Since I cannot watch movies without a siopao or two to munch on, I'm glad there's a Kowloon House near where I used to live. It's in a strip mall fronting Brazil street, which makes it not too far from SM Bicutan. Whether asado or bola-bola, Kowloon has been able to maintain its terrific taste over the decades. This place is open until late into the evening, so whenever the urge hits, I can be sure that I can get my favourite jumbo siopao practically anytime. Kowloon claims to have the "world's best dimsum" and it's not an idle boast. How else could it have survived for the longest time? However, the outlet along Dona Soledad Avenue says it's open 24 hours a day, but there have been several occasions when I passed by and it was closed for business. The place is more kiosk than restaurant, by the way. There are only a handful of tables and chairs, but that's ok. Most customers order take out anyway. There's been only one out of so many times when I wasn't totally satisfied with my Kowloon siopao. The taste seemed funny, close to spoiling. I chalk up that one bad experience to their possibly recycling unsold siopao. Or maybe it was just one bad batch out of thousands sold every month. That's when I learned of King Bee. Masinag seems to be the nearest to our place... even if it's really far away from us. For Sunday lunches with our clan, we go all the way to Masinag to pick up lunch. That's exactly what we did today. Our usuals are their Yang Chow Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Pork, Chopseuy Fried Noodles, Hakaw, Asado Siopao, and of course, Jumbo Siopao. These dishes from them never fail us. Their hakaw has the most shrimp I've ever seen inside a hakaw. The Jumbo Siopao is a mix of bola bola with egg, chorizo, shrimp, and mushroom. I've tried something similar from other places... and King Bee's is still the best.

But going to an expensive, quality Chinese restaurant is also not always an option; save them for special occasions. For your ordinary day craving for Chinese foodd an affordable but quality alternative is Mongkok. They offer a good variety of delicious, filling dishes for all courses: appetizers, soups, dimsum, noodles, fried rice and rice toppings, main dishes, and dessert. While the prices of their dishes are not dirt cheap, they are certainly reasonable.

Hap Chan in Silver City took the place of Cafe Mondial, a bar I would frequent in my early 20s. I have a lot of memories and non-memories (aka I was drunk and technically don't remember what happened but I was there) from the place, and now it's Hap Chan. That's always a bittersweet thing. I don't blame Hap Chan, though, and am happy I get to have a decent meal at this place with some history of my wasted youth. They got rid of Mondial's terrible bathroom at least; there are tables and seats now where that used to be hehehe enjoy your meal :)
