Oh my gosh it's so bad. What an instagram scam (yup!! I fell for it!!)... please don't make the same mistake. Here's what you get for $450pp: :: 90min+ of standing around happy houring, aka getting you drunk so you don't know how bad the experience is. I didn't drink so i was keenly aware, as were others who left mid-dinner (shout out to the awesome local kombucha peeps!!) :: Only during the last 20 minutes of that were small bites brought out, and they went so fast I got 1. :: Then stand around listening to the life story of the 20-something who just joined this month and is managing the events. Then walk over to the table and listen to the story of another 20-something who manages front of house. Thank goodness the location was beautiful while they were delaying our 200m walk over to the table :: finally sit down to cold rolls sitting atop the table and wait 20 minutes for a half cup of beet salad (the first "course") :: wait another 30 minutes for an excessive amount of mediocre, cold fish without any side dishes while the temperature is lowering to 50-degrees on the windy coast. :: wait another 30min for an equally wasteful amount of duck, also with no side dishes. :: and to finish the experience off, a gourmet popsicle! Attended the OITF in Palo Alto in June at the Hidden Villa. This was our first and last time. The cocktail hour and a half in the olive grove was nice with a signature cocktail or wine. The passed appetizers were mediocre at best, cellophane crab roll (very fishy tasting), bland deviled egg and some cold and hard cornbread cup with avocado filling. The tour of the farm was standing in the field listening to someone discuss sustainable farming. Groups then formed two lines to enter the dining space, the access to the plates you bring vs the ones they provide created a bottleneck. Quite a challenge for a party of four to find a way to sit together. The first course was on the table as we sat down. It appeared that the family style portion was to serve eight people per table. Vegetables with a spinach dip and sesame bread/cracker was fine. We then waited as other tables to the right and left of ours got served grilled stone fruit with burrata cheese. As we did not get a plate the folks on either side tried to pass us any left of theirs but hardly any was left. At this point we had also not been served any wine despite the wine maker/rep was at our table talking up the wine. About 15 mins after it was clear we weren't getting a plate we began to inform folks that there must have been some mix up. Apparently servers were assigned tables but ours was missed? One very long row of tables, 8 to a table but they just couldn't figure it out. At this point I should mention the the sun is still very strong and they had tried to position umbrellas every so often but as the sun set the umbrellas had to be tilted down and that would cause them to bump into the folks sitting nearby. So either you had the sun shining directly on you or you were ducking way from an umbrella corner. The second course was average. At this point they realize they have been forgetting our table and we receive some wine and the entree which was beef that was cold and tough. There was plenty of this but much was not eaten. Finally, we move onto dessert which was a berry tart and again was okay. At this point they have taken our plates to be washed and we retrieve them on the way out to the parking lot. As we arrive at our car one of us decides to walk to the executive port a potties before the hour long drive home only to find they had already been removed. I understand from friends who attended OITF on the beach that they had a wonderful time. I had hoped this was just a bad night/chef/venue for them. I sent them a request to provide feedback but was ignored. At this price point our experience was very poor. We have been fortunate to travel globally and have had some amazing experiences but also some very poor experiences. Unfortunately, this one was sub par on the food, the service and the venue. I just got a response from the business owner that they never got an email from me. That is true as I reached out via their website and asked for someone to call me and provided my contact info. They asked that I email them but honestly my review says it all. read more

Outstanding in the Field at The National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. was an unforgettable experience of farm-to-table magic. Every bite told a story of the land, the seasons, and the people who cultivate it. Upon arrival, I discovered the parking lot was quite a walk to the check-in location. I wish there would have been golf carts available to shuttle those who needed assistance. We began with pre-dinner drinks (wine and cider) in the garden. Parasols were provided to block out the sun. Then we walked over to the open field by the iconic arboretum columns to select our seats at the largest round table I've ever seen. Unless you bought group tickets, seating was first come first served. Chef Jeremiah Langhome of The Dabney DC wowed our tastebuds. The menu leaned towards vegetarian/vegan. However, the lamb shoulder was my favorite course. It was perfectly paired with Old Westminster Winery "Anthem" wine blend of Cabernet Sauvignon & Petit Verdot. One of the evening highlights was dining with Stacey and Casey of Fireside Farm, who provided some of the vegetables served. This was a great opportunity to network as there were several corporate tables. Would I attend it again? Only if I could see the menu beforehand. I love unique dining experiences. For the price point, I wanted to love everything on the menu, but didn't. However, the location, phenomenal service, and great company saved the evening. Note: Attendees have the option of bringing their own plates as tradition. Unfortunately, my fine bone china dinner plate was badly scratched when returned from cleaning. this event is so magical. We were in the most beautiful vineyard, the weather was perfect, the wine was flowing, the folks hosting were so delightful. this was my first time at one of these events and it was so much fun! we ate delicious wood fired pizza and oysters under the olive trees. we were taken in a tour of the farm and met the baby goats. then we sat at a long table for 100 and had the most delicious meal. we made friends with the folks sitting across from us and we laughed so hard. I hope to get to do this again sometime. truly magical. read more

Outstanding in the field serves an experience in locations all over the U.S. At $425 per person. This event was nice but I think the price point was ridiculous. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it cost them a pretty penny to rent out a private location, pay the cooks and servers but to be honest the taste of the food was subpar at best "not something I would pay $100 for. The service was fantastic 5 stars. The set up I'd give 3.5 stars. Wine "which there was plenty of" was just ok 3 stars. Non alcohol beverages I thought were the best 5 stars. Amount of food was a major fail in my book 1 star!! For the main course they gave us fish on skewers 3 per table of 8 people! We literally got 2 pieces of fish about 2 inches long by 1/2 inch wide "with lots of veggies" for $425 this is absolutely Unacceptable in my book. Will I do this again? Not a chance, do I recommend them? Sadly I can not. read more

The friendliness of the amazing staff who constantly checked in with guess and talked with us and made us laugh to always bringing us such amazing food handled by the chefs. The location in West Hollywood at the farm was so peaceful and just so beautiful to be around. OMG! What's not to love?! I'm #OITF obsessed and thankful that I have had nowhere near the experiences I've read here. I'm ready to weigh in as I just wrapped up my 3rd dining experience, and I cannot love it any more than I already do. From the "cocktail hour" to the endless pours, and all courses of the meals presented by A+ chefs, staff, and servers. OITF is always top tier and worth every penny. On top of that, the family style aesthetic, and the views make for such a great atmosphere. I always leave having fallen in love with my table mates, and it's always great to see Jim (such a gracious host) and be inspired by his vision in crafting this concept and these experiences before it was trendy. My experiences thus far: 1. Coachella 2. Kaiya Beach (FL) 3. Pescadero Beach (CA) I've loved each and every one of the events I've attended, and I'm currently keying in on my next trip. Thursday 19th Sept 2024 we attended the Outstanding In The Field event held on Wadmalaw Island (Charleston, SC) The overall experience was very good. Beautiful location at an oyster farm, delicious appetizers, great mix of guests, over all excellent Farm-to-Table meal. Now for the not-so-goods (hence the 4 not 5 star review) 1. There was no choice of wine with opening appetizers. A very nice sparkling rose was served. Plus beer. If you didn't like sparkling rose you were out of luck. 2. The founder, who apparently goes to every event, did not show on Wadmalaw. Instead a new hire, Marcie, was sent as our hostess. Marcie was a very nice young lady, however she shared that she was an emergency, part way through the season, hire. Hmmmmm ..... you can't but wonder what's going on? Oh well, I guess maybe because the event wasn't sold out the founder decided he didn't want to show. 3. Towards the middle of the main course wine service diminished significantly. We sat with empty glasses and had to ask for refills for our part of the table more than once. It was like the wine supply just dried up. 4. Dessert - carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I had not expected to be served carrot cake - it was good - but so is the carrot cake you can buy at WholeFoods. Would I go to another OutStanding In The Field event/dinner? Yes, overall it was a pricey, but fun and memorable event. I would like to try the Asheville, NC event next year. read more

We attended our Event two weeks ago. I had to wait some time before I reviewed our experience. I had to find the words. The concept for this Event is unique. The service during our Event was top notch at Tonnemaker Valley Farm in Woodinville, WA, thank you Sarah. The wines provided by Matthews Winery were good and free-flowing, thank you Jenn. We were a party of 6 and the Manager seated us all together which was perfect. The porto-potties were clean and in great shape, except for the stinky oil candles ( and I know why they have use them ), but it really skews the taste buds with the wines. UGH ! But after these positive compliments, I am at a loss to figure out the price of $ 385.00. Now, at $ 185.00, a good deal. At $ 285.00, that would be a stretch. But at $ 385.00 per person, the price of a Michelin starred restaurant. No way ! The value just isn't there. For apps with the wine, they had two fruit bowls being passed, and some skewers of very tough beef / pork. That was it. No bruschetta, veggies, cheese and crackers, pretzels, popcorn or anything to help soak up the alcohol. In fact, no starch of any kind was provided during the entire event. The menu specifically mentions French stye bread, and Jack, the Maitre'D, kept reassuring me that bread would be served, but alas no bread. I even called the local upscale grocery store, 1 mile away and offered to buy bread for all 100 people, and they said that they could fill the order. But Jack didn't have one person to go pick it up, and Hagen's doesn't use a food delivery service. We didn't drive so I did not have a car. Full disclosure, after the first 3 courses, a Staff Member managed to find a small loaf of bread and brought it to our area. I kind of felt bad as the people around us gave us dirty looks. The first two courses were very good, fresh and tasty. The tuna crudo was very good also. Unfortunately, the main course was again the tough and fatty flat iron steak, maybe the same cut as the app skewers ? And no potato, pasta, rice, or other starch. Now my family had a restaurant years ago so I know the business. And I can forgive a lots of hiccups. Stuff happens. But for $ 385.00, one would think that a big emphasis would be on the food. Unfortunately, I would give this experience a " C ". I polled our group of 6, and the closest folks sitting next to us and they were disappointed as well. With the beautiful setting in the rose garden, escaping the hustle and bustle and heat of the festival. It's an amazing oasis of flavor and culture. I love how the farmers and vintners come and speak with you while you dine. I've met some amazing people and even gone out to dinner at some amazing restaurants with some strangers I met there. This event was fantastic from start to finish! I attended the Wattles Farm dinner in North Hollywood and had the most amazing experience with the food, the staff, and the location. Upon arrival, I was immediately greeted by warm and bubbly staff, and the first two hours served as a reception with fun drinks (cocktails and wine), appetizers, and a fun farm tour. I then sat down for dinner at this long beautiful table where we were provided with course after course of delicious, farm fresh food. It was a family style meal, which made it easy to bond with the people sitting around me. The service was incredible and my glass will filled at all times! I will definitely be attending another Outstanding in the Field dinner soon. I couldn't recommend this experience more!! read more

I can't believe I paid $400 (times 2) for this. Booked this 7 months ago for my partner and myself plus a couple of friends and we have genuinely been looking forward to this for months. Our friend works at Hestia, which is why we booked this event, the head chef was from Hestia. We eat here often, and it's truly one of our top spots in all of Austin, so we had high expectations. Also, this is twice the price when we eat there pp, so we knew it had to be mind-blowing. We were so, so wrong... Pros: -It was at Willie Nelsons Luck ranch. As a born and raised Austinite, we were stoked it was going to be here. I know Willie is involved with farming so we were excited to get a look into everything he helps with locally. The little town he has created is soooo cute! Had a few horses we got to pet. -TerraPurezza owners did an awesome job explaining regenerative agriculture, we learned a lot. It was fun watching them feed the pigs and they just had a new litter of piglets too! However, a con is I felt we were getting this extravagant tour, but it was short. -The Texas sunset was one of the best I have seen all year. Truly breathtaking. The table was awesome to see set up in the middle of Willieville. -Staff was friendly and our server got into the Willie spirit with her pigtails and bandana which I loved. Now notice not one pro is about the food or wine. Now to the cons! Cons: -They had a rotation of the same 4 appetizers during the first hour. Everyone was just waiting around in the field kind of awkwardly. 2/4 were good apps. We didn't want to overindulge thinking we had a huge meal ahead of us. I wish we did since we left this event hungry still. Also, they had a total of 10 chairs out with 200 attendees. Not everyone can stand in the Texas heat for over an hour. -The 'cocktails' were just Straightaway canned (awful) spritz drinks poured over ice. I couldn't drink mine, had to toss it. The wine was just okay. -The food was the main reason for this 1 star. Such a letdown. I would have paid $100 for this experience, definitely not worth $400! I was expecting their infamous steaks, scallops, fish, ANYTHING besides what we got...honestly the bread and butter was the highlight and they took that away quickly since it took up table space but I would have rather kept it to have gotten somewhat full. -First dish: Shio koji-marinated calabaza (5/10) Nothing exciting or memorable. -Second dish: Roasted pumpkin. (-1/10) PUMPKIN! Seriously, no one likes pumpkin, at all. It is extremely bland. Everyone in our area looked at each other in confusion and could not eat this dish. It was terrible. -Third dish: Roasted black English Pork (6/10). Finally some meat and the only dish we enjoyed but it was still average for Hestia's name behind all of this. -Dessert: Sticky toffee pudding. (4/10). We were thinking of leaving before the dessert because we were just so over it at this point. We should have because this was nothing we would have missed out on. -We were the youngest in attendance here (early 30s). The general vibe felt a bit ageist here from some of the staff (wine folks at the beginning mainly). I felt like they were judging me whenever I went for a refill. -It was cool hearing about OITF's story, but I felt like speaking for nearly over 20 minutes about it was overkill. Too much patting themselves on the back after a while, not what I came here for. So yeah...paid $400pp thinking we would get some extravagant 12+ course meal when dinner was just 3 dishes + a bland dessert. I really wish we just used the $800 towards going to Hestia instead. We could have eaten like true Queens that day. Left feeling like a hustled fool. read more

This is my second year dining with Outstanding in the Field at Wattles Farm-a charming and surprisingly peaceful setting located within the heart of urban Hollywood. It's so much fun to meet interesting new people and very much enjoyed our lively dinner conversations! Kudos to Chef Balo and his staff for our fabulous, delicious dinner. They are very friendly and accommodating, pick the coolest places to have the events and everything runs seamlessly. I have already booked 2 more dinners in 2 other states and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this experience to everyone. read more

We attended the event at Wattles Farm in Los Angeles this June. A delight for the senses in every way -- entirely uplifting. A beautiful and historic garden location, with growing crops & plants & trees everywhere. Fell under its calming spell from the start. The OIF crew were all so kind & accommodating & lovely. Chef Balo's offerings were artfully presented and every course oh so delicious. Found our hosts at Wattles generous with their knowledge and most welcoming. Re Pescadero experience November 2023. I'm sorry for this review but i just want folks who sign up for this to know what to expect. Looking at the reviews on Yelp it is REALLY hot or miss. My expectations for 425$+ meal x 2 was disappointing- for me I think it is better to spend this money and time at a physical restaurant with a similar price point rather than this. Food was far far far far from a 3 or 4 or 5 star experience. Hors d'oeuvres were far and few. Appetizers ran out and weren't enough for our table- Salad ran out. Salmon was very dry and over cooked- I was embarrassed for the fish monger. I think they call it a wine pairing with meal but I think it was more like just the local vendor they chose and the wines they had (including 1 that was undrinkable). There were about 100 diners at the event and seating was haphazard so people had to shift several times so they would be able to sit with the people in their party. Staff was lovely. Setting was lovely. Food was so so meh. read more

Also, despite their claims to be following CDC guidelines, I would say they are not at all making these pandemic-safe events. If you have even the slighest apprehension, I would tell you to not go. -Seating is squeezed together, over 100 guests next to each other and across from one another. Hello stranger to my left within 2 feet. -Servers didn't wear masks -Food is served communally at the table, family style. -They didn't ask to see my vaccination card or proof of covid test. There was also a general lack of professionalism about the event, seating, and other logistics. Groups got separated from one another because there was no guidance on how to sit. I've been to several Outstanding dinners, and they were that ... truly outstanding. The venue is fantastic whether it be on a beach, in a cave, at a farm, at a winery ... they are all unique and all fabulous. The meal from the appetizers to the deserts is thoughtfully designed to bring you joy! The food is as good to look at as it is to eat - artfully presented and really delicious. This review is for the Saturday dinner at Coachella on the first weekend. The execution was perfect, The staff was gracious and welcoming. I loved the Aperol spritz and the dessert was to die for. Front Porch Farm - June 30, 3024 This was our 5th visit to OITF. We eagerly looked forward to it, since all of our other dinners had been amazing experiences. Well....this one, not so much. To start, the appetizers were virtually non-existent. We saw two trays the entire time we were on the lawn. After the speaker(s) and a brief walk around the farm, we moved to the table set by the river (except you couldn't see the river due to the brush. We were dismayed and disappointed in the food. Very little differentiation in the courses; lots of tomato and cucumber. One course more or less blended into the next (although one was an odd mixture that included mussels, calamari and melon). But how many different tomato courses do you need? The main course was bizarre to say the least: three platters that came one at a time - cold string beans, polenta that looked more like gruel, and a platter with cold lamb skewers piled on undercooked sausages. The sausages were cold, and very pink inside. A few of our table mates actually asked the helpers if it was safe to eat. One replied "oh, that's the salt they used" and the other took it back to be reheated. In general, a pretty dismal meal. The service was glacial; lots of time between courses and got slower as the night wore on. Not what we have experienced in the past. In fact, we left before desert. Maybe it was just an off night; unfortunately we were there to experience it. In the final analysis, this was an event that was beyond underwhelming. If I was OITF management I would be embarrassed.
