The dinosaurs are huge but then so are the piles upon piles of petrified wood and other rocks surrounding the building. I believe my husband was grateful they were closed, he seemed to relax a bit more as we strolled around the perimeter!! I definitely would have loved to get my hands on some of the fine specimens they had just laying in the dirt! Everywhere we looked it said they were open the afternoon we drove through town but unfortunately it was all locked up and no sign of anybody around. Since we found it on Roadside Attractions, we treated it as such and just enjoyed the unique dinosaurs and a chance to stretch our legs! Perhaps some day we'll return and one of the beautiful rocks will come home with me!

We stopped in to peruse the inventory and basically got into an argument with the crabby old guy who was manning the place. I was just curious on where they get all of their petrified wood, etc. and he told me I asked too many questions and then started to grill me on rocks and the origin of petrified wood??!! Really weird customer service. While my wife was shopping inside he followed me outside - he said he didn't trust me. Like I was going to shoplift a 100 pound rock... The more valuable stuff was inside anyway. What an old coot. Stop for the pictures and move on.

The shop is owned by Native Americans -- I believe from the Navajo tribe -- and you can really feel the authenticity and care that went into everything. Prices felt very fair, and there were tons of little trinkets and souvenirs to choose from. They even have a small museum section with fascinating items from a long time ago, which makes it even more special. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. I really appreciated that they allowed me to take pictures -- a lot of Native American shops don't, but they were very open about it here. Outside, the fun continues! There are plenty of cool photo ops -- from dinosaurs to an old car and other quirky displays. If you're ever traveling along this route, this is definitely a must-stop spot. Part way through the shopping I gleaned the information that The Aunt who owned the store recently passed on, so they may not be open on weekends for awhile. My girls and I just missed entering the Petrified Forest National Park near this entrance by about…read morean hour. So we paused at Crystal Forest Museum & Gifts for a while. Crystal Forest is not only a private gift shop NOT associated with the National Park, but they also a campground. Check this out if you are traveling with an RV or tent because Petrified and Painted Desert do not allow camping to my knowledge. The museum is near the RV parking area. A separate, larger gift shop is on the other side of the National Park entrance. I'm a fan of this shop because they sell a variety of petrified wood that you are not allowed to take from the parks. "Then how do they get the petrified wood?" My oldest asked me. I did not inquire about this with staff members. It was so dark and I knew I would be soon approaching winter storms, so I wanted to get back on the road. Restrooms were available. Arizona is more than just the Grand Canyon and Sedona... check this area out too!

Crystal Forest Museum & Gifts has a lot of interesting items that relate to the Petrified Forest…read moreand Painted Desert. This private gift shop is not part of the national park and is located outside the south entrance. They have a really nice collection of colorful petrified wood here. It is illegal to take petrified wood from the park, so this place is a great option to purchase some. Next to the gift shop is a campground with approximately 20 spots. Most sites have sheltered picnic tables. You can camp with an RV, tent or sleep in one of their teepees. Just check with the gift shop for availability. There is no camping inside Petrified Forest National Park, so this is your best option.

When you are standing there, you can actually hear the song in your mind. The place is well kept, and there were people there continuously stopping to take pictures. There is also a "standin ' on a corner" store, right across the street that sells items related to the song, Route 66 souvenirs, and other things. It's a large store, and the prices are reasonable. They do offer a military/veterans discount. The friendly lady was telling me that yes, they get people from around the world, coming to see the spot. The very first time I passed through Winslow many, many, many years ago, the main thing I remember, was the grinding poverty. This town still has its challenges, but Route 66, and this park, , have gone a long way in helping the revitalization of the town. This was a short stop, but a very fun stop. I'm glad I came. I did not see signage for its anticipated re-opening. The woman at the gate who took my national park pass was not at all chatty. Not welcoming. She also did not indicate that this center was closed. I still got out to walk around and check it all out. Then I decided I should use the restroom before my haul to Albuquerque. Denied! The restroom in the nearby dining hall was closed for cleaning. Lol. It would have been nice to have gotten my passport stamps and learn a thing or two, but maybe next time if there is one...

Didn't get to stay long at the Visitors Center as we took too long to do the Painted…read moreDesert/Petrified Forest drive. Had 15 minutes before they closed. I got my passport stamp, and we were able to quickly purchase postcards and a DVD that was on sale. Even though it was close to closing time there were plenty of people still in the center, but the staff didn't seem to mind they were still smiling. I do regret not being able to spend the time to look at the exhibits in the center, but next time I'll try not to dawdle on the drive through the parks.
