Listen, when it's still 95 degrees at 9:30 p.m. in DC, any restaurant requiring outdoor seating only is automatically disqualified. After striking out at two other spots, we landed at Barcelona Wine Bar, and honestly, it ended up being a pretty good save. As expected on a Thursday night, there was a wait for indoor seating, so we did what any reasonable adults would do: grabbed a drink at the bar and waited it out. I started with a Sauvignon Blanc while my friend ordered an espresso martini made with tequila, which was surprisingly delicious. Since we'd already survived happy hour elsewhere and had plans to continue the evening, we responsibly switched to water during dinner. Hydration is self-care, ladies and gentlemen. For food, we ordered the garlic shrimp, crispy mushrooms, chicken thigh, patatas bravas, and branzino. The stars of the evening were definitely the garlic shrimp and the patatas bravas. The chicken thigh was also flavorful and well-prepared. The crispy mushrooms, however, didn't quite do it for us. The flavor itself was good, but there was so much breading that we felt like we were eating the concept of a mushroom rather than an actual mushroom. Now for the plot twist. Everything came out fairly quickly except for the branzino. After waiting about 30 minutes, our server kindly informed us that it would be another 30 minutes before the fish arrived. At that point, we collectively decided that while we enjoy seafood, we do not enjoy it enough to wait an hour for it. So, we politely waved the white flag and called it a night. The service throughout the evening was genuinely good. The hostess was friendly, our server was attentive and communicative, and the bartender was cool despite operating under what appeared to be combat-level crowd conditions. It was packed, so ordering required decisiveness and a strong sense of purpose. The restaurant itself isn't huge, but it's a great size with a lively atmosphere and plenty of outdoor seating--which I'm sure is wonderful during the approximately three weeks of the year when DC weather is actually pleasant. Would I return? Absolutely. I'd just skip the mushrooms, order strategically, and maybe avoid arriving after spending several hours participating in Happy Hour Olympics beforehand. They are a great spot for celebrating a special occasion because of the atmosphere and decor, liveliness, and complimentary desserts and drinks. At our last visit, we were celebrating a graduation and our server made sure our guest of honor felt celebrated. There was something for everyone on the menu, even our pickiest eater. Some of my favorites are the whipped sheep's cheese, croquetas, pork belly, and gambas. And we always order a pitcher of red sangria. :) read more

I came to Barcelona Wine Bar with a few friends for a late dinner and drinks. We made a reservation, but unfortunately still had to wait about 30 minutes before being seated. I also wasn't expecting the restaurant to be as chaotic and overstimulating as it was. The downstairs area was extremely crowded and the music was very loud. Thankfully, we were seated upstairs, which felt more like a traditional dinner setting, although it was still a bit noisy. We started with both the red and white sangrias, and they were honestly delicious. For food, we shared several tapas along with the seafood paella, which was one of the highlights of the meal. The paella tasted very authentic and was full of flavor. Overall, the food and drinks felt true to the Spanish-inspired concept, and the atmosphere did capture the lively wine bar vibe you'd expect to find in Barcelona. While I enjoyed the meal, I think I was just caught off guard by how energetic and loud the environment was. If you're looking for a lively spot for drinks and sharing plates with friends, this is a great option. My experience here was so unfortunate it's funny. D.C has some excellent restaurants so it's shocking this wine bar can stay competitive in this environment. First, a friend made a reservation at least a week in advance for a table of three. We all got there on time, if not a few minutes early. The hostess then told us there was not a table ready for us, and worse, was unable to give us a time estimate on when a table would open up because "we do not time our tables." So what is the point of making a reservation? Hilariously he said we can wait for a table outside instead, but they Won't be turning on the heaters. Happy to know they want us cold and hungry. We ended up waiting by the bar area, which was uncomfortably packed, for a drink while a table opened up. The bartender there was nice and respectful! Eventually, after waiting for some time we got a table inside. It was quite loud in the main room. There were three separate birthday parties. We were glad to start ordering. We ordered the oyster mushrooms, patatas bravas, chicken thighs, seafood paella, and the pork belly. The pork belly had to be comped because they forgot about it until I reminded them over an hour into the dinner. To note, all of the food was lukewarm/cold with the exception of the pork belly because they forgot about it and it was prepared late. Even the paella, which is served on a cast iron, so it has the optics of being piping hot, was actually just warm. The rice felt a little hard. The mushrooms had too much breading in each bite. I enjoyed the green sauce in the chicken. A runner asked if we wanted complimentary bread with our green sauce, which we responded positively towards. But soon after another runner picked up the plate with the sauce and swooped it away. Then the first runner came back with the bread right after, noticeably confused by the lack of sauce. I had some time to kill before an appointment so decided to stop in for happy hour. I've only dined in for dinner and brunch, so was happily surprised to see that they had a happy hour. I was able to snag a table on the patio and it was just perfect weather. Service was very quick and I was able to order pretty fast and receive my food and drinks very quickly. I had a great time, but one area that I found extremely difficult was getting my check. 20 minutes prior before I had to leave, which was 30 minutes after I've been there, I went ahead and just asked for my check since I knew I wasn't going to be ordering anything else. It took 25 minutes to be able to get my check. Following asking for my check, I saw the server print it, bring it out, put it under his arm, and then walk by me to take multiple tables orders that were seated next to me. I was a bit dumbfounded at this, but after giving him my card, the same thing happened with my copy to sign. It was very odd and time consumptive to say the least. Due to this, it took way longer than it should've to get that check, and I was quite literally speed walking out of that restaurant. Pablo was the best server ever! He was very informative, helpful, and accommodating to the parties allergies. To the point where he circled what food could be eaten/be modified/to avoid. He was awesome all around, please give this man a big fat raise. The place was super loud but if you II sit away from the bar (ex. Inside/outside) you can still have a great time. Went on a Thursday with a 9:45 reservation and did not get seated until 10. Do with that what you wish. Regardless the hostess was very nice! Barcelona was okay but has room for improvement. I checked out the menu and other Yelp reviews before visiting. Many of the reviews mentioned the loud music, tightly packed tables, and lukewarm food, which is exactly what I experienced. I don't want to feel like I'm in a club, watch servers barely squeak by my table, or eat room temp food. We visited on Sunday night for a 6 PM reservation. The place was busy but not full, and got a little busier by the time we left around 7:15 PM. There was a small line at the host stand, but people were quickly seated. The host initially took us to a two-top next to a four-top that had a baby in a high chair and some kids books/toys nudging into our table space. We politely asked for a different table, which the host accommodated, but we shouldn't have to ask; they should give guests more space proactively. Our waiter was not particularly friendly or helpful. He asked us about allergies, but did not offer to explain the menu, make recommendations, or anything else. I overheard the waiter at the table next to us telling his table all about the menu and warning them to order any large dishes early, because they can take up to 45 minutes to prepare. We got no such advice; thankfully, we didn't plan to get any large dishes. I do appreciate that the food pacing was pretty good, all the dishes came out quickly and were cleared quickly, and our waiter offered us another piece of bread later (for a dish that only came with one piece and should have come with two...). We got a pitcher of red sangria ($38) which was 4 glasses worth. The sangria tasted fine but was very generic; nothing special, not much fruit, lots of ice. The server who poured it for us did it in a very noisy, distracting way -- shaking it a lot to get the ice to settle, struggling to balance the amount of ice in each glass, spilling some ice on the floor. It was unpleasant and almost comical. We tried eight different tapas dishes: Eggplant Caponata ($7.5), Rainbow Carrots ($8.5), Whipped Sheep's Cheese ($8.5), Cauliflower ($9.5), Grilled Chicken Thigh ($10.5), Bacon-Wrapped Dates ($8.5), Jamon and Manchego Croquetas ($7.5, four pieces), and Lamb Merguez ($10.5). Everything was pretty good. The best dishes were the Sheep's Cheese and Chicken Thigh. The cheese was a nice portion and worked well with the honey. It only came with one piece of bread and should have come with two. Also, although the bread had grill marks on it, it was not warm at all, barely room temperature. The chicken was excellent all around -- tender, salty, spicy, with a very nice green sauce. All the other dishes were ok but had room to improve. The croquetas -- which I love in any form -- had a nice, crunchy exterior and a soft interior that reminded me of mashed potatoes. I wouldn't say they tasted particularly like jamon and manchego, though. The bacon-wrapped dates -- also a favorite dish -- were fine if a bit sweet; the blue cheese on the plate cut this a bit, but I wanted more flavor from the bacon, which was lost against the sweetness of the date. The carrots looked pretty but had different levels of doneness -- some softer or harder than others -- and I wanted more flavor from the sauce. The lamb merguez came with fava hummus and both tasted bland. The eggplant did not have a uniform heat level -- some pieces hot, some room temp -- and I disliked the sauce, which reminded me of sweet BBQ sauce in a negative way. The cauliflower was underwhelming; the sauce needed to be punchier and the dish needed another ingredient, like a few crunchy nuts. I would like to see the restaurant turn down the music, give diners more space, and tweak many of the dishes. It was an okay meal but I wouldn't return. read more

Went there last night for my birthday! Although the overall experience was good, there are reasons why I gave it 4 stars: Location: We visited the Logan circle location and parked in the garage. The entrance is right next to the restaurant, so very convenient ! First impression: VERY BUSY!!! We had reservations for 7:00 and arrived on time, but waited an additional 30 minutes to be seated. There were quite a few people also waiting for a table. We were offered a chocolate truffle during our wait so that was nice ! Overall, we were greeted with a smile by everyone but the wait time could be improved somehow. Music is played throughout the night and it can get a bit loud. I wasn't bothered too much by this, but I can see how it can be a nuisance for some. Lights were dim as well with rustic decor. Tables are small and very close to one another, so be prepared to share your space with everyone there. Food/Service: Our server was wonderful! She greeted us right away with the biggest smile and checked on us throughout the night. Food came out quick! Which was nice too! We tried a few tapas: Charcuterie- Jamón Serrano, chorizo picante, manchego cheese. All very good! Whipped sheep's cheese with honey SO GOOD! Ham and cheese croquetas- Delicious! Great Experience! We stopped into Barcelona wine bar last week and had a great experience! In discussing the food, literally everything we had was wonderful. We had the sheep's cheese, bravas, caponata, dates, carpaccio, bone marrow, croquettes, flank steak, pan con tomate, olives, pork belly and figs. We also had a dirty martini and the sangria as well as a bottle of wine. Quite literally everything we had to eat, and drink was phenomenal, and there was not a singular complaint. We were a huge party, and normally this translates to poor service. However, the service was impeccable. Ambience of Barcelona wine bar is great as well. It's the perfect blend of modern sophistication and comfortability. If you're looking for a great dinner in DC I can't recommend Barcelona wine bar highly enough. It's delicious, fruity and refreshing. My second favorite part is the charcuterie board, with a perfect spread to share that satisfies all taste buds. I loved the olives and the eggplant spread the most. The patatas bravas are noteworthy, too. We ordered ~14 tapas for four people, and ended up with only 10 total. As things failed to come out, we asked to simply cancel them. I'd recommend 2-3 per person overall. The place is huge, and the waiters are definitely doing their best, but I'd recommend a few more runners or servers to avoid some of the bumping, the rushing, or forgetfulness. The way to describe my experience here in one word is chaos. If I were to come here again, it'd be a weekday or afternoon type of thing. I have lived in the DMV for almost all my life and have heard the hype around this place for almost what feels like a decade. And it shows based on how many people were at this restaurant on a Wednesday night! The place was completely packed and extremely loud. May be the loudest restaurant I have ever been to. Sort of felt like we were eating in a nightclub. As for the food, we didn't order too much as we had another reservation to catch afterwards. Got the fried oyster mushrooms and the seafood paella with a glass of white wine recommended to us by our server. The fried oyster mushrooms were ok, but nothing special. It was a bit too greasy to enjoy, especially because for a tapas it was quite a large portion for two. The creamy sauce underneath was pretty good with it though. The paella was a bit disappointing, especially for having to wait 30+ mins for it. It was just very salty and honestly kind of a small portion for two. The first dish was too large and this one was too small! We also got the chocolate cake for dessert and my husband really liked that but it was very sweet and a bit too much for my liking. It was fun to check out but i'm not sure i'll be going back as there are many other restaurants in DC with better food. Second time here this month and it has quickly become a favorite. The food is incredible and the wait staff is extremely knowledgeable on all the ingredients used. We have a gluten free friend in our group and they were extremely attentive to her allergy. Their drinks are very good, love the sangria. We managed to make a reservation about an hour beforehand and they made it work for us. We ordered: 1. House-made focaccia, 2. Mussels, 3. Burnt basque cheesecake, and 4. Wine! The focaccia was good, although a bit too hard/dry. The mussels were great though - surprisingly fresh, leading to a good taste! The burnt basque cheesecake is also a must - perfectly burnt and the right amount of cheese! The service itself was average - the place is too busy for much staff interaction, and they unfortunately forgot to give us utensils for the cheesecake. But Barcelona Wine Bar is still a classic DC experience with lots of music and fun! It is a tough place for a "catch up dinner" though due to the loud music, so just one thing to keep in mind. read more

Fun place with good food and drinks. Stopped by with some friends for an evening drink and some food. I got a mezcal cocktail and my friends got Sangria and a gin drink. The mezcal drink was perfectly balanced with grapefruit and mezcal give a tart and smokey flavor. Food we got potatoes bravas, potato tortilla, asparagus, and grilled squid. All were very good and flavorful my favorite was the squid and potatoes bravas. Both afe well balanced. The squid perfectly cooked tender but not over cooked and we seasoned. The potatoes had a great sauce that added some nice flavor and heat. We also got a beef empanada which is my favorite item on the menu. Its well fried and the beef has great seasoning. Service was great attentive and helpful. And barcelona always has a great part atmosphere whenever I go. read more

Everything here was delicious - the cocktails, cauliflower, crispy oyster mushrooms, bacon wrapped dates, chicken thigh, albondigas, and potatoes were all well enjoyed and next time we plan to explore more of the menu! The staff is attentive and food comes out pretty quick but the inside needs some work: It is SO CROWDED and SO LOUD. My family and I literally opted to sit outside, uncovered in light rain at 7pm rather than sit inside. The noise is unbearable - they play the game of 'people are talking loudly, let's up the music!' Until I was about to check the decibel level. The chairs are all uneven and noticed several tables around were also wobbly. Lastly, they use every last possible freaking space for table and chairs making navigating to go to the bathroom (and without hitting someone with your purse) neigh impossible and you're constantly having to move your chair for staff to walk through. Honestly I think we only had a good experience because we sat outside (in the rain). We could hear the crowd inside whenever the door opened and wouldn't have gone into that nightmare for all the world. Owners - please consider upkeep of your furniture, lowering the volume of the music so it's not a screaming match at a 4 top just to be heard, and making more space to move (especially when staff are just standing and looking around but in your way). Barcelona is always good no matter what location you frequent. I went to this location when I was in town visiting. I was struck by how absolutely packed the bar was - truly, shoulder to shoulder, loud music. I have been to other busy locations, but nothing like this. Ordered: - Charcuterie board with Jamon Serrano, delice de bourgogne, mahon (5/5): Super tasty! We loved the pairing of the cheeses with the ham. - Large plate: paella mariscos (half) (1/5): The rice was so salty is was basically inedible for both of us. Luckily the seafood wasn't just as salty and we could at least pick it all out to eat separately. We told the server that it was too salty but nothing came out of it. Tapas: - Pulpo a la parrilla (5/5): My favorite dish from this place. The octopus was super juicy and flavorful. - Gambas al ajillo (3.5/5): Didn't love The shrimp as much as it felt a bit too oily for me. - Wagyu carpaccio (5/5): All the seasoning and the cream they used on top of the carpaccio (not sure what it is) was delicious. Absolutely worth it. - Patatas bravas (5/5): Another favorite dish of ours. It's the perfect snack and carb to go along with the many other protein-heavy dishes. Snacks Happy Hour: - Chicken thigh (3.5/5): The chicken thigh wasn't very remarkable to us compared to the other small dishes we got, but for a happy hour price it was the perfect space filler. Overall (2/5): We visited Barcelona back September 2024. While the food was very good (except for the paella being disappointingly salty) overall we can't give Barcelona a recommendation due to the poor and unwelcoming service. We were seated earlier than other patrons but we were the last to actually place our order because the server never came over or looked our way even after we tried flagging them. The servers also rarely checked up on us and we had to flag the servers down from across the room several times. There was also an issue from our bill where we were charged for an item we didn't order. Thankfully a server we flagged over was nice and helped us get that fixed. This spoiled an otherwise pleasant dinner and atmosphere, and we probably would give this place a second thought in the future because of that. read more

My favorite favorite spot in all of DC! Must try's are the pickled beets, potato tortilla, patatas brava, prawns, bacon wrapped dates, and of course the paellas! Their sangrias are always a hit also! Went spontaneously with my wife for memorial day and were lucky to grab a small barstool table. Obviously it was busy so it was pretty loud in there but that's just the trade off of eating out sometimes! We got a pitcher of the red sangria which was quite freaking yummy. For food, we got the chicken thigh (incredible, tender and smoky meat with a nice aji verde sauce) and broccolini (very good, stalks were a little tough but did not regret trying as it came with a yummy mustard-y dill-y sauce that I can't remember the name of). We also got the cabra romero cheese (best cheese ive ever had probably. creamy and herby with a goat's milk aftertaste.) and duck prosciutto (stupid good, we're both big fans of duck). The cheese and prosciutto paired insanely well together and I'll be thinking about that for a little while. We're excited to come back the next time we want a nice night out! read more
