While the food here was great and wonderful, and the atmosphere a lot busier than from what I've seen in Winston-Salem (this one does about the same traffic as the one in an airport I've been to) I had to deduct a star. Why? The bathroom. I had to go, and let's just say that... it wasn't as rough shape as a bathroom in a gas station, but you shouldn't expect it to be compared to a gas station. Believe the hype! American food at its simplest and best. Good bigass burgers, REAL house cut French Fries, any toppings you want, condiments and all that. Nothing fancy here. I don't usually like to eat here unless it's on the patio. It's really loud inside. Yes, you CAN share a medium order of fries with the whole office. But why do that? Just get this grocery sack full of fried taters and something good to dip them in (I mix mayo and ketchup), add a ton of salt, and indulge. Does anyone use the word catsup? If so, they shouldn't. Burgers here are really good, almost as good as burgers you make yourself on the grill at home (well, depending on whether or not you can make some mean burgers haha). The really nice part is that all the toppings are included in the price. Well done and yet still juicy. If I were to make my own, I'd do prefer medium rare, but it's good enough here that I don't really care. Milkshake are all super good, but you really can't mess up a milkshake. Okay, now their fries. They use potatoes from many different sources, and they always write it on their board what the current batch are from. That doesn't matter to me but I'm sure it's cool to some to know. Regardless, I don't care for their fries at all. To me they taste like potato wedges, and have no crisp to them. And it's not like I've only tried it a couple times... I've tried it dozens of times and it's always been like that. Now why would I keep ordering them if I don't like them? Cause to me it feels natural to order fries with a burger... second nature I guess. Tons of people do love them so it's not them, it's me. Oh and they have free peanuts. I love a good burger! My wife suggested we go to Five Guys and, to me, that sounded like a first class idea given that I have recently had a bad run with the ubiquitous Maccas. The shop is neat and clean. The music playing throughout the store was good, but far too loud to allow pleasant conversation. The girl behind the counter was pleasant and we placed an order for two burgers, two cold drinks and one small serve of fries between us, and no other extras. My expectations grew. Any place that charges $22 for the above must be good, right? Well, first impressions were positive. After unwrapping the food (even though we opted to eat in) the burgers looked the goods. The fries looked a little second-hand, but, as it turns out they were the best part of the meal. The burgers, I reiterate, looked wonderful. Sadly, they were a bit tasteless and left us thinking of Rudd...er, Fuddruckers. It's difficult to know why the burgers were ordinary. Everything seemed good, although the beef was distinctly tasteless. There was plenty to eat but it just didn't hit the spot. There's nothing more disappointing than salivating over the expectation of truly good food, only to then discover the reality is considerably less. Well after overpaying for the hamburger, they put mushrooms on a burger that had onions only on it. When I requested it fixed, acted like it was my fault even when my receipt is showing onions. I have been to original Five Guys in Virginia before the huge expansion of this category of burger joint known as fast casual. I long for the original as this location feels more corporate but very clean and the kitchen has plenty of room to do a volume business cooked to order. Fast casual goes to the more cooked to order and less assembly line then fast food. Therefore the food quality is better but you pay a little more and typically wait a little longer. First thing you notice is the huge bags of fries and peanuts -- you can eat as many as you want for free which is a nice touch as I love peanuts. There is indoor and outdoor seating .. the outdoor seating is much preferred!!! They made the outdoor area very inviting and enjoyable place to eat. They have a call system - so you are called when your order is ready - this is good since they cook to order. I ordered what you would expect .. one each of the burger, hot dog and some fries. Everything was fresh made and tasted such. The fries come in a huge bag and you get lots - so for me I did not need the large and had plenty. The dog was split in half so that it cooked nicely and gave a good flavor. Burger had all fresh accompaniments and an okay bun. The burger is certainly way above fast food quality which I would expect. All in all this is a good place to eat. I have had better fast casual but I think most people would not be disappointed - just expect to pay a little more so have some extra peanuts.. lol Also at peak times when it is not nice out it will be pretty crowded and loud inside. read more

You can choose between a normal-sized burger (two patties) or a smaller version (just one patty), cheese or no cheese, and besides that, as many toppings as you want, and they're free! The local Five Guys is pretty big and can handle a large crowd. I was there on a very busy day but the staff worked quickly and well together, and my food was ready to go. It's definitely higher quality than your average fast food joint, so if you're craving a fresh, delicious burger for a reasonable price, you can't go wrong at Five Guys. read more

Every other Five Guys I go into the people behind the counter and the cooks are usually super friendly, will say hi to you and are generally excited to see you. We went to this store today on Roan Street in Johnson City, Tn. The atmosphere was not too good. The staff were not very friendly and seemed bored for being there. We ordered two burgers, fries, a drink and a milkshake. The cashier charged us for two drinks and a milkshake. So the girl that was working the cash register and when I asked for a refund for the drink that I didn't ask for she said oh so you want a refund for this drink in a hateful and mean way. So with that being said she asked another girl to give me the refund. She wanted to act like it was my fault that she gave me a drink that I had not asked for and not hers because she had to give a refund. As far as the food goes it is way over priced and fries were way to salty. The burgers are greasy and don't taste like a great burger. So $30.00 worth of food that wasn't worth $10.00 and next time I will go to Burger King and believe me if I do ever and that is a big if I ever eat at another Five guys it will not be at the one on Roan Street in Johnson City, Tn. Five Guys is so good! The fries are awesome. I don't eat burgers, but my parents and my brother love them. If you are a vegetarian, you can just get the grilled cheese sandwich and you can put a variety of topping on it (or in it?) for both the burger and the grilled cheese. The service is pretty fast and the price is great. The only thing wrong is that, at least in the JC location, the seating area is pretty cramped, but you can carryout if it's too much. :) read more
