I don't even know where to begin but here goes. I had zero experience with any type of flooring. One of the first shops for floorings we visited was PHF. We noticed right away how gorgeous the selection was and the store had the samples displayed nicely. Monica the sales rep was extremely helpful with explaining different kinds of wood grades and finishes. She let us take home samples and was never pushy. Long story short we visited many other stores thereafter to see what was out there. Some had reasonable prices. I just couldn't get my heart set on the color no matter which store I went. Then I finally picked a floor and even almost hired another company to do the flooring. Not fully satisfied with the flooring I had selected at another store I went back to PHF and after many days Of trying out samples again I finally selected a wood. I fell in love with it but it was slightly more expensive than my budget. This was because it was prime grade with fewer to no knots. No other flooring stores carry this premium grade flooring. My heart was set on it and decided to go with it but Jay insisted he would get me a sample box at no cost just to make sure I would be 100% happy with it. When it arrived I was even more in love!! It was the most beautiful flooring ever. Now that I had selected the flooring and not happy with who I had selected to install the flooring with, I hesitantly called Monica and asked if Jay would come by and give me an estimate. I say hesitantly because I had a budget in mind and because Jay has done such high end work and even flooring for Nike stores I assumed he would be way out of my budget. When he came over he was extremely professional, knowledgeable and straight forward and the best thing was that his quote fit my budget!!!! He was the first one that I felt ease with and I told him right away that I wanted to hire him. We hadn't moved into the new house just yet but I gave Jay a short notice and he completed the flooring before our move in date. Not only that but I had told him to lay out the wood in a particular orientation. The guys had already started the job and laid out a few planks. My husband did not like the orientation. Without a fuss jay had his guys redo it in record time. I don't know how else to say this but he is the BEST!!! There is literally no other that is more professional and one that actually cares about his customers than just making money. I wish his entire staff who is amazing so much success. They are decent, honest people who love what they do and take pride in their work. The guys that came to install the flooring were so sweet and respectful. We needed our entire home's second floor flooring refinished - which was a big job. It required moving out all of the furniture in the five bedrooms to be refinished. Jay and his amazing crew came in and removed all of the old plywood and vinyl flooring and then beautifully refinished the original 1931 hardwood flooring. Could not be happier with the experience. The crew was here for six days and a few hours on a seventh day to replace all of the furniture to where it belonged. Always prompt, courteous and professional best describes this company. Pacific Hardwood recently installed over 1600 sf of hardwood in our home and we couldn't possibly be any happier with the entire experience or give enough praise to Jay and his crew! After several months of searching and even starting the process with another company that turned out to have misrepresented the installer's qualifications as well as the character of two different floors we picked out, I was wary of both the process and hesitant to trust anyone. So the day I walked into Pacific Hardwood to just look around, I wasn't expecting much, yet ended up being really impressed with Jay. He recognized my hesitation and instead of being either arrogant or pushy, he was able to get a clear understanding of what we were looking for and to direct us to a few of the best options. He knows his flooring material and finishes and he knows which manufacturers have the better quality, value and overall customer satisfaction. Even though I was initially impressed with Jay, once we decided on a floor we liked, I wanted to check with the manufacturer to confirm a few things about the material we were choosing for Pacific Hardwood to install. I expected confirmation on a few minor characteristics and maintenance of the floor. What I didn't expect when I mentioned where we found the flooring was an unsolicited, emphatic statement by this manufacturer, "Jay is one of the best installers in Southern California!" At this moment and given my previous experiences, all of my fears or uncertainties in going forward completely evaporated. I trusted Jay implicitly and he didn't disappoint. Cost is important so let me break it down as best as I can to help others understand why just comparing per square foot costs among companies/installers can be deceiving. The easy part of the equation is the actual cost of the flooring. This is apples to apples. Jay's cost was competitive and fell within 50 cents higher or lower per square foot of other places yet I never considered using different people for purchase and installation as the potential headaches dealing with shipping, delivery, defects in material, etc aren't worth the hassle. Installation quotes varied wildly and this is where, after much education of the process, I found Jay's cost to be extraordinarily reasonable. What I didn't understand when I first started looking for wood floors is that many quotes are for installation only and include only the most basic of floor preparation with everything else such as moving furniture, glue, necessary leveling, grinding concrete, etc. added to the cost. What I also didn't initially understand were the intricacies involved in properly preparing a subfloor so as to preserve the manufacturer warranty. Jay came to our house, looked at the condition of the subfloor, pointed out where we needed a little extra attention to properly prepare, explained why and quoted accordingly. Something else that impressed me was that he charged nothing additional to remove 65 square feet of tile in a room we decided to include at the last minute. Additionally, when our kitchen needed several extra bags of leveling compound and an extra half day to prepare, he didn't charge more. He stuck to his initial quote. Another vital aspect of installing a wood floor like ours (mid toned European Oak) with color and grain variation is to have a qualified installer (many of Jay's installers have been with him for years) sort through the material and lay it out so that the floor is cohesive in appearance once fully installed. I was expecting 5 to 6 boxes of the floor to be opened at one time, sorted and placed. What I got instead, especially after I mentioned that I didn't particularly like the darkest shade in some of the boards, was that the installers opened all 1600 square foot of material and organized into piles before any material was laid down. Once they assessed how to best use the available boards so that all rooms would flow well, they fully laid out a room at a time for my approval before gluing anything down. PROS: Professional, knowledgeable, courteous, on time and efficient, long-time well trained installers, very reasonably priced, attention to detail, and take extreme pride in making sure the customer is going to be happy with the finished job. I'm rewriting this review since I was personally attacked as a customer. Jay has been late with his estimate. When I finally got the estimate, I asked for solid maple threads for my staircase. He never replied to my request as this probably required work on his part to get solid threads. Since Jay could not provide solid threads for the staircase, I asked to separate estimate for loft from other work. (I want my staircase done the way I want it) He separated the estimates, but upon finding out I only want to do loft backed off from the work. A few suggestions for the business: 1. Please feel free to reply with the emails of our communication. There is nothing there I would want to hide, as I was transparent in my requests. 2. Be more responsive and timely with your customers. 3. Be more transparent with your minimum square footage requirements; post it on your site, or inform the customer right away. 4. Do not attack the integrity of your customers, that will not work well for your business. You are supposed to serve the customer, not the other way around. This is just a friendly advice; I wish you luck in the future. read more

We purchased the hardwood from Pacific Hardwood Flooring but did not choose them for the installation (my brother is a general contractor with 30 years experience, so I went with his installation guy who did a superb job). PROS: We loved the quality and look of our hardwood floor choice we purchased from Pacific Hardwood. BEAUTIFUL. CONS: The custom-ordered bullnosing for our hardwood staircase did NOT match the planks. When I contacted Jay, he was NOT service-oriented in any of his responses: - First, he fobbed me off to contact the supplier directly; I said that I bought from him directly so expected him to resolve this. - He blamed my installer, saying he should be able to stain to match. So, I then I asked why I paid for a "custom order" to match the planks. Jay defensively stated that if his guys had been hired to do the install, it would be a perfect match. - Then he said it's up to us to choose adjacent planks that best match the nosing. I explained that the planks have a wood-smoked gray tone and the bullnose was an orange-tan tone - NONE of the planks matched the color of the bullnosing. We are taking the bullnose to someone else to restain to custom-match our hardwood floor (not easy when you have to sand and re-stain to match a unique finish). Perhaps at the time of ordering, Jay should have explained that the bullnosing would need to be custom-stained after delivery by the installer. read more

This business is just unquestionably shady. After reviewing options, my wife and I narrowed down to two engineered flooring choices that we liked. However, my wife is pregnant, and it's important to us that any product we purchase does not contain harmful products (and is ethically sourced). I think this is a reasonable concern, especially given that Lumber Liquidators recently settled a massive class action and were forced to admit that they had been lying to consumers about the amount of unsafe formaldehyde their flooring products contained that were made in China. When I returned to the Pacific Hardwood showroom to return the two samples, I asked who they were manufactured by so that my wife and I could do more research. The owner refused to say. It was only then that I noticed that all of the branding/manufacturer information on the flooring products in the showroom has been removed, such that customers can't identify what the product is they are buying. The owner stated that he "wasn't sure" who made the flooring. When pressed, he said that "if he told customers who made the product they might go online and shop around." Indeed. At that point I had had enough, and told him that we were not going to purchase through him if we didn't know what we were buying -- he then said "fine, I'm not going to tell you!" Needless to say, I left. Not sure about everybody else, but when I make a $30,000+ purchase, I want to know what I am buying, and am not going to rely solely on a salesman's representations. There are way too many good options in LA for a business to operate like this, and I can only assume they get away with it because most people don't buy floors very often and are relatively uninformed. One word: AMAZING! Jay and his team at Pacific Hardwood were top notch from getting the estimate to the finished project. One doesn't always get to see the amount of work that goes into getting a hardwood floor installed, and we fortunately were able to see everything from start to finish. We had 3/4 inch hardwood installed into 5 bedrooms and had our existing hardwood sanded and restained on our second floor as well as our first floor dining room as part of our first phase remodeling. As the old carpeting was removed, we discovered the absolutely dismal work quality of the previous owners contractors, as the floors were uneven and poorly installed. In some cases, the floor was 2"+ higher / lower from one corner to the next. Jay was quick to point our the issues, as he knew without addressing it, the floors would be uneven and creaky. Jay worked with us to make the adjustments to our plan and his team got to work making sure the subfloors were solid in preparation for the hardwood installation. This effort took days due to the work needed, which provided us with insight to how much work was needed to get the floors right. His team was great, both from a communication and quality of work perspective. They kept the work areas clean, sealed off with plastic, and would ensure everything was put away and clean when they left for the day. We were amazed at how little dust was in the house given the amount of sanding and cutting required to get the floors even. Once the hardwood floors were installed and had time to acclimate to our home (2 week settling time), the team was back to sand, finish and stain the floors. Again their attention to detail and in many cases, artistry to get the wood slats perfectly butted up against the bathroom tile and addressing other imperfections from the previous owner were amazing. It was clear Jay and his team were proud of their work, not by what they said, but by what they did. We were blown away by how they focused on the smallest details which we may not have caught, but the trained eye, were important to the overall project and end product. Jay worked with us to choose the stain color, using his years of experience to steer us away from colors which we may have regretted, but allowing us to fine tune the color if it was not what we wanted. The floors came out better than expected and we are so happy we choose Pacific Hardwood for our floors. We will be using them for phase two to finish our first floor. read more

I previously hired them for a large job, which they did a decent job on. I most recently tried to hire them for a smaller job - which they completely failed to accomplish. The issue isn't their quality of work. It's that they're totally unreliable. Jay continually makes promises that he can't keep. And then makes excuses for not keeping those promises. And then further - gets angry at you the customer, for being frustrated by their lack of reliability. I'll come this day.... Oh i can't. I'll come this day. Oh i can't. We'll do the installation this day. Oh the wood is going to take 5 days to get here and i'm busy i'm next week. Even if it's a small job, the least you can do is be reliable and accountable. - I would much rather be told it's going to take 4 weeks up front, then be promised it'll happen in 1 week, but then take 4 anyway. If you don't mind this type of interaction, then these guys will get the job done... at some point. **** UPDATED TO RESPOND TO JAY'S COMMENT BELOW**** - You flaked when you said you would come by LAST week. But then you called and said you very busy, etc. Okay fine! It happens. You said we would still do the installation this week... - You flaked when you said you would come Monday or Tuesday. I let Monday pass without hearing from you. Then I had to call you on Tuesday to find out you would now come on Wednesday... - You flaked when you told me the installation would happen on Friday and then texted me Friday morning that you wouldn't be able to do it. This 3-5 days shipping wouldn't have been an issue if you had shown up any of the other times you said you would come. The wood would've been here in time... Additionally, i never lied to you. You must not have paid attention. I explicitly said that you did the floors in the back of our house in 2016 (that's 3 years ago. Not 7.) And i was VERY clear that THIS job was on the original floors in the front part of the house, that you matched the back to. Except these original boards are 2 inches wide. You said you wanted to come see for yourself.... When you left my house on Wednesday, you said the installation will happen on Friday. There was no if's this or that. If you had even said it might not be possible - then i would've been frustrated by, but understood the further delay. But you definitely did not. You said Friday. Perhaps you were overpromising in an effort to please? But that doesn't serve me or you well in situations like this. I did not text you 50 times. I texted you all of 14 times yesterday as we went back and forth. I absolutely expressed frustration. I did not ask for the phone number of your distributor. I asked if you had called two other distributors - and whether or not i should try calling them in an effort to secure the wood. I did not ask for the truck to go pick up the wood. I said, if i had known, i could've driven to San Diego myself to pick it up. This is me trying to problem solve... And you not caring enough about my small job to make a couple extra phone calls - because if you had, you would've found that another supplier has the wood! I'm not sure why you say i can barely afford 800 dollars? That was the price YOU named. I didn't even try to negotiate. And please don't look at stuff like this as you "helping" people. Or doing people some kind of favor. You agreed to do a job that you named the price for. If it wasn't worth your time to take seriously, then you shouldn't have agreed to do it. I don't expect that you or the world revolves around me. And i know this job is small compared to other work you do. And that the quality of your work is decent. But that's not the problem here. The problem is you're unreliable, and don't respect other people's time. I reached out to you a month in advance to arrange this job. Check your call logs. May 28th... There was plenty of time to figure out the wood needed and have the order placed. When you say you're going to do something, do it. When you say you're going to be somewhere on a certain day, at least try to be there. And if you're not, don't make the client track you down to find out why. And when you say you're going to do an installation on a specific day, do it on that day. Again, this is not a bad review as to the quality of your work.
