Some of the best food I've ever had in my life. Went in expecting a cool old school diner car experience, ended up being even more impressed by how simple but fantastic the food is. Came once for breakfast and back again the next day for lunch. The pancakes, breakfast sandwich, potatoes, French toast, and burger were all solid 10/10s. Honorable mention to the Banana bread. The pancakes had a very subtle lemon flavor that was super unique. Big fan all around, husband and wife servers were also very nice and helpful. Over all great vibes and amazing food. Very limited seating here so you'll probably have to put your name in and wait but it's worth it. We were told about an hour wait both times but ended up getting in 10 minutes. This isn't going to be the first review telling you how amazing the Palace Diner is and I'm sure it won't be the last. I'm fortunate enough to spend time each summer near Biddeford and I make it my mission to get to the Palace as much as possible. I'll be brutally honest, pre-Covid the fact that they only had a dozen seats made visits a little stressful. Wondering how long you'd have to wait to get it in was always a big unknown. Not that it's takeout only, all that stress has disappeared and I love it even more. Really user friendly online ordering platform. My favorite item is the fried chicken sandwich, I have to admit I've eaten it at 8am before as I've hit there later in the day on previous visits and they've sold out. So now it's my go to whatever the time of day. If that's not your bag, trying not to sound like I work for these guys, everything is great. The Reuben, banana bread, they even make an amazing tuna melt. AND, they make a great burger. Plus, the staff are always really pleasant! What I also love about Palace is that from Maine to Massachusetts i've met people who for whatever reason found themselves in Biddeford and visited Diner. We saw this on yelp and it was definitely on our to eat list while in Saco/Beddiford Maine. When we drove up we realized they only accept cash so we left :(. While in Portland we asked a coffee shop Barista for their top things to do/food while in Maine and they named Palace diner. Another customer (of the coffee shop) piped up and said the pancakes are great and that they don't even like pancakes. So the Palace was back on our to eat list. We are so glad we revisited and overcame the obstacles. Obstacle one is that they don't accept cash. Obstacle two is that there is very little space. Which may cause you to want to take it to go. Well that leads us to obstacle number three. There is no ordering to go unless you order online. If you order online you will not be able to order the chicken sandwich or the pancakes which is exactly what we wanted. So long story short order in and have cash. It's worth it especially if you want the pancakes or fried chicken sandwich. If you want one of the items available through online ordering, go for it. Conclusion, the food was great! It was hot and delicious. Best pancakes and chicken sandwich we ever had. So it's worth the struggle to have a great meal :-D! And btw our waitress was very sweet. The top thing you need to know about Palace Diner is that it's small - if you're coming with a large group there is definitely going to be a wait, and you're probably better off ordering to go. there are maybe 10 stools or less available to sit on to eat. the width of the isle is about 12 inches. Move 1 more inch and you are slouching over the diner's breathing in their plates. It is hot in there and everyone wants to be a part of a nostalgic overpriced overrated experience that will most likely not happen. It will leave you either paying too much after waiting 2 hours to eat food you could have cooked better at home, or you leave frustrated having wasted time to get there and be told the wait is over 2 hours! Poor Biddeford is trying so hard to be something it is not at the moment at the cost of service. This place is a wanna be, a scam. Palace diner should expand or put a disclaimer on their website that they can only accommodate 10 customers at a time or else all the oxygen on the bus will disappear and you will all die of suffocation with your faces in a plate of overpriced overrated scrambled eggs and pancakes. read more

I feel torn about my experience at the Palace Diner. On one hand: Unlike others, the service couldn't have been more perfect. The extremely friendly folks running it were like a well oiled machine getting people in and out effortlessly and kindly (when a couple of women jumped the line and seated themselves, the staff very politely told them there was a wait-list - the way in which they did it was just so... loving? warm?... that the women apologized profusely and went back to waiting). Our coffee was always full and when we didn't receive our banana bread after a half dozen times of asking where it was they comped it. On the other hand: I didn't love the food. We came specifically for The Deluxe Sandwich (ask for Taylor Ham, apparently that's a thing) which everyone seems to be raving about, but I couldn't eat more than half because it was just.so.greasy and just.so.spicy. Every bite, my face and fingers were dripping with oil. And because there were so many jalapeños, even after scraping them off the bread, egg, and cheese were flavorless because they were so overwhelmingly spicy. The banana bread was just okay. But the Palace Potatoes were divine - slightly smashed and fried new potatoes that were melt in your mouth good. I wish they offered just a giant bowl of these topped with hollandaise. Other things to note: - Cash only. - Prices were really fair, especially if you're used to Portland breakfast prices. - There are legit only like 12 or 15 seats, so be prepared to wait (and don't worry too much about the people lingering behind you waiting while you eat - it's the circle of life here). - Finally, it's totally cool to drink a Coors Light with your stack of pancakes here. #loveit read more

I've heard about Palace Diner for several months, and have never had the opportunity to dine because of a ridiculously tight schedule that leaves me looking like the sad guy on an online dating commercial..... you know, where the dude misses every opportunity for a hot date because his iPhone decides to go into software update, and he can't do squat. EVERY time. Yeah, that's me and Palace Diner. But last week, fate intervened. A good friend simply arranged the perfect time to come in, and I had the pleasure of including my sister from Boston, and friend on a 3-day visit from Los Angeles. Thumbs up on all counts. They approved! First off...... get ANY dish with their "Palace Potatoes". I have no idea what they do to them, and believe me, with my calorie-counting mantra, I rarely touch the stuff. But on that day, my first date with this luscious bomb of a diner, I sampled (no... devoured) the forbidden fruit. They are simply amazing. I ordered the highly recommended Deluxe Sandwich. You'd think it was a simple dish of bacon, egg, jalapeno, and cheddar that you can find anywhere. But trust me when I tell you, they don't list their secret, magic ingredient..... .... awesome sauce! I have NO idea why this sandwich was so good, and I even had to seek the opinions of my sister and friend, both of whom bewilderingly confirmed the amazing-ness i held in my hands..... and i refused to give them extra bites. The fried chicken sandwich was incredible. We came here as a pit stop between Portland and driving up to bar harbor, yes we know it was out of the way but it was worth it. We got the fried chicken and the tuna melt and sat outside on a picnic bench next to the restaurant. I have nothing bad to say about the fried chicken - it was perfectly seasoned and had the right crunch and was paired with a delicious light slaw. The tuna melt was not quite as good as the other sandwich and a little bit messy but definitely tasty. If it wasn't a "takeout" order I think the melted cheese on the melt might have been a little bit better and the sandwich could use a bit less lettuce. We would definitely stop here again on our next visit to Maine and would likely try the egg sandwich. read more

I love this boxcar diner. The times I've been here was for breakfast and they have the most amazing pancakes. They put a lemon zest flavor. But this time around I tried my first Fried Chicken dinner which was excellent. Comes with some coleslaw and some cornbread. They also have the option of getting the blueberry pie. That is equally amazing as well. This chicken dinner is only served on a Friday evening and it's not a normal service but everybody comes here to eat just that. A must try. read more

My partner liked his order. My French Toast was really undercooked and gooey in the middle- probably from the egg wash. My partner had some too and we both got so sick later that day. Palace Diner is 85% the reason I wanted to move to Biddeford rather than any other town around the greater Portland area. Nothing on their menu is below sublime. From crispy, silky, and sweet French toast to their citrus pancakes there is always a new twist to an old classic. My boyfriend always gets the fried chicken sandwich and the dill in their slaw it the most lovely herbal compliment to the crispy chicken. This place is absolutely fantastic. You can tell the owners really care about what they do and it shows in the awesome food they're serving! It's located in an old dining car, which is classic New England--I've been to a lot of breakfast dining car places and they're typically greasy and a bit rude unless you're a local... not here! The guy serving us was great and so friendly/authentic. I had the lumberjack breakfast, my mother a cheeseburger (yes... for breakfast. She's awesome). I thought $14 was a bit steep for breakfast at first, but it was such good quality! They have their own spin on each breakfast entity... scrambled eggs are fluffy with cheddar cheese in the middle, potatoes are fried red potatoes smashed then with liberal kosher salt, ham was Taylor ham (yummmm), and their pancakes are "silver dollar style"--just how my Biddeford-born-and-raised grandma makes them! They add a touch of lemon which really fluffs them up. Oh, and on top of that there's always VT maple syrup on the counter for no extra charge--taking that into consideration with the pricing actually makes the meal pretty reasonable. I've paid $3+ for the real stuff elsewhere. Get here early to avoid long waits, as other reviewers noted the place is tiny and popular. They have a solid system in place and do move people through pretty quickly, so I noticed a lot of the quoted wait times for people ended up actually being shorter. Coming from the NY/NJ area, my husband and I were diner aficionados before we moved to Maine. When we stumbled upon Palace Diner, we could not have been more pleased; it's easily one of the best diners we have ever frequented. It's such a quaint and retro vibe (only about 15 seats, so be prepared for a wait) with friendly service and coffee while you wait. While it does not offer the chapter book size menu we are used to, it does not disappoint. Everything we have had from Palace has been utterly mouthwatering. We arrived on a Wednesday in mid-August for a late breakfast and were told the wait was about 40 minutes. After walking around most of Biddeford, we were finally seated at the counter. Imagine my disappointment when I was told they had just run out of the Corned Beef Hash. Didn't they know I was on vacation and no vacation is complete without Corned Beef Hash?!? Confused, agitated and hungry, I settled for the Deluxe Sandwich. I promptly forgot about Corned Beef Hash after the first bite. What a dirty, dirty sandwich! A sandwich-size English muffin, fluffy eggs, bacon, cheddar, jalapeno and mayo (and they're not shy on the mayo!) Smashed potatoes were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside. The Tuna Sandwich was also something. Stacked high with crispy lettuce, loaded with house made pickles and served on grilled toast, the sandwich is larger than appears in pictures and we wound up taking half of it home for a delightful after beach snack. Overall, an excellent breakfast. I'm going to have to come back to try the Corned Beef Hash. Maybe next year. read more

A show brought me to Biddeford for the first time. Palace Diner has been receiving rave reviews (including the Press Herald) and recently started dinner service from 5:30-9:00 on Friday and Saturday nights. I couldn't resist. So this review is for dinner only. None of my qualms apply to brunch and I'd love to venture back for that. Palace Diner is a true dining car. Off a side street on Main Street, this is no frills, bar seating only. There are 12-15 seats at the counter, and that's it. At 5:40 we were two of four customers. By 6:30 every seat was full. The dinner menu is comprised of a few apps, three entrees and one dessert. There are three beers, three glass of wine options and one cocktail. Prices are high. Like Old Port high. An appetizer of four fried balls of ham and jalapeño ($7) were tasty but unremarkable. The entree options were a chicken ($24), a clam dish ($17) and the burger and fries ($14). We opted to split the burger and fries, which amazingly (in a good way) comes medium rare by default. And a true medium rare it was, perhaps not for the faint of heart. I'd guess it was 1/3 of a pound, and it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. But $14 for a burger and fries in an old dining cart in Biddeford??? That's just madness to me and I would not go out of my way for dinner here. The dessert, which was essentially strawberry slices with cream and graham cracker sprinkles was light and fine. The gin fizz cocktail ($9) was decent, but paled in comparison to the excellent (and excellently strong) margarita at Bebe's Burrito, down the street, before. A peek at the brunch menu showed far more promise. Many more options at a fraction of the price. I could imagine this as a worthy trip for breakfast, but unless fate happens to take you to Biddeford, there are better dinner options. read more

Really cool spot! It's an old diner car that some young folks renovated and turned into a hipster spot. The food is to die for! It's tight because it's in an old diner car, so if you get there prime time on a Sunday definitely expect to wait. I've heard of some folks waiting for up to an hour or more. We got there right when they opened on a rainy Sunday so we were seated right away. The seating is cramped so if you don't like sitting on a bar stool right next to a stranger, you may have an issue. Next time I need to get their version of the lumber jack breakfast. I regretted not getting their pancakes. My meal was fine, good - basic breakfast but my husband got the jalapeno breakfast sandwich which is like eating nachos (the taste) but it's a breakfast sandwich. YUM. Wow! Everything about this place was great. I went with my father at 10:30am on a Sunday and had to wait an hour but it was well worth it. The place only has 15 seats! You get on the waiting list and they text you when your seats are available. We went across the street to the antique place for 30 min and came back. They gave us iced coffee and tea while we waited outside. The staff was above and beyond sweet. Our waitress had such a warm personality. Our food came out quick, and it was fantastic.
