Just a year after my first review, and I've come to love Paloma all the more. A fun point I missed in my original review is: Paloma has been around forever... Well, at least my whole lifetime(+), and that's a while at this point ;). My relationship with Paloma, has changed from a shop where I looked at pretty things, as a little girl with my grandmother - to a staple. Paloma is my go-to place when I am seeking something special and unique for the loved ones in my life. Paloma never lets me down with their expansive collections of accessories, bags, locally made jewelry, and high quality US made clothing lines, such as: Cut Loose and Tianello. Being rather petite, the clothing at Paloma is not always available in my size. However, the pieces I have bought for myself, are some of my favorites. On the other hand, the jewelry is where I really go a bit overboard for myself. I can't resist the exceptional selection of handmade rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. At first glance you may think Paloma to be a stuffy boutique, but the shop gals are ever so helpful, and friendly. I had worried bringing my kids into the shop would be frowned upon. This is not the case. I've discovered I am welcome to bring the kids in with me. Paloma even has a basket full of toys to keep the little ones busy. In my case, this means I make it into the shop much more frequently than I did before. One last thing: Paloma is an active supporter of community it serves. This is a gem of a find!! I can't believe I've only just found out about this women-owned and run, clothing store (since 1978!). The women who run the shop are fantastic. I brought my two year old, and when he got cranky, they pulled out a toy basket!! So awesome! After shopping there the first time, I received a handwritten postcard (art by one of the co-owners!) in the mail!! So cool! The clothes are beautiful and organized by color mostly. The clothes are made of wonderful material and mostly made In the US. I wear a 12-14, and it seems that size is a little harder to find ... so that's my one grump. :) This is my new favorite clothing store! read more

The vibe in this place was a little off. It's hard to put into words exactly, but I didn't feel very welcome here. As I entered, I was immediately walked right up to and asked very intensely if I was looking for anything. I don't know...maybe I just favor a more laid back approach, where someone smiles and says hi when you walk in. This felt very aggressive. The clothing isn't my style. That being said, it did seem like my mom and aunt would like the store, and I was glad I was able to find a Christmas gift for my aunt here. I used a Chinook Book coupon for 20% off and they gift-wrapped the gloves for free. The women who helped me at the register was nice, but the two other women working right next to her spent time complaining about a customer's perfume. Makes you wonder what they'll say about you when you leave. I did spot some free coffee on the way out, which is a nice touch. read more

I'm on a personal mission lately to patronize more businesses in my own neighborhood (Hillsdale), so last weekend I moseyed around the village center and checked out some locally-owned places, both new and familiar. Part of the tour was Paloma Clothing, where I was warmly welcomed in from the crappy (hello, June?!) weather that day. The clerks were friendly without being pushy and knew their stock well. They even pointed out the free coffee they were offering by the front door. Nice touch. I perused many racks of clothes and accessories, and found that everything was high quality, likely handmade, and made with mostly natural materials. I have yet to purchase anything here yet, but I will definitely be back! read more

I visited here with my mother while visiting for Christmas and New Year's Eve and had a great experience. My mother has raved about the small shop since she moved to Portland three years ago and I was happy to finally see what all the fuss was about. The shop stocks a good range of clothing and accessories, and despite having the polar opposite of taste from my mother we were both able to walk away with some covetable new additions to our closet. The thing that impressed me the most however was the customer service - all the sales associates were not only helpful without being overbearing, but they also knew my mother by name and more than a fair amount about her life. Now I am sure this partially is owed to the fact that my mom is there more than her fair share, but I am equally sure it is because the store seems to be staffed by a wonderful group of women who genuinely seem interested in their customers. I'm impressed, and the fuss on my mother's part is definitely deserved. I will be back when I am in Portland again! read more

Great local clothing shop that has been serving Portland for many years now. I have been able to find some really great things for my wife here. Nice sweaters, skirts and even a really cute dress she looks awesome in. They have some nice jewerly and accessories too, a lot of which is local. I will admit that this skews a little older than where she would normally shop, but each time we have gone we have found some great things she loves. And the quality and prices are pretty darn good. They often have sales and the staff is incredibly friendly, especially to a husband looking for some good ideas. read more

This is such a great little hole in the wall boutique. I can come in here with my mother or grandmother and usually we can both find something we like and would wear. They have a very diverse stock with good quality clothing at a reasonable price. Their sale merchandise is always worth the trip if nothing else. I have found a few great pairs of jeans for a quarter their retail. The sales people are always welcoming and helpful. They know their stock and can point you to whatever you're looking for or make some good general suggestions. Overall, this is a great place to shop for young and old and all will be happy. One of my clients, who has since become a good friend, introduced me to this boutique after one of our first meetings, and I've been back many times since then, both alone and with friends. There's great diversity in their selection; I can bring friends in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, and my mom, and we all go into the dressing rooms with stacks of things to try. I can always find gifts here, especially for my friends in their 40s and 50s. I have purchased a couple of signature pieces of clothing that I look forward to wearing, and I've picked up several staple pieces of jewelry that are unusual enough to create interest but simple and classic enough to go with everything. Being in my late 20s, I don't always find things for myself here, but I always enjoy the shopping experience regardless. Also, the jewelry selection here is second to none; they have items for virtually every taste and price point. The girls who do the ordering for the jewelry are exceptionally helpful as well. If there's a piece that you're interested in, they can always tell you all about it -- where it came from, who designed it, what it's made of, etc. -- and if you need to order something (because it's out of stock, or because you want a different metallic finish), they're incredibly diligent about following up with the designer and letting you know what they find out. read more

Wow! I have passed this shop so many times and never ventured in. I suppose the scarves and other items on display outside looked aimed at an older crowd (I'm in my early thirties, myself), but I stopped in this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised! Everything was well-curated, well-crafted, and in lovely 'Portland' styles and colors that you just can't find in big box stores. Prices were not low, but I wouldn't expect them to be for this quality. I've been on the hunt for a Christmas gift for my mother in law and sister, and I found the *perfect* jewelry and accessories for them here. I appreciate that the jewelry is locally made; I feel good supporting local artisans, and I know my gift will be truly unique. I stopped by during a 20% off holiday sale, so the shop was very busy, but I was helped in a timely manner. The service seemed very old school -- I overheard an employee gently remind a shopper that her daughter usually visits during the holidays in search of a gift for her mother, and ask if she'd like to steer her daughter toward anything in particular. They've got some really lovely stuff here if you're prepared to spend the money. Geared a little more for the middle-aged set, they still offer a lot for us younger people-- think separates, not whole outfits. Good supply of locally-made handbags, and things like scarves, belts and accessories. With so many sweet dress and jewelry shops near my house in NE, Paloma clothing is totally worth the drive to Hillsdale. The staff in incredibly friendly, helpful, and smart about what they carry and what you might like if you're not exactly sure. Their sales are incredible. Get there early, and have your ,"oh, sorry, excuse me," cued up for repeat, because these sales are popular and the place can get crowded. I love their dresses, skirts, purses, jewelry and scarves, and get tons of compliments on everything I buy. The prices can be a bit high at times, but the sale and clearance racks are always being updated. This is one local business that lets you know how grateful they are for your support. A few days following every single one of my visits, I receive a pre-printed thank you card in the mail with a handwritten inscription. When I went to today's sale, one of the owners was there, greeting people, pointing them to the plate of cookies and coffee, and thanking everyone profusely for stopping by. I love this store, and the Hillsdale shopping center makes it even more worth the trip, with nearby Baker & Spice and Food Front co-op. read more

I might not like every style in this store, but no style in this store is even remotely anything my grandmother would have worn. Stylish without being runway crazy, colorful without being garish, flattering to every body type, although I wish they carried a few more extra larges because some of the makes run small. Paloma is a gem! I rarely feel strongly enough about a place to take the time to share my thoughts in a review, but have to for this store. I've shopped there many times over the years, but it's recently solidified in my mind what a special place this is, and how important it is to shop locally. The owners are highly engaged in giving back to the community, which I place great value on. It is my understanding they treat their employees well, and it shows. They are an attentive, friendly bunch and it's a joy to shop there. While I'm not a big shopper and tend towards ordering online, I'm reminded that it's more satisfying and efficient to go into a boutique like this, be able to try on a slew of clothing, with the help of a professional (it's not a skill set for me!). Today, Laura was absolutely perfect to help this middle-aged body get just the right pieces to help me feel my best. I walked out of there feeling I could never have found these coordinating pieces online, and vastly appreciated the knowledgeable, honest perspective Laura offered. She made the process fun and helped me feel good about myself, and that's worth a lot to me. I am deaf, making shopping in stores all the more challenging, but we had no problem communicating effectively. Laura was the perfect sales person for me! Thank you again, Laura!!! When ordering online, you cannot feel the fabric (Paloma's fabrics are consistently top quality and last), nor know how it will fit. When I consider the costs and time I've wasted on shipping fees and returns, it's not often a bargain and, is a hassle. Furthermore, I'm not helping support the livelihoods of people in my locale. Yes some of the clothing are geared for the "middle age" and maybe at 40 (however I consider myself pretty hip and fashion forward) I am getting close to this but I think that anyone could find great seperates, dresses, or accessories including fabulous scarfs, jewelry, and bags/purses. Husbands, Boyfriends, Significant Others out their my Husband loves this place b/c he can go in and the sales associates are helpful at helping him decide and wrap it up nicely.
