc that I've bought from them for the multiple Apple products I've owned. Frankly, I'm surprised by the negative reviews here... Seems like a lot of whining about various, speculative irrelevancies. Incidentally, have you noticed the growing trend of thoughtless individuals racing to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater' in their petulant, little "1 star reviews"? Most say more about themselves (obliviously) in their "review" than they do about what they're supposed to be reviewing. PRO TIP: Click on the profiles of those who leave "1 star reviews" on Yelp and notice if being an entitled crybaby seems to be a sport for them. He guided me through options that would work with my "ancient" Mac Mini and I ordered the one that would allow me to keep using it if things changed. If I could give zero stars, I would. If you're in the market for a refurbished iMac, DO NOT BUY FROM OWC. After about 8 months, the iMac started having random kernel panics. I sent it in to get it fixed since I bought the Eclipse coverage. They had it over a week, OWC said they fixed it, they sent it back to me, I opened the box and turned it on and it was doing the exact same thing!! At this point, I am irritated. I send it back once again. They have it for 3 weeks now. OWC says the screen got damaged during transit and they blamed it on UPS because I packaged it exactly the same way they sent it to me. So they said they had to fix that as well. They don't update me, I have to keep emailing them asking about the status of my iMac. Finally after 2 weeks, OWC says they replaced my iMac and they were sending it back. I just got it back and there is no power cord in the box. I am beyond furious at this point. I will never buy anything from OWC or refer anybody to them ever again. To top it off, they have not been apologetic or offered me anything for my troubles. OWC is very unprofessional. I ordered a refurbished iMac 27-inch. It arrived on time, in good condition. After unboxing, the unit is in very very good condition with no visible scratches. Powered up and went through software configuration setup without issue. I did not have to interact with customer service. I purchased their OWC Eclipse 2-year extended warranty. UPDATE 062022: By writing a negative review, I was finally able to get somewhere. Wish I had worked with this rep from the get-go. They sent a replacement iMac: I can confirm it has a different SN and doesn't have the same cosmetic damage as the original. As to whether the crashing issues are gone, only time will tell, so I'm temporarily changing my rating to 3 stars. The fact that it took so much effort (and time) on my part for them to make this right still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But at least I finally got someone willing to work with me. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Buyers of their iMacs, beware! I just flushed $3,062.39 down the toilet. I initially wrote a negative review, but then deleted it in the hopes that OWC would make it right. Unfortunately, after returning my computer for inspection and waiting several weeks, they did NOT make it right. Not only did they blatantly blow off the cosmetic damage caused by opening the iMac using metal tools, claiming it was dust (seriously? Dust?), but they did not acknowledge my issue that the computer randomly crashed. Now they are sending it back without fixing a thing??? I used the exact same software I ran on my 2014 iMac, which never presented a problem. The crashes always occurred when I was working on an important project (Using Adobe CC) where I lost all my progress. I took a risk purchasing a refurbished Apple, and it did not pay off. This computer is a lemon, and they are not willing to do anything about it. I'm a freelance graphic designer with a very limited budget. My hope was to purchase the latest iMac that would also work with Windows before Apple went with their own processor that wasn't compatible.
