Here's the thing. He is very talented, but will take your money, and never send the painting. I reached out to Clayton on July 7th to have him paint my two dogs so I can give them as a gift to my partner for our anniversary. It's now December 21st, after various back in fourths with him, he keeps swearing he'll send it. Telling me stories of his homelessness and going through a rough patch. I empathized and was nothing but kind. However after 5 months, I just don't think I'll ever see the paintings. I'm pretty upset as I paid him $165 for both paintings + shipping. Clayton scammed me out of $165. Do not pay him via Zelle. He was friendly at first, sent me pics of my painting in progress then asked for payment. I was very happy with the pics he sent, so I was happy to pay ahead of time. Then things with him went very awry. He told me the painting would ship on Monday and he would send me the tracking number. About a week after that when I inquired about the tracking number, he told me that he did not ship the painting as agreed. In a quite strangely written text conversation, Clayton explained to me that the painting was in his car, but that he had 'lost his car in a casino parking lot' in Las Vegas. He would need to get his car out of impound, and that he was 'taking a greyhound back to LA. I would have to wait. Ok I thought, crap happens, he will make good on it. Several weeks went by. I asked him again when my painting would be sent, and he explained in a pissy tone that my painting as well as several other customers paintings were still lost in his car in Nevada. He assured me that he would ship the painting if I just gave him more time. Again, giving him the benefit of the doubt, I decided to wait his problems out. Fast forward 3-4 months, I contacted him again via text asking where the heck the painting I paid in full for was. I said look, I never received it, can you just send me a new one? His response and attitude was in effect, "I shipped that weeks ago, you should contact the post office for your missing package". I have a USPS account that sends me a daily summary of all incoming mail and packages. When I confronted him with the screen shots showing I had daily status emails from the post office showing no packages were sent, he ghosted me. My dog passed away and of course it was devastating . Then I found Clayton with Paintmydog. He did the most beautiful painting of my dog Brooklyn. Everyone including myself was blown away by his talent! Everyone wants a painting now. I'm trying to get pics of friends dogs because I think they would make great Christmas presents. I normally am not 1 to brag but I can't help it. Was totally blown away! I now I have a beautiful painting on canvas of my furbaby. I can't thank Clayton enough, but I thought this might help him or help anyone else who is heartbroken and needs a beautiful painting of their pet. Wish I found him sooner. I think he stole someone else's art work to advertise online. He has an ad on Craigslist as others here have said, where he offers to paint for free, sends photos of the progress, then you get to decide whether you want to buy it or not. However, like others have noted, he asks for a small deposit first before starting the work. That makes sense as I think all creatives should get paid, or partially paid, before starting any kind of work. As others mentioned here, as I got the progress pictures, I started doubting whether the art in the Craigslist ad was made by the same artist or person I was speaking to via text. It looked like it was painted by a completely different person, so I said I didn't want the painting. When I told him I didn't like the painting, he started threatening me (I'VE INCLUDED SCREEN SHOTS OF OUR TEXT CONVERSATION IN THE PHOTOS SECTION HERE) and tell me I was an asshole, etc. It's unfortunate. read more

My experience with Clay, the artist, was great! Overall Clay is an amazing artist and very reasonable in his pricing considering the cost of materials and the amount of time it took him to create these amazing pieces of art. A detailed experience is down below. I first saw his post asking for free animal models to do paintings of on Nextdoor and I was interested after looking through the examples that were included in the post. I messaged him on Nextdoor expressing my interest in having a cat painting done for my grandma as a birthday present. Clay responded promptly and explained his process; which in short is see what picture the client wants painted then suggest a size canvas that would best work for that particular subject. Once the size of the canvas is chosen Clay gives the base price for that particular sized canvas as well as ask if the client wants certain elements from the original painting, for example a blanket that is in the foreground, and he will give tell you how much the add-on will be. When everything is agreed upon he will start painting and send plenty of update/work in progress pictures as he goes, taking any critiques and working with them along the way. So with this knowledge I texted him the first picture that I wanted painted of two of my grandma's cats cuddling (image #1). Clay suggested two different sized canvases that he could do the painting on, the first being 11x14" the second being 16x20", he also suggested that the 16x20" canvas would be better since he could put more detail in it. He included what the prices would be. I told him that the 16x20" would be perfect and thus he got started on it on August 7, 2021. I then asked him if it would be possible to do a horse painting, to which he said yes he could so I sent the picture of my grandpa's horse Joker (image #2) as well as one that should off his coloring better as a reference (image #3). He provided some canvas size options that would work for the horse painting, I went with the 8x10". Clay was awesome enough to give me a discount since I was commissioning two paintings at the same time. By 7:48 that night, he sent me a progress picture of the cat painting which at this point was just a sketch on the canvas. He also asked if I would want to have all the details of the background from the original picture in the painting, which I didn't so he suggested a light blue as a background and the blanket for the foreground. By 9:16 that night he sent another update picture in which he had started applying the paint. The next morning, August 8, 2021, he sent an update saying he was nearly done and provided three different options through which I could provide payment of a $20 deposit. By 9:45am that morning he sent a progress picture and at 10:08am he sent a picture of the final painting but realized that there was a harsh line and decided to fix then sent another picture. By 10:12am the cat picture was finished and Clay started to work on the horse painting so that they could be shipped at the same time. A few minutes later Clay sent a family picture of him and his daughters saying that it was so I could put a face to the artist and he let me know how highly appreciative he was that I commissioned him for the paintings and how the money earned was going to pay for his two oldest girls' school sign-up fees. At 2:13pm on August 8, 2021, Clay sent the first update picture of the horse painting and asked what I would like the background and foreground to be, as well as how much the add-on would be. At 2:50pm that same day he sent the final painting picture of the horse along with how much it would be which included the shipping cost. He gave me an estimated day as to when he would be mailing it. The paintings arrived August 14, 2021 with image #4 and #5 being the final products. read more

After finding Clayton on Craigslist Free like many others, I was so pleasantly surprised by his service. He was always very quick to reply and so thorough/helpful in his messages. I opted for a "baby" photo of my pup Roscoe and he had me send over multiple to find the best photo to recreate. I told him to use his best judgement and surprise me. Safe to say, I was not disappointed one bit! It turned out so beautifully, detailed yet not overdone. Clayton was great about providing timely updates and such quick service. I found this guy on Craig's list advertising free portraits of ur dog, which u may purchase if u are satisfied. Upon contacting him, he said he needed a $10 dollar deposit in which I reluctantly obliged. Upon receiving pictures of the portrait, I informed him that I did not personally care for it. He immediately became defensive so my boyfriend responded politely explaining that we did not feel the portrait was worth the $102.50 he was asking for, but he was welcome to keep the $10 dollar deposit for his supplies. At this point he called my boyfriend a dumb*** and proceeded to verbally assault him. I highly recommend not doing business with this individual. read more

Went to order a painting from this guy after finding his ad on craigslist and he got pissed when I asked for a page with reviews to ensure he actually sends the work to the people. He got extremely defensive and then told me he doesn't trust me and to go away. Not a good way to make a future customer feel welcome. From the start all he had to do was send his facebook link showing happy customers (mine wasn't working) and I'd have been stoked. I learned about artist on a craigslist ad under FREE section. I was impressed how genuine he was in mannerism and talent. I wanted to capture my animals as babies the day I got them and looking back wish I did not offer more current pics as requested because the whole concept of capturing them young shifted- he is spot on in his talent though. He said he could not do "quality" work off photos I offered but anyone "nostalgic" would say quality did not matter as much as receiving "something" as my heart saw it- I did not have too may young pics but offered all I had. I offered them as a birthday gift to spouse and he agreed that the photos of them young would of been more what we both had in mind. 07/06/17 CREATIVEHAN 402-935-7733 CA transaction made same day I saw ad yet he offers to paint subject than show you it than you decide what size you want and make purchase- I just paid it immediately as I was in a cave at that moment and gave the artist full control. The one star under ***** FIVE ***** STARS is because I did feel what my mind and heart seeked was not met yet it was confirmed they were not good enough pics for him. WARNING to anyone that is considering getting a painting from this person before seeing what his work actually looks like - it is not as advertised and the artist is aggressive and rude! When I didn't want to get more paintings from him, he started text messaging me ridiculously long messages swearing at me and basically yelling at me for not liking what he had done! I found him on the free section of craigslist. I felt bad asking him to do any work without knowing a general idea of what it would cost in case it was terrible, he gave me a quote of approximately $35 so I wasn't expecting amazing quality, but what I received was something a child could have done. Even compared to the photographs that he had online, I was very shocked at the outcome of my painting. When he sent me a photo, I said that it was coming along nicely, then he told me that was the finished painting- I almost fell out of my chair! I was very surprised but continued to be polite and even told him that it looked great to see if encouragement would make him want to improve his work. It did not. The painting came out terrible and I regret being so nice about it. I should have paid for his supplies and not accepted the painting. I would normally never leave a negative review for anyone, especially for an up-and-coming artist, but this guy was such a jerk and I want to save anybody the hassle of having to deal with this guy in the future!
