Beautiful! The space is inspiring with subtle touches everywhere. Drinks contain authentic spirits sourced in Mexico and fresh fruits - no shortcuts. I loved the Mezcal Margarita but am obsessed with their House Cocktails. El Mago is life changing with its depth and freshness. The chips and salsa are fresh and perfectly seasoned. They even have happy hour from 4 to 6 at the bar.
Oyamel was an awesome vibe and even with great company, the small bites were enough and cocktails flowed to satisfy. Friday night we risked with no reservations and was able to snag a table. One glance at the bar it was elbow to elbow, so we dove right into our dinner. Service was quick and friendly. I chose two pescado Baja (Maryland catfish) tacos and one hongos en molito (wild mushrooms and peppers). Both were delicious and the flavors were nicely layered, however my hongos tacos fell apart on first bite. This was a bit saucy and probably better to get the sauce on the side. The chile de arbol in the pescado was so bold, mmm mmm. To compliment my dinner I chose the mezcal margarita and loved it. It hit that perfect sweet spot - bright citrus Magdala liqueur, followed by a gentle, smoky depth of mezcal that lingered just long enough. Onward to the bar to enjoy some after dinner cocktails and I chose the Estilo Ron Cooper. When I say Dua Lipa's "One Kiss" randomly played in my head as I sipped away, the flavors of this mezcal was fun and delicious. Time was fleeting but had it frozen, I may have tried a few more others and had the bartenders spin me something unique. Our bartenders for the night were very personable and engaging. I'm looking forward to coming back soon.
I was in DC with my friend to see Romeo and Prince Royce at Cap 1 arena. Since we all know that the food there is expensive and not appetizing.. We picked Oyamel which is another restaurant by Jose Andres. Since I'm a fan of Jaleo I knew that I would be in good hands. The menu is crafted to small plates. I picked taco de Lengua (beef tongue) And chicharonnes quesadillas. Both plates were delicious. I had beef tongue tacos before but not like this. Meat was tender and savory. My quesadilla was delicious. The comp chips were good, but house salsa was served warm. It was good too but the house made guac IS A MUST!! Agua fresca de pineapple ... I'm be honest was a miss... for what they charge I expected better.. No garnishes.. completely watered down. . I don't recommend. The choco flan a miss..... very dry the chocolate part very dry and no flavor. Betty Crocker quality cake. The flan wasn't what expected .. very disappointed. Service was good but a lot of the menu items can be hit or miss.. it's like a 50 50 chance you might like.it or not.
A Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. Delicious and beautifully presented cuisine,and the butterfly-themed decor added a dreamy touch. Chips and Salsa: Absolutely amazing! Worth coming just for the complimentary tortilla chips. The corn flavor was incredibly rich, with a subtle undertone; the salsa was perfectly balanced between sour and spicy, with the garlic, onion, and cilantro adding a refreshing and pungent aroma. Everything was just right. Ceviche con Citricos: The dish I was most looking forward to, but it was only so-so. The sauce, made with citrus, pineapple habanero, and Fresno peppers, unsurprisingly had a refreshing and tangy flavor, but it was slightly too sweet and lacked spiciness, significantly diminishing its vibrant and stimulating effect; the bass was also bland in terms of oiliness and sweetness. Salmon would have made it much more delicious. Julienned jicama was sweet and crunchy, which was quite interesting. My friend and I initially thought they were pears. Taco de Lengua: My first time trying a beef tongue taco , and it was definitely the most interesting taco on the menu. The beef tongue was clean and odorless, stewed until tender and juicy, with a savory flavor similar to Chinese lo shui滷水. The salsa, white onion slices, and cilantro were fresh and crisp, creating a complicated texture. The tortilla was baked perfectly, not too dry, and had a good chew. Everything was right too. Quesadilla de Chicharrones: The pork belly was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with the fatty parts almost melting in your mouth. It had a rich smoky and marinated flavor, but it was a bit too salty for me. The salsa had melted, reducing its spiciness considerably; it was basically just tomato sauce. The cheese was rich and creamy, softening the flavors--the more the merrier! But that's where the problem lay; the cheese was visibly unevenly distributed. Huarache de Bistec: The bread was very hard and difficult to cut, but the simple, fresh corn aroma was irresistible; the flank steak was tender and savory, and the smoothness of the cream and sunny-side up egg contrasted beautifully with the refreshing salsa. Ladies and gentlemen, please add an egg! Tamarind Juice: Sweeter and lighter than regular tamarind juice. More suitable for a wider audience. The restaurant is very busy, so please make a reservation in advance. Also, since my friend paid the bill, and she went to the restroom while the waiter coming back for the tip and signing, I suggest that we wait for her return, but the waiter refused to wait and insisted that I sign on her behalf. Is this reasonable?
This is a Jose Andres restaurant. It is very good. It's also got a unique menu. I saw a grasshopper taco and I had to order it, and it was great. Crispy and hollow. The texture was more notable than the taste, but it's easy to be adventurous at nice restaurants like this because you can trust that it is going to be good. I also always appreciate complimentary chips and salsa, and the crudo was great as well. Not to mention the bartender was super friendly.
Trivia: What creature adorns a wall as well as evident in several mobiles? Fresh, house made guacamole. Highly worth it. Comes in mild, medium, or spicy. I definitely want to try the medium and spicy next time. The tortillas, as explained in the menu, are every bit unique and delicious. Service was great. Attentive and friendly. I'm a big fan of chips and salsa, and both are terrific. Slightly smoky and smooth.
We had been looking forward to our visit to Oyamel after all the hype about this place. While some of the food was great, the majority of it was more in just "okay" territory. I guess the delta between the high expectations and the average outcome is what brings me to a three star rating. We had reservations for 7pm on a Saturday. No doubt this is peak busy, but fortunately we were promptly seated at a table. The table we were sat at was pretty small considering the tapas style dishes I was expecting. The moment we were seated I was wondering where all the plates would land. To start I ordered a pineapple agua fresca. Folks, let me tell you, this was the most basic, blah agua fresca I had ever ordered. Other places will usually put muddled fruit or some sort of garnish. This was barebones in a small child's glass. That was rather disappointing. However, the chips and salsa were delicious and if I'm being honest, this was my favorite part of the meal. We started out with a fruit salad of "Gaspacho" estilo Morelia, which has chunks of pineapple, jimica root, cucumbers, queso fresco and some chile. This was a good dish and refreshing, but I wish the chunks of fruit would have been cut smaller to elevate the texture of the dish. Another appetizer we got was the Quesadilla Huitlaco which was tortillas with Monterrey Jack cheese, Mexican corn truffles, tomatoes and garlic. Honestly, this was like something my Tías would've made for me as an afternoon snack as a kid, so it didn't quite rise to the level of what I was expecting. I still don't know what corn truffles are because I couldn't find any. I think it's just corn. As our other dishes came out, we began to eat those and soon our table was full of plates which made it very awkward to maneuver around the table. We also ordered the Enchiladas de Queso, Tamal Verde and the Pulpo Negro. Only the Pulpo Negro was a 5-star dish. The others landed at a 2.5 to 3.5 territory. Last we had the Pastel de Tres Leches con Pina. It was about a 4 star dish, but seemed it could've been a bit more restrained in the overall sweetness. Throughout the meal, the noise level was high, but we knew this going in. It looked like maybe the did have some noise abatement panels but there should be more of an effort on this front to make it less boomy. Once thing I really did love about Oyamel was the decor. It was fun, artistic and had a definite point of view. I loved it, but wished the dishes as a whole were able to rise to that level. While a few of the meal components were excellent, the majority of the meal seemed average.
Oyamel is an upscale Mexican themed restaurant with a comfortable feel. I had their shrimp sandwich which came with Caesar salad. Free chips and salsa also came with the meal. The red sauce was thick and rich. My sandwich had crispy bread and included shrimp and vegetables with a tang. The sandwich was decent. Service was fast and friendly. The lunch was very reasonable given what was served.
My daughters had been wanted to check this place out, so we stopped in before heading to the theater one night. Our server told us it would be the best Mexican food in DC, so the gauntlet had been thrown! They serve in tapas style, which we love because it gives us a chance to try so many different things! The Atun Pacifico and Coliflor were among my favorites...and I don't ever really like cauliflower! The Queso Fundido was a little disappointing because we kind of expected it to be flambeed tableside. Figuring out the right quantity to order at a place like this is always a challenge, and the recommendations the servers provide are always a little too high. We had 11 items for 4 people, which was probably a bit more than we needed.
I was really impressed with the ambiance here. Super cute and picture worthy! The tacos were delicious, super flavorful, and clearly made fresh. The drinks were great too--well-balanced and worth ordering again. The service was excellent, and what really stood out is that they took care of us at the very last minute without rushing us or making us feel like an inconvenience because we definitely stumbled in right before closing time. That kind of hospitality goes a long way. Overall, a great spot for good food, good drinks, and a welcoming vibe. I'd definitely come back!
Went here after many years and boy was it loud and crowded, but it was a Saturday night! Waiter was very friendly but took a while for our drinks to come out. I got the Serrano margarita and it was perfect and delicious! For dinner, we ordered the sweet potato and black beans dish, the Brussels sprouts, the mushroom tacos, mixed vegetables salad and mushroom empanadas. Omg, they were all so delicious! The sweet potato and empanadas dishes were amazing!! For dessert, my hubby got the coffee "custard" and I had the tres leches...both SO good! The tres leches wasn't as "juicy" as most I've had, but it came with coffee ice cream, strawberries and whipped cream and was so divine!! I can't wait to go back again soon!! read more
Another fab find in DC. First... and foremost...they make their corn tortillas in house. Second, my quesadilla was filled to the brim and affordable. My wine was great and the decor is really fun and inviting. Did not love the chips and salsa. read more

How does Jose Andres put so much flavor and freshness into his dishes? This was my first time to Oyamel. We walked from nearby National Gallery of Art to have brunch and were able to walk right in at their 10:00 opening. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Our waiter was helpful in navigating the menu and had excellent suggestions. Don't forget to ask your server for the daily Agua Fresca: fresh fruit of the day prepared as a puréed drink. Amazing. I had the Taco De Chorizo Con Papas as a starter. Look at the photo that I took. Looks simple, right?? It is an AMAZING burst of flavor! Next I had the Huevos Rancheros. And I must not have had it prepared properly in the past, because it's nothing like you'd expect. Forget scrambled egg with peppers and chorizo, it is NOTHING like you have had in the past. I can't wait to go back again. By the time we left a queue was forming up, so better to get there early. read more

I wanted to try a different Jose Andres restaurant since I did not particularly enjoy the foods I tried at one. So, going for restaurant week lunch sounded like a good idea. I need to preface this review by saying that I have not had much Mexican food, especially not the hole-in-the-walls or food trucks that usually have good cheap eats. I was given tortillas and salsa. I don't like salsa and so, I cannot comment on whether it was the best salsa or not. For starters, I got the chicken soup 2/5. It was just okay and I could not finish it. Maybe it was because I am not a fan of soup all that much. Next, I got the tamal verde 4/5. It was delicious and one of my favorite meals. The third course: pork tacos 5/5. It was so flavorful and well-seasoned. The toppings augmented the taste of the meat. Highly recommend this dish. For dessert, I got the tres leches 3/5. It was okay, not as good as I had hoped. read more

After living in the DMV for a year, I have finally step foot into a Jose Andres restaurant. This was one of the few restaurants recommended by people I've interacted with. It was just me at the time and the restaurant was packed with a waitlist to be seated. I was told by the hostess that I could just go sit by the bar and be served by the bartender. For drinks, I ordered a Escribo ($20), which was a mezcal type drink. Overall tasted great, but portion wise, not worth the premium. For entree, I ordered three tacos: Cochinita Pibil con Cebolla en Escabeche ($8) - Pulled BBQ pork which I loved the flavoring. Pescado Baja California ($7) - Your standard battered fish taco. Taco de Lengua ($8) - Protein is beef tongue and I was seeking something unique beside cactus and grasshopper. I would recommend this. After my tacos came out, they were also passing out freshly made chips and dip, which I presumed is something you want to serve at the beginning of the dining experience, but here we are. The other positive is that they don't charge any ridiculous fees because you choose to not cook yourself food for the day. read more

We spent the day in D.C from our trip to NYC and had researched this restaurant before we got there as we wanted some delicious Mexican food. The place was not super busy so we were able to get a table immediately. Chips and salsa were brought to our table right away and they were amazing. We ordered our food-I ordered the tamal Verde for $11 which seemed like a good price. You only get 1 for that cost, but okay, the taste was delicious. My husband and kids loved their food too. The reason for the low review is the service. At first, our waiter was attentive, checking in with us to see if we were ready to order--after we placed our order, we didn't see him again until it came time for the check. I have one minor request when I go out to eat-please keep my water glass filled, especially when it is 88° outside and not once could I get his attention to even ask for more. Overall, the food was good and the ambiance was nice (AC was amazing) but the service was majorly lacking. Due to that, I would probably not dine here again. read more

When you have a place on your list for a while but it ends up being underwhelming... the margarita was good, I did love how the cloud gave a nice subtle salt balance, but not a must have. The food was also nothing to rave about in comparison to the prices. I'd probably only return for happy hour. read more

After a fun day of visiting some of the museums in the area we stopped in at Oyamel for some much needed lunch. Great spot and seemed very popular despite overall rating on Yelp. The food was good and the staff was friendly. The highlights were definitely the tacos. We had the chicken taco and the pulled pork taco and both were delicious. Cocktail program is strong, but maybe need a little improvement. I will say the cocktails are very boozy, no skimping on the alcohol with these cocktails. Great staff, very friendly. That always makes a meal better. Most of the food came out quite quick but there was a point where we almost thought they forgot something as it came way way later. Overall a good experience. I would go back without hesitation as there is more items on the menu I want to try. read more

Upscale casual, hip vibes. Good service, servers responsive. We got a few small plates (brussel sprouts and cauliflower were great, well seasoned veggies), split some tacos, got some shrimp, and the tres leches cake. Overall food quality was pretty good. I visited this place a few times throughout the summer and clearly after the first time, I couldn't get enough! Regardless of whether you're at the bar or at a table, you're greeted with chips & salsa which is always a nice treat. I've tried everything from the salads, to the tacos, to the ceviche. I will definitely have to go back for the guacamole which is freshly made on the dining room floor. Special shoutout to my bartender/server Carlos! He was always so sweet and quick in service when I sat at the bar. My absolute favorites were the Caesar salad, ceviche with citrus (bass), a few of the tacos, and the tres leches! The few times I've gone, I've ordered a la cart and off a prefixed menu. Worth every penny. read more
I took my mother here while she was visiting and we loved it! The atmosphere inside was lively and the decor is really modern and artsy. The chips and salsa they give you are incredible and we really liked the smokey taste of the salsa. We both had tacos and loved each of them. My personal favorite was the beef taco, which was very juicy. The rice is amazing! We got a side of it thinking that it would be the typical mexican rice like any other mexican restaurant, but we were wrong! It is way more fancy. The service was really outstanding and the overall price was reasonable considering this is a bit more upscale than say Guapo's or Taco Bamba. I highly recommend it if you are in Chinatown. read more

J ordered a Mojito Dorado and it was perfectly balanced- good shake and nice foam. I wish I had snapped a photo. He made some recommendations. It was packed with diners at lunch time. Modern and interesting decor, pleasant atmosphere and food was creative and good. We ordered Fresh made guacamole: very fresh and good. 4*Ensalada de sandia Watermelon, cherry tomato, jicama, radish and mint, tossed in a tamarind dressing with chile pequin, topped with queso fresco: creative, mixed texture and flavors. 3*Ceviche de Culiacan * Marinated bass with shredded green cabbage, serrano, lime, onion, cilantro, tomatillos, and house-made salsa pequín Sopa tortilla: it was standard. 4*Peasant style chicken soup with tomatoes and tortillas garnished with crispy tortilla strips, avocado, chile mulato and queso cotija: tasty soup. 3*Col de bruselas estilo San Quintín-Crispy Brussels sprouts with a chile deárbol sauce, pumpkin seeds, peanuts and lime Albóndigas enchipotladas con queso doble crema: strong flavors but lacking texture. Brussels were not crispy at all. 4*Meatballs in chipotle sauce with queso fresco and cilantro: meatballs were tender. 3.5*Tamal verde-Shredded chicken tamal with a green sauce of tomatillo, serrano pepper and cilantro: too bland for me. 3*Taco cochinita pibíl con cebolla en escabeche-Yucatán-style pit barbecued Rocky Hollow Farm pork with Mexican sour orange and pickled red onion: it was ok. One of my favorite Jose Andres (who I personally believe should be designated a Saint for his humanitarian work) restaurants in DC. The food here is delicious but since we happened to be walking by and saw seats open at the bar, we decided to have a couple MORE cocktails after our dinner. :-) The service at the bar was outstanding! I counted four bartenders at one point, and it isn't even a very large bar. Service was friendly and unhurried, and NOBODY had to wait for drink. The restaurant was very classy inside and out. It wasn't crowded and there was also no noise from 7th St, even though it's just outside. The whole vibe was one of a classy and understated dining establishment. I highly recommend Oyamel! read more
The food here was hit and miss for me and generally quite salty. My friend who was dining with me enjoyed the Pomegranate Margarita and the Brussels Sprouts. We both agreed that the Tres Leches was worth the whole trip. On my next visit to town, I would say the dessert is worth ordering on its own. Side note: the waiter was quite pushy and overbearing. I was not drinking and said that water was best for me. He offered me several other, non-alcoholic beverages and I declined. He came back to ask me about it again two more times! I went to Oyamel for lunch at noon on a Monday. It was packed. Even though we were able to be seated right away, I would suggest making a reservation just in case. The service was pretty fast and we were able to order our food quickly. If you ordered different dishes, they came out at different times, but we didn't have to wait long. Inside of the restaurant was so cute and chic. The music was great and loud enough to where it wasn't distracting if you were having a conversation. The chips they brought to the table were fresh, but the seasoning they put on the chips made them way too salty. I enjoyed how they made the guacamole fresh on a table in the front area of the restaurant. I ordered a chicken taco and ceviche. The chicken was extremely dry and the tortilla was soggy. I also ordered the ceviche verde. The fish was very fresh, but the verde sauce was again, too salty. The restaurant praises themselves for being authentic. However, food was decent, but definitely not authentic. read more

This review reflects my experience dining out with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that requires me to maintain a diet free of gluten (including cross contact). SERVICE: 3/5 stars DRINKS: 4/5 stars FOOD: 5/5 stars AMBIANCE: 3/5 stars VALUE: 4/5 stars OVERALL RATING: 4/5 stars On Sunday, friends and I brought our book club to Oyamel for brunch. Our nine-person party was seated as we arrived at my favorite location in the restaurant--a large, round table in an alcove off of the main dining room. Our server greeted the first of us who arrived, providing us with water, a separate allergen menu (when I noted that someone in our party had celiac disease), and complimentary tortilla chips. Then... Our server disappeared. As the remainder of my book club trickled in over a 30-minute period, we waited for service (with lots to discuss about this month's book selection, thankfully). Finally, nearly 40 minutes after the start of our reservation, our server returned to take our food and drink orders. For brunch, I had half a basket of those amazing tortilla chips and two tacos. Oyamel has a fryer free of gluten located downstairs, from which they serve chips to diners with celiac disease; the chips from the safe fryer were excellent (though a touch too salty). To accompany my chips, I had the pollo a la parrilla (chicken) and carnitas (pork) tacos; both were decent--overflowing and served on corn tortillas. I did not experience any side effects from cross contact in the two days after eating brunch. As our server took our drink orders concurrent with our food, we only had time for a single beverage. I had a classic mimosa, which was served in a white wine glass. It was a large pour, contained fresh sparkling wine, and tasted as expected. To close our tabs, the server kindly provided individual checks, which were payable through the inKind app. No automatic gratuity or service fee was applied to our checks. While the gap in service prevented our brunch from being a five-star experience, I will return to Oyamel as I know I can eat there safely. Wasn't crazy about the tacos. i had beef and the one with chicken thighs. Chips and Salsa were delicious but $3 . The coffee dessert with bananas was the star of the show. May return just for that. Also would like to try their ceviche and do a tequila tasting in the future. read more
Had an amazing time at Oyamel on Saturday for brunch. The place was rocking. My friend and I were looking for a yummy brunch place after working that morning We didn't have a reservation but were thankful there were spots available at the bar. We settled in and had about 30 minutes before brunch was over. Trenton was the bartender and was rocking it out. We often stopped just to watch him work. He was for the most part behind the bar himself and he was doing an excellent job of balancing making the plethora of drinks that were coming in and taking care of the customers that were sitting at the bar. He is the reason we had such an amazing time. Ok on to the food and drinks. We started with Oyamel Margarita. We were curious about the salt air and it truly is delicious and the perfect pair for the margarita. Our second round was the pomegranate margarita and that was equally delicious. We asked Trenton for food recommendations and he recommended us starting with the Taco de chorizo con papas. We had two each and they were soooooo good. So flavorful and yummy. We were still a bit hungry so decided to order another recommendation - Chilaquiles con chorizo y huevo estrellado. I couldn't stop eating this and we quickly cleaned the plate. I didn't want it to end. It was something about the chorizo and chihuahua cheese and all the other goodness that just blended together so well. Overall, wonderful experience. I went here a couple weeks ago and tried their vegetarian tasting menu! It was delicious and a lot of food! I had to take a couple dishes home but it was definitely worth it. Rich and very flavorful. The service was a bit slow - almost took about 2/2.5 hours for the whole experience but the server was very informed. Otherwise, the place is generally nice. I would have preferred a quieter space to eat but the food was definitely a must try! read more

I feel bad rating this so low but it is what it is. We came here for dinner before a Caps game on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was busy but not slammed, except around the bar so I assume they have a nice happy hour. At one point my friend got up to use the bathroom by the bar, but was told the person inside was going to be there for a while bc they were quite intoxicated which may or may not be the restaurants fault but sheesh. It was literally like 6:30 on a Wednesday. Our server was nice but barely there. I had to ask multiple people to refill our waters and everytime they refilled it, it spilled onto the table and no one tried to wipe it up. Also the two top tables are so narrow and they have you really packed in so it's hard to fit your food and drinks on the table at the same time. We started with the guac, which I think is the main thing to go to Oyamel for. They used to do it table side but now have a dedicated guac making station by the bar which is cool. I think coming for margs and guac is really the only thing worth spending your money on there these days. I got the tamale verde which came out cold which was disappointing. I also did 2 tacos - the fish taco and the cochinita pibil. The fish was spicy but had a very strong fishy taste at the end which made me concerned that it was old fish. Also it tastes like it came frozen and they fry it up, which was disappointing. The other taco was fine, but wasn't my cup of tea. Felt like it needed a sauce or something to balance it out. The bill was super expensive for what we got, especially for the quality being so low. Definitely marking this off my list of places to visit in Chinatown. read more

This is the 6th chef Jose Andres' restaurant I have tried. We ordered the chef's tasting menu which has 7 courses, from appetizer to dessert, it was pretty good. I like the mushroom rice and tacos, the octopus is also very tasty. read more

Oyamel is my least favorite Jose Andres restaurant, I'll explain why. Food: This was a miss for me. The ceviche I ordered felt "deconstructed". Ceviche for me should be homogenous, every bite filled with an explosion of flavors. At Oyamel, you're eating a piece of fish here, and a grapefruit slice there. The steak lacked favor and was impossible to chew for how thinly sliced it was. The enchiladas were okay, the chicken was quite dry. And not pictured, the pumpkin dip had a texture like dog food. For much each plate is charged, it's an absolute abomination. Ambiance: This feels like a typical Jose Andres restaurant with its decor, colors, and lights. This is a redeeming quality, it feels fun to be here. Expect this place to be packed on a weekday evening. Would I come back? Probably not. I'd much rather go to Jaleo or China Chilcano. read more
