I was given a non working Linn LP 12 by a client which sat in my basement for over 5 years. Finally I bit the bullet and started doing research to find authorized Linn service people. I found Overture Audio in Ann Arbor. I live just outside of Detroit so Ann Arbor is local-ish. I took it in a few weeks ago and met Thomas O'Keefe who is the Linn LP 12 whisperer. He thoroughly explained everything he needed to do. I picked it up yesterday and I am smiling from ear to ear. This turntable sounds utterly fantastic. A bit about Thomas. He is one of thee top Linn LP 12 guys in the world. The little things he did and showed me make such a difference. Arrows on the belt letting you know which way it should go. I'm going to give feedback from a customer point of view regarding interaction with staff only, as I never got the chance to hear/talk about product service or quality of the organization. I called ahead to ask about hours- Me: Hi, are you open until 7 tonight? Bob's response: yes, we are. Me: ok thanks. Bob: hangs up, no good bye or thank you. Inauspicious start. I walk into store 20 minutes later." At 5:30pm. Someone is moving stuff around- middle aged guy salt/pepper hair with beard. Guy: how can I help you? Me: I haven't been in before, just came in to look around. How is the equipment merchandised? Guy: it's not, just wander around. Turns and goes back to moving stuff around. I'm a seasoned retailer with a 30 year career of selling, leading, buying and managing at store level and national level. I'm a sophisticated buyer with lots of money to spend. This guy looks like he's been around. Maybe having a bad day. Maybe just the way he rolls. But if this is the engagement that you expect of your people, I suggest you just close up shop and do something else, as you are no where near any maximization of your sales staff and helping customers by selling them on why they should buy from you. Your job is to engage with the customer, educate, build rapport and sell them on the virtues of your product offering and to teach why a customer should do business with you. Never got to engage simply because your representative was in no way receptive to my being in the store. Body language, interpersonal skills and just the ability to smile can happen a long way. I then walk into store down the street- Paragon Sight and sound. I'm greeted as I walk in- 20 minutes until closing. Young lady smiles and asks me if I've been in before. Then asks if she can tell me how the store is set up. She is gracious and warm. Offers me complimentary water or coffee. Treats me as if she's welcoming me into her home. I don't know if I'll do business with Paragon. But I never even got to hear anything about Overature's offering and am sure I won't be doing business there. Do better or fail. read more

Overture Audio has the best in audio equipment, the best values and the nicest guys working there. I'm very impressed with their knowledge and helpfulness. I moved back from Phoenix about 5 years ago, and since that time I go in fairly often to see what they have available. They always have something that interests me, and with the help of the three guys in the store, Craig, Keith and a new guy, I know I'm getting the best advice you could get anywhere. With their years of audio experience, I greatly appreacte that I can rely on them for advice. On my last visit, Craig went over and above to help me and I was so grateful for his help. I even love Keith's dogs and they always make my day too. I have always believed that Ann Arbor has only two important retailers that specialize in high end audio equipment: Paragon Sight & Sound and Overture Audio. I have most recently purchased Pro-Ject turntables at both establishments. (Yes, I'm one of those types that believe one can never own enough turntables.) Both have played wonderfully. Of the two retailers, the buying experience at Overture Audio was superior. The staff I interacted with was earnest, attentive, and informative. I don't think it would have mattered to them how much I was going to spend. Which is exactly the problem I had with Paragon. It felt as if I needed to bring in my most recent checking and saving account statements and two bank references before I was going to be taken seriously. And maybe that's the selling approach Paragon prefers: Is it ultimately more profitable to make one $10,000 sale than ten $1000 sales? Who knows? It's a selling approach that is easy to spot in retailers and personally annoys me, and ultimately led me to go to Overture Audio to spend the money that might have gone to Paragon. read more

I really like the guys at Overture, and the store is evidence of their dedication to good sound at a wide variety of prices. They carry both budget and high-end brands, and new and used equipment. More importantly, however, they are helpful and direct, and don't try to push you to solutions that don't fit your budget or needs. They are clearly passionate about hi-fi sound, and want you to enjoy it as well. Their main speaker selection is Paradigm, which is well-known for providing some of the best bang-for-the-buck out there, along with other highly-regarded budget-oriented brands like NAD amplifiers and CD players, and Rega turntables. Of course, they carry some much higher end brands, but this is a great store to build a fantastic sounding system on a budget. My fiancee and I recently got some used Paradigm speakers there, and they had them set up for us in a listening room to give them a test, and let us listen for as long as we wanted. They even let me borrow some speaker cables to test out the differences between what I was using and what they were at the store. I've also purchased a turntable cartridge there, and their installation was included in the purchase price, incredibly fast and most importantly sounds fantastic! Overture Audio is the kind of hi-fi store you want to come back to for all your hi-fi purchases. Highly recommended. read more

Needing a new phono cartridge, I checked the online price for Ortophon Blue cartridges and found that OA charged the same price; moreover, OA installed it and set up my turntable free of charge. I should also add that OA has a very nice headphone bar with some nice selections. Lastly, I called for more cartridge advice and Craig was very knowledgeable and generous with his time. I have bought two stereo systems from Overture-15 years apart. They are fantastic. Overture sells high-end quality equipment and provides incredible hands on customer service that continues through purchase, setup, and any post-purchase issues. A storm knocks out your media player-no problem, they are on it immediately. You screw up some of your settings-they patiently walk you through how to fix them. I dealt with Keith Moorman over the Internet and I couldn't be happier that I did. He was selling a discontinued, rare headphone as part of a headphone/amp bundle on-line. The headphone requires a very powerful amp to drive the headphones so Keith was ensuring that who ever bought the headphone would be able to drive them properly- just to show you what a stellar guy Keith is (Seriously this headphone requires SPEAKER amp levels of power!). Seeing as I already had a high-end amp that was more than capable of delivering the necessary watts, I was only interested in the headphone. Keith was more than willing to sell the headphone separately and at a reasonable, no, excellent price considering the rarity. Keith described the headphones exactly as they arrived and did an excellent job packing them for UPS shipping. Keith was kind and courteous over the phone, and I will gladly do business again with Keith in the future if given the opportunity. I was not shocked when I found Overture Audio's Yelp and it was nothing but "5-Star" reviews. This is a world-class Hi-Fi shop. If I'm ever in Ann Arbor, I will make it a priority to stop in and see the showroom floor. read more

The quality of the gear for sale is high, and the folks there know their stuff, but some of the staff are appallingly rude. While I was waiting to have a new cartridge installed on my turntable, one of the salespeople actually told me to leave the store because he wanted to play something for another customer, so I got to spend fifteen minutes killing time in the parking lot. I grant that mine was probably not the biggest purchase of the day, but I have a problem with being treated like a second-class citizen for only spending $300. I will also admit the guy who served me was pleasant and very professional, but his friend could take some lessons. (For the record, they appeared to be taking COVID-19 protocols seriously -- all staff and customers wore masks, they made sure folks were spread out, and they had plenty of hand sanitizer.) Audiophiles will find what they're looking for, but if the staff don't feel like being polite, don't be shocked. read more

I went to Overture Audio to demo some speakers from Dynaudio and GoldenEar. I got excellent service in my 2 visits. I have demoed several speakers at different retailers in the area, and Overture Audio's service is as good as any of them, if not better. I must especially recommend this retailer for carrying Dynaudio speakers. These speakers are very clear and transparent, and deserve a demo whether your budget is $1000 or $100,000. A point of caution: They don't allow returns, but will take the time to help you find what suits you best. They stock several reputed brands of speakers, headphones, amplifiers, surround receivers and DACs (Digital-to-Analog converters). I haven't looked at their used gear, but it might be worthwhile, given the quality of their new gear. This is a no-pressure environment and Craig is always helpful, even if your budget is $1000, which is a pittance in the world of hi-fi audio. Hi-Fi speakers are a tricky purchase, because what is bang for the buck today may not hold up for the next 5,10 or 20 years. However, Craig can help you navigate your options to get something which you will be happy with for a long time. Today there are several internet-direct manufacturers, some of whom will let you try their speakers at home for 30 days, and even pay for return shipping if you are not happy with it. However, I am personally not comfortable with buying speakers without first hearing them first. There is no substitute for a knowledgeable retailer such as Craig Johnson and his colleagues at Overture Audio. read more

I'm a Michigander transplanted to New Jersey. I bought my first component stereo system from this shop in 1988, when it was Absolute Sound, in downtown Ann Arbor. They were very patient and worked with me on my limited budget. For 21 years, this system provided me with a great deal of enjoyment. When it came time to upgrade, I came back "home", since I've never found a stereo shop out here that provides the same level of quality service that Overture Audio does.
