Couple of key points to know in advance of your visit to this Asian grocery store. If you are easily cold, bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. And if you are easily turned off by things outside the norm best stick to Sendik's. This place is for the adventurous. An average visit to this store is a minimum 60 minute time commitment. Produce is exotic and very reasonably priced. Recommend the baby bok choy, bean and pea sprouts and mushrooms. The rice, noodles and condiments are a great selection but the fish is the reason to come. They will prepare the fish for you and all you have to do is cook it. The hot bar seems to have closed a long time ago as well as several registers and customer service station. There's product everywhere and the building has a foul smell throughout. I haven't been here in a while because it was pretty gross the last time I went. But it really is a convenient location, so I came to pick up a shelf item. I was pleasantly surprised that they had made some improvements to their refrigerator/freezer sections! First, the freezers on the last row were closed off and no longer accessible (thank goodness! mold growing inside freezers is just wrong). Most of their refrigerator section in the back corner was replaced with fridges with doors, so it looks more hygienic. And I did not see any freezers or fridges with cracks. On a Saturday visit, I would have expected a more fresh selection of produce. They weren't as good as I'd expect from most stores, but since I had like 0 expectation at this store (per my previous visits), I was pleasantly surprised at the produce quality. So much so that I actually picked up two items from them. Since their opening, I've seen this place's ups and downs. originally they even had food vendors on the side. it's too bad they're all gone now. I have only seen more and more deterioration since those vendors left, until this past week. It was great seeing a change for the better. I hope this is a sign that the store will continue to get better and there will be a better turn around on their products so things will be even fresher. Armed with a few recipes and a sense of adventure, I was positive that Pacific Produce would have the ingredients I needed. I've heard such great things on Yelp about PP, but sadly, it seems like 10 years ago was the heyday, and now this store is in need of a "mayday!" It's dark. It's cold. It's an old Kohl's! There's no longer a fun bubble tea or quick food station inside. There's no helpful signs above the aisles, although I'm assuming that the aisle choices have been in place for over a decade. I did find the rice selection to be plentiful! I noticed that Soy sauces (and rice wine vinegars and Mirin) seem to have two different shelves in two aisles. Service that was stocking the shelves was really helpful once I asked. I wasn't the only one needing help finding things that day, I noticed. This place is much like the French Empire in Indochina in 1954 on the eve of Dien Bien Phu -- in decline and doomed. It doesn't matter whether or not the Americans will provide aerial support or other military aid, collapse with heavy losses is inevitable. Although they still have the greatest variety of Southeast Asian groceries, the place and workers are run down, dingy and there is a great sadness in the air. Even the casual visitor can sense the greatness that once was, as well as the dissipation of promise and hope. Pacific Produce gets two stars because of the variety that they carry of food. For cleanliness and safety this would rank as zero stars. It's to the point where I am amazed that the health department hasn't shut this place down. Let's talk about the good stuff like variety. They carry almost a full aisle of different soy sauces so I can always buy a good brewed one for a decent price. They also sell fresh pad thai noodles and have a crazy variety of odd produce. If you need lemongrass or lime leaves this is your destination of choice. Also, ramen eaters are in heaven with an entire aisle devoted to different flavors and types. Now let's talk about the cleanliness of this place. There are several coolers that are broken and taped. The coolers are so bad that there is condensation on everyone so that you can't even see into the cooler. I saw some items that were freezer burned because of the conditions. The ceiling leaks and in many different areas the floor is wet. I amazed people haven't fallen down while shopping because it is that bad. It appears like they have absolutely no intention of fixing the leaks either. The international seafood buffet that was supposed to open next door never came to fruition. It sits there as an empty space. The right door to enter has been broken for well over a year so you have to enter on the left. Lights break and they don't replace them so it adds to the dinginess vibe. When this place opened it was such a nice place but they have really let this place run down to the point that I wouldn't buy anything but bottled or canned goods here. I would not trust anything else just because of the shabby conditions. If you absolutely need to get something it's worth a stop but there are many other Asian marts in the city that have sanitary conditions. Be careful entering the parking lot area there are two big pot holes that will loosen your teeth if you hit them just right. I've finally got a chance to pop in to the new Asian grocery store. On the south side of Milwaukee. We were hoping to have lunch. @ the restaurant or deli. Looks they were red tagged by the city. So work was halted due no building permit. They have the largest selections available for noodles, produce, tea, sea foods, and a freezer section with all kinds of processed fish or meat type balls for soups. Some of the freezer windows have lost their insulation and that made window shopping hard as they were covered in condensation. The cilantro, garlic, and shallots were a good deal. The prices for a majority of things are close to any other Asian market. The bean sprouts were past fresh. The isles are tight, so don't come on the weekends if you are claustrophobic. It's cramped just enough to allow one cart to pass another cart barely. So if you are wider than the cart your pushing you might get stuck brushing to get past. I'm glad Milwaukee has a local super market. that reminds me of an Asian Kohls food store. read more

There's a reason most of the great reviews are years old....this store has really gone downhill. When it opened, it was bright, clean and full of interesting items. Today? Well, there's the unplowed, potholed parking lot to start. The inside of the store is now very, very dimly lit - it was like being inside of a garage. Pallets of unshelved crap all over, blocking the aisles. It didn't seem like they had the heat on either as all of the cashiers were bundled up and it was freezing cold in there. As other have noted, you need to check expiration dates hard and really look at stuff to make sure it isn't moldy or rotting. Given that the entire place seems to be lit by a 40watt bulb that is a bit of a challenge. I was shocked when I visited their Appleton Ave location as it was filthy and unsanitary but I see that this location is completely gross as well. I'm sad - I'd rather support a local business vs ordering online or going to Chicago but I shouldn't have to play Inspector Gadget to make sure my purchases aren't rotten or expired. Stepping into this store I felt like Alice in Wonderland. Oh the wondrous and exotic sights you will see upon entering. Because of time constraints we were only able to spend about 45 minutes here, such a pity because you could easily spend hours slowly meandering down each aisle and looking at the products inch by inch. How do I explain to you how basked in awesome this place is? How can I possibly do it justice? I can't words are a poor substitute for real life experience, but I'll do my best. First, this place is like, Megatron gigantic. I'm used to small Asian Markets here in Milwaukee. This place is as big as a Pick N Save, mainly because it previously housed a Kohl's supermarket. You will no doubt see things here that confound you, intrigue you, entice you, and well, to be honest, sometimes repulse you. Are you looking for every kind of "fishball" known to man? They got em. Some made out of fish you ain't never heard of. Do you need 40 different options of julienned jelly fish? They got those too. Canned Quail eggs in water? Check. I don't even know what you would do with those, but I'm dying to find out. Have a hankerin' for steamed buns? Have fun shifting through 30 varieties. Ditto that for noodles, rice and soy sauce. What about a package of duck heads? Yep, you can get those too. The prices here are so low, it is astounding. Many times we picked up a product saw the price, exchanged confused glances and said, that can't be right? In the 45 minutes we were there, we skipped over a bunch of shelves and aisle and still managed to fill our baskets to the brim. Here are just some of the treasures we picked up: Can of Rambutans - I have been positively dying to try this fruit and thought short of going to Singapore, I wouldn't be able to. Shine on Pacific Produce. Shallots - Our best find, 1 pound of shallots for $1.49. I pay $3.49 for two semi-molded shallots at chain groceries. NEVER AGAIN! Dragon Fruit - Fresh, looks like an alien pod. Tastes like a very mild pear. I have to say though, I felt like I was eating an inside out Dalmatian. See picture. Lemongrass - Our second best find. 5 stalks for $1.00. Wasabi Nori Peanuts - As addictive as potato chips Pork and Spinach Potstickers - Some of the best I've ever had Sweet Longaniza Sausage - It's like a sweet bacony sausage, that carmelizes as it browns. This is the best sausage I've ever tasted. Other sights: The disposable "pimp" costume, huge durian fruits, a two pound bag of baby bok choy for a little over $2, two street food vendors where no sandwich costs over $3.50, huge duck eggs, a four pound box of head on shrimp for $17, pheasant, squab, quail, I'm starting to get dizzy. This is a great grocery store for exploring. I'm no expert in Asian cookery, but I love to wander through here and buy some ingredients just to go home and experiment. This is my go-to grocer for: -duck eggs -lemongrass -an assortment of chile pastes and sauces -rice & bean noodles -fermented shrimp paste, etc -interesting fruits, such as rambutan and dragon fruit. I've also seen durian here. -lots of interesting greens -inexpensive seafood (I recommend using the same day as you buy it...) They usually have kimchi that you can buy. I recently purchased all of the ingredients to make a green curry paste (from scratch) here. If you're not that ambitious, no worries - I've purchased plenty of ready to go items, such as pre-made curry pastes and canned rambutan fruit...and it's all been very tasty! Also, I recently experimented with a variety of packaged sweets - lotus flower candy, and a sesame peanut thing. I can't say either was to my liking, but I tried them. What was a big hit with both me and my husband was the sweetened and salted tamarind pods. There is also an extensive frozen food section that I want to explore for some "ready made" foods... Much of the staff doesn't speak English. When I'm looking for something in particular, I usually have a picture of the item on my iPhone and ask someone. So far, that's worked every time. This is not only a wonderful, but long overdue addition to ethnic grocery shopping in Milwaukee. Not only do they have whatever is on your shopping list, the prices will be great too! Too many great products to mention, but some of my favorites are: Fresh Lemongrass - always just picked and smells very fresh Fresh Herbs - the mint is one of my favorites. You get 4-5 times what you would get in those little plastic trays at the grocery store and I guarantee this is much, much more fresh. Oh yeah, and half the price. Yuzu Tea - one of my absolute favorite products at this store (see photo below). In stock flavors vary but I've found Ginger Pear, Citron and Honey. This tea has the consistency of marmalade, but it's not as sweet. Just add to hot water and it's the most soothing and comforting tea you will drink. And it great for sore throats and colds! Fresh Peeled Garlic - I don't know about you but I hate peeling garlic. Let PP do it for you and buy trays of freshly peeled garlic cloves for the same price as the grocery store. Use what you need and freeze the rest = awesome! Frozen potstickers - I took a class on how to make these, it's not hard but it's time consuming. And with all the flavors they have here they make the perfect grab and go snack. Fresh Bamboo Plants - Have you even seen the "Lucky Bamboo" plants at the end of the aisle at Walgreens? They usually look more sick than anyone in line at the pharmacy. But PP sells really healthy (just look at the roots, they should be more orange than yellow) stalks in five gallon pails, usually near the register. Sometimes they have the curly bamboo as well. And you'll get a great deal (about 2.49 per stalk). You may not think you need anything here, but you at least need to check it out, it worth the trip! read more

I went to this market but not for the market. I heard they have banh mi sandwiches. When I want one I have to go to the north side of Chicago near Broadway and Argyle to get this. This is every bit as good as the best in chicago. I had the #1 which was $3.25. There is a hot food rest rant with like three tables next to the sandwich window. It has pictures of the food for the non Asians I guess. It looks good but I was there for the banh mi. I will have to try this another day now that I know. The sandwich was fresh and tasty. If you have never had the banh mi it might seem strange. There is nothing american like it. Get the jalapeño on it and its sweet and hot at the same time. From the out side you would never know that this gem is on the inside. I was back again for the mixed cold cut sandwhich #1. I myself will not be shopping there ever again. I have been to many different places in the US and have gone to many different Asian store for Korean ingredients, but this is by far the worse I ever been. When I first entered I was really caught off gaurd as to the empty areas of the store. I also notice that the milk being sold was expanded as if spoiled or something. Some of the produce was good looking, while other produce wasn't. I saw alot of Korean products, but because of the store as a whole, I would not buy any "sealed" products from them. In the freezer section there were parts that were not lit and that had shattered glass. Some sweet buns were on sale in that section and I was very disturbed by it. When I asked a lady about parilla leaves, she told me that they did not sell it at first, then said something like, not now maybe come back tomorrow. I just didn't feel like the people who were in charge were honest and I myself saw enough to confirm other bad reviews with what I experienced. I only bought one item. It was a winter pastery, something I have bought many times from the Mei Hau Market, but it tasted old and made me feel nauseous after having three small bites. When I looked inside of the pastry there were small black particles of some sort in the pastry. I have never seen that in other pastries I have bought from other Asian stores. I would rather pay more money to stores that are clean and sell good product, than save a little here and there. I wouldn't chance it if I were you. Although there are very few Asian stores in the Milwaukee area, I would rather drive to chicago, if necessary, than return to this store. Well the lights are back on at Pacific Produce after being dark for quite a long time. They had done some remodeling and it was quite hard to shop. They still do have some issues in the store like water pooling throughout the store near the coolers. And some of the produce needed some attention. But it is the place to find whatever you need in Asian food. They have unusual produce like a variety of long eggplants, jackfruit, or fragrant melons. Dried foods like fish and shrimp. They also have unusual candy like squid flavored or shrimp flavored. They have sticky buns and steamers. That's what we came for today. And some awesome red chili paste. The place can be a bit confusing for the novice but when you can find someone, they are friendly. There are isles upon isles of Asian styled delicacies. I think the heat is off in the place though as the cashier was wearing her winter jacket to check us out. All in all an ok experience but you need to be prepared to look for what you need and help yourself. read more

It could be that I have no idea what half of the items are, but it seems that they could use some more translated signs and what not. Produce is dirt cheap and fresh. You can also purchase whole fish, fresh and frozen. There is a carry-out Thai place inside along with the best, cheapest and most unique sandwich shop in town. I find myself here almost once a week either roaming the isles aimlessly or picking up a cheap sandwich because I am too tired to cook. read more

There isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said about this place. I think what I like most about Pacific Produce is that I don't feel like I'm in Milwaukee, WI when I walk through the store. If you walk in with any doubt about authenticity, that doubt should disappear after a few steps. There are fruits and vegetables that I have never heard of or seen, not even on the Travel Channel! There are tons of options of different Asian canned goods and sauces and noodles. There are parts of animals for sale that I didn't know anyone ate. I don't know if I will ever elevate my cooking skills to require the purchase of most of these products, but this place if worth a visit just to see, experience, and appreciate parts of the Asian culture that you may not otherwise get a chance to...very cool! read more

Like Jessica Z said... it's a mega-super-awesome Asian grocery store. MEGA SUPER AWESOME. (I'm yelling.) What we ended up with: -a buttload of ginger for super duper cheap -pork/celery buns + veggie spring rolls -more Mai Ploy (duh!) and some interesting looking soy sauce -sweet potato sichuan soup -Miso -brown jasmine rice -other stuff I'm forgetting now because my brain is shorting out due to the vast amount of everything that I looked at and may or may not have purchased. What they have: Aside from everything? Expect a vast selection of frozen goodies and cold goodies (Pork and cabbage buns to bean curd to pig ovaries to black sesame dessert bars and chicken feet and so so so much more), tea and juices in small and in bulk (pennywort drink? what's that??), a deli with whole duck and crazy sausage and some stuff that looked delicious and some stuff that, well, not so much... ), sauces for miles (sesame chili oil FTW! + about 1278 others kinds of what is most certainly delicious), noodles/rice for miles (so awesome, I'm a fan of udon and soba), and a killer (KILLER!) produce selection that's super cheap and really comprehensive (I don't even know how to talk about this. Suffice it to say it was quite impressive). There were lots of things at Pacific Produce that remained a mystery to me, as I can't read anything that's not in English or not in Spanish. Also, there's a little spot inside the store where one can purchase Banh Mi and other Vietnamese goodies. Yum. Omitting the fifth star or two reasons: 1. There were a number of items that looked old. Yes - it's big. But NO - the way they do business is horrible. Look CAREFULLY when you buy anything - they boldly sell many items that are expired according to the manufacture's labels. And the produce part often has moldy veggies and mushrooms... worse to worst, I bought a tray of canned soup, and when I opened the 1st one, it's disgustingly bad - looked like a polluted river of green color. So i took them back to return. The manager was like a gang and talked with such attitude and condescendingly, although with my hard insistence to return he did unwillingly return the rest of the tray (with a face that looked like I owe him 10,000 dollars instead of feeling sorry that I had to carry that shit back and forth and drive and wait for him while he intentionally slowed down and went to do other things during the return), he STILL refused to return the can i opened. For Pete's sake, I couldn't drink that shit and there is no reason I should not be able to return it. Tell you what, don't even go to this place. It's simply not worth it to pay money to a business that is not good for the community and not caring for the customer. I have not been there for over 6 months and used alternative markets that are way more responsible and fresh instead. For example, Meihua market on National Ave, and Anh Chau market on 27th St. They are smaller but still have really good selection and are willing to listen to your need and get stuff for you. read more

I'm sad to say that we only have a very few small Asian markets in Milwaukee. Pacific Coast is the first, full service, Asian market of it's kind in town...that I know of. I do love the Ma & Pa places. But to see such a large and extensive selection of Eastern goodies made my mouth start to water. 1) As a Polish girl, I don't know nearly as much as I would like about cooking different East-Ethnic foods. 2) I need a pack of Asian grandmothers (from various elasticities) to escort me to this store and translate. Then...see #1. 3) Please learn from my mistakes. Just because someone works there, doesn't mean they actually eat all the food they sell. LOL! My husband actually called me on this after I asked the checkout lady about a Banana Leaf Wrapped Sticky Rice...thingy...she had no idea what the heck it was. Well let me tell you she's missing out. I was attempting homemade Pad Thai and decided to stop here for some ingredients. This store smells HORRIBLE. I used to live in Chicago and have been to plenty of Asian grocery stores, so I understand that they can smell a little funky, but this was beyond. It would be best described as rotting meat in a port-a-potty on a hot day. The store is super unorganized. For example, there was a sauce aisle that had every kind of soy sauce you could think of, but soy sauce was also in 5 other places. Very confusing. Couldn't find the fish sauce I was looking for and gave up due to the smell. Unpacked pallets everywhere. Prices on produce here are great and there's tons of selection (if you can find anything). Pacific Produce is an experience. I could easily spend all day walking their aisles! Pacific is a grocery store that carries Asian products - more Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai products than Japanese and Korean. (The Korean and Japanese food items take up half an aisle.) It has a meat counter and a fish counter, an extensive frozen foods selection, a produce department, and a section that contains plates/cutlery, shampoo/conditioner, and other non-food products. I mainly go to Pacific for one thing: produce. The best thing about the produce is that not only is it fresh - it's also really inexpensive. Twenty pieces of shelled garlic cloves for two bucks? Yes, please. Huge daikon for a fraction of what you'd be paying elsewhere? Sign me up. Not to mention they have a really good variety of greens - not just bok choy and choy sum. And I swear, they have half-pounds of basil! I usually can't not spend at least fifty bucks every time I go there, but the prices can't be beat, so fifty bucks nets me a ton of stuff. read more

I'm very happy to have found this place. It may not be as big as an H-Mart but it has a pretty good fresh veggie section. Also lots of cuts of pork as well as an assortment of fish. Fruits were little limited, but still better than a Pick 'n Save. Plenty of packaged foods, and the frozen premade section is pretty useful for someone who doesn't cook much. I've been to lots of Asian markets in Milwaukee and this one is by far the largest. The produce looked very fresh. I don't know why anyone would ever buy ingredients for cooking Asian food anywhere other than an authentic Asian market?!? It's SO much cheaper than a regular grocery store where those items are considered "specialty foods". The people working here were very friendly and approachable and most spoke English. They seemed comfortable with a non-Asian shopping in their store-which is not always the case in some of the other Milwaukee markets. If you go DEFINITELY get a Banh Mi sandwich at the little restaurant/deli on the left when you walk in. DELICIOUS and there aren't many places in Milwaukee to get them. read more

Can be overwhelming cause it a huge place, but if you take your time though each aisle you can discover some creative items to use in your cooking. They have better prices and more selection then your local asian aisle in the grocery store. I stock up on: -candy -noodles(fresh & dried) -ramen bowls -sauces(fish, chili sauce, ma po, black bean, soy sauce, Etc) -wonton wrapper -rice flour -kimchi -exotic fruit & veggies -curry Every time I go I discover new sauces & ingredients to cook with. Also some others that seem too crazy/afraid to use. Could use more helpful staff & have things priced better. Some had no pricing or would have one price on a bottle but then the bottle right behind it a different price. read more

This place weirds me out. It smells kinda funny, it's kinda dark and I don't know what 90% of this stuff is. But I like it. When I was in high school I worked at the adjacent pet store. In those days Kohl's Food Stores were still a thing, and I was over here buying microwave burritos and candy all the time. It looks nothing like it once did, and that is a VERY good thing. Pros: -The Banh Mi stand is awesome. Cheap too. -While the store appears to be kinda dank and nasty, I've never seen a crisis of cleanliness. In fact it seemed quite clean. -They had durian. I saw that doucher Andrew Zimmern nearly puke when he ate it so I'm not going near it, but it's there. -The variety is shocking. I'm just looking for some mirin dude. -Rambutan is my new favorite fruit. -The Pho restaurant is really good too. South 27th street is the unofficial Pho capitol of Wisconsin. Cons: -There is a definite funk in the air. That may be completely normal, but it seems like Joanna T attributed it to the fish. Caveat Emptor. -Where the hell is the damn peanut sauce? It's not that the joint is disorganized, it's just not very organized either. -I just cannot get with all the gnarly animal parts. This is the place to find Asian groceries in Milwaukee. Actually, you could probably do most of your shopping here if you were so inclined with relatively little supplementing from one of the big chain groceries. The big draw for me is the inexpensive seafood. My best friend is way into seafood, so the ability to pick up an entire fish of decent quality for pretty cheap is a huge plus. The downside, though, is that most of it is frozen so you do have to make plans in advance (honestly, though, I wouldn't expect otherwise given the sheer volume of fish that they deal in). Other seafood--mussels, clams, and whatnot--is also readily available. Their produce selection is pretty great too. You'll find most of your standards, but they also have the unusual ingredients--I'm looking at you galangal--that you need to complete your tom kha gai. The selection of bottled sauces is nothing to shake a stick at, either. It does sorta have that funky fish smell to it that other reviewers have pointed out, so...you know, be warned. read more

I checked this place out a couple of weeks ago. They weren't lying when they said this place has everything. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Asian Grocery stores, but I have very little if anything to complain about. Aisles of ramen (it may sound crazy, but real Chinese Ramen is much better than the 50 cent stuff at regular grocery stores), tons of fresh asian veggies, a whole aisle of soy sauce...I could go on and on... It's clean and well organized - not something true at all Asian Stores. I love this place! read more
