In the suburbs, there are eye doctors everywhere... In the one mile radius around where I live, there are 3 optometry offices, and in a 5 mile radius I think there are at least 10. I live in Fountain Valley but I drove all the way up to Lakewood to get an eye exam. Why? Because the quality of care here is worth it. I was referred to Pacific Vision Care by the notorious Howie C. who told me to ask for Dr. Derrick Woo. Dr. Woo is what anyone could hope for in a care provider: experienced, knowledgeable, and non-judgmental. Frankly speaking, I haven't had my eyes checked since at least 5 years ago, so I had some apprehension coming in for my checkup. From the moment I shook Dr. Woo's hand he made sure I was taken care of, informing me of every minute thing he was doing during the exam, while joking around and putting me at ease as I stared into various machines I don't even know the names of. I have known that I needed glasses for a while, but I didn't think it was urgent because I felt like I could still see clearly... Most of the time. I was watching Get Out (Jordan Peele's amazing film) in theaters and there is a point in the movie where the female lead was viewing something on her laptop that made the whole audience laugh... Went to see Dr. Woo because my eyesight was extremely blurry. Was prescribed new lenses. Upon receipt, I took them back because they were still blurry and he rechecked my eyes and told me that I had cataracts and gave me a slightly adjusted prescription. Unfortunately, my cataracts prevented the new lenses from seeing very well at all. Dr. Woo refunded my money, demonstrating that he truly cares about his patients and in making them happy. A small office tucked between Weight Watchers & H+R Block can be easily missed if you're not intentionally looking for it. This humble optometrist office at first glance doesn't seem much, but the friendliness of the staff and helpfulness of the doctor makes it all worth your while. I've known Dr. Woo for quite some time now, and aside from his genuine kind qualities, he is also incredibly knowledgeable in his expertise. Mind you, I'm not much of a talker when it comes to any sort of professional services. But, Dr. Woo's easygoingness allowed to me open up more and perhaps contributed towards the care of my eyes and areas of concern. Questions about lasik surgery, allergies, dailies contact lenses, approved make-up for contacts, etc.... were answered, accompanied by pamphlets to take home. I only had a pair of frames (purchased on a whim in Seoul several years back) that I needed lenses for, and despite the small purchase, the staff of Pacific Vision Care's customer service was exemplary. So I came here in an emergency situation where I needed glasses fixed and also get a spare set. Friendly service and Dr. Schnurr was very helpful in choosing the right frame and glasses for me. Since I got my glasses, Ive been complimented many times and I thank Dr. S. for his recommendations. Frames are pricey, but you can get them online for cheap, then just have them create the lenses for you and have them fitted accordingly. You'll save some $$$$ in the long run. Located in a strip mall, you can get a pie at Marie Callender's then work out at Max's Gym, then stop by Jenny Craig and pick up a video at Hollywood Video. Oh least I forget, order a bed also at Mattress Store.... A side note, they do take vision insurance, which is well worth it. The nice lady in charge there always makes sure you are well taken care of and are completely satisfied with your visit, which is very rare event in customer service nowadays. Enjoy. read more

After moving here, I went through my insurance's directory and found the closest optometrist to my house (yes probably not the best criteria but normally my only other criteria for an optometrist is that they have cute glasses) . I definitely did get lucky. Yes, I was weary because they are located in a strip mall and they have all kinds of kitschy things for sale inside ( that's his wife's part in the business). Dr. Schnur is a very personable guy and he is also on top of the latest technology as well. I got to take home pictures of the inside of my eyeballs as well as explaining what he can see by looking inside my eye. (He also was nice enough to tell me my eyeballs are better looking than my husbands, What a Gentleman!) His has an assistant as well and his wife is there most of the time. Either himself or his wife helps with glasses selections and I love the fact that she helps you find something that looks nice on you and she is willing to let you know in the nicest way if something doesn't fit well. Dr. Schnur always gives you a breakdown of your glasses how much they cost, what my insurance is paying for and he gives me a 20% discount on what is left out of pocket. Also there are tons of selections of high end glasses and sunglasses like Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Calvin Klein, etc. but he also carries glasses that are less expensive but still look nice. Only for Dr. Schnur and Wife, Sylvia, what was once a lovely family run business, is now under new ownership. Dr. Schnur is fantastic, love his sense of humour and he gets the job done. He and wife, Sylvia are very detail oriented and don't leave anything out. They have a new location, which is much smaller than the last but they still have the same selections of eyewear. The new owner was present while we were there, but never said hello or introduced himself. Nothing like The Schnur's. We will see Dr. Schnur until he retires.
