The lowdown: An old school, down home, southern feeling restaurant with tasty, inexpensive food, southern fresh sweet tea and hospitality! While driving back to Raleigh from touring Appalachian State with a couple hungry teenage boys I turned to my YELP community to find some recommendations in the Wilkesboro area. The boys loved the name so we knew we had at least try it out. Driving up to the building I became a little nervous. It most certainly is off the beaten path and looks as though it could use a face lift, but based on the amount of cars there, I knew they must be doing something right. We walked in, sat down and our waitress promptly came over. We asked her for recommendations which she gladly gave us. I had read that the wings were great here so of course that was the first thing that was ordered. I had a Buffalo chicken wrap w buffalo chips and hush puppies, my son had wings, my friend and her son opted for the BBQ Plates, fried okra and onion rings. our food was served quickly, everything was delicious. Even if my son doesn't go to Appalachian State, I will be returning back here to try other southern cooking in their menu!

out in the hills with the cutest of chicks looking for a little relief and some pretty colors on the parkway... traffic was slammed so we turned to the east for the slow crawl homeward. got to needing snacks and petrol at about the same time so we Yelped sustenance while topping off which put us here... coming into Wilkesboro from the north Pa-Paw's BBQ looks the part: small town roadside eatery with an assortment of working class cars in the lot, so totally rural. coming in the main room is full-up with people in various stages of plague-compliance getting take-out but there's plenty of room for dine-in. it's seat yerself so we found a table in the back dining room and got menus, coffee, and waters. took a look at the menu and decided to go with the Saturday special and MLB had the flounder plate. we get fed not too much later. Flounders, baked potato, slaw, and hush puppies for MLB, my plate subs popcorn shrimps and deviled crab (served in the crab!) for the extra fish. the slaw was greener and chopped-er than any I'd ever had, and the tater and the hush puppies represented well as well; no complaints but nothing to gush over either. the deviled crab is baked and served in the crab which is kinda scary but actually quite good (but still scary), took my fish home because it seemed prudent and makes lunch easy, and who doesn't like scores of little shrimps drizzled with cocktail sauce? overall we were satisfied with our meals but we passed on dessert due to the influx of non-compliant locals (must be something in the water enhances immunity) I've never put much stock in public health crises but I pride myself on prudence. the powers that be aren't asking much: it's no big deal to cover up and practice basic hygiene.

Pa-Paw's is a small, slightly worn looking place, a 1/2 mile or so off D Street. The inside is no less worn, a little dark, but clean and warm feeling, with friendly, efficient service. The walls are loaded with NASCAR posters & pictures, old ads, etc. The Chopped Barbecue Sandwich was large, loaded with tender, moist, smokey barbecued pork. The pork is very lightly sauced out of the kitchen, and is really a hybrid style, neither Eastern or Lexington. This is much better BBQ than I expected, and I would definitely order it again, perhaps add a touch more sauce, ot hot sauce. The Chili Dog was just ok - the chili is a little on the sweet side, and is rather watery This is not a dog I'd try again. All in all, a nice experience.

We were headed straight for…read moreone of our favorite restaurants in Blowing Rock and then on the way I said, nope, starting now we are venturing out more like we used to. New experiences this next year and starting now! I searched online while the hubby drove and came up with this spot. I ordered the three-meat plate which included two sides and hushpuppies, and my husband ordered the fish and chips (shocker-Brit!), which also included two sides of his choice. He raved about the piece of fish and after taking a bite, I had to agree. A nice thick piece and the breading was just right. Nice fries as well. I didn't try the beans but my husband enjoyed them. I wasn't as enamored with the meats I received. They were just ok as Q goes, lacking any smoke flavor or crunchy bits like I prefer. The sauces were delicious though and while I'm not usually much of a sauce person I enjoyed them and as a result enjoyed the meats. The slaw and collards I had were again just ok. Points for being house-made, but I adore cole slaw and this slaw is a bit dry and needs some oomph. A little Duke's and ACV would make this amazing. A nice crunch and chop is already there but I would tweak it a bit. The collards were cooked perfectly and tasty but again, ACV is needed. Maybe even just add it to the sauce mixes on the table, so folks can doctor their dishes if desired? Why a photo of the silverware you ask? I was so happy to get real silverware and heavy, substantial pieces! It elevates my experience, just me maybe. As I was grabbing a few more photos of the bistro I noticed a nice bourbon selection, and being a bourbon aficionado I had to get closer. I had a nice chat with the owner, who explained a special weekly event he does for folks to try some premium grade liquors at cost and even went on to explain that he makes most of his infusions and mixes in house. Big points for that. I only wish we didn't live over an hour away, but maybe we can get back for some cocktail events at some point. I would/will definitely return and try some other menu items. Service was great, cleanliness is clearly high on their list, and everyone was just super nice.

On a recent trip, my wife and I stopped in and had burgers and fries, about as straightforward as it gets. Was it the best burger we've ever had? No. Was it the worst? Not even close. It was pretty decent. Not especially memorable, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. The inside was a little smoky from the fryer or grill top, so we decided to sit outside. Even though it was warm, it turned out to be a pretty decent day for it. The staff was friendly, including to our dog, which is always a plus. Overall, it was cheap, filling, and perfectly fine for what it is. We would go back. Also, we didn't even ask for extra fries, but the waitress brought us extra fries because she thought there was not enough served with our burger! To those about to nosh, we salute you.

Our most recent visit was this past Friday night and we ordered from the Valentine's Special menu. I won't go into great detail on the food because it wasn't any worse than other times but appetizer was basically a raw battered onion and husband's steak was a really small portion (about half the size of mine) and it was almost all fat & grizzle. We did not complain or send it back. We've never had outstanding food here but it's in a convenient location and it offers typical American fare: meat and 2 sides. Husband loved his sides: Cole Slaw & Baked Sweet Potato and the Cinnamon Sugar Butter that comes with it and the hot rolls. Restaurant overall wasn't really that busy but we were sitting in the bar and the dining room waitresses had a lot of drink orders so our waitress (the only person manning the bar) was extremely busy. She was really good for our service though. We have always sat in the bar when we eat here so I cannot speak to dining in the restaurant and waitress service out there. Vibes in bar area are typical with plenty of TVs playing different sporting events. Million dollar question: Will we return? Answer: Probably. If we're in the area and in need of something more than fast food then we will likely stop in and sit in the bar area like always. If the service is bad, we'll likely leave (btw We've never had bad service) If the food is bad and we're in a crunch for time (which we usually are), we'll just not eat it. If we ever have time to spare, we might send it back for correction or just ask to have it taken off the bill. There's no need to make a scene or be rude to staff.

I was initially a little concerned since we were the only people in the restaurant at 7:00 p.m., but that worry quickly faded. The atmosphere was quiet, and service was prompt and attentive. I ordered the 16-oz ribeye, which was cooked perfectly. The only drawback was that it could have used a bit more seasoning. Bar drinks were on point, though the draft selection was limited to just one local beer. Overall, a solid local spot with good food and strong drinks.

The number of times we have ordered to go for and the orders be wrong, shorted, items left out…read morecompletely, cooked wrong, overcharged, and various other issues is insane. I try not to complain especially for places we have always been partial to. But when an order is called in and it is plainly stated what is wanted and that the person would order something else if said item is unavailable to be tossed in the sauce and the person is reassured they have it then you expect it to be right. Tonight we had inedible fries, 3 half filled ranch cups to split between all 3 orders of fries, an appetizer of fried pickles, potato wedges, an 6 pc chicken tenders and it was reiterated that both orders needed extra ranch. The chicken was not tossed in the sauce and the sauce wasn't even provided for the chicken tenders. It's all pulled into one plate with no dividers so everything you order gets coated in whatever sides you ordered. The last few times we said we wouldn't order again but we really wanted things to be better because we used to really love it here. Out of the 5 people eating tonight nobody was satisfied and we are at work so we just have to deal with it. Truly disappointed that I have to even leave this review, but the last few times we tried to have things addressed it was met with little concern and/or "oh I'm sorry" but then repeating the same issue again. Let me edit to give credit where credit is due: Went back for correction on one of the plates and they remade it with no issues about it. I still stand by my 1 star just because this has became a consistent issue and the cost of gas running back and forth adds up. We hope maybe in the future if we give it another go then our score can increase and things will be better. We do understand being busy and things being overwhelming but if it is consistently too overwhelming to maintain quality then there may need to be adjustments made somewhere. If you do order just be sure to make sure everything is correct before you leave the best you can. Unfortunately in our situation it's usually a few people at work ordering and a 3rd party picking up
