Came for lunch with a frolleague. The restaurant was pleasant, there's a big tree trunk in the middle of the dining room hung with decorations. TVs above were showing Olympic events with the sound off. The outdoor patio will be terrific when the weather is a little warmer, although it has heaters and plastic curtains to block the wind. I ordered one of the lunch special bowls, the La Croqueta, which was white rice, black beans, a piece of fried plantain, a bit of chopped tomato, and four pork croquettes (they look like fried mozzarella sticks, but with soft pork filling instead of cheese). I thought it was fantastic. We shared an order of yucca fries that were also good, especially with the sauce, which I suppose was something simple like ranch dressing but I really enjoyed it. The staff were welcoming and helpful. I was surprised that there were few other guests for lunch. But I would absolutely go back for a sandwich or something else from the menu. My second time at Azucar, but I think it's safe to say this is my favorite Cuban restaurant that I've had in Atlanta. I'm Caribbean, so I love any kind of food with tropical flare! Inside: While the insides a little small, it's super cute, cozy, and has beautiful greenery hanging from the ceiling, giving it that tropical/garden feel. Would make for a perfect date night, but still casual enough to just stop by. They also offer patio seating out front. Service: Both times I've been, we've been seated immediately, and orders taken quickly. It wasn't very busy, since we went on a Sunday afternoon, so I'm not sure how that would compare to a Friday or Saturday night. Pricing: Four a nice meal, I think the pricing is appropriate. For entrées, you'll probably end up spending anywhere between $20-$30 per person, not including drinks. Food and drinks: The main reason that brought us back lol. I love coconut drinks and mojito's, so naturally, I tried the coconut Mojito. As mentioned, this was our second time going, and after I tried the coconut Mojito the first time, I just knew I had to come back for another round. Food wise, I got the skinny Pollo. I always appreciate a nice grilled chicken breast. It's a healthier option, but still full of flavor. Chicken was tender, and love that it's topped with grilled onions. Good portion size, good service, plenty of space. Friend and I came on a weekday night for dinner. It seemed like most of their business that evening was through delivery apps or pickup. We were seated immediately and ordered fairly quickly. I got the Lechon Asado, which came with rice, black beans, some plantains, a little salad. I think there's an option to get congri but you need to ask. Everything was delicious. The rice was quite flavorful and not simply plain white rice. The black beans were cooked well without being mushy but just slightly over salted for me. The pork was solid. I even tasted my friend's cubano and it was well done; a little heavier on the roast pork vs ham if you're curious about ratio. I definitely recommend giving it a try if you're in the mood for cuban food and good service. Will have to try the coffee next time. read more

I was in the neighborhood and finally stopped by Azucar restaurant, which has been on my list for a few months. They're lovely patio was calling me on a very sunny day. I like the low-key vibe of the restaurant during the day. Apparently they have live music on Friday nights as well which could be fun. The menu had all the Cuban classics and I ordered the Ropa Vieja. My food was ready within a few minutes, which was great because I was hungry. I ordered the coconut Mojito and passionfruit Mojito, which were both good, but can add up pricewise. Overall, it's a great value for some homemade tasting Cuban food in this area. I really enjoyed my visit to Azucar. I ran across them thanks to social media. We went on a Sunday afternoon and were able to seat ourselves. Upon walking in, you're captivated by the interior. The drinks we ordered were the coconut mojito and the mango margarita. I don't even like mojitos but I tasted it and it was superb! It www a nice creamy coconut flavor and strong. It was made very well and hit the mark. The mango margarita was delicious as well and I loved it. It too was STRONG and all around tasty. For the entrees we order the skinny pollo and the palomilla steak. Both came with black beans, white rice, plantains, and a salad. When I tell you the meats, black beans, and rice or seasoning so well. Everything was nice and buttery, which made it taste so good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. So glad I finally visited this restaurant. I liked the decoration, all the lights, the beautiful tree right at the middle, it gives a pretty cool vibe. I came for lunch with a friend and we got some mojitos (delicious and so fresh), we also ordered the lunch bowls: generous amount of delicious food! And we finished with some iced coffee. Very cute small restaurant! Came with two friends and when seated only given one full menu and three lunch paper menus. We shared the one menu till she came back with our drinks and asked for two more. Food was delicious but service was very lacking. Only three tables dining and our server never came back to check on us and we seriously needed drink refills. My friend had to finally get up and go ask to please bring us refills. Needless to say we won't be back. On another note the Hovan restaurant next door was busy and after looking up their menu which looked very good and great prices will go there to try. read more

I came here after work one day on a whim, and I was so pleasantly surprised. This restaurant is located next to other little restaurants and shops. Parking is tight, but I lucked out on a space in front of the restaurant. Inside, the restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. There were a handful of customers, which is what you'd expect on a weeknight. My server was prompt and friendly. I ordered a watermelon juice, a side salad, and the skinny chicken (I think?). The watermelon juice was SO refreshing. The side salad was delicious and large enough to be an entree if you added some protein. The entree was just what I expected--all the flavors were there and there was a good portion. My bill was around 40 bucks with tip. They also have outside seating. We love a good local spot, but a good Cuban local spot? Um Yes please!! Azucar has SUCH a beautiful ambiance, the music, the décor and the lighting make you forget you're in Brookhaven. Of course I took pictures and videos, but you really have to see it for yourself. The inside is spacious and can accommodate small to large parties. We actually happen to see a large party walk in shortly after us, about a group of 7, and they were able to get seated comfortably. The service was 10/10. I wish I got the young ladies' name who sat us and served us, but she was sweet, and helpful in guiding us on the best options to order. Aside from the nice setting and service, the next thing that stood out to me was their cocktail menu. It is always cocktail o'clock for me (hehe). With that said, we started off with a glass of prosecco, and a pineapple margarita (sugar on the rim for me!) For our entrees we ordered the El Cubano (Cuban sandwich) and the Pan Con Ropa Vieja (shredded beef sandwich). The El Cubano amongst the other sandwiches on the menu, automatically come with fries, however you can sub them for any of the side for $1.99. My friend subbed theirs with sweet plantains. My Cubano was GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!, and the fries were well seasoned. I tried my friends Pan Con Ropa Vieja, and I might have loved theirs a little more ha! It was the sauce that did it! It was just the right amount, and my goodness was it flavorful. Now if you have been following my reviews, I was already full but per usual my little greedy self-ordered a café con leche AND a guava and cheese empanada. The empanada was just ok, but the café con leche HIT the spot. I will be returning especially with it being right in the neighborhood. BTW: for anyone unfamiliar with the area, parking is free, it is a tight area, so not a whole lot of spaces, I'd recommend carpooling if you are coming with a group. read more

This was my first time at Azucar Cuban Cuisine and it was an amazing experience! I had the beef empanadas and the ropa vieja, both were absolutely delicious and so fresh. I also ordered an iced espresso to go which was just as tasty. I sat at the bar and my server Brian was fantastic. He was super friendly, fast, and very helpful in guiding me through the menu and recommending things to try. The service was excellent from start to finish. I'm Hispanic and and obviously love Hispanic food, the drinks were not bad but food quality was not the greatest. Some of our plates were just missing flavor, other under salted other way too salty. For the price we paid for the food we didn't enjoy the food at all. We ordered an appetizer and when we received it it was missing the yuca fries which was one of the reasons we ordered it but then they said there were out of Yuca but waiter never mentioned that when we ordered it. We've been passing this place for a while now but never stopped in. Now that we bought a place a few blocks away, we decided to try more places near our new home. We were really happy with our dinner. My wife got the Cuban Tour (an appetizer sampler) and I got the Cubano as that's the first thing I ever try at a Cuban restaurant. The Cuban Tour was really good with both the variety and the quality. The Cubano was good, but I've noticed that in ATL, Cubanos tend to be mayo forward and I prefer a more mustard forward sandwich, but the meat was flavorful and very tender. I'm actually excited to go back and try a few other things such as the La Havana. This place deserves to be more packed and is a better choice than D'Cuban Cafe. read more

Went on Sunday afternoon and it was pretty empty. Our server was really nice although she brought me a cup with ice when I asked without and brought the churrasco with the wrong side. The churrasco with white rice and the tostones (which was the side that was ordered but I didn't get right off the bat when the order was brought) was really good. I thought one cup of rice would not be enough but it was. The bartender was nice and turned up the volume when he noticed my boyfriend was watching the soccer game on the restaurant TV. So this spot has an outdoor in an indoor type of environment. A lot of the places in this little small strip mall have a lot of patio seeding so this is actually on brand. And it's covered so if it's raining or whatever the case may be, you can still sit outside and eat. The way staff was super friendly. I went near closing time and they didn't make me feel like they were rushing me so that was really cool too So everybody was super friendly. So they don't have a full bar is what you would expect a place to have but they do have plenty of rum. Obviously it's a Cuban spot so rum is probably their deal lol. You'll see the bottles in the background of the bar area. But if you want to go ahead and have a plethora of drink options this may not be for you. But that's okay! Loaded tostones - For an appetizer these are damn good. I got shredded beef on them. It's basically smash and fried and topped with meat and cheese and it was really really good. El Cubano - see I ordered something different initially but then I'm thinking to myself, let me get what they're known for. Went back again today with my brother and the food was actually better! They've settled into their groove and have a beautiful little spot with delicious food. You can eat inside, outside, alone, with your family, or a larger group. The inside is not the biggest of places, but there is plenty of room outside. There is a full bar located inside in which you can sit and order as well. We got the Ham Croquetas as an appetizer. I ordered the Palomilla steak, which comes with white rice, black beans, 2 smaller sweet plantains, and a small salad. We also ordered El Cubano and a kids Quesadilla. Both of those came with a side of fries, which you can substitute for another side for $1.50. To start, the Ham Croquetas were some of the best I have ever had. They were stuffed with a generous amount and had a perfect crunch on the outside. Fried to perfection! The Palomilla was excellent. It is usually my go-to, but it was also recommended by the waiter. There are two steaks topped with onions, which are charred and seasoned. I highly recommend. The rice and beans were delicious and the sweet plantains were a perfect dessert for me. I tried the other items and highly enjoyed them. El Cubano is a perfect combination of flavors. The Quesadilla is a perfect size for the kids. The portion size is enough to take some home. They give you a great sized portion, especially for the prices you pay. I will definitely be coming back to this location and I am glad to have tried it.
