FSM of where the zerks are located.

I requested to have my landcruiser's drivline u-joints greased and an oil change while I was at it as I do not have a lift at home and wanted to grease without the wheels being loaded. They responded saying they do not service vehicles without an initial inspection which has a baseline price of around $195. While not super excited about this, it was reassuring that they wanted to make sure the car was in good shape overall, fine. Pacific Rim called me later saying the service was done and they noticed the clunking while shifting (why I wanted to get the u-joints/driveline greased in the first place) seemed to be coming from the front diff. They then suggested i replace the entire front diff, which would run around $5200 total. Also, they were unable to find the zerks in order to grease the truck. I passed on such a huge repair for now and took the truck home. Frustrated they couldn't grease the driveline, I shimmied under the landcruiser in my garage and lo-and-behold I found the zerks on my own. Used my own grease and grease-gun and did it myself, despite the car being on the ground ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The clunk was markedly reduced, not gone but i suspect the slip- and u-joints were super dry and needs some time to work in. Granted, I had to drive the car slightly forward and back to get the driveshaft in the right orientation for reaching each zerk, (which wouldve been easy to do simply by turning the driveshaft by hand while the car is off the ground in neutral, again a reason i took it to a shop in the first place). I'm not a mechanic, I'm sure they know better than me on most things related to my own car, but i heavily researched this clunk before taking it in and identified greasing the driveline as one possible fix for this symptom. It's easy and cheap and at the very least would indicate if thats the true issue, all at the low cost of grease (14$) and 15-30 mins of labor. But to jump to replacing the entire front diff is a huge conclusion to reach. I even asked if they looked at the bushings on it to see if that might be the issue and they said they hadn't. Meaning without much actual investigation they were ready to sell me on a $5200 repair! Overall, Jeremy was super nice and responsive in communication. I hate to leave such a negative review because everyone I interacted with seemed great, and their other reviews are so positive. They even offered a loaner car if i were to go ahead with the big service, which is an awesome option to provide. But, it is hard to trust this shop when they couldn't do something so simple that i had specifically asked about when I first went to them.

Fair price. Good service. Good communication. Was able to get the price worked out through Yelp and got the car in quickly for service.

However, our trip took an unexpected turn on the last day when my vehicle's alternator suddenly failed, leaving us stranded and anxious to return home. In a panic, I quickly searched for a nearby mechanical shop and found Village Autocare & Tire. I called the shop, and a gentleman named Riley answered. I explained our predicament, emphasizing that we were just visiting and had nowhere to stay. I asked if they could replace my alternator before closing time. He was initially helpful in understanding my urgent need to get back to Vancouver. After towing my vehichle and upon arriving at the shop, I met Ken, who was at the front office. I reiterated my situation, and he assured me he would call with a quote. As I had to leave the shop for a bit, I asked Ken for nearby coffee shops, but he failed to mention that there was a mall right next door, which would have been helpful, not knowing the area. After two hours, Ken called with a quote of $1,687 plus tax for replacing my idler pulley and alternator, which was a refurbished Denso brand (Retail $235). I was shocked by the quote, and I knew that I was taking advantage of it. Given our circumstances I had no other choice but to go ahead with repair. I pleaded with him to have the car fixed by the end of the day, but he informed me that the alternator wouldn't arrive until 4 PM and that the installation would take three hours (Shop time is 1.8 hours). This meant we would have to wait until the next day to leave. Feeling frustrated, I walked back to the shop to retrieve our belongings and my mom's medication. To my dismay, I noticed the Denso alternator & the idler pully sitting on a table in Ken's office. It became clear to me that Ken had taken advantage of our desperate situation and overcharged us for the repair. The customer service and experience were incredibly disappointing, and I would caution anyone considering Village Autocare & Tire. It's unfortunate that businesses like this take advantage of vulnerable customers. If you find yourself in a similar situation, I recommend exploring other options before settling on this shop. Final Thought: Stay away from this shop!

I didn't leave a review at that time as I thought I'll never go back there...so what's the point. Their annoying software kept prompting me for a review so here it is! I had brought my car in twice before for a oil change and some other small thing and noticed right away there was a pattern of up-selling. One bill was estimated lower but when I got it, it had doubled. This time around I think they were looking at my brakes. I was sitting in the waiting room waiting for them to finish and the front desk guy, (his name is Irish), started talking to me. By the way I'm a woman. He talked and talked and I was being kind listening but hoped the repair would finish soon so I could end the conversation. He was making sure I knew he was conservative for some reason. I suspected it was because I had a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker on my car. He then told me he had a son who was a Federal police agent of some sort, and how he was walking down the street wearing a Trump hat and a man came up and knocked it off his head. He detailed with relish how his son threw the guy to the ground, beat him up, handcuffed him and sent him away to jail for 9 years...just for knocking a hat off his head. What a douche! Both he and his son! I couldn't just get up and leave as they still had my car and were working on it. I had to sit there and try to deal with this jerk nicely until I got my car back. This creep needs to be fired! Do they not know they work in a blue city in a university district no less? Don't ever take your car here. There are many other options in town. I was new to the city and didn't know who to go to at the time. Adrian Sherman
