Our first time eating here and we weren't disappointed. We got one of the daily specials. That day was chicken tenders and pop corn shrimp with 2 sides and a bread. We ordered sweet tea. The portions were good, the food was yummy, the only complaint was my son said the potato salad was not good at all and was too dry. The tables weren't super clean but I'm pretty sure we came in following a rush and it wasn't anything drastic. Service was so/so, but possibly just an off day. Fried flounder was raw! Green beans, corn and pinto beans are from a can and no seasoning. Waitress was very nice and tried to make it better but I ordered the chop BBQ and BBQ slaw. Slaw tasted sour and the chopped BBQ was dry. Tables and floor were dirty and the AC was freezing cold. Staff member was wearing a t-shirt with a picture of the Grimm reaper on it. Everything could improve & I hope it has! A relative referred this place to my Mom & I a cpl yrs ago so we tried it out! We didn't want to order anything very expensive so we both ordered hamburger steaks & fries. We were served "crumbs!" Yes! The crumbs that are in the bottom of the bag!! And pieces of scraps of hamburger crumbs that were hard bc they had been left in the grease!!! When asked how our meal was, we told them & showed management our plates!! We were looking for someplace to grab something to eat in the area before we drove back home. We initially had another place picked out but it was closed for some reason even though the hours on the door and Yelp said they should be open. We decided to check out Pa-Paw's BBQ as our second choice. We arrived about 4:30pm on a Saturday. My wife's initial reaction was that she did not want to go to diner and this felt like a diner. They told us we could sit where we liked and someone was behind us with menus. The main area where you enter has a counter and register on the left with the kitchen behind it. There are a few tables to the right and booths along a hallway to the right of that. All the booths appeared full so we kept walking toward the back of restaurant. There was another room after the booths with most tables occupied and another room after that where we found a table. It appears this place has had several additions over the years. We were provided menus and offered drinks. We perused the menu and my wife had to order the hush puppies. Since we moved to the Southeast they are something new she really likes and we always are on the lookout for them. She also ordered the chef salad with ranch dressing. I decided to try the double cheeseburger with bacon and onion rings. The hush puppies arrived first and my wife really enjoyed them. A short while later the rest of our food arrived and looked good. Although her salad was good, my wife is not fond of iceberg lettuce. Unfortunately, it was iceberg as she expected it would be. My burger was delicious. The onion rings were good but did not have a lot of flavor. They also had a much thicker breading coating than we are used to. Although we did not try their BBQ which is their namesake, the food hit the spot and the prices were very reasonable. However, the building and interior could really use some freshing up, time and attention. The carpet is worn out and the ceiling tiles have a lot of stains. read more

The lowdown: An old school, down home, southern feeling restaurant with tasty, inexpensive food, southern fresh sweet tea and hospitality! While driving back to Raleigh from touring Appalachian State with a couple hungry teenage boys I turned to my YELP community to find some recommendations in the Wilkesboro area. The boys loved the name so we knew we had at least try it out. Driving up to the building I became a little nervous. It most certainly is off the beaten path and looks as though it could use a face lift, but based on the amount of cars there, I knew they must be doing something right. We walked in, sat down and our waitress promptly came over. We asked her for recommendations which she gladly gave us. I had read that the wings were great here so of course that was the first thing that was ordered. I had a Buffalo chicken wrap w buffalo chips and hush puppies, my son had wings, my friend and her son opted for the BBQ Plates, fried okra and onion rings. our food was served quickly, everything was delicious. Disgraceful: first the waitress left me on hold, then they messed up the hotdogs. They were supposed to be footlong but weren't. out in the hills with the cutest of chicks looking for a little relief and some pretty colors on the parkway... traffic was slammed so we turned to the east for the slow crawl homeward. got to needing snacks and petrol at about the same time so we Yelped sustenance while topping off which put us here... coming into Wilkesboro from the north Pa-Paw's BBQ looks the part: small town roadside eatery with an assortment of working class cars in the lot, so totally rural. coming in the main room is full-up with people in various stages of plague-compliance getting take-out but there's plenty of room for dine-in. it's seat yerself so we found a table in the back dining room and got menus, coffee, and waters. took a look at the menu and decided to go with the Saturday special and MLB had the flounder plate. we get fed not too much later. Flounders, baked potato, slaw, and hush puppies for MLB, my plate subs popcorn shrimps and deviled crab (served in the crab!) for the extra fish. the slaw was greener and chopped-er than any I'd ever had, and the tater and the hush puppies represented well as well; no complaints but nothing to gush over either. the deviled crab is baked and served in the crab which is kinda scary but actually quite good (but still scary), took my fish home because it seemed prudent and makes lunch easy, and who doesn't like scores of little shrimps drizzled with cocktail sauce? overall we were satisfied with our meals but we passed on dessert due to the influx of non-compliant locals (must be something in the water enhances immunity) I've never put much stock in public health crises but I pride myself on prudence. the powers that be aren't asking much: it's no big deal to cover up and practice basic hygiene. read more

Pa-Paw's is a small, slightly worn looking place, a 1/2 mile or so off D Street. The inside is no less worn, a little dark, but clean and warm feeling, with friendly, efficient service. The walls are loaded with NASCAR posters & pictures, old ads, etc. The Chopped Barbecue Sandwich was large, loaded with tender, moist, smokey barbecued pork. The pork is very lightly sauced out of the kitchen, and is really a hybrid style, neither Eastern or Lexington.This is much better BBQ than I expected, and I would definitely order it again, perhaps add a touch more sauce, ot hot sauce. The Chili Dog was just ok - the chili is a little on the sweet side, and is rather watery This is not a dog I'd try again. All in all, a nice experience. read more

I really enjoyed my visit here and being able to enjoy Western North Carolina BBQ and all of the sides that Pa-Paw's had available. Everything I tried was awesome and tasty as I could have stayed here all day and tried everything on the menu. This prices here are great for all of the food you get and you can order and do not have to worry about a big bill. The service here is great and friendly as they really know how to take care of their guests and will go out of their way to make sure you are having the best possible experience. It is a very busy place so it obviously appeals to many. The service was very good for how busy they were. I ordered the chopped pork barbecue with a baked potato and hush puppies. The hush puppies are worth the trip but even though I ate six bites of the pork, I tried hard, I am a big woman, I just really disliked it. That is my opinion and I am not saying it is bad, just not to my taste. The person I was with ordered the veggie plate and enjoyed it. On our way to choose and cut our Christmas tree in Laurel Springs, we stopped here for lunch and were greeted warmly and served with a smile. A small-town family restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised to find everything clean, fresh, and hand-battered when you place your order. We indulged in fried mushrooms, tiny taters (potato wedges with a nice spice!), and onion rings. We ordered a variety of lunches and shared them, so we got to try the BBQ, fried shrimp, and chicken tenders, and enjoyed them all hot and fresh. I would return just for the juicy breaded chicken (choice of dipping sauce--I had ranch and buffalo--both tasty!), but everyone at the table had their own favorite flavor they wanted to return for, whether it was the onion rings, fried mushrooms, crispy breaded shrimp, or the BBQ. Cole slaw is fine chopped but not mushy. Perfect ratio to mayonnaise. BLT was awesome! Served on toasted Texas toast with leaf lettuce, tomato and lots of bacon! Crinkle fries are hot. Chicken strips are fresh not frozen and are hand breaded in house with a very light and crisp crust. I think the best chicken strips we've ever had!
