I was in Connecticut for a work related event. My original plan was to go straight to the venue for a couple hours before checking into my hotel. Traffic delayed my arrival by over two hours so instead of going to the venue went straight to the hotel and found that Outer Light was only 2 minutes away. So I stopped and had two terrific beers. Outer Light Brewing Company: Good Vibes, Forgettable Beer We spent the weekend brewery-hopping between Mystic and Niantic, and while Outer Light Brewing Company has its fans, it didn't quite hit for us. Tucked away in Groton's industrial pocket, the taproom has that classic warehouse-meets-beach-town aesthetic--high ceilings, garage doors, and a laid-back crowd. It's the kind of spot you want to love, but for us, the beer just didn't deliver. We tried the Juicy Bull$#!t and Hoppy Beerday--two New England IPAs with fun names but fairly average execution. Juicy had the haze but lacked punch; Hoppy Beerday wasn't bad, just kind of... there. I usually judge a spot by whether I'd go in for a second round. In this case, we didn't. We did consider swinging back on Sunday--Father's Day--for their free cookout and a kid-friendly pint glass decorating activity. But if we're honest, the draw was the event, not the beer. That said, service was solid. The staff was friendly, upbeat, and even gave us a few good restaurant tips in the area. No complaints there. Outer Light feels like the kind of place with potential. The name's great, the vibe is easygoing, and it clearly has a loyal local following. But if you're chasing standout brews, there are stronger contenders nearby. Great beer selection, there is something for everybody. I had a few Juicy Bullsh!t and the Cloudbreak Double IPA. They were all really good - I prefer the Juicy because it's a really nice Hazy IPA. We also tried the "What the Hefe is going on" which was a pretty solid Hefeweizen. They are located in a bit of an industrial area and only had 4 tables indoors but had about 10 more under a tent outside, which was great in the heavy rain. read more

None of us had been there before, but we all agreed that the tasting room area had great atmosphere, service was friendly, and it was a nice quite space for catching up with friends. We ordered a flight of beers, a pint of ch ch cherry bomb and an apple cider. Overall the flavors were good, but not memorable. I didn't find their taste to be unique, but it was smooth and easy to drink. If you're looking for a brewery to hit up that isn't packed, this is a good option we went in prime time on a Saturday and there was one other table, so service was fast. Outer light is my absolute favorite local brewery. I've been here too many times to count and every visit is equally as great as the last. In my opinion the coffee stout is their best brew. But what I like best about them is that they experiment with different styles of beer. From saisons, to red ales, gose, oyster stout, fruit beer, and of course IPA variations. They often hold functions just outside of their brewery area(such as an octoberfest coming up)..... but I often secretly hope they outgrow their current facility and move into something a little more roomy. They are however located just around the corner from my place if employment(electric boat), which makes a Friday afternoon stop all to easy. I stopped by here this past Sunday afternoon with my wife for some afternoon drinks. We had spent the day in Mystic and were headed to the Mohegan Sun that evening whenever we had some time to waste. So naturally I turned to Yelp and found Outer Light Brewing which I hadn't heard of before. The brewery itself is located in quite an industrial section of Groton but the tap room is nice. It has a bar in the back with a number of high top tables that you can sit at. You are also able to see their brewery with the fermenters and barrels through some windows on one side. Last but certainly not least they had a cart filled of board games that you could play. On this occasion as I often do when visiting a new brewery I decided to go with a beer flight to taste a number of different brews. It's $8 here for a flight with the glasses looking deceptively small. After looking over their menu I ultimately decided on the firelands (smoked Porter), shark biscuit (IPA), SUBduction (IPA) and cloud break (DIPA) which was considered an imperial and so cost an extra $2. As you can tell from that list I went a little hop heavy with my selections but still enjoyed all of them. My favorite of the bunch ended up being the cloud break and there wasn't a single one that I didn't like. While I was drinking the flight my wife and I ended up playing connect four which was nice as well. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Outer Light brewing is a pretty cool place and I enjoyed all of the beers that I had as well. read more

Was just at The Outer Lights Brewery in town and had the privilege of listening to some 50+ Caucasian man discuss how transgender people have no place in society because you're either male and female. Then decided to double down and said women are not as strong as their male counterparts. I didn't finish my flight and we brought our glasses back up the the bartender and let him know why we were leaving and he just shrugged and grabbed our card and went back about his business. Kind of sad... At the end of the day, this man leaned HARD into not only his yt privilege but his toxic, insecure masculinity to dismiss a two WHOLE groups of people and when the bartender had the chance to stop it instead of losing business he just walked away. read more

Ventured across the river to Groton in search of some craft brews straight from the source. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Outer Light was not only open, but shortly celebrating their official grand opening, and put it on my calendar to make an appearance to see what CT does with breweries. At first blush, you could easily miss this brewery, situated in s business park industrial complex just south of the freeway. Its tasting room is conveniently next door to where all the brew magic happens, so it's easy to get a tour of the facility and learn about what goes on behind the scenes to make what's in your frosty mug. The party was well attended, with an outdoor tent for some select tastings, tall tables, food, and live music. Inside were the rest of the offerings, and the wondrously gleaming brew tanks. Tastings were $5 for a giant glass of liquid sunshine, or you could purchase a growler if you really fell in love with something and didn't want to make the drive back. In the outdoor tent, they were tasting the Hefeweizen Outerweiss- traditional and European tasting, a Saison-spicy and aromatic, and the Academy German Pale Ale-a trusty and straightforward solid contender. Indoors, we sampled the SUB-duction IPA- my husband's favorite in a Submarine dispenser, the Imperial Pilsner- a 9.+ ABV heavy hitter with crisp notes and dangerously drinkable, and the Jonathan Edwards oaked Chardonnay, which despite being at a brewery event, was my favorite thing we sampled. Staff were attentive, frazzled and mostly knowledgeable about the product, with a few exceptions that I chalked up to grand opening staffing nerves. I was pleased with the variety they make including stouts, ambers, lagers, and include wines for a change of pace from another CT crafter. They also offer brewer dinners with paired foods for each drink, and community events where they join forces with other local brewers and winemakers. This place is great! I've been going to OLBC for over a year now. When they opened their doors I lived a 5 min walk down the road so I had high hopes they would be good. Well I became a regular fast and started visiting as often as I could. The space is great. On a quiet night there is plenty of seating for you and yours to bring some food to eat or play one of the board games they have sitting around. When it's busy...well it's lively and a hoot. It's honestly one of my favorite spots for a beer with friends. The beer is what you come to expect from a brewery in today's fast growing market. Amazing year round offerings covering the standards, coffee stout, red ale and IPA. All above average in my book. And a constantly changing rotation of seasonals. After a year there are definitely some beers I can't wait to see again (their imperial stout, any one of the double IPAs). They aren't afraid to try other styles either like Saisons, Heffs and Gose. I consider myself very lucky to live in an area where I can grab such high quality brews so easily. The people working there make you feel like you're coming to a friends house. I can't say enough about how friendly and welcoming the crew is. So wether your a local or visiting from out of town using Yelp to figure out the good breweries in town (I so often do this) stop in, have a drink, make a friend and enjoy! A couple weeks ago I spent my birthday at outer light Brewing Company. I had messaged staff in advance on Facebook, and they were totally flexible. It was such a hot muggy and rainy day, I didn't realize that they had a huge garage door wall that they roll up so it was a little hot even with the fan. But regardless we had a great time, we brought our own food in and tried a bunch of their samples and Pints. I loved the punching the ocean IPA, I definitely want to track that down again if they sell it outside the brewery. Highly recommend stopping here and trying their beer, spend the whole afternoon if you can! read more

The male server that worked the evening of April 16th was very rude throughout multiple interactions. First thing he did was tell my wife she "looked like she was 12 years old". Then he told her to pick which person at the table she hated the most and they had to give their credit card for the tab. Just very inappropriate behavior from a server. At the end of the night, I asked if he could split up the check for our table of 5. He laughed and said "you think I know what you guys drank? Ok, so not even realizing it, they have one of my favorite beers....Ninja Trail Green Tea Pale Ale. You have to try it. I hate when breweries are only good on IPAs and other beers are so-so. They also have good Amber ale and coffee stout. Names are creative but not gonna lie, I can't remember any of them. Very nice staff, small seating area, plenty of parking. Nice little warehouse brewery serving up some very good beers. No food or outdoor area unfortunately, but again, the beer is solid.

It is almost frustrating how good every single beer they offer is. I'm not really sure how to pick a favorite nor was I sure how I could try them all and still drive home! I had no idea it existed until I found myself wandering around the city limits of New London, CT. My friend and I, every other week, drop ourselves in a random city and look for interesting breweries and bars. This one takes the cake. I would honestly put it in my top 5. I fully hated the town of New London and feel that going there was a regret, but I will, no lie, be finding an excuse to be in Connecticut again to revisit this place. Note: There is no food available here. What they DO have is takeout menus and allow you to order out and eat it at the bar / surrounding tables. Very cool feature to make up for no kitchen. One quirk that was not nearly negative enough to remove a star is the amount of space. Going here on a Thursday - Saturday mid-day to night, you should not be surprised if you end up standing with your beer and walking around. My husband and I tried Outerlight tap room last night. Buried in a strip of businesses near the galaxy roller rink- so didn't wow us on the look outside. We walked inside and only one 2 top was available and 2 seats at the bar. We ended up at the bar and ordered 2 flights. They were $8 each and a great way to taste 4 brews. The beer tender was very helpful- forgot his name but he was great. He had me trying brews I would never order AND...I really liked them. Like the Noank Smack Oyster stout- delish! I went for the Lonesome Boatman and found 2 or 3 new tastes. They have games to play- we played connect four. The place cleared out and refilled before we left. Cool wood bar and tables- feels industrial. Downfall would be no food- but people order pizza and we brought cheese- olives- crackers etc to munch on. No table service- you order from the bar for your table. Give it a try. Unexpected surprise. read more

The tap room at the brewery has a lovely, relaxed vibe that is welcome to families, friends, and/or couples. They have the doors open wide now, so there's a great outdoor summer feel. And, they also have board games, which is one of my favorite things! I tried a flight with the Lonesome Boatman, Libation IPA, and the Coffee Stout. The IPA was my favorite, but the others are not to miss. I think the coffee stout even won an award, so if you're into that kind of beer, you should definitely check that out. They are new, but the brewmasters here know what they're doing and have been doing it for a long time. Another one....not the Maine Beer....another new brewery that is helping the economy and keeping locals happy. We visited recently with friends on a Saturday and we arrived to a bustling brewery. I was stoked to see almost every table taken and the bar full. Luckily we found a table - technically for two but good for four - to gather around. Two of us got a flight, one a glass of Jonathan Edwards wine, and one a glass of stout. This is the place to come if (A) you don't only drink IPA's, (2) you are with wine lovers, or (C) you like to chillax. I have to admit that I usually find myself drinking IPA's and stouts, mostly from Treehouse, so I find other beer hard to beat. But I ordered a flight including the india brown ale, two versions of the libation propagation stout, and an IPA. I was shocked that I liked the brown as much as I did. The IPA is basic, and the stouts were sweet. The barrel aged libation is rich rich rich and should be sipped slowly. And at 9% abv you'd be smart to suck that down with a piece of cake or something. The crowd was happy and there were plenty of games sitting on a table waiting to be played. You can bring your own food and in my opinion as long as you have a drink in front of you then you can sit there all day. read more
