Got there at 7:30 for the 8:00 opening and we're #7 and #8 in line, but that's part of the fun, believe it or not. Good conversations with like minded folks. A stack of flapjacks had thick but yielding discs with an alluring pan pattern, served with whipped butter and real maple syrup (already on the counter; no need to even ask). Lighter than they looked, and slightly tart from the buttermilk and lemon juice/zest, they really hit the spot. A side of crisp, juicy sausage (two patties) paired nicely. Burgers for breakfast? Say the words and they're yours. The Royale is an elevated Big Mac, with all the same ingredients, only sourced and executed dozens of times better. Notable differences beyond the obvious: buttered/griddled bun and superior juice flow despite the twin thin patties. Included crisp, well-salted, piping hot, skin-on fries were perfect. Though solid, the burger didn't wow like the fried chicken sandwich, which literally made me say "wow" more than a few times even though I was only sharing a portion of it. This behemoth is brined a day in advance to make the juiciness match the crunch. An interesting slaw, jalapeños, a few dashes of Tabasco sauce, and a densely sesame seeded bun all contributed to the masterful production that I'm calling the lead highlight from a visit filled with several. With the lines and reputation Palace Diner has, it would be easy to get away with hipster detachment or attitude, but service was first rate throughout. Quality coffee and water arrived instantly and got replenished throughout the meal before needing to ask. Conversation was friendly and natural. Extremely nice people and always ahead of the game. These are pros in action. With only around 15 counter stools and no tables, the quarters are cramped, so make the most of it by making new friends. You'll wind up comparing notes and sharing tips if not actual food, which is how I wound up trying some home fried potato that'll definitely get a second look next time. Hyped? The problem is though, it's impossible to hate Palace diner. The people that work here are the friendliest people in America. They deal with hungry, pre-coffee people all day, yet they are unbelievably welcoming and kind. The restaurant itself is just as loveable as the people, as the restored diner car is like a happy trip back in time (complete with decade-appropriate music). And I haven't even started talking about the food... Palace Diner has been written up nationally for its amazing breakfast and lunch fare. I've tried a lot of things on the menu and all of them have been worth the praise. I've eaten pancakes all over this country (and Canada) and I can say that Palace's flapjacks are the best I've ever had. Usually, the maple syrup is the best part of the pancake, but not here, where they don't even need syrup. I'm also a huge fan of the grilled banana bread, the grapefruit, and the tuna sandwich. My only complaint, the prices. If you are going to charge that much for breakfast, you should at least take credit cards. We saw this on yelp and it was definitely on our to eat list while in Saco/Beddiford Maine. When we drove up we realized they only accept cash so we left :(. While in Portland we asked a coffee shop Barista for their top things to do/food while in Maine and they named Palace diner. Another customer (of the coffee shop) piped up and said the pancakes are great and that they don't even like pancakes. So the Palace was back on our to eat list. We are so glad we revisited and overcame the obstacles. Obstacle one is that they don't accept cash. Obstacle two is that there is very little space. Which may cause you to want to take it to go. Well that leads us to obstacle number three. There is no ordering to go unless you order online. If you order online you will not be able to order the chicken sandwich or the pancakes which is exactly what we wanted. So long story short order in and have cash. It's worth it especially if you want the pancakes or fried chicken sandwich. If you want one of the items available through online ordering, go for it. Conclusion, the food was great! It was hot and delicious. Best pancakes and chicken sandwich we ever had. So it's worth the struggle to have a great meal :-D! And btw our waitress was very sweet. This isn't going to be the first review telling you how amazing the Palace Diner is and I'm sure it won't be the last. I'm fortunate enough to spend time each summer near Biddeford and I make it my mission to get to the Palace as much as possible. I'll be brutally honest, pre-Covid the fact that they only had a dozen seats made visits a little stressful. Wondering how long you'd have to wait to get it in was always a big unknown. Not that it's takeout only, all that stress has disappeared and I love it even more. Really user friendly online ordering platform. My favorite item is the fried chicken sandwich, I have to admit I've eaten it at 8am before as I've hit there later in the day on previous visits and they've sold out. So now it's my go to whatever the time of day. If that's not your bag, trying not to sound like I work for these guys, everything is great. The Reuben, banana bread, they even make an amazing tuna melt. AND, they make a great burger. Plus, the staff are always really pleasant! What I also love about Palace is that from Maine to Massachusetts i've met people who for whatever reason found themselves in Biddeford and visited Diner.
