The staff on the phone is great. The painters were awful. You can see the response from the owner but you can also see I'm Elite 20 and most of my reviews are positive. Paintzen had great reviews on YELP so I called. I spoke with Jared in sales and he was convincing that going with Paintzen was better. He said they vet painters and make sure they send high quality painters. Over promise, under deliver and not cheap! We had to to paint our cabinets . Jared went over and over how the team would clean the grease off the kitchen cabinets first and how important the prep for cabinets is. The team didn't wipe at all. They sanded and didn't cover anything and never wiped. So confusing and anxiety producing as I'm trying to hire professionals. Don't count on your house being cleaned after they sand or scrape paint. They don't even have a vacuum. I guess the paint chips make it easier for them to ignore the drips. The final cleanup was a joke. We had to do it ourselves. The guarantee doesn't include getting your money back for a poor job, just more people with the same issues coming back. The first team left a razor blade on the floor by our bed . They did not take the time to protect anything or prepare the walls. I see zero reason to go with Paintzen. As a family, we could have found sub-par painters on our own and managed them better. You tell the Paintzen guys that the painters are not covering the floor and doing sloppy work. The "managers" offsite say they tell the painters to improve but the behavior continued. Every day it was exhausting to be the bad guy and point out that if they are going to fill in the holes from the bookcase, why not do a good job instead of leaving tiny holes. The head painter said "the other guy did that." In addition, they use their own Paintzen-brand paint. The colors didn't match exactly, and the paint didn't seem to cover well. The painters on site don't change their behavior based on what the invisible people at Paintzen tell them to do so everyday I'm stressed and scrubbing gray paint off my marble floors and finding shoddy work like painting over tape and hair and sections of wall that were missed or need a second coat. The second day of the job, only one painter showed up for painting the entire interior of a 2-floor home. The lead Painter said the other painter wouldn't respond about where he was or why he didn't show up. I thought going with Paintzen would prevent that. It doesn't. Except for the lead painter, there has been a revolving door of people. None want to take ownership, and none take pride in their work. I showed them paint drips that had dried. They said the previous painters who did our house before left those. How hard would it be to sand it down before painting? One or two drips and they are unwilling to sand them down before the second coat. I wipe down all of our bathroom walls and scrubbed all the grease off of them after I saw they didn't do much prep for my cabinets. We have worked all day every day on the weekends to have the house ready for the painters. We missed some clear tape on the walls and they just painted over it. Every single nail hole on the wall by our stairs was not filled in or sanded. They just painted over holes. See the photos I attached. They say more than I ever could. We had a simple hook on one beam, and they painted around it. Really? You can't unscrew one hook? Or ask me about it so that I can? See the photo. Mind boggling. There was no ownership by the painters, no pride in the work, no willingness to do even the slightest bit more. On our semi-gloss painted doors, they wanted to rush so fast that they did not let the coats fully try and put more paint up. With paint that is not fully dry, the tacky nature of the first coat meant a weird texture on most of the doors and in our bathroom. There is little to no prep on anything from nail holes to around hardware and we had to have them come back and fix several areas. The photos tell the story. Sloppy! I could have found sloppy painters all on my own. They say satisfaction guarantee but they sent back people that still don't know what they're doing. We gave up. So discouraging. Look at the photos. I can only post so much with my direct review but there are more under the photo section. They tell the story. They talk about how they simplify the process. Nah. Total waste of our money. I greatly regret going with this company. The response from the owner said it all. Instead of getting curious and trusting that I i le my experience, he writes it off . While I'm glad the bathroom ceiling was finally painted, Paintzen was frustrating, disorganized and sloppy. Thankfully the painter did show up in the end and finished the job. I placed a Work Order online. Their online interface is severely glitchy and needs to be immediately overhauled. The workflow does not execute properly. I'm shocked they've been in business since 2015. Perhaps they're having trouble scaling. When placing the Work Order online, it will send multiple orders for one submitted Work Order / quote so you will be e-mailed and contacted by multiple agents in the office, all unaware the other one has made any contact, even though you already got on the phone to clarify the Work Order with one agent, who claims she will delete the others and let her colleagues know so that everyone is on the same page. Of course, this doesn't occur. And no one knows what's going on or seems to have any logged data about the previous conversations. I requested the ceilings, walls, door, baseboards and window trim for a small bathroom in a small city apartment. Nothing fancy. Just white paint, to update an old coat. I paid for the paint out of my own pocket and had it ready to go. I even staged the space and ensured all bathroom fixtures were covered and drop cloths ready. The painter arrived nearly two hours past the time Paintzen told me to prepare for his arrival. He showed me his app which showed an Exclusion of all parts, except for trim and ceiling. *Palm meets forehead* The painter then says he will not begin until he receives notification with an updated Work Order from Paintzen. I call the Work Order Manager assigned to my project. He says the info on his end shows I didn't order those things. I have the Work Order e-mail to show they are included. He then says that the price I received wasn't the right one, so within 20 seconds I see he's updated the app and has tacked on an additional $241+ to the service. Good thing Yelp offers a $50 off promotion. The painter then tells me the new Work Order has now removed the window frame but added on the other services. *Again, palm meets forehead* Whenever they make changes to the Work Order ticket it seems to reset all of the options and they're always missing something. The end result was fair and the painter's quality was decent, though sloppy and rushed looking in some parts, but I don't like feeling taken advantage of in business but Paintzen made me feel that way. It seems like it was a bait and switch, and I noticed others mentioning very similar scenarios of being charged extra, at the last minute, despite fully filling out their Work Order request. read more

I had the best experience with Paintzen. They were easy to communicate with during the quote process. I had two small projects to hang wall paper on accent walls in two separate rooms and they gave us a fair quote. They were timely and did a stellar job! I was worried about the installation because the wallpaper prints I chose had complicated patterns, but their attention to detail and making sure the patterns lined up was excellent, it looks seamless! They also went above and beyond helping me in a pinch. As a new home owner I unfortunately mis-measured my wall and did not order enough wallpaper to completely cover it. I ordered more wallpaper and worked with their team to have someone come back onsite to finish the job. I really appreciated them coming back to help me out even though it was my error in the first place. My experience with Paintzen has been mostly frustrating, and it's led me to believe they are completely unreliable. I was excited to use Paintzen for our remodel because our local paint store had advertised their service, their website worked well, and scheduling seemed like it would be a breeze, like Uber for painting. Unfortunately, they've lost my trust and business by canceling at the very last minute. The first couple of interactions were great. However, communication with the person who prepared my quote quickly deteriorated. My two phone calls to my salesperson led to someone else taking a message that was apparently never received. I followed up by email both times and waited 2-3 days for a response. I get it, things are busy. But when my salesperson told me two weeks ago that we were on the schedule, I believed her. And I said that would be fine but asked her to let me know if there was something sooner. She said she'd look into it and she didn't want to collect a deposit before the date was determined. Two days before we were originally scheduled to start, I email her to confirm after hearing nothing from her. What do you know, her availability is now the week after what she initially proposed. She didn't acknowledge anything was off. Despite our lengthy communication, she seemed to not know any of the details of our $4k project. It's been many phone calls and emails that amounted to nothing. So 3 weeks later, we're back to square one and in a massive time crunch to find a replacement. I had the worst time trying to find a painter to paint my bedroom. Several came to take a look and said they'd get back to me and never did! I was coming to terms with having to paint myself, when I found Paintzen. Talk about easy! I gave them the information online, and a rep got back to me right away. He asked me some additional questions, and poof! Scheduled painters right then and there. Later that day, I have to reschedule, and that was super easy as well. Now the painters. They were great! They did a good job, were neat and finished that room in one day! They had to cover a very dark teal with a light gray and did it perfectly. The trim work looks great as well. I highly recommend Paintzen for all your painting needs. They really took the hassle out of finding a painter. I will use them for any painting needs in the future for sure! read more

I can't say enough awesome things about Paintzen - as an interior designer, I usually have my go-to contractors for work on projects; but we were going to do bold black & white stripes on a wall in a narrow hallway, and I wanted to make sure the painters on this job were skilled in this sort of precision tapework + leveling, so that the stripes would be perfect. Not only was Paintzen meticulous about the whole job (from set-up to the actual painting to clean-up), but they were also super responsive. Stephen, the General Manager of the San Francisco leg of the company, is extremely professional, fair, and holds the painters that get contracted through Paintzen to a very high standard. After contacting them initially, I had Stephen out to the job site for an estimate, got a formal quote, and started the job within days! I really appreciated that Paintzen was able to get started so soon. Also, I have to say that it was super impressive and much appreciated that on both days of painting, the painters arrived exactly on time. My husband and I moved into our home about six years ago. The previous owners had painted to upper half of the wall and the ceiling blue with 'clouds' (it was a kids room). We didn't feel the need to do anything with it right away so we left it alone. Recently I've decided to start updating things around the house. New closet doors, fresh paint on the baseboards, new faucets, etc. I decided that I was no longer okay with the wall in that room anymore. I originally thought that I could go at it alone but quickly realized it would be best left to the professionals. I contacted the company through email via Yelp and got a quick response from John. I applaud him for being so patient with me in figuring out the measurements of the room, the color I wanted and so on (as I have no idea what I'm doing). As far as the color, I just wanted the room white (not keeping in mind that there are many different shades of white.) I sent him a photo of the white that's on the lower half of the wall and he quickly sent me 4 different shades that he personally thought would be the best match. After corresponding for a few days (and he was quick with each response and very helpful), I decided today to go ahead with the hire and we scheduled an appointment for this coming up Monday 3/16 for 9-10 am. That's fast! I made a quick call to him to go over everything and pay my 10% deposit fee (the rest to be charged the day the job is complete). I am so excited to finally be getting rid of the unmatched color/pattern and have everything mesh together. I've already moved out all the furniture in the room (since we don't have kids yet, we turned it into an office) but the computer desk in there is rather large and very heavy. I've had NO luck getting it to move, even just enough away from the wall to work around), John assured me that the painters will be able to move it out and put it back when the job is done. Whew! I first thought the asking price was a bit high but I guess I never really put much thought into it before; it's not like it's easy work; after doing some basic research, I quickly realized that the price point is spot on and makes total sense so I'm more than happy with their quote. John makes the process super easy; he's very kind & patient. He does his best to make you happy, he's informative and just a pure pleasure to deal with via email & telephone. I will definitely be back with an update as soon as the job is completed but I'm positive that it'll go smoothly and look wonderful. Thank you, John & Paintzen! UPDATE: 3/16/15 The painter arrived on time this morning and got right to work. Very friendly guy! He even helped move the heavy computer desk away from the wall; when I had NO luck with it on my own. He took his time to make sure that everything came out the way I wanted it, and it did. He also made a run to pick up some more paint (at no additional cost to me) to ensure that the blue was completely gone. He cleaned up after himself before he left (I love that!) and moved the desk back as well. John even emailed me while the painter was here to check on how everything was going (although I didn't get a chance to check my messages until hours after the job had been completed). My experience with Paintzen never really got off the ground. After leaving a message on Yelp for a quote to paint the exterior of my house, I got a reply asking for my address. Then I got an email stating that my house was built in 1944 & he needs a letter verifying that the asbestos was removed before they will even come over to look at the house in person. I replied... Please reference Patricia's review below. These people are NOT painters nor painting contractors. As it was discussed to me, they are the "Uber" of painters meaning they are middle men. I knew something was amiss when I sent detailed information (window/door count,width, height, depth of building, room count, areas that had issues, etc. Etc. Etc). As a professional project manager, I know how to prepare info so that bids can be accurate. When he arrived, it was like he read nothing nor knew very much about construction, painting, etc. When he was calling trim pieces by incorrect names, I kind of scratched my head. I did the walkthrough and then he was doing measurements of every room (vs just taking pictures and doing calcs based on info provided). I always ask about the crew. Last thing I want is to hire a licensed contractor who pulls people off the boat/Cesar Chavez. I want experienced painters. That's when I learned he just subs it out even though I asked if they were a licensed painting contractor, bonded, insured, etc. At that point, I cheerfully and gleefully showed him the door. Paint zen was very responsive and quick on the emails especially John. He walked me through the steps and gave me an estimate for various combinations of options. Luis did a great job painting my kitchen, dining room area, and a wall of the living room. He removed the outlet covers so paint wouldn't get on them. He helped move my fridge to paint the wall behind as well. He did a great of a work that I offered him a coke. He had been working pretty hard from around 9 to around 2 30 pm. One more update - this is a great service for our apartment building. No longer do I have to paint the places myself - we are coming up to the time when all the apartments turn over so I am already getting ready for another round of paintzen work. Last year they painted a few of our double-hung windows shut - but when I mentioned that they were super apologetic and responsive. They offered to come back and open them but I told them not to worry about it (I just did it myself). They also recently hung a bit of wallpaper (which I didn't know they did). We may eventually branch out to try some of their other services I learned about they provide like IdeaPaint and/or Stikwood (if my boss will let me!) Or I may use them at my own office. We had (nearly) our entire apartment painted by Paintzen and had a great experience. I got a quote on my phone in about 5 minutes, accepted the price, and had it scheduled a couple days later. I worked with someone from Paintzen to confirm the colors, the finishes, etc. and to coordinate logistics. They worked on the apartment for about a day and a half, and were out of there. Paintzen and its manager-people seem unable to let this go. The first, now-DELETED "reply" from Kristen, attempted to put me in the wrong (just as Jared tried). There's MORE cynical quibbling in Kristen's "new" response here, about how thoroughly they "vet" all painters, which she seems to think, "proves" that they are not simply referring customers to independent painting contractors. BUT - what I say about Paintzen is right there in the "terms and conditions", on THEIR website. Those "Ts & C's" state that: this is NOT a paint company, or a licensed contractor ... they do NOT EMPLOY painters ... they accept NO RESPONSIBILITY for the final results of any job ... they only act as go-betweens, putting customers in touch with painters ... all work contracted "through" them is between the customer and the painter(s), as regards final satisfaction about work done. In response to Kristen's original (now deleted) reply to me, I copied & pasted that entire section of the "terms and conditions" right out of their website. All that has now disappeared, maybe because it was attached as a reply to her comment, which she of course deleted, so those details are no longer readable right here. But I urge potential customers to go to their website, scroll all the way to the bottom of the landing page (a gray area) and click on "terms and conditions". Kristen is ALSO still trying to make this seem like it's all about the "lead issue" - trying to make it sound like I am ignorant about the FACT of lead being a dangerous substance. Duh! She's also trying to make it sound like I tried to insist on, or force, some painters to come here and "be endangered". Poor Kristen seems to have some serious weakness in the area of reading skills, since she is STILL NOT GETTING that I IMMEDIATELY asked Jared HOW or WHERE I could actually GO AHEAD AND GET that cert-exam of my home's exterior, but Jared (stunningly uninformed, it seems, about the industry he is working in) just had NO IDEA. THAT was the first annoyance - that I was told they WOULD NOT do the job, THEN told that it WAS possible for homes this age to be painted, BUT there had to be a certificate ... BUT when I made it clear I wanted to make the effort to GET that certificate, Paintzen showed NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER in working with me to solve the problem. The OTHER very offensive issue about the way this company does business, is that there was an attempt to talk me into a service I NEVER WANTED, & NEVER ASKED FOR (interior painting of "a couple of rooms, any rooms" in my house). (I HAD already paid $450 to Angie's List, to be held in Paintzen's name until that value of work was performed.) And although I told him I DIDN'T WANT OR NEED any INSIDE PAINTING, he PERSISTED in trying to sell me on the idea. When a company appears to provide a particular service (based on their advertisements and website information), and then a customer comes along wanting that service, and they tell the person that THAT SERVICE is NOT AVAILABLE to THAT PERSON, but "HEY, WE'RE READY TO COME & PERFORM A TOTALLY DIFFERENT SERVICE YOU DON'T WANT, FOR THE MONEY YOU HAVE ALREADY DEPOSITED" - that rings like a BAIT AND SWITCH style business practice. (Which is illegal in California.) Since Kristen seems to imagine I need her to lecture me on the DANGERS OF LEAD, I still want to know WHY she is IGNORING THE FACT that I expressed a SERIOUS DESIRE to Jared, to get the NECESSARY INFORMATION about WHO TO CONTACT AND HIRE for exterior "certification" -- so there would NOT, in fact, have ever been "LEAD DANGER" here, by the time Paintzen would have come to do the job. I made it IMMEDIATELY CLEAR to Jared that I wanted to follow whatever government-dictated regulations were necessary, and to do WHATEVER was REQUIRED in order to GET MY HOUSE EXTERIOR PAINTED. But Jared had NO INTEREST in even trying to retain my custom, by (for instance) saying that he was, so far, uninformed - but would follow up & find out for me. And yet, weirdly, neither Jared nor Kristen had any problem with Jared re-purposing his ONE phone call to me, with an UNCONDITIONAL offer to send painters to work on the INSIDE of this same house (the 1942 INTERIOR presumably, equally likely to contain LEAD). But, no worries there, for some reason. I just don't understand why you, Kristen, are NOT GETTING any of the actual issues here, and keep on trying to invent a set of "alternative facts" to fit your preferred scenario of what my complaints and comments about your business practices ACTUALLY ARE. Potential customers, take note. Paintzen wants to hide the truth about the nature of the "service" they provide. They rush to put everyone else but themselves in the wrong, with red-herrings and misinformation. They tried to talk me into a "substitute service" I never asked for or wanted. Maybe they do 'vet' good painters that they will then 'put you in touch with'. But what IF you have a problem? I'm not even a client, and look what they're laying on ME. read more

We just moved into a new office and were shopping around for some whiteboards, but traditional whiteboards are surprisingly expensive for how small (and ugly) they are. We wanted to have a few walls painted with IdeaPaint, but we didn't want to deal with the hassle of finding a painter we trusted, comparing prices, etc. PaintZen immediately came to mind, so I decided to give them a try. I couldn't ask for more out of a painting service - they have amazing customer service and ended up costing way less than I was expecting to pay. They were also great at accommodating our tight timeline (they were in our office painting less than 48 hours after I first talked to them). Although the actual paint job was fine, I'm giving a two star review because of my overall experience with the company. They say they want your pain project to be "zen" but mine was not. Communication at first was great until I signed the contract. There is a one hour window for the team to arrive. The first day they were 20 minutes late and I was not notified about the delay. I expressed my frustration and asked to be kept informed of their arrival time as much as possible. The next day the arrived at the very end of the arrival window (so on time but did not give me any updates as I had asked). The biggest reason I'm giving a low rating (I wanted to go with 2 stars but that's not accurate overall) is the clean up was unacceptable. There were paint chips all over different parts of the floor and on my sofa and other furniture. My black dresser now has white pain spatter all over it since they did not cover it when painting. I know they did cover other pieces of furniture so I'm not sure why this was overlooked. I've had lots of work done over time at my house and this was the worst clean up job I've seen. I complained to my project manager and his response was, we strive for a "zen" experience, sorry yours wasn't. After quickly inputting our job details online (how many rooms, trims, ceiling height, ideal schedule, etc.), I received a quote for the work. We were looking to have an accent wall painted in our office and a refresh done on all of the trims. This "small job" proved difficult to schedule with a more traditional painting company because most painters wouldn't take it on, but Paintzen was awesome and scheduled the job within a week! I decided to go with Paintzen instead of a Yelp-reviewed painter, mainly because I was burned by a highly rated Yelp plumber over a year ago and decided to stick with people/companies who are obviously still trying to build their reputation. When I discovered that Paintzen is a start-up that's new to the Bay Area (out of New York), I figured I would get good service, and I was right. Go online to their website and you will find a link where you can get a quote based on the details of your job. You'll get an email quote from the New York office (at least I did) and you can choose to book it or not. My job was fairly simple, probably the least expensive of the options. When I emailed back with questions and to confirm the job, I got a personal email from John, who seems to be in charge of the SF office. Dealing with him was pretty nice and efficient. So far so good. The day of the job, they sent a painting contractor named Mark. He showed up right on time, brought all the tools for the job, and indulged me when I asked to be able to watch him cut a line and roll out the paint. He made it look easy. Having already tried my hand at painting another room in my place, I knew this was not the case. Looking at the finished product, I realized that a professional paint job is just like any other job for which a license is required--it just looks (and is) better than one that a typical homeowner can do for herself. So if you have a nice place and want the best job for your money, go with a pro. Especially if you're going to buy that expensive-ass Benjamin Moore paint, which is what I had been using anyway before I contacted Paintzen. Turns out, it's their preferred paint, so at least they know quality...if they had recommended the Behr line from Home Depot that would have been an automatic deal breaker. Anyway, I highly recommend Mark based on the job that he did. My bedroom looks beautiful, exactly the color I wanted and painted with precision. Not only that, he is truly a nice guy. Ask for him if you're in the East Bay! Thank you Paintzen for delivering an excellent service from beginning to end. P.S. One more thing--If you are like me and have a place you are really trying to get design perfect, do not rely solely on an online color visualizer to pick your colors. You can do so to get an idea of the colors you want, but I would recommend going into the paint store directly and buying samples to paint swatches onto your wall. Warning: This could get expensive. Ben Moore sample pots are $7-$10, depending on how much the guy behind the counter likes you. I spent about $60 in samples to find just the right color but it was worth it. I eventually hired this company to paint my hallway - it was a stressful and bizarre experience. Because I wanted to give them another chance, I tried to get a quote about painting a bedroom. In the quoting process they ask if there is furniture that would need to be moved there was, so I selected this option. As a followup I included a link to the small bed that would need to be moved to complete the proposed job. The gentleman helping me with the quote then asked me why I sent it and then said it would be extra. I had to ask again how much (BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO GET A QUOTE). I am so shocked to see the good reviews of this company. They are difficult every step of the process. read more

i filled out the info online and got a quote quickly. I received a phone call from them and after a few minutes, I quickly realized what Paint Zen is.... a broker. They are NOT the painters who will do your work. You will NOT enter into a contract with Paint Zen. They offer no warranty, insurance, etc. That is all between you and the painting company they find for you. Once a painting company that has signed up with them accepts your bid, bye bye Paint Zen. Personally, I'd rather deal directly with the painting company myself. I'm sure PaintZen takes their cut and as the customer, I'd rather all the money i spend go to the paint company, not to a middle man. Just know what you are getting when you go this route. Paintzen = Painless :)) I had them hired for painting my whole apartment, ceilings included. I called in on Friday and they had somebody to send over on Tuesday. Very fast! They bought the paint too. I had shopped around and I got the best quotes from Paintzen! I worked with Greg and he was very responsive and answered all of my questions. They were able to provide a painter within a week whereas other painters I would have had to wait over a month. Eduardo was an excellent painter and very fast! My kitchen looks great! My initial quote was via photos and was higher then when the painter arrived and realized it required less work. I notified Greg and he adjusted my quote to a lower price immediately! Paintzen was a good find...they did make the quoting, scheduling, and color selection processes very easy for my condo that I had to repaint before turning over to new tenants. The crew they brought in was good...showed up on time, did a nice job, left the place pretty clean when finished. I find an email with the subject line of "hey" from someone named Megan. Call me old fashioned but Hey doesn't seem like what you would enter in the subject line for a professional business, especially one coming into your home to paint. read more
