I decided to try the Painting Lounge with a few of my friends to celebrate my birthday. We had a session for 5pm on a Sunday. At this time, the building is not unlocked, so pay attention to the address and buzz in. You may have to wait a bit! We signed up for a painting called Spring Moonrise Over the Dock and TJ was our instructor. It was a smaller class with probably 15 or so people. The ambiance was terrific, especially with the 90s throwbacks! TJ also did a good job modeling and explaining the techniques to be used as well as encouraging people to do what feels best for them. The instruction went at a rapid pace, so it is probably not the best for beginners. The thing is that I understand why TJ needed to go so quickly to stay within the class time limit including drying time. I just felt like I was always 2-3 steps behind. The other thing I would like to see would be individual feedback, especially for the trickier techniques. My final critique is of the specific image. TJ's final image did not look like the model on the website for the cherry blossoms. I know it's minor, but I have tried to do DIY painting following YouTube videos, and the blossoms are always where I messed up, so I was disappointed with my outcome because of that specifically. Don't get me wrong, our images look fine and reasonably like the advertised image. This session was discounted, so it was $30 instead of the regular $50. For the $30 price point, it was overall a great experience, and I would be down to try again! read more

This is a very fun activity for groups, friends' night out, corporate team building, etc. I came to the Chelsea location on a Saturday night. The studio is located on the fourth floor. I believe the same company has 3 or 4 other locations throughout the city so it's convenient to pick the one closest to you. I booked online when they had $34 tickets on sale. Booking was easy but I didn't get a confirmation email or anything. I emailed a copy of the invoice to myself from checkout just in case but when I arrived, they only needed my name to confirm my reservation. We came as a group of 3. There were only about a dozen people in the class, but the studio can accommodate large groups and had room for 40 people or more. They have lots of wine openers and cups. You can BYOB but no hard liquor. They also provide plastic aprons that provide pretty good clothing coverage but I would still recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting paint on. The artist did a fantastic job of walking us through the painting. We did an NYC skyline nightscape. As expected for painting novices, it was intimidating at first but she made every step easy and fun. She was motivating throughout the class and encouraged people's creativity, unique approaches, and diversions from the template artwork. She played a great music playlist of oldies hits and sang and vibed along to the music. She was attentive to turn down the tunes when she was giving instructions so everyone could hear her. Gave 4 stars only because the set up was a tiny bit cramped. Our easels were shoulder to shoulder with little space in between. It was hard to know where to place my wine glass to avoid risking splashes from the paint brush cups. Also, once we finished, it felt a little rushed to leave and we didn't have time to relax and take in our paintings or enjoy the atmosphere for a bit longer. But I totally understand that there may have been another class right after ours. I definitely recommend this experience! The artist was lovely and did a stellar job coaching us! read more

My friend and I had such a great time here that we're already planning for our next class. This was my first time at a BYOB paint and sip class. I was nervous since I have zero experience painting, but instructor Sabrina is a graduate from Parsons and is very knowledgable. I ended up "messing" up my painting at the beginning and she came over to help me when asked. She is also patient and will demo a part again if requested. There is everything you need for a BYOB including a fridge, bottle opener, and cups. I would recommend coming in at least 15 minutes earlier than your class time to get your bottle chilled. Check-in was very easy; you just needed to give your name. I came here with a Groupon and the online process for scheduling was hassle-free. I called on a weekend regarding an inquiry and someone picked up on the second ring. The person on the line also told me that they have deals every Sunday and so I should not waste my Groupon on the ones already on sale. The customer service here is pretty good. The venue itself is spacious so that you are not elbowing the person next to you. It is in an office building and I had no trouble getting in. The place was kept clean and there are two sinks. I came here with some friends for my first ever in person (not on Youtube) paint and sip. The place was a little confusing to find initially but such a great experience. Everyone is set up at their own easel with paint prepped and given a smock/apron to wear in order to their protect clothes. My 1st ever painting experience and it was awesome! I signed up with a few friends for the Starry Night painting (using an online deal), which was a 3 hour lesson. The 2 hour lessons are $50 ($25 with an online deal) and the 3 hour lessons are $65 ($25 + $15 with the online deal). We arrived a bit late at 7:05ish and the class was already tracing out the painting so to those who might be late, Word of Advice # 1 - get there on time! For those curious about the gender split, the makeup of the class was predominantly female, but I would say at least 35% of the class were males (most coming with their girlfriends). The classroom was a bit cramped because everyone was sitting next to each other. I imagined the set up to be a bit different where everyone would be facing the front, but that wasn't the case as everyone had to turn to their side to face the front. My friends and I sat towards the back since we were the last to arrive and unfortunately it was a bit hard to see the painting that the instructor was painting so Word of Advice #2 - sit towards the front to get a better experience! All night I felt I was playing catch up and since this location is BYOB, we brought some alcohol with us, but it was tough mixing the drinks with the lack of time we had and trying to paint simultaneously. There were a few people who brought alcohol with them, but ultimately it's difficult to sit and enjoy your drink because the class was pretty aggressive since Starry Night takes a long time to paint. Just when I finished a set of instructions, the next instructions were laid upon us so it was one after the other. Time just flew! The instructor was very good though and he gave very specific instructions. He was very clear and walked around with his painting once in awhile so that everyone could see up close what he did. If anyone needed extra paper towels to clean their brushes or extra paint, he was readily available to provide them for people. At the end, when everyone is done, you can go and get some clear bags to cover up your painting to take home, which is a very good idea. It was definitely a cool and fun experience and I'm already looking to come back! read more

I ended up coming on a Friday night with my boyfriend for a two hour class and had such a fun time. The class only has around ~10 people, but it looks like each class can fit ~40ish people. The class was super easy to follow and there was enough time to talk while waiting for layers of paint to dry. Our instructor, Vee, was hilarious! Loved her class, and she laughed at my better half's bad jokes so serious props to her. The Painting Lounge is BYOB, so do not forget your wine! They have plastic cups, wine openers, and a fridge, and they also sell water in case you forget yours. There are cubbies for you to store your belongings to keep stuff clean. They held a painting lounge event at my school and it was so much fun! Never did I think I could create anything that looked decent with my lack of artistic skills. The instructor, Jon, was super helpful and took us through each step. We were able to create multiple colors just using mixtures of yellow, red, blue, white and black using only three different sized brushes. Don't feel intimidated by the large blank canvas in front of you at the beginning of the leason. Trust me by the time you finish painting you will fall in love with your piece. A tip from me is don't rush! Take your time (not too slowly obviously) but its okay if you fall slightly behind the pace of instructor. They are pros at this while I was not so. But the end product was so gorgeous that I could 't believe I had painted that! I will most definitely be visiting the location in Midtown soon for another lesson! read more

I usually visit the Brooklyn Painting Lounge location, but one of the classes that I wanted to take (Picasso's, "The Kiss") seems to only be offered at the Manhattan location. So I sucked it up and made the trek over to the 14th Street venue. As other Yelpers have noted, it's pretty easy to get to. The building is kind of weird, but once you enter the studio on the fourth floor, you'll feel right at home! I can't remember the teacher's name for this class, but just like all of the other instructors that I've had at the Painting Lounge, she was extremely patient and kind. This painting was by far the most difficult of all that I have done with the Painting Lounge (the straight lines are pretty challenging and I feel like they leave more room for "error" or variation. It felt like there was more pressure to "get it right."), but the instructor reminded us that every painting comes out different and of course, there's no right or wrong to these things. As the end of the class, I definitely had a painting that I was proud of. In fact, it's hanging on my wall right now. When we were all done, the instructor offered to take pictures with our finished masterpieces, and offered frames for anyone that wanted to purchase one (the frames do look great). I LOVE the Painting Lounge. Both locations are excellent. I obviously prefer the Brooklyn one, just because it's a bit closer to where I live. However, I've heard rumor that the Manhattan location is now BYOB again (so if you're interested in drinking and painting, this should be your place! But call or email them to confirm the BYOB)! When NYC weather ruins plans and you want to do something fun, grab a bottle or two of wine and head over here. I used to go here all the time with an ex (a bit too much). To put things into perspective, by the time we broke up, I had 20 badly painted canvases laying in my home. It was a bit much so I took a hiatus for a while until a friend wanted to go. This was my first-ever paint-and-sip experience, and I had such a fun time! Sabrina, our instructor, was attentive, patient, and funny. My friend arrived a bit late and she was nice enough to help her catch up on the instructions that she missed. There were a few times when I cared a little bit too much about minute details and had to quicken my speed, but overall the class was definitely well-paced, as I never felt myself being bored waiting for others to finish. This was a great activity to do with a friend, as we were able to paint and chat at the same time as all of the other groups were doing. I had my birthday at the Chelsea Painting Lounge location-- and it was a hit. BYOB, everyone. The staff is super friendly and accommodating of everyone's drinking habits (this is important, people), plus overall you're bound to have a good time. I would say DEF register early because even if seats are open for the class you'd like to attend, you will have to come in late and you may not be able to catch up to where the class is in the painting. It's located really close to Union Square, which is very convenient for most people. Also, you have to buzz up and head to the 4th floor to get inside, so the space is very quiet and segregated from the busy street below. They have a fridge for you to place extra wine to chill, and they sell water and other beverages, too. The classes themselves are easy to register for online, so if you're planning to have a group of less than 15 or so people come, just register for a class that already exists on their website. Private events in this location have a minimum of around 24 people and max of 30, so be wary of this! They also have group rate discounts--just email them and they will create one for you to use at checkout! My group painted on a Sunday and I think it was a creative alternative to brunch; we all were able to be a little artistic and still have a great time. The one I chose for the event was also on a 40% discount from the original class price of $50. Some people in my group showed up and forgot to register, and the class was sold out, so they actually had to leave in order to guarantee the people who came late their seats. Our instructor would take us step by step through each part of the painting, and we were all pretty amazed at how well we did (especially after that 5th glass of wine). Great time with great people! We had a hilaaarious group, and then add drinks to that and things get just crazy. I organized this event for my moms 50th birthday and what a fun experience. I really wanted my first experience to be in a studio opposed to a restaurant, since I read reviews that its a better ambiance. The building where the studio is located is a tad sketchy but once you enter the studio all of that disappears. My group got there nice and early and reserved our seats and Raye was finishing setting up and super welcoming. The painting was so fun and the music playlist was awesome. A mix of old and new school, all varieties. My grandma was even moving haha. It's easy to be intimidated since some people are painting Picasso masterpieces while drinking but... Went with my little sister, had an really nice time. Background: wanted to get my sister something different for Christmas (last year) she used to paint as a kid and always enjoyed it. This is by far the best group painting class that I've been to, and I've been to ALL of the major ones in the city. LOCATION - I attended a class on Christmas Day down in the 14th street studio. It's a very accessible studio, merely steps from the NQR, 456, 123, PATH trains. WORKSTATION - As I sat down at my easel, I saw that my paintbrushes and color palette were already laid out for me. I didn't have to get up and pre-measure paints, or look for an apron. Everything was extremely organized. When I needed more paint, I would just call to Kevin what color I wanted, and he'd come over in a jiffy. INSTRUCTOR - This was the key factor in making my experience so wonderful. Kevin exuded patience whenever a fellow painter would have a mini freak out session that his/her painting doesn't look EXACTLY like the prototype. He would also offer artistic tips on how we could improve our work, and encouraged us to add our own flair to the painting. It had elements of an instructive art class, rather than a droning, paint-by-numbers kind of session. MUSIC PLAYLIST - This gets a mention of its own. It was so good, I had to put down my paintbrush, pull out my phone, and shazam a few songs throughout the night. I'd highly recommend this studio to fellow Yelpers who are looking for a group activity. (On the other hand, I went to the class alone, and still had a fantastic time just painting by myself). You start off tracing the basic outline of the painting and the instructor (who is very friendly) will help you pick, mix and paint your colors onto the canvas. Our instructor walked around every 10 minutes or so to check on everybody and offer suggestions. He guided us through each step but stressed that we should develop our own styles. The Manhattan location is BYOB and almost everybody brought wine, champagne, or beer. There's a refrigerator in the back, bottle openers, and plastic cups so drinking is highly encouraged. In fact, our instructor made a toast every 30 minutes so I was constantly refilling my cup. The instructor was so energetic and quirky and made everyone feel comfortable. They have selections including Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, and more, whereas Paint Nite's selections are often easier and paintings just made recently by the instructor teaching the class. Painting Lounge's Manhattan location indeed has BYOB now! Great for an evening painting class. (I however, took it on a Sunday morning/afternoon and just wasn't quite ready to start drinking). There are many colors of paints available so you don't have to mix the basic colors, and the instructor provides you with the paints that you need and refills anything you want as needed. Our instructor was very sweet and answered any questions I had regarding how to fix my painting. The only negative I have is that they have you trace the basic shape of the painting on pre-traced tracing paper, so it doesn't feel like you are just copying and tracing like a first grader instead of really creating the whole painting authentically yourself. Thankfully though you get to be super creative with all the colors and additional details, and there is nothing forced about what you ultimately have to paint. I'd definitely recommend Painting Lounge as a fun creative outlet! And now that they have BYOB, as a non-traditional happy hour! Ended up getting a Living Social deal for a 2 hour painting class in Manhattan for $25. We got the deal back in September but it took us a bit of time to decide on a painting. I ended up going last night. My friend wasn't able to make it so I made some new friends who graciously shared their wine with me :-) It was a fun group, an amazing instructor, and a great playlist! We painted Graham Gercken's "Rainy Autumn Day." It's a beautiful, difficult piece filled with vibrant red, green, and yellow. I got there a little before our class started and people were already tracing. There are cubbies and a coatrack in the back for you to put your stuff so it doesn't get paint on it. They also have a sink in the back with exfoliating soap so you can get all the paint off your hands at the end. I'd recommend sitting next the front so you can see what the instructor is doing. She was great and had a ton of energy, which made the class really fun. At the end, you can put your canvas in a plastic bag so it doesn't get dirty on the commute home. A whole lot of fun! My SO and I bought Groupons for $35 each and it was so worth it! This is a 2 hour class with a fun instructor and BYOB. The materials are set up before you come in - brushes, canvas, easel, and apron. The instructor goes around and squirts paint onto the paper plates and illustrates each step. The class gets progressively more fun as you become drunker. ;) Bottle openers, wine opens, and cups are provided too. There's even a mini fridge for you to chill your beers. If you need help, the instructor happily helps you! You can go as fast or as slow as necessary. I brought a bottle of wine and I was having so much fun that I almost dipped my paint brush in my SO's cup of wine. Oops! Thank goodness the paint is non-toxic. I've been twice and hope to soon return to this wonderful activity! read more

It was hard. I thought it was going to be way easier to do..but it wasn't. However, it was so much fun!! My girls and I have not had quality time in a while and this was the perfect excuse for us to hang out and create something different. The instructor (Chris) was nice and would walk around making sure that everyone was executing the assigned task properly. At times I did feel a little lost but I have to say that was mostly due to my lack of art knowledge and the difficulty level of the painting. You had to blend colors and go from dark to light..it was difficult! Or maybe the wine had already kicked in? Lol that being said yes! The manhattan location now allows you to byow yayyyy!! (Bk location is still working on it). Final notes to consider before coming here, there is a $25 groupon available, check that out first before purchasing the ticket at its full price. Also, look at all the painting options and truly pick something you want to create (we we're stuck with this option due to everyones busy schedule). Get here 10min early in order to settle down and not feel rushed and if you can sit by the front then do it bc then you can view exactly what the instructor is doing. Finally, bring a group of friends! It makes the experience 100x more enjoyable. We had jokesters in our class and they kept us entertained the entire time, so ppl are friendly and nice. I went here for my sister's bachelorette party and it was a lot of fun! They do a group special, so I think it is great for events such as these. I was an art major, so I didn't need any instruction, however I saw how happy everyone was when leaving- so I think it was definitely a winner. I dig this place! They have a lot of painting options to choose from, and I can't wait to go back. Our instructor Ryan for our Empire State x Starry Night was great. Class started on time, and went over its original 2hr mark by 40 minutes, but I didn't feel rushed at all. He was very patient, and friendly to everyone. He never hesitated to assist anyone falling a little behind. Awesome playlist he had on his iPod too! Only thing I can say is I DONT recommend the painting my group and I chose. It was easily the ugliest(sorry) and most amateur looking, yet hard to paint painting that painting lounge has to offer. That isn't anyone's fault though as I'm sure the painting must have some fans out there. Gonna be smarter next time and choose a better looking painting to paint! read more

I'd been to their bk location a few years ago, and had been wanting to go back, so I was happy to hear they had opened a Manhattan location. It still took me a little while to go back, but I finally went last night with two friends who had never done it before. So happily they enjoyed it as much as I did! We painted Henri Matisse's "Flowers on Chair." It was nice because it wasn't too difficult and it left room for everyone's own interpretation and color choices. I do not consider myself to have any real artistic ability, but I've done this 4 different times now and my paintings always comes out pretty well. They make it easy for you to have it turn out well and also the class is fun. Our instructor was Laura, who was very nice and encouraging. She explained all the steps well and it was easy to follow along. She also went around to offer help and like I said before, lots of encouragement. And since it's BYOB it's nice to have a glass (or 2) of wine, or whatever you bring, and talk with your friends. It's not a serious class with no talking, which would not be fun. I really love these classes and plan on going back! One day I'll have enough paintings to cover all the walls of my apt ;) read more
