Do you have experience with this type of paint?" Reassurances all around. The painter, Doug, called me with a litany of "faux finish" jobs he had done that looked great. He painted the room with my paint, and after two coats, he packed up, reassuring me that it was going to look great when it dried. Well, after a day or two, it was clearly a disaster. I called Barbara, who came out to look and of course said that the job needed to be fixed. Score 1 star for FreshCoat. Barbara (admini) and Douglas (painter) met and decided that I needed to use paint that he was familiar with. This seemed totally reasonable, and I figured I should have known better than to buy house paint at Target. So I went to Lowes and purchased the primer, base coat, and metallic that they recommended. Douglas came back, forgot to use the primer (he read the paint cans wrong), and finished the job with his recommended paint. Again, he packed up and left with reassurances. The picture that I'm attaching isn't of wet paint, or of one coat when another was planned. This was the finished job, several days later. I called poor Barbara to complain again, and again she came out to look at it. I told her that I was not going to pay for the full rate of painting, and we settled on a price for their effort plus several days of work, etc. 800 dollars. I am giving two stars because I appreciated that the owners were apologetic, rather than trying to make it seem like I was crazy or too demanding. Barbara's parting words were "Doug usually does a really good job..." They didn't offer to send another painter to fix it, and I didn't insist, because at that point it had gone on for over a week and I was tired of having people in the house. I ended up getting boring, non-metallic paint and painting it myself. It was a total waste of a thousand dollars (when I add the cost of many cans of paint).

I had that quote beefier the end of the business day emailed to me! I called him on Wednesday evening to accept the quote and schedule for a couple of weeks out (his first available opening). He called back the next day to let me know that he got the message. He also asked if I wanted to have the work performed the following Wednesday since he had an opening become available but understood if o wished to wait until the original date thy he provided since some heavy furniture needed to move. I told him the sooner the better. His crew was there that Wednesday morning. They covered everything in plastic, went over a few things with me and i asked them to wood fill 2 small splintered areas which they did. By Friday, the 3rd coat of polyurethane was down and they removed all the plastic except on 2 doorways which I asked them to leave up. Minimal dust compared to previous jobs at other places I have owned. Cabinets, countertops and mounted television were all covered. The crew vacuumed several times as well. Floors look very nice. I highly recommend Charter Oak Flooring. I have several people that will be reaching out to him for quotes already after my experience.

So I wish I could say anything good about this company but I cannot…read more To be fair, I sued Brian Getto in small claims court and I didn't present my case well, likely because I didn't prepare my pictures well, and I should have gotten a better contract, but I liked Brian, and he did me wrong when I trusted him and I shouldn't once the job began. He took a job to replace a front door, some screen doors (front and back), and sand and refinish all the woodwork in the house. The first part he did fairly well other than breaking the wood under the door sill and needed to be fixed, but his woodwork is to use a word, pathetic. He used a power sander to strip stained wood to bare, and then realized, hmmm, this won't work, and then when he went to replace the rest of it, he hurried thru it, not even being sure the boards were attached to the wall, He did a horrid job staining the boards and attached boards with obvious defects to the wall (when the were attached at all), and many of the corners are not joined properly. Honestly, its an absolute disaster. He had to cut some boards to fit the baseboards and he even cut them wrong in his hurry to get out of there. Honestly, he priced it wrong, he was in over his head, and I made the mistake of trusting him. Oh, he is NOT registered as a MA home improvement contractor, nor does he carry the required insurances. I have forwarded that to the Attorney General's office.

After we interviewed a few contractors, we decided to switch to Action Carpet and Floor Covering. Now I know what you're thinking because there's nothing in their name to suggest they do full bathroom make-overs, but they sure do. Their Chief Estimator Kevin came to the house, asked us what we had in mind, took a bunch or measurements and in a few days e-mailed us with two options. We had a few back and forth e-mails, made some adjustments, went into the store to select subway tile for the shower walls and a mosaic tile for the shower floor, and in a few days we were all set with an agreed price and scope. On Day One the old vanity, sink, and medicine cabinet were demolished, the toilet was detached to be reset after the floor was replaced, the old shower door, shower ceramic tiles and drywall were removed, the new shower pan and base were replaced, and replacement of the new water resistant sheetrock on the shower walls began. We had three workers here most of the day and they were an all business, no-nonsense group, arriving promptly as promised. They removed all of the debris and left the workspace pretty clean. On Day Two the ceramic subway tile was installed on the shower walls and the ceramic mosaic tile was installed on the shower floor. Grouting for both should be tomorrow. On Day three, the tile was grouted, the shower ceiling light was installed, and installation of the bead board paneling on the walls began. Day Four was a big day!! The showerhead and water valve control were installed, new light bar, vanity and countertop were installed, the new vinyl plank flooring was installed, as were new window casings and floor heat vent. Day Five saw the new medicine cabinet and faucet installed, towel bar, and water lines connected. The existing toilet and TP holder were reinstalled. This pretty much finished the job, but there were some minor unresolved delays with the shower door and shower soap tray. It took a while to iron out those things and we did have some sales tax adjustments on things that were ordered but not included in the final job. We want to give a special shout out to Todd (the primary rebuilding contractor) and his assistant Tim. They were fantastic, meticulous in their craft, and a real pleasure to work with.
