And travel sometimes to Memphis for business and have worked for two KC based firms - so have eaten a lot of great BBQ. And of course the best of the low country and upstate SC, from Scott's to Lewis (which are awesome). The pulled pork, beef cheeks and brisket are of course awesome. I'm mainly writing another review for these guys because in addition to the above I got an empanada (which I like to do here as it's great food for the truck ride home without making a mess) - and it's probably the best empanada I've ever had. Easily has taken the crown as best bbq in Charleston. I used to place Lewis there, but Palmira'a beef cheek and barbacoa are unreal. The sides are killer too. Longer lines for one service counter, but two rooms of seating, both high tops and low tops. I enjoy having to-go containers already out for easy use. A must visit. read more

What can I say about Palmira barbecue that everyone else is not already said? I will bury the lead and say it was excellent. Upon arriving, there is a sizable lot to park in. Once you walk in, there is a menu on the wall as well as specials posted on the glass. My husband ordered ribs, mustard, slaw, beans, and a few tostadas. I had a brisket bowl that was a special. Both of us thought our meals were exceptional. I especially loved the beans. I could eat those of a rice every single day. Our friends ordered some mac & cheese that was delicious. There is indoor seating, outdoor seating under a porch, and then outdoor seating underneath some umbrellas. The six of us sat under the umbrellas and it was quite peaceful with no bugs. I was so excited to try Palmira Barbecue when I was planning my trip to Charleston. I knew that I had to go here no matter what and it was absolutely worth it. There was a line when I went but it was moving rather quickly. Love the decoration and the vibe of the restaurant. I got the beef cheeks, barbacoa, beef rib, and the sausage and I must say the barbacoa was my favorite. If you are into the super soft and tender BBQ meat then Barbacoa and the beef cheeks are the way to go. The beef rib was a little bit tougher than I thought. I still liked it but would prefer if it were "falling off the bone" tender. Some people may prefer this texture though. Everyone was seasoned perfectly, I didn't really need the BBQ sauce. Got a few sides as well and my favorites were the collard greens and the Puerto Rican beans. The coleslaw was surprisingly refreshing. This BBQ joint was definitely worth the visit! Yes, Palmira is expensive and aiming for quality. We get it. Really enjoyed all the unique BBQ flavors. Specifically, the barbacoa and cilantro went well together. Staff was busy, friendly, and kept the lunch rush moving. Our main (constructive) feedback would be to 1) add weights and/or amounts to the (big board) pricing menu and 2) present customers with a heads up on the "fixins" that cost extra (e.g., cilantro and fried shell). Palmira BBQ is definitely a must try here in Charleston. Their southern BBQ with a twist of puerto rican culture hit in every different way possible. Known for their beef cheeks I had to order a LB and it didn't disappoint. The seasoning to the tenderness was done right and that was the highlight of this place. I also really enjoyed the caramel bread pudding they had for the special of the day. Sausage and Mac n cheese were also great compliments. I wasn't a fan of the collard greens. In town with friends for the weekend and had been seeing this place pop up for awhile so we decided to go for a late lunch. The line was not super long when we got there just right at the door but they really do have a smooth running operation. The inside is pretty nicely decorated and kinda feels like a dining hall vibe. They pull the meat or and slice,cut, or chop it right it front of you which makes it hard to pick because everything honestly looks so good. It was 4 of us and we ended up getting a mix of everything between us all. I personally got the Brisket, barbacoa and Sausage. I'll say everything here is cooked well very well in fact. I just think I expected a little more flavor on the Brisket, my friend got the beef ribs while both good just felt a tad lacking on flavor. Came here for lunch during the week. There were a good amount of people there but no issue finding a table. The menu is posted on the wall and you order at the counter, like Texas style barbecue. All of the sides sounded great. My dad got the beef cheek and said it was great. The rest of our table got the special barbacoa bowl and would love to order that again. It was a lot of food and I brought the rest home for lunch the next day. We found a seat in the back that could fit all of our trays of food and dove in to our meals. Everyone was happy and the food was tasty. It is a bit more expensive then other local BBQ joints, but that didn't deter me from trying almost everything. Disappointed at my first visit here. The BARBACOA is a heart attack waiting to happen. Their version is way too greasy to be edible. The PERNIL PULLED PORK has a bright citrusy vibe, but is under seasoned. I suggest you douse it in your choice of barbecue sauce. Moving on to sides, the COLLARD GREENS are tender with a kick of spicy but way too sweet. POTATO SALAD is mustard and mayo based but too bland to be served at any respectable barbecue establishment. Puerto Rican style BBQ. They are known for their beef cheeks so I had to order it. There is insane bark and smoke ring on these cheeks. The meat is so tender, it literally dissipates in your mouth. I also ordered the pork ribs, which is my absolute favorite type of BBQ meat. The shiny lacquer on these ribs is art. It falls off the bone too. It's marinated lightly so you can enjoy the BBQ sauce, with is sweet and mustardy. Finally got to get out to Charleston to try this place. I've been wanting to come here for quite some time. This is Texas bbq with Puerto Rican flavor. We got the Don Louis pulled pork sandwiches, a sausage, large mac, small beans, and a bread pudding (made with plantains). Everything on this plate was outstanding. I love bbq, but it can be a day ruiner if you have anything else planned so I really need to pick and choose when I'm indulging. One saturday we were craving beef rib and were thinking of heading to Lewis for the Saturday special. Then I remembered that I've been wanting to try Palmira so we detoured there instead. It's a similar ordering style where you go through the line and pick out your meats and then your sides. We lucked out, considering it was a Saturday. with almost nobody ahead of us. We came between lunch and dinner which seems to be the key because it was packed by the time we left. We filled up a tray and I think paid about $120 which is expected for what we got. There is a bunch of tables in the main room, a back room with more, and then tables outside on a covered patio if the weather is right. After enjoying everything and taking home plenty of leftovers, here are my thoughts on everything we ate... or would like to eat in the future. I'll always order: -Beef Cheek - this was a life changing item... I would eat a whole tray of beef cheek. -Beef Rib - beef rib is so flavorful and tender. It's pricey but it's so damn good. -Puerto Rican Beans - I'm still talking about these, what a sleeper item. Some of the best beans ever. -Pickles - I love that they weren't sweet pickles... so good and nice crunch (plus they're free). Good, but depends on the day: -Barbacoa tostadas - these were good, but for beef I'm choosing the cheek and the rib. -Pernil pork - this was a special and quickly ran out and got switched to pulled pork. It was very tasty so if you want a meat to add I would definitely try it. -Mac and cheese - I think this was hyped in my head because of everyone saying it was so good. I thought it was just okay. -Mustard slaw - I don't eat slaw usually, but my friend wanted it. I will say it was better than most slaws. -Arroz Con Grandules - delicious, and especially with the beans mixed in. But if the hash and rice was on the menu, I would want to try that. I can't wait to try next time: -Hash and rice - this wasn't on the menu when I went, but I'm dying to try it. -Pork rib - I don't think it will hold a candle to the beef rib, but I would give it a go. -House sausage - This looked like it was stuffed with cheese and peppers. I was regretting not ordering it, but we had already added so much for the two of us. I must try next time. Other meats - looking at the menu, I see they also rotate in brisket, pork chops, and Chuleta Kan Kan. I would be down to try any of them, but the Chuleta Kan Kan looks amazing! Palmira BBQ is a must stop when you are in the area. Big fan of the build your own platter concept. Meats are priced by the half pound and pound and you can add in a la carte sides. For two people, we went with a half pound of pernil (Latin American pulled pork) and beef cheeks as well as a sausage. For sides we had collards, Puerto Rican beans, and pastelon (special). The pernil and collard greens were my favorite, but everything was so flavorful and I enjoyed sampling multiple things. From what I've seen on social, this place is poppin and can have a long line. Fun new BBQ restaurant in the West Ashley area! Their meat is very unique, as they have beef cheeks and Pernil (think vinegar bbq pork), and loads of delicious sides. The line can get out the door, but it does go pretty fast and you literally leave the line with your food. You can see them cut the meat and you often get a peek at the folks in front of you ordering if you are curious. You order everything by the half pound and they switch around their menu a lot, which is fun. We ordered 2 barbacoa tacos, one beef cheek, and 1/2 pound of Pernil for our meat, and small collards and small Mac and cheese for sides. This was plenty for just the two of us but we did finish everything! The barbacoa tacos were excellent- the meat was full of flavor and the crispy shell underneath was a great touch. The Pernil was so good and didn't even need any bbq sauce. The beef cheek was okay, but we weren't blown away by it. We heard this place was known for their beef cheeks so we were stoked to try them. They weren't bad, but also nothing to write home about. We really enjoyed the collards, and the Mac and cheese honestly looked better than it tasted. Not bad, but probably won't order again. The home runs for us were the barbacoa, Pernil, and collards. They also had some desserts that looked good, but we didn't partake. It was a little sweet but also had a nice vinegar bite to it. The pork ribs were good too, but overshadowed by the everything else! The collards were sweet spicy and had vinegar. They were pretty solid but could have been cooked a teensy bit more to make the core/stems more tender. But they still had a really good flavor! I didn't try the Mac but Mom said it was very good and extra cheesy. They were out for the hash & rice but when I go back it's on the list to try! The joint itself is no frills but they had nice letters framed on all the walls from customers over the years and probably back from Puerto Rico too as it is an old family tradition here at Palirma.
