OH MAN. This is your typical general store, particularly a typical Maine general store -- basic grocery items, locally made gifts, things like that. But don't go for any of that -- go for the freaking 7-NAPKIN BURGER, named "Best Burger in Maine" by Food Network. I stopped in here while on a business trip and had no idea until I saw the sign... so happy I did. It was absolutely one of the best burgers I've ever had. Well cooked, flavorful, and SO MESSY. Overall, good place. Love that it is a small general store with a dang good hamburger. They always seem pretty busy. We can in on a day that seemed busier than they could handle. My only complaint about it was the guy who took our order in the kitchen. He may be the owner, manager or cook. I don't know. What I do know was that he was rude. We couldn't get our order in fast enough for him and he showed it, blatantly. Not my idea of customer service. The food, we all had the burgers. Voted best burgers in Maine. I don't know if they were the best in Maine but they were pretty darn good and didn't disappoint. I'd go to this place again. Best burger ever! It isn't a trip to Rockland for us unless we go to the General Store. They have other great things aside from the 7-Napkin Burger like a haddock sandwich (Friday's and some Saturday's) and the Maine Italian sandwich (this is different than what someone from NJ might expect) but we rarely order it. The burger is a meal in itself and it comes with chips. I have thought about getting their excellent looking sides like their 3 different kinds of coleslaw, but I end up full. I always have to get a pumpkin and chocolate whoopie pie. Their whoopie pie is the best I have ever had. Moist and the filling is just decadent. The place is small and on a busy day a seat might not be found but the staff is always nice and for the size kitchen and amount of people coming through they have a quick turnaround. The store has a few food items and little trinkets as well as the food portion of the General Store. I've bought a few souvenirs here in the past. Locals come by often and a few times I've shared a table with them and chatted. I have been going here for ten years now and I just couldn't imagine not having one of those burgers once a year. I told my now husband that he never had a burger like the one at the General Store and he didn't believe me. Well he does now and it too is his top priority when going to Maine. read more

If you aren't familiar with this place, you might not consider it for lunch and you'd be missing out. Since it gets busy, we called in our order ahead of time from the beach and by the time we arrived, the food was ready. Burgers are juicy and can get messy so make sure you grab some of the wet-naps. The haddock chowder had a whole haddock in it - be careful though cause there were bones. The place has about 5 tables inside and picnic benches for outdoor seating. read more

What a wonderful reimagining of a famous landmark in Owls Head,Maine! It's a perfectly welcoming general store with gifts and books ( for kids and adults) ,many with a connection to the state of Maine or the sea or Owls Head itself. Pillows, spices, towels, hats, first aid supplies, local artisan jewelry.... And the list goes on. However the star of the show is the food! We had veggie burgers and the famous 7 napkin hamburgers. All delicious and perfectly prepared to our specifications. There was a delightful assortment of soups and sides and prepared meals in the cooler for take out And save room for site-prepared blueberry muffins and fresh coffee! Service was prompt and friendly and the outdoor dining area is clean, comfortable, and scenic. The lighthouse is right down the street and the working harbor is a photographic opportunity. Great location, great food, great people. ... The next time we are in Maine we will stop here again! We have viewed the menu board and will definitely try the pizza and other entrees. read more

We stopped at this place because my husband saw a banner stating that the Food Network named this Best Burger in Maine. When asking the cook about it, he told my husband that this happened when under a previous ownership. We both ordered hamburgers, and were disappointed. The only flavor appeared to be on the outside. Loved it! Stopped by for lunch on a recent trip to Maine after visiting the Owls Head Light (just down the road!). Everyone was extremely friendly, pleasant, and helpful, and the food was fantastic! We had crab rolls there that were outstanding, and grabbed sandwiches to go for a boat ride later that held up well. I especially loved the chicken salad. And the blueberry muffins! Heard about this place, that at one time it had the best burger in Maine. Is it a large burger?...Yes. Is it anything special?...No. I was expecting something different but I've had better burgers. Great Roadside Food Spot. The burger's are really excellent, cooked on a flat-top until they have a fantastic sear. This is definitely a "no frills" place, but that is what makes it special. It is located close to the Owl's Head Lighthouse, so if you are in the area to visit the lighthouse, it is a convenient place to stop for lunch or a snack. My friend and I both thoroughly enjoyed their famous "seven-napkin" burger. The name is perhaps an overstatement. Similar to what another reviewer noted, I finished mine using only four napkins. The burger is cooked to order. I asked for mine to be done medium and it arrived medium rare, which was fine with me. The burger is of substantial size, but not gargantuan. Both the beef and the bun are of good quality. If there is a condiment you don't like (in my case, mayonnaise), they will leave it out. In nice weather, you can sit outside at one of the tables. My friend, who is a sucker for Christmas ornaments, succumbed to temptation and bought a cute lobster ornament at the check-out counter. read more

I give the seven napkin burger 5*!!! It was everything I expected from the reviews!!! Cooked to perfection, but 7 napkins did not cut it, it was more like 12, it was tender and juicy!!! Tried the burger and the haddock chowder. Burger was good -- very loose, crumbly yet juicy quality. But the haddock chowder was an epic fail. It should have been listed on the menu as milk and potato chowder because that was all that was in it. I think the haddock must have swam through it and escaped back into the deep blue sea. This is the best burger in Maine. Not only did Food Network Magazine give them that award, but I have sampled many, many burgers around this state, and you simply won't find one better. Not even a Bag Burger compares. The rest of their food is really excellent also. Came for the famous "Seven napkin burger". It was worth the trip from key west. Juicy, flavorful, and messy.

The best news is that a new owner is about to take command. We all love the GS but Rob is sure to make it better. He was surprised to find there is no ice cream now--due to no functioning freezer--but this will change next summer, and meanwhile look for longer winter hours and subtle changes in the menu, only for the better as Rob, who also runs the little cafe at the nearby Rockland/Owls Head airport, knows his stuff. My wife suggested he add salads at the GS: hello! It's been a glaring void. He is all over the idea. And check out his lobster roll at the airport spot, the Aviary. Not the best burger in Maine. I've seen the owner buying her meat at Hannaford's grocery store. While there's nothing terribly wrong with this, I think it's strange to be voted the best burger in Maine using Hannaford meat. Been here a few times and though it's "cute" and in a good spot, I think it's overrated. Last time we went there was for breakfast. It was on the cusp of lunch so the person taking our order said there was limited breakfast but they were just starting lunch and had just put the lunch menu out. Hubby had breakfast and I ordered a club sandwich to which the girl at the counter said, we don't have the ingredients for that. I then orderd a chicken salad, to which she replied the same. I then ordered a ham sandwich of some kind and the same response. So I said never mind, I won't get anything just coffee. To which the counter person very happily replied OK. Wow. After hubby got his breakfast we sat down so he could eat and a girl came in who worked there, looked at us, made a dirty look and said "Who eats breakfast this late....ummm OK?" In a very snotty and rude tone. We will never, ever go there again. Go to the "Gig" in South Thomaston, they are nicer, have better prices, more of a selection and you don't have to fight for parking. read more
