There was more right here than wrong, so it gets the fourth star. I'll try to compliment sandwich this review. The first thing you notice when you come in is the vibe. Warm colors, wood accents, friendly staff. Not an overwhelming menu, I always like to see a place that is focusing on core foods and not trying to do too much. The blues may be a little too loud, but blues music is the soundtrack to BBQ food, especially Memphis style, so it's a good fit. I got a two meat combo plate, with ribs, burnt endz, bacon mac and cheese, and dill potato salad. Let's address the lesser aspects so we can end on a high note. The burnt endz. I assume they're spelled with a z in the same way spray can cheese is cheez. I know that there are only going to be so many true burnt ends with bark and tender meat inside per brisket, and so a restaurant is likely going to supplement with chopped point. However, there should not be huge fat caps on most of the cubes, or just cubes of fat. At least having some true burnt ends in an order would be nice too. The mac and cheese I received was delivered lukewarm, and I'm not sure what was up with that, so I didn't eat much of it. Now for the high point finisher! Those ribs man. These things were spectacular, and the light slap of sauce on them was just right to deliver the brown sugar flavor to your mouth without being excessive, or drown out the meat itself. When all these other reviews rave about the ribs being worth a drive, they mean it. Also, the dill potato salad is a win. Not heavy, not slap you with vinegar or mustard, but flavorful with dill and bacon. I scraped the bottom of my bowl to get it all. All in all, worth a visit, and another joint in Colchester that adds to the prestigious food scene that town is building. read more

I came in with a large group and I appreciated the staff's service and attention. Everyone seemed super happy with their food (mine was great). I got to try some of the other dishes, and let me just say that the potato tacos should be a regular staple on the menu. I'd come back for just that! Lots of street parking as well as a small lot, plenty of seating inside and outside, and the order up counter is FANTASTIC for larger groups so we don't have to deal with splitting the check. read more

What a great spot! This restaurant is counter service for both food and drinks. The staff was friendly and attentive, especially for it not being traditional dining service. It was not a large dining area but the quaint ambience and set up of the restaurant would be great for large parties. The portions of meat were very large and well worth the price. Stopped here on our way to a Mohegan concert and were greeted by two very sweet counter girls. We placed our order for food at the counter and then drinks at the bar in the adjacent room. I think this restaurant has over 4 stars solely for the service. The staff was extraordinary from start to finish! This includes where you order food, and the bar. I believe his name is Mike, but he was so attentive & friendly. The food here though lacks that BBQ essence. My husband and I got the combo plate which came with brisket and ribs with a side of their bacon, mac & cheese, and coleslaw. I also ordered the cornbread. The meat itself was very tender, but it arrived at our table cold and lacked flavor. The mac & cheese was pretty good, but you can't really go wrong with mac & cheese. The coleslaw was a bit dry and could use salt and pepper. The cornbread was actually the best part of our meal. It was Very moist and savory, which was unexpected. Tried the nachos on a repeat visit. These are really good but filling. Three of us were filled up with one order topped with burnt ends and two sides. The sides were not as spectacular as the mains. The cornbread is flavorful but dry. The collard greens are tasty but soggy from too much stock. The macaroni and cheese was even passed over by my son who happily would eat Mac and cheese every meal. The potato salad was good but not outstanding. The beans were overly sweet. I always notice the specials on the board on the way out and would be tempted if I saw them before ordering. I am always to full for dessert. The service is friendly and attentive, especially for a counter service restaurant. The beer selection is extensive and great soft drink choices. Very delicious food! This has been on my To Go places for some time after seeing an article on this place. I came in late Saturday afternoon with not too many people. The staff here was very friendly and walked around the dining room greeting everyone. The Mac and cheese was delicious. I typically don't like Mac and cheese but the cheese used here was great. I've eaten BBQ all over this great Nation of ours. I also make my own BBQ and to be honest, my pulled pork is the best I ever had and most will say the same. Anyway to my review of Oz-n-bones..... We ordered Brisket. Tasted like pot roast. Looked like pot roast and smelled like pot roast. 0 of 10 Pulled chicken sandwiches. Tasty. Nice smoke flavor. Nice roll. Not overly greasy. Well done. 7 of 10 Collard Greens. Sweet and spicy. Overly sweet and overly spicy. I won't gripe about their particular recipe. It's not my favorite at all but the greens were properly tender. 6 of 10 Dill Potato Salad. You can taste the ingredients, the dill, the potatoes, the mustard and mayo. Fabulous. 9 of 10 I ordered the coleslaw, they gave me their Mac and cheese. I'm a huge coleslaw fan. I've never had a slaw I didn't like. Their Mac and cheese, not so much. Overly complicated recipe, overly greasy. Not a fan. 2 of 10 Cornbread w/maple butter. Awesome. 10 of 10 Half Crispy chicken. I was told it was smoked then fried. They told me it had a dry rub on it. I ordered it with their original sauce. I didn't receive the sauce. I suppose I could've asked but I didn't. Chicken was tasteless. No smoke flavor to be found. I don't think it was fried, unless it was air fried. If it was smoked and then fried/air fried again, it would explain why the white meat of the breast was so dry it was inedible. The thigh and leg were decently moist but flavorless. 1 of 10 The vibe of this place is terrific. I think if they dial in these recipes and preparation they will have a gold mine. My first review of this place was almost exactly a year ago. At the time I claimed that OzN' Bones probably had the best Mac and Cheese and Best Cornbread in all of New England After reviewing over 120 BBQ spots in this region of this country. Since then I've added more or less 30 more BBQ joints to my list. I recently went back to OzN'Bones (which is something I rarely do, returning to a place) And I can say without a doubt that it is true. In my extensive traveling foodie opinion ... OzN'Bones is the best Mac and Cheese and Best Cornbread I've ever had. I will Also say that although I still have maybe 2 or 3 places in CT that have potential for great BBQ, I feel fairly confident that OzN'Bones is the best BBQ in Connecticut! You can disagree with me all you want but you are wrong, so just don't even try. Besides the Mac being made with more love and creativity than ANY other mac I've ever had Anywhere, AND The cornbread being authentic, buttery, cinnamon honey butter spread all over it! Their ribs are phenomenally good with their own rub, their own sauce, nice juicy tender texture. Best Ribs in CT? Big Maybe (with a grin on my face) Their Cole Slaw, Beans, and Potato Salad are made with love too! You can tell it's their own recipe and not just general "throw it together" crap. Their Maple Bourbon sauce is insane! In all dead honesty the only things that are holding them back from the upper ranks of best BBQ in New England are little general menu item things like how they don't do a traditional sliced Brisket. Or they don't always have a smoked chicken. Or that their sauce (while still amazing) still isn't that apple cider vinegary more liquid-y style that I think is what BBQ really is supposed to be. Or that this Mac and Cheese is kinda treated like their bread and butter and it looks like its offered with over half their menu, with Bowls and Plates and stuff like you Have to get the mac and cheese (which I agree, you do). But I would still say it's CT's best BBQ, I just don't want a super traditional BBQ dude going in there thinking they'll have all the super traditional options. Our favorite local BBQ place! The food is always delicious. They regularly post their specials on Facebook and they are worth checking out! The most recent visit I had smoked chicken taquitos and jumbo smoked wings, brisket and mac-n-cheese. Go for the food and make sure to check out the bar, local beers and wines always available. It's an older building so the interior has lots of warm wood and there's outdoor seating in the summer. Take out is also an option and look for their food truck at your local brewery. Oz 'n Bones is the best BBQ within 30 miles of here. The menu items are creative and the food is cooked fresh. You won't find anything like it anywhere else. I've tried many different dishes. The meats are to die for - especially burnt ends, brisket, ribs and pulled pork. I love their sandwiches especially the Mac Attack which is a layer of Bacon Mac n Cheese, choice of meat, and cheddar cheese on a potato roll. They also make their own sauces which I love pouring all over my food. Even the sides are great. I have yet to try something here that didn't impress me. They offer gluten free options and have menu items that go far beyond standard barbecue fare. It is clean inside and boasts a large dining area. You order your food at the counter when you first walk in and they alert you when it's ready. They also have a separate bar for ordering drinks and have a great selection. Be sure to tip the bartender - the staff / owners are very friendly and accommodating. In my opinion, this is the best restaurant in Colchester. read more

I had them crumble up some cornbread for me for the bottom of mine and with the mac and cheese and pulled pork on top, it was a winning combo instantly. After hearing rave reviews we had to give this place a try. Got take out. True barbecue abs not just food smothered with sauce. Love the original BBQ sauce. Brisket was perfection. Pulled pork another hit, although a bit greasy. Slaw was nice (vinegar based with a bit of seasoning and a bite of onion) and dill potato salad (red potatoes with a vinegar dill base)was good. Corn bread with maple butter was yummy, don't skip- easily shared between 2 people. Would love a sampler plate! That way we could have tried everything and find our favorites for next time. We also loved that the Togo containers and utensils were all eco-friendly! This is an additional cost for sure, but greatly appreciated! Friendly staff, but beer guy wasn't too friendly. My wife and our friends went for the first time and were surprised by the amount of food you get what ever you order. I had the full rack of ribs and can say they were tasty, but wish they were a little more smoked so they would fall off the bone. While we've been eating dinner here for a while now, we just tried the Saturday Brunch and it was delicious! I had the Oz's Eggs Benedict with bacon. The cornbread was moist and flavorful and I loved every bite. I paired it with a side of the brisket hash which was also quite tasty. We live in town and use to visit this barbecue place when it was just a food truck. We were really excited to see that it is now a actual building. Their meat is always super smoky and moist. We were having a mini family reunion and ordered the food from OzN'Bones. We had never eaten there but took the chance based on recommendations from friends. So glad we did! Pick up was easy and the staff so friendly. The food was great and just enough for leftovers the next day. We almost over ordered on the ribs but Diane called and recommended half of our original order. Perfect! It's refreshing to deal with a caterer who understands proportions and we felt Diane really was looking out for us. We will definitely be going back to eat at the restaurant.
