I stopped by today based on a new food app I had downloaded. I was blown away by the variety of pastries (sweet and savory), and the baker was so helpful and informative describing what they were. He also explained the history of this bakery and how it's been around for 40 years. I'm so thankful I stopped by! We got to try their freshly baked baguette, guava pastry, apple pastry, beef empanadas, and chicken empanadas. Everything was so good! I was in the area and was craving a Cuban beef pastelito. I ordered one as well as a guava and cheese one for my hubby. What a complete disappointment from the dingy store to the day old dried out pastelito. I'm sure this store has changed hands at some point. I would at least attempt cleaning the store windows. Quite frankly, it's a lost cause. It's like someone said, I'll buy this existing business and run it to then ground. It's a real shame. I definitely won't be back. read more

We spotted this unassuming little place a couple of weeks ago and remembered it today. So glad we did. You walk in and some of the food is displayed to your left. Guava and Cheese pastries, chicken empanadas and beef empanadas. They also have a cheese bread. We just wanted a Cuban sandwich. We asked if they had them and were told yes. There is limited English spoken(a good sign) and we managed just fine. Pan American Bakery has seating for about 8 people. We saw that it was largely a togo place. Our sandwich was ready and it was huge and a beauty. It was perfectly toasted and the amount of meat and cheese on it is unheard of in these days. The cheese oozed out and it was tasty. There are so many Cuban sandwiches around that the bread comes out soggy and has the same ingredients. I can't figure that one out. Just know I can't stand wet, soggy bread. Pan American Bakery is a tidy little place with very friendly staff(I think the owners). Can't wait to return. But will definitely bring more cash next time. I wanted to try a bit of everything I saw but that will have to wait until I arrive with cash. Highly recommend. But please be patient if there is a line. Remember it is basically a Mom and Pop establishment. Price are very reasonable $9 for a huge Cuban sandwich and the Empanadas both sweet and savory are only $1.50. PS. Be aware this place is cash only. The food here is good. If you get a chance to then try the empanadas they have in the glass shelves at the counter. I tried the empanadas, Cuban sandwich, and coffee with milk. The service is very quick. Try to order in Spanish if you can. This is a very small business and to go type of place. I've been on a Cuban kick recently and found Pan American Bakery on Yelp. We stopped in for a late lunch/snack and found Pan American Bakery to satisfy every craving. Pan American Bakery seems to be under-appreciated and forgotten but I loved it! It's a tiny family owned shop with what looks like has regular customers. FYI: cash only. We got here late afternoon but it was still pretty busy. We ordered with our eyes and over-ordered. There's not a formal menu - it's whatever you see on display, as well as Cuban sandwiches or coffee. We ordered guava and cheese pastels (filled pastries), a Cuban sandwich to share, as well as a meat patty and a cafe con leche. Everything was fresh and tasty. The Cuban was not as fancy as the other ones I've tried in Atlanta, but tasted homey and hit the spot. Nothing to really complain about here. The food and pastries at Pan American Bakery are absolutely delicious! The service from the older gentleman, who I believe to be the owner, was amazing. He was very kind. We started off with a Cuban sandwich - Pork, Ham, Cheese, Mustard, and Pickles on homemade bread, which was absolutely delicious and it had an amazing crunch in each bite! I wish I had taken a picture before I devoured it, but all that was left was crumbs. After the sandwich, we ordered two "Guava and Cheese pastelitos" which were also delicious! The place itself is a bit cramped, but it's the food that matters. The coffee was good (and Cuban strong). Our guava pastries still warm and not too sweet. I tried a fried cheese ball - surprisingly light. I live hush puppies, and this tasty bite reminded me of the beach, Cuban style. Hubby got a sandwich. Thanks to Yelpers for pointing me here b/c it's one of those places I'd probably never think to try. They're in a very shady and dated-looking strip mall - might be helpful to look at the Yelp photo of the storefront just so you know what to look for. It's your classic-looking dive. This place is worth a visit if you like Cuban sandwiches. Their sandwiches are very good. I'm no Cuban sandwich expert so I can't compare w/ the others but I can say I enjoyed mine very much. The sandwiches are just $4.50 and they have just one kind, the standard w/ roasted pork, baked ham, Swiss cheese, sliced pickles, mustard, & Mojo sauce. Sandwiches are made-to-order, so you will have to wait for about 5 minutes or so. For dessert, get their "guava & cheese pastry" - it's a very flaky turnover w/ a yummy guava & cream cheese filling in the middle, and it is heaven. I thought I'd eat just a few bites b/c I was really full from the sandwich but I couldn't stop. I could've eaten a second one, too :) They have several different pastries but I picked the guava & cheese b/c one of the other customers was telling me it's their best pastry. The person who made my sandwich also said it was the best pastry. I also liked the price - just $.75. The two people who work here are very nice. I asked the owner if he's Colombian b/c there were several Colombia posters on the wall - he's Colombian and he said they've been in this location for 25 years. Making Cuban bread is their main business, and they help provide bread for all the area Cuban restaurants. I saw one guy come in and get 3 big boxes of Cuban bread. I absolutely love this bakery. I live an hour south of town but stop by whenever I am anywhere close. As a transplanted Florida native I have an appreciation for Cuban cooking. The first time I was across the street at the book store I saw it and walked over to check it out. Went in, spotted the guava cheese pastries, met the owner and knew I had found a new happy place. It is a dive no doubt but the pastries are to die for and the cuban sandwiches are off the chain. I usually call ahead and order 20 pastries and some bread. I absolutely loved my visit here! The owner was very friendly and had great customer service. I literally felt like I was in a different type of town. I ordered a panini to go as I was in a rush to make it to class. He asked how I heard about his establishment (yelp) and was I eating it there (nope). I wish I could have. I posted pics of the extra yumminess of this sandwich. The sandwich was great (only $5) and I'll definitely be returning. As a Florida native I love my Cuban food, and until yesterday was always, without fail, disappointed by Atlanta Cuban eateries. This place doesn't look like much at all, it's definitely a dive...which made me instantly think "I bet this will be good" and it was. I finally tracked down this little spot (after stopping at the bakery that I thought all of the yelpers were talking about ...). Pan-American Bakery is not easy to locate... it is actually in the middle of a rather disheveled-looking shopping center that has clearly seen Clairmont road's "better days". The interior of the shop is small, not-exactly tidy, and rather sparse ... that said, the little lady does really whip a stellar cuban sandwich. She doesn't speak too much but diligently makes the sandwich in the back of the shop. She asks me if "this is to go?"... and it's not like you have much of a choice because there are really no tables and very, very little in the way of sides or sodas. The sandwich itself is overflowing with meat and the bread is very fresh. It's a steal for $4.50. Give it a try if you are in the area and a good "marker" is to located the restaurant "Mint" which "anchors" the northwest end of this shopping center. read more

5 stars just for the hospitality and food. The atmosphere is dirty and small ... I think 3 or 4 tables. It's the best Cuban I have had in Atlanta so far and the Empanadas (when they have them) are also the best. It's buttered and pressed as it should be. I'm not sure what else they serve or bake because the cases are always empty. read more

Simply delicious. Wandered in by accident and have found a new breakfast spot. At first glance this place looks like a slightly empty latin grocery, half abandoned bakery.. but the wave of fresh empanada smell had me ready to try whatever they had going. The classic breakfast is a colada with some tostada cubana (heavily buttered and pressed cuban bread: to the non Miamian think a softer baguette), but though it was early the empanadas looked too good to pass up. Listen, I've eaten.. like.. a gross amount of empanadas in my lifetime. They come in all different styles, dough types, fillings, etc. and they often end up falling hard to the side of either 1. too oily or 2. dry. This. dough. was. unreal. Obviously corn, but perfectly moist, crisp, fried but not oily. They had these little styrofoam cups with a green homemade hot sauce... so good on the empanadas. We had to ask the owner his secret: they buy heirloom corn, cook it and create the cornmeal on site for the empanadas. Please check out! read more

The bomb!!! Drove from Alpharetta last weekend to this lil place. Hungry as a cow and was so looking forward to getting there and putting my teeth and mouth to work. A lil intimidating when you pull up to the plaza, pero let me tell you that lil hot box was a lil piece of Cuban Sandwhich heaven. One of the best parts was when I asked for a guava and cheese pastry, the gentleman told me that they a coming out of the oven in a minute. What?? I was soo happy, nothing like fresh baked pastry out of the oven. The owner seemed to want us to sit there and eat but, we were in a rush and decided to take it to go. We didn't even make it a mile down the street and devoured the massively half of the sandwhich. We had to pull over to the BP to finish our mouthgasm. Based on Yelpers recommendations, I thought I'd give this place a try. Should have checked to see how many reviews there were before making the commitment (3 past reviews). I must agree, this place is a dumpy hole in the wall. I walked in to find the place pretty empty. I thought they were out of business or just robbed of everything in site. There was no baked goods on display, the racks were empty. If it wasn't for the "Open" neon sign, I would have probably turned around and left. The owner looked at me with a blank stare as if I was lost. I had to initiate the conversation or it would have been a full on staring contest. I asked for a cuban sandwich. She looked confused and looked to an elderly gentlemen for assistance. He said, " Our sandwich press isn't plugged in, can you wait 15 minutes." I said, " Sure." He then replied, " Oh, how about tomorrow, can you come back tomorrow?" I said, " Probably, not... Bye." So, I left the place frustrated and unsatisfied. The bread does not have the crumb or split top you might wish for. The roast pork was underwhelming- lacking flavor and moisture. It is obvious that the focus here is on the commercial business and not walk in traffic. It is a tired, well worn shop, with not much to hold your attention or to encourage you to stay. With that being said Pan American offers the best Pasteles de Guayaba and Pasteles de Guayaba y Queso in Atlanta. At $1 each these guava pastries are worth the drive if you are a fan of the stuff like I am. Pan American Bakery also has great sandwiches, but I prefer the shop next to it, La Chiquita Mic, if i am there at lunch time, both for the food and the atmosphere. read more

Yum, I love that the best Cubans come out of a Colombian-owned bakery, and for only $4.50! Thanks eatbufordhighway blog dude for the tip. I have compared this sandwich to the one next door, also $4.50, but not nearly as good, as well as those at Havana Restaurant (on the other side of Buford) and Havana Grill (about a mile down Buford in the Southwest-ish direction). If you want to sit down with your black beans and rice (and maduros and other Cuban goodies), then one of the Havanas is a better pick, but if you're in it just for the sandwich (which will fill you up so you don't even miss the sides), then Pan American is your joint. One thing I will say is be prepared to wait longer than you think it should take. The kind, quiet lady who will make your sandwich is very precise and deliberate in her assembly, pressing and slicing. I swear she weighs out every piece of lechon, slices exactly x pieces of ham for every sandwich, and will make separate trips to the fridge each time she needs to add some mustard or a slice of cheese or a pickle or mojo. It's slow, but at the same time strangely touching...to the point that you can almost taste the care that went into making that sandwich, and it's all the better for it: perfect balance of flavors/components, perfect moistness to the lechon, perfect density to the bread, perfect restraint in the application of butter to achieve a perfect crispness on the exterior, perfectly diagonal half-age. 5 stars for the Cuban sandwich and guava cheese pastry. Meat pie was pretty good, but not my thing. The Cuban is made to order and she shaves the meat fresh while you wait. Takes about 5-10 minutes, but so worth it and only $4.50. I've been coming here once a week for the last couple of months. There is one small table if you want to eat it there, but I always get mine to go. Based on people picking up large bakery orders, it seems that many Cuban restaurants in town use their bread.
