Steve is now my forever go-to mechanic in Seattle. I live here in southern CA but bought a used Audi for my daughter who lives and attends college in WA. Imagine my daughter's horror: I just bought her a used, pretty little car with AWD. She was in love at first sight. I had it checked out with my SoCal mechanic and everything was great. All of the services were done at a local Audi dealer on time every time... did I mention from the Audi dealer? But within a week of transporting the car to her an alert screams "Switch Off Engine! The oil pressure is low!" She calls crying as she driving home from work saying she didn't do anything wrong but the alert tells her to stop driving immediately. I desperately tried to find a reputable mechanic over the weekend - out of state - with no knowledge of the city but thankfully Yelp led me to Steve. He was quick to respond and even allowed her to come that very morning despite his loaded schedule. He diagnosed her car, sent me texts of each inspection check he performed (with pictures) using an app of some sort that was very detailed. He discovered the problem was a broken solenoid bolt that caused the oil leak; replaced it; added new oil; drove it around to check the oil pressure; rechecked any faulty codes and called me to tell me my daughter's car is all fixed.... ... Wait for it ... The bill was just a fraction of the costs I thought I might have a pay. He could have said it was a gasket leak, or worse engine damage, etc. I wouldn't know and couldn't know but he was thorough, honest, and so impressively great professional. I love cars, but I'm not a mechanic and he saved me. He saved my dad-cred, saved me time, energy and money. I'm my daughter's hero but he's my mechanic hero. Jim's Import Auto was our family mechaninc for 20 years. He was honest, fair, and just a good mechanic. Continued to go here after the buy out, when Jim still worked in the shop and it was fine. But once Jim retired, I got the full effect of Marco's profit-myopic business philiosphy and 'Skeezy Steve's' smarmy offensive front of the house. Shop rates doubled, and rather than a mechanic-customer relationship, they made you feel like they were doing you a favor by taking your business. Last time I stopped in a couple years back, Skeezy told me they were backed up for weeks and couldn't look at my car, then immediately took an appointment for the next person at the desk. Went in to see about a P0305 cylinder 5 misfire on one of my AMG Mercedes on the 9th of March and requested that my fuel injectors, coils and spark plugs get looked at. I was initially told that the misfire is coming from what appeared to be a failing coil. I recommended to "Stephen" that it would be best for me to have all the coils replaced with the spark plugs and to check the fuel injector on cylinder 5 for malfunction as well and if it's the injector let's go ahead and replace all 8 injectors along with all 8 coils and 8 spark plugs. I was told by Stephen that "unless you feel like throwing money at the problem; you won't need all the coils and injectors replaced" so I agreed to the service as it was written up. 8 spark plugs were replaced, Cylinder 5 ignition coil was replaced and a camshaft sensor was replaced according to the receipt. I was charged over $250 for a diagnosis for a grand total of $1398.50 with the labor. 3 weeks go by and the check engine light comes back with the same P0305 code - cylinder 5 misfire which I diagnosed again with my BlueDriver OBD READER so I called them again to have them to check it out. Went back in and Stephen indicated that the problem is now perhaps the fuel injector; which I asked them to check during the first visit. When I asked why wasn't that checked the first time as requested; Stephen informed that we have to work our way down to the bottom of the problem. My response was; wouldn't it be more logical and cost effective for your customers to work your way from the possible biggest issue to the more common beginning with cylinder inspection, fuel injector inspection, spark plugs then the ignition coil?....Stephens response was "semantics".....totally dismissing the research that I've done on this issue, my prior recommendations relative to my vehicle and my knowledge of the M157 engine. I then agreed to order the parts for a total replacement of all 8 ignition coils and all 8 of the fuel injectors to have them to do the installation which should have been done the first time. I then call back 2 days after the second visit because the service that was rendered and paid for during the first service (see attached receipt) didn't achieve the results that I paid for since the same check engine light error code came back. So I phoned them again after the second visit requesting that they fix the intermittent P0305 error code first (which is a sign of a bad fuel injector) prior to the installation of the new coils and the new fuel injectors for the other 7 cylinders since the work on cylinder 5 was still under their service and parts warranty but after being misinformed about the timing chain tensioners replacement that I requested (A separate known MB issue with this particular engine) I was informed by Stephen that they horoscopes cylinder 5 but there is no proof of record in the service receipt that the cylinder was actually Boro-Scoped to check for Cylinder scoring (which is a known "non-detrimental" issue for certain engine numbers for the M157 due to an error with the manufacturing press used in production of the M157 engine). I was also told that a timing tool would need to be purchased (The same timing tool used to replace the camshaft adjusters which I'm not in need of) I knew that this guy didn't know what He was talking about. To replace the secondary chain tensioners to remedy chain rattle upon cold start does not require the opening of the top valve covers. The tensioners only require the front plate of the assembly to be opened and doesn't require a customer with this issue to purchase on behalf of a so called "Import specialist shop" a 600+ dollar tool for one time use which will never be needed again once the upgraded tensioners and check valves are replaced. With said; I did not feel comfortable with allowing this shop to touch my engine again because at this point it felt like selective scamming. To think that I was recommended this shop by an acquaintance of which was made known to Stephen at the onset of what I initially thought would be a great shop. Turns out that in my case it is not. This shop only has 2 mechanics and I truly believe that the two mechanics may be overworked and working in a toxic workplace thanks to the negative attitude of this "repair coordinator" and his inability to check his attitude at the door as well as what appears to be a constant need to be correct in the eyes of hard working, concerned and paying customers which is a psychological sign of narcissism. read more

I don't like to be negative. But, I don't like being taking advantage of or being ripped off. I WAS A LONG TIME CUSTOMER. But THIS is NOT the same shop that the old owner, Jim once ran. I took my Vanagon in last year, at a time were I was sick, and was ripped off. After a year of cooling off and talking to other mechanic friends and shops. It's clear they ripped me off and over charged. To make matters worse, even after spending 3 times what I should have, I am now still forced to redo the fueling systems because of the poor work. It's a chop shop, in out, make a few bucks. But care not what happens long term. But the fact I have to drop the fuel tank, AGAIN, after paying so much (a new tank is 250), and not getting a new tank because they were too lazy to replace the 30+ year old fuel lines connecting. Just lame and unacceptable. I have been warning my fellow Vanagon's nuts, and have heard similar claims as well, so this is a pattern. And ultimately why I'm writing this, to warn others. Brought my 2016 Mini Countryman All4 in to Import Doctors for a second opinion on a clutch replacement. Stephen at Import Doctors responded quickly and quoted me a repair that beat the dealership quote by a wide margin. He arranged to have the work done the following week. The work took a little longer and cost a bit more than the estimate - they discovered an interior part that needed replacement so they went ahead and replaced it as well - but I would have approved anyway. I have been bringing my cars here for close to 15 years but it was not until recently that their professional knowledge and attention to detail showed me how smart I have been with doing such. I have a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum that I adore and 5000 miles ago (20k miles) I brought it into The Import Doctors for an oil change. They noticed a gasket was leaking oil and suggested I bring it in to Nissan for warranty. I did exactly that but Nissan claimed I did not have a problem but said they'd watch out for a leak moving forward. Fast forward to today. My seat cooler motor was faulty so I brought the car in for repair of the seat cooler motor which was also under warranty and obviously not working. I also got an oil change because it was convenient (still will go to The Import Doctors moving forward) and Nissan called to tell me what Steve at The Import Doctors told me 5k miles ago, I had a leak. Have been taking my car here for 5 or so years. Always felt like they did good work and were honest, and treated me like a person (not like "oh she's a woman so she doesn't know about cars so we can pull one over on her"). That is, until a few months ago. About a year ago I stared getting weird vibes from Steve. Couldn't put my finger on why though, and chose not to find a new repair shop because it was an inconvenience I didn't want to deal with. But a few months ago, I took my car in for an oil change and asked them to investigate a check engine light that my car was giving me an OBDII code saying the problem was the vanos solenoid(s), and told them my car was occasionally stalling out. Took it in, they changed the oil and "diagnosed" the code - from what they verbally told me, they didn't check the solenoids themselves, nor did they swap the car's two vanos solenoids with each other (standard diagnostic procedure to determine if the issue is the solenoid itself, or something else). They said the problem was probably my gunky oil (side note, when I brought the car in I acknowledged that I was pretty sure I had missed an oil change. I get the oil changed every 3 months because it's an old 2006 car; Steve checked their records, said my last oil change was 5 months prior, and said "no you didn't, your last oil change was in (month)". And I thought, ... yeah... that means I missed an oil change.) Anyway, they said that the problem was probably my old gunky oil, and that replacing it would probably fix the problem anyway. When I picked up my car, the check engine light was still on. Thought that was weird but thought maybe they just didn't clear the code or something? Didn't think much of it until it turned off on its own two days later, turned back on a day after that, and then my car stalled out again. Called them back, took the car back into them, they did another diagnostic (which they charged me for again, despite not doing a thorough diagnostic to actually diagnose the issue the first time around). Said it was one of the solenoids in particular, which they determined by swapping them with each other. They recommended replacing the one that went bad, and the other one as well since they said it was likely to fail soon if the other one had too. I said sure, replace them, and asked for them to please return to me the solenoids they pulled from my car, because I like to tinker and understand how my car's parts work, so wanted to check em out. They did return the parts to me, in the boxes the new parts came in - a brand that makes aftermarket parts. Import doctors has told me verbally on many occasions that they only use OEM parts or better, and the invoice from Import Doctors stated "OEM Parts" and charged me a price comparable to genuine BMW VANOS solenoids. The parts they put in my car though, were aftermarket solenoids with subpar reviews, that cost 1/3 of the price of the OE part. (Shortly after this whole ordeal my car had a separate cooling system issue that I chose to have evaluated and repaired at the dealership, as I didn't trust bringing my car to Import Doctors after what happened with the solenoids. I asked the dealership to please look at the Vanos solenoid and let me know whether they looked OEM or aftermarket. They confirmed that they appeared to be aftermarket.) I texted them to ask about it, they didn't respond to my text or call back. I ended up disputing the charge for the parts, and the duplicate charge for the diagnostic, with my credit card company, and won. Would not recommend this deceitful business to any car owner, woman or otherwise, hoping to find an honest mechanic. I personally wonder how many other times they pulled one over on me before I happened to catch this particular time. ___ As an additional aside, I've fixed and replaced a number of things on the interior of my car - retractable cup holders, trim, the car's CCC, a door window regulator, and my drivers side door lock actuator (the thing that makes a car's interior door-lock button & key fob both work to lock & unlock the door). My actuator failed and I couldn't lock m car door with the key fob. Import Doctors quoted $800-900 to fix it. I bought a used part on eBay, took the door panel off, and fixed it myself for 80 bucks (cost of the part) + an hour doing the labor myself. Next time I brought it in, I told Steve that the fob worked again because I replaced the actuator with a used part. His response: "welp, that'll work until it doesn't." Yeah... the same can be said about... any part - new or used. And yes, I know that the lifespan of a used part is shorter than the lifespan of a new part. But even if it fails again, and I have to replace it again, that's still cheaper than having had them do it... I did take that into consideration when choosing to DIY the repair and use a used part. His response felt dismissive and felt like, "silly woman, you should've just let us pros fix it instead". read more

My wife has brought her car in to both their old shop down in SODO and the new one on Green Lake. Good enough work, seem competent and no problems. Agreed $150 starts to rival the dealerships, but it's probably worth it for the work attention and these days the dealers really don't have anything special going on IMHO. I thought I was calling Import Service Center and was hoping to talk to Jim but alas, Marco at Import Doctors answered. Perhaps the call started off poorly because I didn't know that the business changed hands three years ago. I was calling to schedule a brake service. I asked how much they charge to replace brake pads and instead of giving me an estimate, Marco asked when I last changed my oil. So.. I might be female but I'm an engineer and AFAIK, oil changes have nothing to do with my car's brakes. After some back and forth, with an accusatory injection from Marco asking why I can't remember the date of my last oil change, I finally said it was changed last month. This was the magic answer because we then moved on... to him blurting "and so that's when you were told that you needed new brakes?" Apparently, I am incapable of knowing when my 10+ year old Subaru needs new brakes. I don't know if he wanted to chase me away because I was an Import Service Center customer or knew that I wouldn't need enough of his services because I own a Subaru. The 5 minute exchange is why I was so loyal to Import Service Center. Why must I validate my ability to maintain my car over the phone to a complete stranger? I realize Jim won't see this but I wish I could have thanked him for all his years of excellent work on my cars and the great service he provided to friends I referred to his garage. I ended up at Speciality Motors but there were plenty of garages in the area who did not grill me when I called for an estimate. read more

I have been taking my car here for the past 6 years ever since they were located in Belltown. They were really great in the early years, not charging me for minor diagnostics work and generally being very helpful. Over the past couple years I believe that that policy regarding the diagnostics changed. I took my car to another mechanic recently, as a result of Import Doctors' move up north, and although I have had my car's oil (full synthetic) changed religiously, usually every 5 months since I wouldn't hit 5000 miles before then, the mechanic at the new shop said that the oil in my car was *very* dirty this time despite the fact that I had only gone about 3000 miles on it. I have no proof, but the mechanic suggested that it is possible that the last time that I took my car into Import Doctors the the oil may not actually have been changed for me, and a new sticker may have just been issued. Even ignoring that, my car's check engine light came on a couple months ago, and there was a problem with the evaporative emissions system which resulted in the fuel vapor pump needing to be replaced. The cost for that was about $900 mostly due to labor, which seemed steep but I accepted it. I got the car back, and I immediately noticed that my gas gauge wasn't working. After taking the car back in, Import Doctors said that the car's fuel system self test must have caused the fuel tank to pressurize to such a point where the fuel sender assembly got destroyed. I still find this a bit hard to believe, but I ended up shelling out another $700 or more to get that replaced. In the end, I was a bit suspicious about why I ended up having to take my car back and pay for some damage that occurred while the car was in their possession. All in all, I still think that there are some great mechanics at this shop, but I question whether they are 100% honest as a business. My new mechanic mentioned that a lot of shops are happy to take your money if you bring your car in for oil changes ever 3000 miles or 3 months, even though synthetic oils are rated for closer to 4000 - 5000 miles, especially if you aren't riding your vehicle very hard. He told me that you can typically go much longer than that on full sythetic, and the time-based expiration doesn't really apply in the Pacific NW because our environment is mellow. I'd been taking cars to Jim at import service center for 25 years. I called yesterday to make an appointment to have my power steering fixed and an oil change. No problem they said. -First warning sign: Dropped car off at 7:45. Marco takes my info, and asks when I want to pick it up. "2? (Knowing it probably needed parts)" "no problem" he says, then says "sounds like an exhaust leak" (it's loud he heard it outside when I pulled up) I said "No. It's the power steering." -Second warning sign: I arrive early, 1pm, by bus and my car is in the same spot I left it in. Finally getting pulled in at 1:15.* So 10 after 2 guy comes to the counter with key/paperwork and says "OK". Proceeds to tell me what my car needs with no consultation and seemingly no desire to fix it. (It was already parked and waiting for me) When I question the situation he turns incredibly rude and tries to put me on the defensive when my car sat there till 45min before it was supposed to be done when I told them what was up initially. Clearly they not only didn't want to fix my car at that time, he just about threw my keys at me. Sadly these guys bought and killed the last great auto shop in Seattle. Stay away. It was a mad house in their lot. They're clearly in over their heads. It was never that kind of chaos under Jim. *At this point I'm 99% sure they're not going to deliver but I want to give Jim, the original owner, the benefit of the doubt. read more

He's been working on a tricky problem with my 97' Saab this week and called me today just because he said he would and so he could ask if he could keep the car a few days longer. Wow. No seriously, wow. My experience at Import Doctors exceeded my expectations in every possible way. I really wasn't looking for a mechanic, but I found them during a desperate search when my car showed up in ill health after being transported across the country. When I say found them, I mean I used Google Maps on my phone to locate the nearest mechanic because A) my car wouldn't go much above 7 mph and B) I knew if I turned it off it wouldn't start again. I called them, from my driver's seat, to make sure they could take a look at my car. I explained the situation to Marco and asked if I could drop it off. He said he could, but due to the amount of business he had, he wouldn't have room for it until later in the day. I asked if there was anything he could do, given my situation, and he told me to bring it by and they'd figure out where to put it later. I limped the half dozen blocks, left the car running at the entrance of the PACKED garage and checked in with Marco. He said he probably wouldn't get to it for a day or two, but he would be in touch. I inquired about the dearth of space, to which he explained there was a lot of work to be done and none of his employees had shown up yet. This didn't inspire me with confidence, but there wasn't much I could do at that point. Two days later, I received a call explaining my battery was dead, the positive terminal had corroded and fused to the battery and everything was back to normal after replacing those two items and flashing the ECU. I asked about cost and, expecting the worst, was pleased with the answer. I'd more or less predicted the repair, so I wasn't surprised at the outcome, but I was surprised I'd gotten away from a crappy situation for a relatively reasonable price and with zero hassle. When I picked my car up the next day, ON A SATURDAY, Marco was kind enough to show me the corroded terminal without me even asking. The bonus? He set my radio presets for me, since a dead battery meant there were none (that and the car had just arrived in Seattle). Talk about an old school shop providing old school service. Refreshing. Very refreshing. They have likely earned my as a customer until they give me a reason otherwise. read more

Comprehensive service, open and honest pricing, great communication, what's not to love? The wife brought our 7-year old mini cooper in for a thorough check up. We already knew the coolant tank was leaking and would need to be fixed (common issue in minis). The guys set out clearly each of the things that would need looking at in our quote including parts and labor costs. We were able to go home, and fix the smaller things ourselves (air filters, etc) just so that we had a sense of achievement. Some places would have been pissy about that, but Steve wasn't at all, rather he was encouraging. For the things we couldn't do (brake line flush, power steering, coolant tank) the guys fixed them all, on quote, in half a day, AND the heating had packed up since the initial quote, and they spent quite some time trying to figure out what was wrong, tracked down the problem and then managed to fix it without having to order the miniscule but $80 (according to Mini BMW) plastic toggle. I was so impressed I asked if I could pay a little extra labor costs, because I knew they spent way more time on the heating than they'd quoted for, but they wouldn't have it. Not only would I come here again, and recommend it, I really would HATE to go elsewhere now. Don't mistrust all the 5* reviews - they earn them. read more

My experience with Import doctors was not that great! I had been there to service my VW Jetta for few issues with battery change and engine cooling/heating system and general tune up. While they did a good job in tuning up - after the service the anti-theft system in lock started giving strange problems. I have never had that issue before. when I went back - they looked at it for a day and then told that I had to change my entire key systems and would cost more than $1000/- !! I was like no way. I never had any issue with the keys for about yr and it can't suddenly go wrong!! They were quite courteous and nice though.. read more

I've been taking my cars to Import Doctors since I bought my first car, a 1966 VW Beetle, in 1990. Over two decades of loyalty should basically tell you all you need to know. It's not an uninformed loyalty. Owning only Volkswagens all my life, I've had plenty of experiences with other shops when I lived in NY (college) and SF (2 years). No one has been as consistently good as Import Doctors. They are not the cheapest shop around, but their work is super solid and they go the extra mile in terms of customer service. I appreciate that they look at service in terms of the life of the car: They give me early warnings about things that I might need to budget for later, and if a repair can wait, they tell me the trade-offs so I can make an informed decision. Incredible shop. They have excellent mechanics (Jason especially) and they stand by their work. If they don't get it right, they will correct the issue. They will work with you on issues, even months after service is completed. Highly recommended shop!!! I came in for a pre-purchase inspection for an old high mileage truck I was looking to buy from a private seller. I've been to the Import Doctors 4 times and couldn't be more satisfied. They are honest and definitely don't rip you off. The first time I took my car there the "check engine" light came on. They thoroughly checked my car and determined there was nothing wrong. With my lack of auto knowledge they could have ripped me off but they were totally honest. I've been back 3 other times, mostly minor stuff and they've been great! On my last visit, they noted a few things we should check again in a few months but didn't try to force anything on me. In mid February our son who owns a 2008 VW Jetta called us and said that there was a bad vibration when he was driving. He brought the car to our house and I told him I thought it might be a motor mount. The next day (Monday) he took the car to the VW Dealership on University and later that day, they told him that the pendulum mount had broken and that the bolt attaching it to the transmission was broken and that they could not remove the broken bolt. VW stated that he needed a new transmission to the tune of $7000. We then spoke with Ken at The Import Doctors and he said that they could check it out at no charge so we picked up the car from VW and took it to Ken. Later that day, we received a call from them stating that the car was repaired and that their mechanic had removed the broken bolt, put in a helix and the car was good to go for 1/2 hour of labor--total bill about $90! There was some other work that the car needed, e.g. new tires so we had them take care of the other things. They really did excellent work and it is really great to find a group of honest mechanics, especially ones who don't want to take advantage of an inexperienced 23 year old. read more

Took my car here 2 weeks after having it messed up and just plain not fixed by a auto shop whose name I will refrain from stating... For now ;) These guys are awesome. They fixed my car the way it should have been fixed to begin with and I couldn't be happier. They didn't try to sell me a bunch of garbage that I really didn't need like the previous shop I had gone to and their price to fix my car wasn't horrible. They really seem like honest and professional and they are nice guys. I wasn't talked to like I was a moron which is always a plus too since a lot of auto shops tend to be that way towards women. My next import will definitely be coming to these guys. They pretty much rule. read more

Been here twice, and I know someone who frequents The Import Doctors. We are both satisfied customers. They are very capable, reasonably priced, friendly and personable, talented and can be trusted -- something rare in the world of mechanics. They not only SEEM honest but by all indications, they ARE honest. What I like, as well, is the quickness of quality service they offer. They put in a new starter in like 2 hours. Something rare: they will tell you when they can't do a fix as well as a competitor! If they can't fix it, they won't B.S. you. They will say go elsewhere, and they will give you recommendations. I appreciate that. They are in a good location (right behind Crack Park -- don't worry, the crack heads won't hurt you -- and in front of Mama's). I highly recommend. read more
