    Rare Roast Beef Sandwich
    Ruth C.

We went to Dooleys for dinner and enjoyed our meals. They have a big menu with a lot of choices: sandwiches, many many burgers, stuffed burgers, speciality grilled cheese and more! We had the potato skins and fried wontons as appetizers. Wow! Both were really good and I could have made a meal out of just the potato skins! They were huge, had lots of potato in them and lots of toppings! My husband and the roast beef and said it was very good. I had a fired egg burger... it was ok. I think I'd try something different next time. Tuesday is also music bingo night! That was a blast and I got a bingo! The prize was a $5 gift certificate for Dooleys. Fun place to go. Staff is great. Atomosphere is nice. You can sit inside or outside. They do have a firepit to enjoy on cool evenings.

This place is delightful! Great location in the heart of downtown with nice outdoor seating - and plenty of room inside too. The homemade chips were our favorite by far, they were perfection. We didn't get to try the cocktails, but we plan to be back! The menu offers lots of options, including vegetarian/vegan and gluten free. It's great have so many options! Our waitress was friendly and did a great job. The food came out quickly, nice and hot. If you have time, make sure to walk up the block to The Book Room, the cutest local bookstore! I can see why this a town favorite, absolutely worth a visit if you are in Wilkesboro

Hangman's Rare Roast Beef* size small

What a delicious spot! My husband and I both opted for the hangman's rare roast beef. I got the small and he got the large. The small is about the size of a burger and the large is HUGE!!! My husband eats all and he could only finish half! The horseradish is delicious and the roast beef is tender and so fresh. I loved the French fries, which have to be hand cut! The little girls loved their hotdogs and were asking for seconds. The environment is casual, laidback, bar type environment with indoor and outdoor seating. Kid friendly! Our waiter was so kind and helpful! Definitely a must visit while in wilkesboro.

I've been here three times and had a great experience every time. Most recently stopped in for a little break from Merlefest, some AC and dinner. We were seated immediately -- they have both indoor and outdoor seating. Their menu is extensive -- it will take you awhile to get through it! Best thing for me is that you can get about anything on the menu gluten free! They also have a whole display case of desserts that are all gluten free! Husband had to order a burger because the host told us they grind the meat fresh. I ordered a club sandwich on GF bread and sweet potato fries. Unfortunately my sandwich came out with mayo all over it but waitress noticed immediately and took it back. Big glasses of ice water with lemon were great on a hot day. They also have an extensive beer menu -- we were there the night before for beers on the patio, again with great service. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Wilkesboro.

Food was amazing and good price! Would come again service was excellent and fast. The ambiance was great and cozy

My go to place to eat when in the WILKESBOROs of NC's NW foothills. Locally farm to table beef. Can't be beat. The small hamburger is plenty the medium and especially the large and one will probably take home a portion. And the old time atmosphere and charm make for a nice dining EXPERIENCE.

Can't believe all these nay naysayers who only leave negative comments. Didn't their moms ever teach them if you can 't say anything nice- shut up? Really sad. Had a great lunch grilled chicken salad here today. Also enjoyed a Sweet Josie Brown here, nice Brown ale out of Raleigh.

New experiences this next year and starting now! I searched online while the hubby drove and came up with this spot. I ordered the three-meat plate which included two sides and hushpuppies, and my husband ordered the fish and chips (shocker-Brit!), which also included two sides of his choice. He raved about the piece of fish and after taking a bite, I had to agree. A nice thick piece and the breading was just right. Nice fries as well. I didn't try the beans but my husband enjoyed them. I wasn't as enamored with the meats I received. They were just ok as Q goes, lacking any smoke flavor or crunchy bits like I prefer. The sauces were delicious though and while I'm not usually much of a sauce person I enjoyed them and as a result enjoyed the meats. The slaw and collards I had were again just ok. Points for being house-made, but I adore cole slaw and this slaw is a bit dry and needs some oomph. A little Duke's and ACV would make this amazing. A nice crunch and chop is already there but I would tweak it a bit. The collards were cooked perfectly and tasty but again, ACV is needed. Maybe even just add it to the sauce mixes on the table, so folks can doctor their dishes if desired? Why a photo of the silverware you ask? I was so happy to get real silverware and heavy, substantial pieces! It elevates my experience, just me maybe. As I was grabbing a few more photos of the bistro I noticed a nice bourbon selection, and being a bourbon aficionado I had to get closer. I had a nice chat with the owner, who explained a special weekly event he does for folks to try some premium grade liquors at cost and even went on to explain that he makes most of his infusions and mixes in house. Big points for that. I only wish we didn't live over an hour away, but maybe we can get back for some cocktail events at some point. I would/will definitely return and try some other menu items. Service was great, cleanliness is clearly high on their list, and everyone was just super nice.

At first glance, the place is very run down, it has the old southern diner feel, but I don't think they have enough employees to keep the place up 100%. Our waitress was very very nice, she was having to wait on folks and go back to wash dishes since they don't have a dishwasher (at the time of me posting this anyways). Half the seating was closed off and the lights dimmed. Aside from the scenery of the place, this is the type of restaurant you'd take your southern grandma too and she'd love it. You have all these southern dishes to choose from!! I was personally excited to see they serve liver mush sandwiches, so that's what I got. I added egg to mine and it was not expensive at all. It was very basic but gosh was it yummy. I also had a side of tropical fruit which came with pineapple, papaya, and peaches. All of that plus a sweet tea totaled to about 10 dollars. I tipped generously because I felt bad that they had no help. I truly do think this place could be buzzing with business, they just need the employees/help to do it. If you're in the area, I do suggest you go in and try the food, while the ambience/scenery isn't the greatest, you will be served with a smile and get some delicious southern home cooking. I wish the owners the best of luck.

Wait staff was VERY polite and hard working, which makes a review like thus one hard to write, but which kicks this one to two stars. The server would hardly speak to me and even my husband commented that he didn't know what her issue was with me specifically. They were out of their daily special of chicken dumplings because the other table apparently ordered the last bowl so we had to pivot, which wa fine. We ordered a mozzarella stick appetizer, a bacon cheeseburger and fries, a chicken club and fries, and a regular hotdog "all the way" with fries. We also all 3 had tea. My son and I got 1 scoop of ice cream each at the end. The girl who scooped the ice cream was way over to us than our server was. The sandwiches seemed to be pretty good, the fries were good, my hot dog was the worst hotdog I've ever had. There was so much mayo (which I don't think usually comes on a hotdog all the way but each place is different) that all I could taste was the mayo and bread. The bread was hard on one side, the hot dog was tiny and over cooked to where it was tough. Our total was right at $70. We would have went to Applebees or Olive Garden if we had anticipated spending $70 on a lackluster dinner that I didn't even eat but half of and the server never even asked if everything was okay. All in all everything would have been fine if the hot dog hadn't been inedible and if the price wasn't that of a chain sit down restaurant

Merle's has a handful of NC drafts as well. My first visit to Merle's was in 2023 in April. The cocktails consumed were balanced and well concocted. The use of the space, which I remember visiting when it was an antiques shop 'back in the day', was well used and the patio area quite niece. Every time after when we would visit town my wife and I would try to make it to Merle's, unfortunately we kept lucking out!
