I had seen this place online while trying scope out some eateries when in Tennessee for the weekend. I keep trying to go places we don't have in Ohio. I was driving towards the campground at like 9:00pm and suddenly, the VERY distinctive Pal's building is right there! So I hit the brakes and pull in. There appears to be no dine-in at all. And the drive-thru is weird. You stop at the first window and tell another human, face to face, your order. The menu is small-ish. I got a sauceburger, small frenchie fries, and a small chocolate shake. I asked if the fries are really crispy or not, as I would have asked for them well done. He seemed confused, looked over for moral support(?) and then said, "yeah, our fries are really crispy." *everyone will remember that* I tried to pay the guy and he takes my card and then goes, oh no, you have to pay when you pull around. So, I roll around to the other side of the building, where I could now see the guys back who took my order, and pay this new guy. Who then gives me my food. It was indeed, pretty sudden service. That's the tag line. The fries were not crispy. They were still really good, and insanely hot. They had some kind of seasoning on them that tasted like old bay mixed with garlic cheese or something. They were good. The burger was ok. It wasn't bad, so it doesn't lose anything there. The sauce tasted like maybe ketchup mixed with a-1 steak sauce? And the milkshake was super thick. I would probably wait to drink that like 20 minutes after your meal. All in all, while I would go back, I would not make it a point to revisit until I try other restaurants in the area. read more

Sudden service here is no joke. After placing our order we drove around and made payment. Within seconds of getting our card back they began hangmding us our food. Super friendly and fast service. The food here is delicious. The burger reminds me of whataburger. The shake was very reminiscent of In N Out. The chili dog was an all beef dog with chili very similar to skyline chili. The fries were the closest to McDonald's I have ever tasted. It's like someone combined the best of several burger chains and made it there own. A triumph!!!! read more

Pal's is not only an institution in the eastern Tennessee area (specifically the area that is known as the Tri-Cities region where Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City all are), but has garnered attention on a national level from a few unlikely sources. Food & Wine magazine wrote a review of it and the restaurant even won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award one year, which typically is awarded to hospitals, educational facilities, luxury hotels, etc. Pal's marked the first time this prestigious award was granted to a fast food restaurant chain. So what makes it so special? I asked myself that when I pulled into this location and found a line into the street. Well, one way to find out. When my turn arrived at the drive-up window, I ordered the cheeseburger and a chili hot dog. The small cheeseburger was called a sauce burger w ou th cheese and I guess the sauce was their ketchup based sauce which tasted pretty much like ketchup. The cheeseburger was ok. Basically a fast food cheeseburger and the hot dog, which did not look appetizing, was actually pretty good. Service was good and the building does draw attention. I would say a big part of the popularity is nostalgia, Pal's has been around a long time and people remember going here as a kid with their parents or grandparents. Nostalgia is an important thing and that is not a bad thing. I would return and I recommend that you check it out. read more

What an adorable establishment!! My daughter having relocated found Pals and was excited to have a new hamburger location to enjoy. While visiting her for holidays, we had to try it! The hamburger was mediocre; toppings were mediocre; and the buns were expected. The Frenchie Fries were seasoned and crispy! I enjoyed them!! We didn't try a shake yet they were available. Soft drinks as expected. I'm giving them a 3/5 because it wasn't anything special once past their unique building! Ordering and pick up were easy and polite! Food was turning cold upon arrival home approximately 15 minutes away! This establishment is adorable. It's as expected of a McDonalds, or BK. I enjoyed it and my daughter loves it's here for her to bop in and out for a hamburger and nothing exciting yet good. Try Pals!! It was a nice change and I did enjoy it!! read more

They managed to keep operations running and kept both employees and customers safe. I honestly don't get it. Their burgers are precooked/reheated and taste bland. It's easy to conspire out to dog food - but not as tasty. I would rather have a Quarter Pounder, and I rarely eat those. I was in Johnson City for a week for work and it seemed that anyone I asked where to eat would mention Pal's, so I came here with a lot of hype. There was a line getting into the drive thru but that can be common during lunch, I should note that the line moved very fast compared to other fast food places. I pulled up to order and was met by a person, and not in the Chick-Fil-A situation when they send someone outside with a tablet at times, this person was the order taker. The food was not bad, I could actually taste tea in the sweet tea which is a nice change but it was still fast food. The experience is great, they do customer service right, however at the end of the day I cannot say that in a blind taste test I could tell the difference between their burger and that of any other fast food chain. read more

Pal's has been a favorite of my wife's since she was growing up in East Tenn; now it is the first stop we make pulling into town. There is something so wooing about those large white styrofoam cups and their green-brown straws. Fries and burgers are well done, burgers a little too well done. The chocolate milkshake is the best I have had anywhere in the world, but the polite and sudden service is top echelon at this brick-and-mortar. I give this 4 stars because it is possible to find a better burger or fries at another boutique, but not a better shake. We went through the drive-thru twice and the employees were beyond friendly. They were super helpful with helping us order. Also, they were quite educated on the menu and where the other locations are. They were also very positive and they showed that they truly enjoy where they work. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the food wasn't totally amazing, but it was good. The hotdogs were really good, our fries were a bit cold, and the hamburgers were decent. One of my absolute favorite drive-through restaurants. Pal's fresh cooked, quick delivery system is amazing. Their 'Sudden Service' is a key component of their identity, along with their quirky building design. I've had everything on the menu, minus the hot dog, and have always been happy with my order. Not living in the area anymore, Pal's is an absolute must for every visit. My go-to order is a Sweet Tea, Frenchie Fry and the Big Chicken sandwich. The tea is perfectly sweetened according to the standard of the area, the fries (coated w seasoned salt) are generous and the thin-cut, deli-sliced chicken sandwich is also a generous portion. I have never had what I would consider even a hint of indifference from any of their employees, and rudeness doesn't even enter the conversation where Pal's is concerned. Their Peachie Tea is one of my favorite treats. This location may seem a little out of place, but they have a constant stream of customers for a good reason. Hello first of all I must say I love Pal's I'm not one to eat fast food very often if any at all and when I do go to Pal's I will sit in a line of at least 15 cars or more sometimes (and I do not mind because you guys are very fast) just for the water because it is So Good well for the first time today I went to your location on the Bristol Highway and of course ordered water Well I must say it tasted like lake water and I will probably not be back to this location for the water sorry I know it's just water but I drink a lot of it and I can tell the difference in the taste other than that some of the best fast food in the US...Hands-Down! read more
